This is such a great concept, I don't know why people are complaining. You wouldn't have gotten a new souls anyway so this fills the void quite nicely and, allows for a lot of experimentation like never before in souls games due to starting new builds all the time.
The only thing I don't like is the enemy reuse. Having all unique enemies would be better, even if there are less. Or at least don't reuse bosses from Dark Souls, that's absolutely baffling to me that they took one of the most iconic bosses and made him an ER miniboss

Exactly. Here's a hot take: ER2 is very unlikely as ER's story was complete in the game (same with Bloodborne) I'll gladly take Nightreign to scratch that itch and see them try to mix up the FromSoft formula.

@@soulinker3895 I disagree that ER was complete. There's a lot of stuff that can happen. Pretty much all their endings are open ended. Not that I disagree ER2 is unlikely, because while they could definetly add to the story, they'd be forced pretty much to appropraite one ending as canon and the rest as not, since it's a very hard task to curate a game to allow someone to play through the continuation of seven different plot lines.

Not sure if the characters are even locked. Probably just have their own stat distribution and ults. Premades as opposed to "character creation" but you can probably level them and equip them as you want

I hope with this COOP release they will also add seamless coop in the base game. We already have a mod that can do that more or less, why can't they just add it so that we can play on official servers. Having either 1 or 3 is also a bummer, there should be scaling based on the number of players.
Tbh I think it would be better if they implemented seamless to the next game, so that it can be the co-op system from the start. Elden Ring is already so far along, it would change drastically if they were to completely rework the multiplayer aspect
I think this is a side project that has the intention of testing something like that for future games. Its very likely we will see a seamless coop multiplayer in the next fromsoftware game
Seriously. Really odd that they allow single player and three player but not two. It doesn't seem like it should be that difficult to tune a game mode in between the two they've already created for it, and they're going to miss out on a lot of sales because of that omission

Its probably for balance. Balancing a game like this would be hell if you could make your own build. That's why pvp falls so hard, too many people min maxing bleed builds and one shots.
This isnt the kind of game I usually play, but I love anything Elden Ring/ Dark Souls related. From Software could make an Elden Ring romance visual novel and I'd play the hell out of it.
They always produce quality so even when it's a game like this out of the ordinary i would still play it. I even olaued Armored Core and i usually dislike mechas but it was pretty good.

@@Kamawan0 It's not really re-using assets, it's featuring characters. Reusing assets is when you take animations or assets from another character and reapply them. For example, Pontiff Sulyvahn and Rellana share many animations, Arorias, the Abysswalker and Slave Knight Gael do aswell. That's because the same assets were reused. In DS1, there are many reused assets from Demons Souls. Smough also has the same animations as Asylum Demon and so do the other clone bosses. In DS2, Mystery Ornstein has the same animations as Ornstein. That's reusing assets, because you are taking assets from the files of another game and reapplying them in a different one. The Centipede Demon in Nightreign isn't even the same asset as DS1, both the model and animations are new because the original assets are too outdated to port over. Same with Duke's Dear Freja, it's an entirely new model and likely a complete overhaul since it's a co-op game, will likely split into two spiders as originally intended. You can't really call these reused assets because they have never been used previously, only similar assets (because they are the same bosses, just different versions from different generations). The Nameless King, sure while they are reusing his exact model, they are not re-using all of his animations. Furthermore, considering that Nightreign is an official Dark Souls+ Elden Ring crossover, it's mind of the whole point that there will be returning characters. You're not going to be fighting a boss called John the Dragonrider who looks suspiciously like the Nameless King, it literally is the Nameless King from the Dark Souls franchise, featured as one of the crossover bosses, if that makes sense. The whole reused assets argument is incredibly silly.

This sounds amazing! Seamless, cinders, roguelite, randomizer turbo mode all in one sounds so great. This is basically Fromsoft souls games mixed with Monster Hunter and Risk of Rain. The game will never get old unlike how the other games can get stale with knowing exactly what is going to happen each time you play, this is unlimited experiences. Will buy this day 1.

They scale down for solos so they might have to set a power scale in between for duos. I hope they add 4 player Co op but make super hard bosses to counter balance it so it feels like raid bosses or something
Not having duos is idiotic. Most people only have one other to play with….. making it 3s only is just plain dumb.. there is no way they would be that oblivious. I’m sure by launch we would have 1-2-3 player modes. If not then this game is probably not going to do as well.

I appreciate that the game allows solo play, but I'll be really disappointed if there’s no cross-play. My friends all have PlayStations, and I have a PC. I was fine playing the single-player mode on my own because I enjoy the challenge, so not being able to play online with friends wasn’t a big deal. But this game seems designed for multiplayer. Elden Ring is my favorite game, and since the original game and DLC don’t offer cross-play, I'm worried and a bit hesitant to dive in since I don’t have any friends that have a PC to play it with.

Not sure where you earn Murk from though as they did not clarify that part. But rest assure they did say no micro-trans, no live service related stuff so no battle pass.

On one hand as an original dark souls fan enjoyer. I do kinda see this as very fanservicey. On the other hand... fuck it. Its clearly a spinoff. The closest I've ever seen another franchise pull this self universe fuckery is hyrule warriors. I think if the game is fun and is done well I won't mind at all.
If I remember correctly its similar to ds2 with testing different things to see what players like and what works. Alongside that since Miyazaki isn't working on it is safe to assume he's working on something bigger while another director is gaining experience from working on this. 🙂
@@Frogorius Yes!!! FINALLY!!! THANK YOU!!! I've been saying this sort of thing for years about DS2. That game for as experimental as it was, was pivitol to the future development of Souls games. This spinoff title will be no different. Clearly what they want to experiment more with is CO-OP gameplay. Specifically how to make Co-op gameplay challenging and fun for all players without completely dogwalking a boss by abusing the single minded AI. Hopefully this adresses those concerns drastically.
The coop stuff may not be everyone's cup of tea but this makes me hopeful that their next full game will have more fast paced and dynamic combat/exploration like this. Sekiro but with even more combos and the usual RPG system would be the dream game for me.
Im the opposite lol I want them to slow it down, bring it back to the slower tense exploration of the earlier souls games. I typically aint into fast paced action games at all like ninja gaiden, nier automata, dmc or bayonetta and from seem to be heading more and more in that pure action direction. Its the slow exploration with the shield up hoping you dont get jumped while exploring worn down castles that is my fave aspect of froms souls games :) Demons souls and dark souls were perfect for me.
@@Terron29 I think the problem for something like Nier for me os that the combat is fast paces without much depth it's basically a bunch of button mashing. There are a lot of combos without much reason to use then and low enemy variety. Fast paced isn't good by itself.
I’m a bit disappointed that it’s a rogue like and not a fully explorable map, but I’m really excited for the other stuff. Also, I’m sure the modders will be able to easily rip the assets straight out of this Elden Ring and put them in the older Elden Ring. Since they have the same base.

False. Elden Ring is best played solo until you've finished your 120-150 build and then using that character to co-op with others and duel in the arena while testing different playstyles your build can support in order to plan the next character to blow 500 hours of life time on.

And I have a feeling, judging by the comments, that I'm not alone in that sentiment. I also have a feeling that if it's not in the game at launch, it's going to be one of those things FromSoft will stubbornly insist is not possible even though seamless coop mods exist for the base game.

I honestly believe this wasn't FULLY his decision, as in, he didn't want to make another one, but whoever funds his studio realizes that Elden Ring has massive potential for making money, so they told him to make something that would also be capable of breaching into the multiplayer market since that's where the majority of the industry's money lies. I'm cautiously optimistic only because like you said, its an entirely different formula.
according to interviews this was actually a first-time game director's idea at the studio that Miyazaki looked over and greenlit. The game director (Junya Ishizaki) has been a combat designer/director for previous souls games, including elden ring. This is just one fromsoft dev's passion project, not a corporate mandate

So no customizable avatars, no keeping progress, just repeatable matches of night/day cycles ending with boss fights. Do you get anything for winning or losing matches? Most match based games only have longevity due to having an in game currency and store so players want to earn things. This just sounds like another gamemode like arena that they could have added to elden ring as an extra patch rather than a whole other game.
They’ve already confirmed there’s a story that progresses so meta progression will clearly be in the game. They’ve also mentioned you can unlock skins for the characters (using an in-game currency called Murk), so there’s some customization for them.
You gain powerups that keep betweeen sessions and each character has its own story that progresses as you play. And you can customize them with skins. And all of that from just one trailer and one interview. Stop talking out of your ass
I’d assume progression be a bit like hades. More gets unlocked like a new heat. With an opportunity to add new bosses and story elements until the full picture is put together many runs in.

I hope with this COOP release they will also add seamless coop in the base game. We already have a mod that can do that more or less, why can't they just add it so that we can play on official servers. Having either 1 or 3 is also a bummer, there should be scaling based on the number of players.

Tbh I think it would be better if they implemented seamless to the next game, so that it can be the co-op system from the start. Elden Ring is already so far along, it would change drastically if they were to completely rework the multiplayer aspect

I think this is a side project that has the intention of testing something like that for future games. Its very likely we will see a seamless coop multiplayer in the next fromsoftware game

It's not really re-using assets, it's featuring characters.
Reusing assets is when you take animations or assets from another character and reapply them.
For example, Pontiff Sulyvahn and Rellana share many animations, Arorias, the Abysswalker and Slave Knight Gael do aswell. That's because the same assets were reused.
In DS1, there are many reused assets from Demons Souls. Smough also has the same animations as Asylum Demon and so do the other clone bosses. In DS2, Mystery Ornstein has the same animations as Ornstein.
That's reusing assets, because you are taking assets from the files of another game and reapplying them in a different one.
The Centipede Demon in Nightreign isn't even the same asset as DS1, both the model and animations are new because the original assets are too outdated to port over. Same with Duke's Dear Freja, it's an entirely new model and likely a complete overhaul since it's a co-op game, will likely split into two spiders as originally intended. You can't really call these reused assets because they have never been used previously, only similar assets (because they are the same bosses, just different versions from different generations).
The Nameless King, sure while they are reusing his exact model, they are not re-using all of his animations. Furthermore, considering that Nightreign is an official Dark Souls+ Elden Ring crossover, it's mind of the whole point that there will be returning characters.
You're not going to be fighting a boss called John the Dragonrider who looks suspiciously like the Nameless King, it literally is the Nameless King from the Dark Souls franchise, featured as one of the crossover bosses, if that makes sense.
The whole reused assets argument is incredibly silly.

This sounds amazing! Seamless, cinders, roguelite, randomizer turbo mode all in one sounds so great. This is basically Fromsoft souls games mixed with Monster Hunter and Risk of Rain. The game will never get old unlike how the other games can get stale with knowing exactly what is going to happen each time you play, this is unlimited experiences. Will buy this day 1.

They scale down for solos so they might have to set a power scale in between for duos. I hope they add 4 player Co op but make super hard bosses to counter balance it so it feels like raid bosses or something

I appreciate that the game allows solo play, but I'll be really disappointed if there’s no cross-play. My friends all have PlayStations, and I have a PC. I was fine playing the single-player mode on my own because I enjoy the challenge, so not being able to play online with friends wasn’t a big deal. But this game seems designed for multiplayer. Elden Ring is my favorite game, and since the original game and DLC don’t offer cross-play, I'm worried and a bit hesitant to dive in since I don’t have any friends that have a PC to play it with.

Not sure where you earn Murk from though as they did not clarify that part. But rest assure they did say no micro-trans, no live service related stuff so no battle pass.

FS quality hasn’t waned for a decade plus. The success of recent games has allowed the studio to take some creative risks, nothing wrong with that.
If I remember correctly its similar to ds2 with testing different things to see what players like and what works. Alongside that since Miyazaki isn't working on it is safe to assume he's working on something bigger while another director is gaining experience from working on this. 🙂

I've been saying this sort of thing for years about DS2. That game for as experimental as it was, was pivitol to the future development of Souls games.
This spinoff title will be no different. Clearly what they want to experiment more with is CO-OP gameplay.
Specifically how to make Co-op gameplay challenging and fun for all players without completely dogwalking a boss by abusing the single minded AI.
Hopefully this adresses those concerns drastically.

The coop stuff may not be everyone's cup of tea but this makes me hopeful that their next full game will have more fast paced and dynamic combat/exploration like this. Sekiro but with even more combos and the usual RPG system would be the dream game for me.
Im the opposite lol I want them to slow it down, bring it back to the slower tense exploration of the earlier souls games. I typically aint into fast paced action games at all like ninja gaiden, nier automata, dmc or bayonetta and from seem to be heading more and more in that pure action direction. Its the slow exploration with the shield up hoping you dont get jumped while exploring worn down castles that is my fave aspect of froms souls games :) Demons souls and dark souls were perfect for me.

@@Terron29 I think the problem for something like Nier for me os that the combat is fast paces without much depth it's basically a bunch of button mashing. There are a lot of combos without much reason to use then and low enemy variety. Fast paced isn't good by itself.

False. Elden Ring is best played solo until you've finished your 120-150 build and then using that character to co-op with others and duel in the arena while testing different playstyles your build can support in order to plan the next character to blow 500 hours of life time on.

Firstly I’m extremely excited. But I also wonder if this was Miyazaki’s idea or what he wanted or if it was something that he HAD to agree to as a part of whatever Elden ring deals they have set up. Just feels so different from the usual design philosophy
I honestly believe this wasn't FULLY his decision, as in, he didn't want to make another one, but whoever funds his studio realizes that Elden Ring has massive potential for making money, so they told him to make something that would also be capable of breaching into the multiplayer market since that's where the majority of the industry's money lies. I'm cautiously optimistic only because like you said, its an entirely different formula.
according to interviews this was actually a first-time game director's idea at the studio that Miyazaki looked over and greenlit. The game director (Junya Ishizaki) has been a combat designer/director for previous souls games, including elden ring. This is just one fromsoft dev's passion project, not a corporate mandate

So no customizable avatars, no keeping progress, just repeatable matches of night/day cycles ending with boss fights.
Do you get anything for winning or losing matches? Most match based games only have longevity due to having an in game currency and store so players want to earn things.
This just sounds like another gamemode like arena that they could have added to elden ring as an extra patch rather than a whole other game.
Let's just wait and see (all we've got is the gameplay trailer so we'll have to wait for more trailers before we come to a conclusion)
They’ve already confirmed there’s a story that progresses so meta progression will clearly be in the game.
They’ve also mentioned you can unlock skins for the characters (using an in-game currency called Murk), so there’s some customization for them.

You gain powerups that keep betweeen sessions and each character has its own story that progresses as you play. And you can customize them with skins. And all of that from just one trailer and one interview.

I’d assume progression be a bit like hades. More gets unlocked like a new heat. With an opportunity to add new bosses and story elements until the full picture is put together many runs in.
