- SMG4 is a channel that's gained a lot of popularity over the years, but some fans have grown unhappy on how much the channel has changed lately. Matt discusses why the channel evolving is a GOOD thing.

I have been watching smg4 since I was younger, and when smg4 changed, I didn't mind at all. I still enjoyed the new things like the old things. They give me a laugh when I'm feeling down

Also stopped watching SMG4 mid 2016 til Boopkins was added and also Bob, as 2017 rolled along with Meggy introduced that’s where I stick with SMG4 to this day.
It’s pretty astonishing to see SMG4 and his brother changed a lot for their channel especially with GLITCH.
Thankfully, they never decided to go the extra mile to get rid of Mario and everything that was related to Nintendo. Peach's Castle is an exception, so are the designs for certain characters.

Back in the day there was soo much Nintendo we had Toad and Bowser as main characters, so many Mario characters as side characters and many Mario maps. They removed everything except the one thing they couldn’t remove. Mario. If they removed him they would get so much hate, lose views and lose fans. While I wouldn’t say SMG4 objectively changed for the better (or worse), I agree.
I also think one of the reasons many people don’t like modern SMG4 as much might be due to how much more seriously it started taking itself, leading people to take it MORE seriously than they were intended to.
Been watching SMG4 since 2018, starting with IF MARIO WAS IN OCARINA OF TIME and MARIO & THE T-POSE VIRUS, and I respect what the Lerds have done to keep things from getting stale & I salute them for expanding their horizons.

Thank you! Glad to see someone in the SMG4 communuty who actually enjoys the changes they made. I myself did enjoy the old content, but I love SMG4's new content and how far they have come.
The reason I love SMG4 so much is because it embodies the only constant in the universe: change. And it is beautiful.

As an esports competitor and loving gamer, Meggy's really fantastic as a character and became one of my top fav fiction characters, shes the reason why im into smg4 by a lot and made channel more memorable and really good continuity. 😊
The worst about this, was on new years eve 2019, Luke specifically asked his audience if he wanted himself to not look like Mario, and more like the fanart he's gotten over the years at the time. And now that it's here, we suddenly turn the other way, not realizing what we have done.
My first video in SMG4 was (probably) Lost In The Woods. (2018). I begining to turning a fan in Meggy's Boothcamp (2019) and a declared fan in 2020.
Particularly I prefer the modern SMG4 (2017-present) but I don't see problems with the old videos.
May I don't like some things (like Desti and Axol's deaths) but I'll respect the Lerdvichalgul brothers' decisions.
My only issue are lack of screentime for underused characters.
I agree a lot with your points, growth can help someone change for the better, and SMG4 has grown so much in the recent years. I hope he keeps growing his channel with more new ideas to come, and so do you Matt.
Corrections. Season 1 was on the SMG4 channel with season 2, 3 and newer shows on the glitch channel. And they only truly created meta runner and sunset paradise. (SP was a spin off with meggy being the main character) with they newer shows, forgot who made murder drones but the digital circus was made by gooseworks, with luke and kevin helping them
Smg4 was my high school guilty pleasure to get laughs and cheer me up a bit with its own wacky humor. True I too was a little thrown off by it's vulgar humor ,yet It's the execution and timing of how it's used It's where it gets to laugh despite others that don't normally swear period; We also have to do with during that time when these [EDITED] videos We're a thing at youtube before the HMA Algorithm, where they replaced certain lines from cartoons and use Meme swearing to make it humirable ( And it's somehow worked).
Super glitchy boy brothers have gone a long way from there Classic old style Garry's mod animations and jokes; Were they kept the element with it As they evolve with better storytelling, new stories, OC contents development, and bigger projects with it's peak being the Amazing Digital Circus 🎪 😍

Solid reasoning. Feel like a lot of hardcore SMG4 fans should take this to heart. Especially the ones stuck in a cycle of endless fanmade SMG4 crap

I'll emphasize by saying this again, in 2019, SMG4 himself asked his audience if they wanted redesigns of his characters, and now that it's here, fans suddenly don't want it anymore. Maybe we should be careful we wish for, because we could've easily said no.

I honestly don't care if old is better or new is better. I just love both and everyone should be like me.
Hopefully people who say old smg4 is better and new smg4 is garbage will watch this great video.

Modern SMG4 isn't _bad_ in my opinion, but there are some things that I personally don't like about it
I don't like how they flanderized Princess Peach to be furious about many things, and overall just made her a very unlikeable person
(Also they abandoned her in 'Let's Go Visit Peach' sadly)
I also wish there was a bit more variety in the video's main characters recently. It's been mostly videos with SMG4, SMG3, Mario, and/or Meggy. I know there were some other videos which featured different main characters like Mario Goes on Death Row, SMG4 Kids, Grand Theft Mario, etc. But I wish there a bit more videos like that.
I *also* also don't really like the smooth animation on some of the jokes cause they kinda ruin them imo.
There are probably other stuff that I don't like about modern SMG4, but the show is still great despite the stuff I mentioned. (•◡•)

Change is good but waiting sucks because so many of the big moments don’t feel as grand because the wait with filler and other stuff didn’t work and made everything after anime arc significantly became less engaging and more so out of pocket rather than a planned because remember the waluigi arc was never planned and to this day is considered the best arc genesis, revelations, lawsuit and the adware all lack what made the first 4 arcs work TH-cam had its shortcomings but modern smg4 and 3 are literally just pallet swap and have the same narcissistic attitude another thing when it comes to history nothing about modern smg4 does anything good stories don’t connect well, feels more childish rather than for a general audience I have so much to say about this while i think change is good there’s a whole lot of stuff that doesn’t support that statement
People always talk about classic versus modern, but that debate is honestly dead. I know you and many others have talked about this, but the show right now is so much different from even when the changes happened.
Yes, change is a necessary thing sometimes, but that doesn't mean it's always good. SMG4 is at a point where its changes feel forced. The Lawsuit Arc and the redesigns are a perfect example. The framing within the arc itself is that Nintendo bullied them into doing it for quite literally no reason. Compare this to Meggy's change from Inkling to human, which was a sacrifice she made and was lucky enough to even survive in order to save her friends.
Another example is the new castle. In It's Gotta Be Perfect, SMG4 was obviously in the wrong for obsession with perfection. When the castle is destroyed, he says it's gonna be for everyone, yet in the end, Mario and Marty paid for the castle itself, which looks like SMG4's head. He went from self loathing to self obsessed, and that's being generous in my opinion.
I don't like a castle that's so obviously narcissistic, which makes me wanna go back to Peach's castle. I don't like boring redesigns that only do the minimum to be legally distinct. There's even the lore supporting the use of recolors over redesigns. These changes would be fine if they actually had a purpose. People always talk about change, but SMG4 needed to include it into the story to make it work, and those stories are awful as of late. We can praise the quality and effort that is clearly shown, but at the end of the day, they haven't done enough to justify these changes, so people will obviously want them back when there is no valid reason for them to exist or there is more reason for the older stuff to exist.
This even goes into characters as well. SMG4 himself is my least favorite character in the series right now because of what It's Gotta Be Perfect did. SMG3 has gotten better but still feels directionless. Sometimes he's the best, sometimes he's the worst. It quite literally happened in back to back videos this year. Meggy and Mario have been butchered over the past 5 years. In Meggy's Bootcamp, they understand their own flaws and apologized for it. Mario even gave spaghetti to Meggy to calm her down. Nowadays, Meggy is extremely close to a Mary Sue while Mario has become dumber and dumber with no smart or caring side. It feels like what they did to so many other franchises with strong, female leads and their predecessor. Once again, so many changes that have been executed poorly or flat out have no excuse to even happen, and this isn't even from 2014 videos (which are admittedly the "worst" ones of classic era with what you described). The show feels so different even from 2022, which was when that clip of Saiko was from.
Before, these changes were added with taste and class. It didn't forced. Nowadays, it does, and some of these changes are so bad that we straight up feel like we aren't supposed to like them. Meta Runner is amazing, but I am utterly shocked at how their writing went from the likes of the Waluigi and Anime Arcs and Meta Runner to that of the Lawsuit Arc and It's Gotta Be Perfect. Even Meta Runner S3 had some big hiccups. Ever since midway through the Genesis Arc, their writing as really gotten worse for some unknown reasons. *This* is why people don't like the changes these days. The show is just not holding up to the quality it once had from 2016-2020. I know this video probably was focusing on the Hobo Bros, SMG4, and the overall look of the channel, but I find these discussions to be very basic on TH-cam and don't go in depth on the actual changes they made. Change alone isn't positive. It's a neutral thing. The effect it has is what matters, and SMG4 has failed in that department as of lately to many people, myself included.

Mario is still SMG4's best friend, new castle fits channel style very well, Lawsuit Arc makes it more engaged and still had purpose like any arc and current saga is having especially, redesigns are also very good and more beloved cause they feel more og and different, every glitch series is fantastic... im sorry you, and many people you agree with, are just dead wrong

@johanguzman2706 The channel style is a Mario parody. Mario is THE main character. Having only him makes the series feel like an If Mario Was In SMG4 video. All those redesigns are quite literally knock off versions of the original. They aren't original, especially SMG4's. His hat has an S despite SMG0, 1, and 2 all having their number. 3 having a skull makes sense. People loved the OG designs as well. There's a reason they made lore based upon it. They just took all of that away for cheap knockoffs.
And imagine having the guts to say I'm dead wrong. Your entire point is just "I like it so you're dead wrong." Please tell me how a Cocomelon design (even after fixing it) and the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse are better than the original? What style is the show? To me, it's Gen Alpha stuff with elite videos like Mario vs Skibidi Toilet and CEO of Rizz. I don't see the same show anymore because it's chasing cringe trends and trying too hard to stay relevant with these changes.
