  • Welcome to the bench!
    In this video I’ll show you that a simple chunk repair can be done with the most simplistic tools. There may be a few comments that could help you as you consider taking on a rosewood repair of your own, but the most important element is inspiration.
    You don’t need $200 rasps, expensive vices, fixtures and all that… you just need to do it.
    A clamp, some glue, and a small file and you’re ready to hide that unsightly chip. Well okay, maybe you won’t “hide” it, buy you can certainly improve your plane handle.
    Use this project to build you technique and confidence as you get ready for the full horn repair or a mid body break.
    Thanks for watching!
    Oh and if you are going System Three epoxy, don’t forget to type ADDISON in the the coupon code and save a couple bucks. ❤️

    Great information Gordon. Personally, I have repaired many totes and handles in the past with a simple file, razor blade, chisel and sandpaper. In fact, I still grab these items and have them on hand even if the repair goes a different direction. A file card helps with keeping the file from clogging 👍🇺🇲👊

      Sooooo true!!!! Thank you for sharing your experience. I do plan to spend some time with tools as we migrate from beginner to advanced.

      @@SW-jo7vy well, it doesn’t prevent them but it can limit the damage. It’s an indication I’m moving too fast or too careless. 🤣🤣

    Excellent tutorial especially about G2 usage. I've been receiving on some of my old Stanley Bailey hand planes broken in half totes and using 2 part epoxy to repair.

      Glad you like the System Three epoxy. Next time you buy, use ADDISON in the coupon code to get a discount. In addition to great adhesive, the guys at S3 are very helpful when you have a question. I stay in contact with them and share my experiences. Wouldn't it be great to see some of my rosewood repair work on the G2 box? 👀

    Thanks Gordon, this is really interesting stuff and incredibly useful. Are you planning on doing any more "Entry Level" vids for us total beginners? i'm all for making it all look less scary to someone with zero experience of this sort of thing!

      @@sabahl101 thanks for writing and YES!!! I have several videos on the list and I’m trying to build on this one. Im also going break down topics further so I can keep them short. For example, just files/rasps, dyes, finishes, etc.

    Hi Gordon, I love your work. And a big thank you for taking the time to make these videos for us. I know it take a big chunk of time to do them. So it is very much appreciated. I do have some Rosewood repairs coming up. But the problem I have is with an old infill plane. It has a clean break through the middle of the handle, and a screw through it from the sole of the plane, which I can't remove. So both parts of the handle are joined to the plane by the screw, and don't come off. And I don't want to drill out the screw as its an antique. I was thinking of using thin C.A glue, then clamp into place best I can. What do you think?

    • @gordonaddison444
      @gordonaddison444  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Interesting. If the screw is fixed and the rosewood dried/cracked, I feel like you would be hard pressed to close the gap. If you could, I would be willing to try adhesive. I would not use CA only because it will plasticise on the surface of the wood and most likely will not have the time to penetrate prior to “set”. A slow cure epoxy will saturate the fibers and get a bite. I would not rule out hide glue for the simple fact it can be heated and opened back up, or just plain “easier to undo or work with”. Yes, CA and epoxy are both going to cure, but the quick action of CA can limit the depth of your adhesion. Any dirt or particulate can further reduce adhesion, but a slow cure has time to penetrate, and the dust or impurities can be consumed in the adhesive. Yes, we always want clean/open pores for a glue-up but I can imagine a tight space for your project so there going to be some particulate in that crack. Send me a pic if you want to and we can continue to discuss ideas. You can reach me at lovesa45@gmail.com

      @gordonaddison444 thank you for the thoughtful and detailed reply. I see I will have to think about this a bit more! I will definitely email you with some pictures of the problem I have, at some point. So I can get the best advice from your expertise.
      Kind regards, Kevin.

    Good video. Can ground charcoal be used to tint the glue? (Graduate of the Port Huron school shop system of the '70's'. Now in the Maritimes)

    • @gordonaddison444
      @gordonaddison444  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you for the comment and yes on the charcoal. My only recommendation would be to powderize it. Too chunky will lead to finishing problems and it goes without saying, too much will negatively affect its integrity. We’re not talking “bridge construction” so I’m not too worried about MPa or strength of the bond. It will be fine. It won’t flow like dye, but you can definitely shade from dark grey to black. Great question and thanks for watching!
