Pretty amazing that this was probably my least favourite of all of the ELO tracks they ever released. So let that sink in. This is their worst track, yet still streets ahead of so much other stuff in the charts. I challenge you to find a more mundane ELO track. ELO just didn't do mundane. Every track they released was iconic, but this track was probably less iconic than most.

@@KenFullman That's one of the most completely baseless arbitrary things I've ever read about ELO. It's one of their best. When I read something like that it really makes me wonder what someone is hearing and what it's doing to their brain.

Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond.
Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop.
The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal". th-cam.com/video/sbg8aUn4YkA/w-d-xo.html

Then there is a catalogue of forgotten songs like Shangra lai - etc etc. But that's another story. Some of their production was beautiful.

Fun fact. He sent the band out to play a game of football. He took a drum loop from another track, laid pianos and guitars over it and wrote the lyrics on the fly. Gross is a German word he put in as a place holder and it stuck. Later, he would sing Bruce at the concerts. The sound at the end is a door closing. That was a dig at the British union musicians he used on earlier albums before moving to Germany to record. This was because when their "time" was up, they would walk out whether the recording was finished or not.

Tons of great songs came from ELO, evil woman, telephone line, living thing, all over the world, can't get it out my head, and sweet talking woman, Mr Blue sky and the list goes on. Gentlemen you have no idea the rabbit hole your stepping into Electric Light Orchestra is one of the finest Rock bands to come out of the 70s John Lennon once said on a English radio show that if the Beatles had stayed together they would sound like ELO Jeff. Lynne the lead guitarist chief songwriter and producer of all their albums is hugely influenced by the Beatles this particular song is their first hit to not have strings (violins , cellos). That is what the Orchestra part of their name is about . The original concept of the band when Jeff Lynne , Roy Wood and Bev Bevan started it in 1970 was to pick up where the Beatles left off with songs like "I am the Walrus" was to incorporate a classical construct of rock music usually their songs have strings usually 40 piece orchestra and for most of the 70s decade they had 3 string players (1 violinist and 2 cello players) as part of the band please explore further in reacting to more of their songs their catalogue is deep and you might have heard some of their songs I suggest you first react to the audio version of the their songs trust me it its ear candy to the 10 degree from the biggest Electric Light Orchestra fan I won't lead you wrong gentlemen

This band was ground-breaking! I love the door-slam at the end of this song. And he sings, "Don't bring me down, Grooosse," so, yeah he changed it to Bruce as the audience was singing, but he meant gross, as in that's, "gross!" And he was in Germany and it sounded like a German word. He's just telling his girlfriend to be herself and stop putting on airs.

Jeff Lynne has explained that he is singing a made-up word, "Grooss", which some have suggested sounds like the German expression "Gruß," meaning "greeting." Lynne has explained that originally he did not realize the meaning of the syllable, and he just used it as a temporary placekeeper to fill a gap in the lyrics, but upon learning the German meaning he decided to leave it in. After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows. ELO engineer Reinhold Mack remembers the term differently, stating that Lynne was actually singing "Bruce" as a joke in advance of an Australian tour "referring to how many Australian guys are called Bruce

There was only one Electric Light Orchestra. Yet after Jeff Lynne left the band, ELO became ELO Part 2. ELO Part 2 is an incarnation of the Electric Light Orchestra. Then after Jeff Lynne brought Bev's share of the band music history, ELO Part 2 became the Orchestra. Likely more of a way to honor his former members, Jeff Lynne call the third incarnation Jeff Lynne's ELO. ELO was one of the top rock bands of the nineteen-seventies. ELO was a pioneer in the production of rock videos. Electric Light Orchestra is one of my favorite rock bands.'

This is a good example of a song that being rather predictable, has clever twists here and there to keep your interest. Jeff has used that trick in tons of ELO songs.

Personally, I always thought he was saying "gross" especially since I'm a California lady & Jeff is a Brit...

He is singing Grosse, german for good, magic or shit, depending on how you point it at someone. Hence down bring me down.

It's a good tune but not a typical ELO song. Listen to ANYTHING from their previous two all-time classic albums - Out of the Blue and A New World's Record.

I agree 100%, and that's why during last month's live stream I recommended, "Tightrope". The boys promised me they'd react to it in November, and here we are--today is the day! It premieres at five-thirty. (Not sure what time zone that is, but I do know they're on the east coast.) Just an FYI to someone who obviously has a high ELO IQ.

I defy anybody to listen to this and not be singing the "Woohoo" and the "Groos" before you get to the end. They were going on tour in Australia where Bruce is a common name, so it became a bit of a joke. A great happy, head banging song. Jeff Lynn is the one nobody recognises in the Travelling Wilburys!

The Blues! ps~ELO's 1976 song, "Tightrope", is premiering today on this channel, at five-thirty (not sure if that's east coast time where they live, or what). Be there or be square, yo.

you forgot to ask Ryan more questions...he's the one reacting to most of your videos. I love your channel, but you need to do more questioning/engaging Ryan more. Keep his participation up with nods toward him...maybe he'll surprise you
