I found this answer about the word "groos" on quora: In the chorus of the ELO song "Don't Bring Me Down," the word "Groos" is actually a made-up word. It is often misheard as "Bruce" by listeners. The lead vocalist of Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), Jeff Lynne, has explained that he initially used the word "Groos" as a temporary placeholder to fill a gap in the lyrics [2]. However, upon learning that "Groos" sounded similar to the German expression "Gruß," meaning "greeting," he decided to keep it in the song . Interestingly, due to the misinterpretation of the word as "Bruce" by many people, Jeff Lynne started singing it as "Bruce" during live performances for fun . This led to some confusion about the actual meaning of the word. ELO engineer Reinhold Mack remembers the genesis of the term differently, stating that Lynne was actually singing "Bruce" as a joke in advance of an Australian tour, referring to the common name "Bruce" among Australian guys . Eventually, the word was replaced with "Gruss," based on the Bavarian greeting "Gruß Gott," which means "greet God" . In summary, the word "Groos" in the chorus of "Don't Bring Me Down" is a made-up word that Jeff Lynne used as a temporary placeholder in the lyrics. It was later replaced with "Gruss," which sounds similar to the German expression for "greeting" .
Before my dad died he said he'd communicate with me through an ELO song. This is the song I'd hear on the radio if I had to go to the lawyer's. Every time. My ex heard it in the Dr's waiting room when I broke my ankle last fall. There is absolutely life after death. It never fails to make me smile and brighten my mood! 🥰
One of my favourites songs from ELO, another one is 'Roll Over Beethoven'. ELO frontman Jeff Lynne, was part of the supergroup The Travelling Wilburys, along with George Harrison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison. So many great songs from them including 'Handle with Care', 'End of the Line' and 'Inside Out'.
Almost all of Jeff Lynn's work had been made public long before the Traveling Wilburys. Then again, the same could be said for every member of the band. TW was a dream team that came together for a bonus track on one of George Harrison's album when he and Lynn discussed the idea. Oddly enough, one of the factors that brought this group together was their mutual appreciation of Monty Python. Nobody expects the Traveling Wilburys!
@@Ironoclasty I didn't know about Lynn's appreciation of Monty Python, but I did know about George Harrison. When emi pulled out of backing Python's 'Life of Brian', Harrison stepped in to rescue it, he was a real Python fan, had a small part in the film as well! I love Python, we never missed watching it on TV every week, these iconic sketches, such as 'the department of silly walks', 'the Spanish inquisition', 'the dead parrot', there were so many classics, not forgetting the films of course! Re the TW, I had both their CDs and played them a lot, such great songs.
The lyrics for "Don't Bring Me Down" were basically written after the music. ELO frontman Jeff Lynne put together some lyrics about a girl who thinks she's too good for the guy she's with. Also, as a joke, Lynne put a count-in at the beginning of the song, even though there was nobody he was counting in. The word "groose" that Jeff keeps repeartedly singing after each title line was apparently a made-up place-keeper word to fill a gap in the vocals when he was improvising the lyrics. When the German engineer Reinhold Mack heard the song's demo,, he asked Lynne how he knew "gruss" means "greetings" in his country's language. Upon learning the German meaning, Lynne decided to leave it in. Many fans misinterpreted "groose" as "Bruce." In fact, so many people misheard the lyric that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows. 😀
Groose is actually Bruce. C'mon down was Bruce Forsyths catchphrase from the TV show The Price is Right which was popular at the time of this records release.
@@0utcastAussie Wow. Someone who remembers Bruce Forsyth! I used to love the Generation Game when he hosted it in the 70s. No one here in the US really knows who Bruce Forsyth was. So based on your YouYube moniker, you're eitther a British Ex-Pat in Australia, or Bruce was famous in Australia as well as the UK. God I wish you story about the song was true. It would be much more fun than the actual one. 😊
Groos is just a made up word by Jeff to fit the song but, so many people thought he was saying “Bruce” that he would sometimes sing “Bruce” in concert 😂
Their UFO TOUR was in ‘78. It was spectacular!!! The stage looked like a spaceship and when the first note was hit the lights started flashing on the spaceship and smoke rolling out all around it. The top slowly raised as they came up on a platform in the middle of the stage. That was something to see especially in the 70’s. A first for sure!
Sung by, produced by and written by Jeff Lynne. Great 👍 He also wrote and produced with the late Tom Petty, the late Roy Orbison and others. Jeff Lynne was also a member of The Traveling Wilburys. That band ended because too many of its members died. He and Bob Dylan are the only surviving members. I'll be 71 next month (July) & I've been loving your journey through the years that I grew up with. Rock & roll, pop, easy listening , country, etc. Good music is good music no matter when it came out.
Congrats on baby Brightly. Hope her, mama, big sister & you are all doing well. Change can be daunting but it also can help you grow. Thanks for another reaction & I'm prayin for y'all.

Awesome reaction thank you thank you thank you for doing this song I had totally forgotten about it I used to love it and play it all the time I couldn't wait for it to come on the radio thank you thank you thank you shadow❤❤❤❤❤❤
This was my favorite band when I was in elementary school in the mid 70's. Someone posted a 6th grade pic of our class and I LOL'ed. I'm the only one with a band on their shirt and it's ELO.
they had a huge, extremely expensive space ship that was assembled on stage and it opened at the beginning of the show with the band playing inside the space ship. There is some very cool video of this process.
A must reaction is needed for their song “Telephone Line” and another favourite is “Last Train to London”. E.L.O. Is a wonderful rabbit hole to go down. Love your reactions, thanks for sharing.
"Don't Bring Me Down" was featured in the 1997 mob thriller "Donnie Brasco" and also in the 2011 films "Paul" and "Super 8." The song is also featured in the sky-diving scene in the 2008 comedy "College Road Trip".
Should hear the earlier ELO song "Showdown". It's an underrated classic released prior to the more showy tunes they're more famous for from around 1976 onwards. Btw, I grew up in the 80s and ELO's hit making machine had slowed down by then. But they did release one 80s hit, at least a hit in England, where I was. The song is "Calling America" and it became a personal favorite of mine. 😊
Ultimate Classic Rock has cracked the code on that "Bruce" line in Electric Light Orchestra's "Don't Bring Me Down." Turns out the line isn't even "Bruce" but rather a vocal ad-lib made by Jeff Lynne saying "groose." Lynne said he only kept the "groose" in after his German engineer asked him "how did you know that word? Gruss. It means 'greetings' in German." Lynne decided "That's good. I'll leave it in." and the rest is misheard lyrics history.
LOVELOVELOVE ELO....if you can, the liver version of Telephone Line, also Turn to Stone from Wembly. Telephone Line in particular. The audience's reaction is so fabulous to see.
I love ELO. My favorite memory of this song is my junior year in high school at the KS State Fair. They had a "ride" where it was bean bags on the floor, a laser light show on the ceiling to ELO, REO Speedwagon, Kansas, and a host of others. September 1980. Happy times.
Love, love, love ELO! I just came from your review of The Knacks "My Sherona". For some reason that song woke up my memories of the band ELO! They've got some incredible music. You might like the movie "Zanadu", which is a musical filled with all kinds of music and fantasy in a good way!!!
Jeff Lynne who wrote and sings lead has said that it isn't an actual word, but just a sound he made while singing the song. Most people think he's saying Bruce, but he isn't. ELO was my first concert in 1980 in Boston and I collected most of their albums in high school. Jeff wrote songs and was friends with the Beatles and was a member of the Travelling Wilbury's along with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison. Legendary musician!!
I LOVED your reaction!! 💥I saw E.L.O. in concert in 1982. They had an amazing light show back then. The keyboardist married a girl who lives in my hometown west of Cleveland, Oh. He was just a few miles away. I still own my original E.L.O. albums. Love E L O. 🛸
ELO is my favorite band. Im going to see them this year final tour. I watch their Live at Wembley concert 2017 reguluarly. The happiest melodic music ever!
I'm going too and can't wait! Only my second time seeing them and what a show. I considered going to another city too, but then made travel plans that prevent me going to the next closest show. Maybe I'll treat myself to a 3-day trip to see them in a city I've never been to before.
My boyfriend (now husband) saw them live in 1978 in California. It was a concert with multiple bands including Journey and Trickster. An amazing experience, though I almost passed out from the heat on that day. ELO had their spaceship above the stage. That was a time when even teenagers could afford concerts. We went to so many!
My first concert at Day on the Green in Oakland CA was ELO oh we had a blast on the green & 3 deep to the stage...it started to lightly rain right before they came on & dingdong people were leaving to find cover...hell it was hot & that rain felt good so we just boogied on up to the stage. Great Day!!!
I remember a house party , in my youth . This song came on the stereo and someone cranked it! It was a nice system , I remember watching the beer bottles literally dancing to the music on the table near the speakers. You could feel the beat in your chest. No wonder I'm deaf. lol
A butt shaker from Jeff and the boys. They were huge when I was in high school. Jeff Lynn is musically one of s kind, but all the most talented are. Loved when the guys did the Traveling Wilberrys together: he and Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbeson, etc. Super fun music.
The song was used in the film "Paul". Also, watching you move to it and your spontaneous "ugh, yeah"; I could see you using it to put your own influence on it 😄
E.L.O. for sure changed the soundscape of the 70's, so much of their catalog still sounds fresh today. Also one of those bands that can never be truly imitated they were so unique. A few years ago they did a live show at Wembley Stadium, London and ROCKED IT, if you can find it a must see.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so hyped for a song! 👌🙌. I grew up with this type of music so add this to list of why Gen Xers as awesome as we are! We went hard with everything!!
This afternoon I walked out of the grocery store and there was a guy in his truck with the windows down and Hold On Tight by ELO cranked up. Such a great song too.
Bahaha.... As a kid I loved this song! Still do! I know almost every lyric to every song I ever liked or had to listen to!! Until reactions, I thought it was...wait for it...Bruce, don't bring me down!! 🤪🤪🤣🤣🤣
Labor day weekend 1979 this was big. Arizona kid who left for Denver in '72. I was sent to work in Palo Alto for two weeks. FM classical station was promoting Direct to Disc which was often early Digital. This was in constant rotation. Who, what is Gruce ? Yup, a banger.
One of my favorite songs since high school. This was on my playlist when I went to the gym to pump me up. "Mister Blue Sky" is the one from Guardians of the Galaxy. Another favorite. Jeff Lynn, the lead singer and writer and producer, went on to produce The Beatles final 3 songs and was a founding member of "The Travelling Wilburys". One of the most underrated performers in history.
Pegasus, great reaction as usual. This is probably my favorite E.L.O. song. Jeff Lynne (the primary singer and "star" personality of the band) was also in a supergroup called The Traveling Wilburys. That group featured Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison, and Bob Dylan. I know you've enjoyed Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, so you may enjoy some of the songs by the Wilburys as well. If you haven't heard it there's a song that has always sounded to me like it's a sort of companion piece to this one from 2006. It's called "I don't Feel Like Dancing" from a band called Scissor Sisters, and it features Elton John on the piano (he also is listed as a co-writer). That song has the same kind of infectious, upbeat, happy sound and also features a lot of falsetto singing (the head voice or upper register that Jeff Lynne uses in the chorus of "Don't Bring Me Down") and added electronic noise effects. Since you liked this song so much, you may also like that one.
ELO has a lot of great songs. One of my all-time faves is "Twilight", which runs together with "Prelude" (together--"Prelude/Twilight". It's amazing. "Don't Bring Me Down" is one rare instance where ELO doesn't employ ancient orchestral instruments,
The elohim bit... Listen to their album called Time. That is when I started looking up words that were used in the songs... when played backward or forward. Names mentioned for example are Elijah and Galizur. (Galizur is synonymous for Enki, angel Raziel, Prometheus, etc.)
Another trippy tune by them was "Fire on High".....the more I watch your reactions the more I'm sure you would have loved just listening to the radio while we were growing up.....lots of great music....
Love ELO, and my older brother loved this song! "Mr. Blue Sky," "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "Telephone Line" are bangers, also "Handle with Care" from his time in the Traveling Wilbury's with the other legends. Sadly, my brother was killed by a drunk driver last year, so hearing this today brings back really happy memories of him playing that 45 over and over again.🥰

Jeff Lynn, one of the Travaling Wilburys.
You should check out Turned to Stone...great beat. These guys were part of my childhood
Loved Jeff Lynn in Traveling Wilburys too
I remember hearing this when I was a kid when my parents would play it - has an always will be a banger!
I love Jeff Lynne and ELO, since the first time I heard them. I had all of their albums at one time.
What a track brilliant thanks for review 😊😊❤❤
The most funny ELO's song! My fav! I LOVE IT!
Saw them in Denver. Their concerts are amazing!!!
The song was on the film called Paul,
I never looked the lyrics up and always thought they were saying Bruce. It will always be Bruce to me lol
ELO .... E-L-O... forever!! 🔥🔥🔥
He says "before I get off the floor", but for sure when this played in a club everyone got ON the floor!
This vinyl album was one of the first I ever bought new at Tower Records on the strip SoCal. Loved it then, love it still!! ✨💖✨🎸
Thanks for doing this song. My first ever favorite song on the radio as a toddler. Happy memories
This song was a huge hit and had constant radio play.
This song is so awesome. Love ELO. Love your reaction!
Love this song and for many years i thought he was saying Bruce.
This song always takes me back to the rollerskating rink in the early '80s. :)
ELO is really groovy , every single track is dynamite x ❤
Another trippy tune by them was "Fire on High".....the more I watch your reactions the more I'm sure you would have loved just listening to the radio while we were growing up.....lots of great music....
Also listen to Hold on Tight by ELO. You will love it.
