- Please don't be mad at me -- I'm PAINTING solid wood furniture!! I promise it'll be okay :) This is for the Spirit of Christmas collaboration/challenge and I'm donating 100% of the profits of this sale to Portland Family Homeless Solutions.
Today I'm thrifting, cleaning, sanding, painting, sealing and staging!

@@KnowCanDo They sure are. And even though my daughter is only 16 and school going, she was so delighted to be able to treat me to a caramel frappucino while we waited for the bus home. Good shopping, good food, tasty treats and good company - can't beat it. Now I have to get back to finish tidying the house for the big day!!! Refuelled, rested and ready for action.

I just love what you did with these. To me, the maple looks much better slightly white washed than the orangey original stain. Funny story, the factory that built these is about half an hour from where I grew up.

Kling furniture was a very big company from the early 1900s thru the 1960s. They specialized in honest Colonial reproductions, and weren’t the finest furniture but very good middle of the road solid furniture. I have and also had some very nice pieces and are a dream to work with!

Thanks Scott! Luckily my corner of the internet is pretty kind, but a lot of my furniture flipper friends get hate when they paint wood because there are some vocal purists out there that believe wood should always be restored and never painted. I respectfully disagree!

Wow Clara! These nightstands look amazing! Love what you did and the organization you chose. We used to live in the PDX area and are currently in Bend. PNW love! I'm happy that I found your channel from participating in this challenge/collab and I love so much that you mentioned the oven cleaner thing. I hate stripping, but I hate oven cleaning more so why would I do that to myself? New sub! 😁💜

When painting the inside of something it might be helpful to start down and back and then work your way out. The elbows will not get in the finished wet paint.

Pretty! Think I would of cut off the “curls” at the bottom to compliment that hardware. More straight across. Just a thought, regardless you did a very nice job!!

Haha! Thanks, Sydney! Oh my goodness.... it's a loooong story. But basically I ended up getting it at essentially a garage sale. They were COMPLETELY RUSTED, so I deep cleaned, removed rust, spray painted, and then added the gold. It was a whole long saga which I obviously didn't include all of that in the video but! Sorry to say, it is vintage, it is second hand, and I have no idea where you could find it again!
Some observations :
1. I liked the way these nightstands turned out. You did a great job.
2. Making furniture from solid wood commercially is no big sacred deal. Usually some bland, no grain wood like maple or poplar or who knows what is used then covered with some thick (and hard to remove!) finish to hide its blandness. It’s usually a surface coating, like paint so paint over it!
3. Oven cleaner. Don’t get me started! It’s nasty and ineffectual on ovens as it is, why use it any where else?

Hard maple. Oh, that paint is painful. I know the style is dated. But it hurts just watching you do it. BTW, I have had trouble using stripper in cooler weather, too.
Thank you for not recommending oven cleaner. Oven cleaner is for ovens. I mean if you’re stuck on top of a mountain, you are 250 miles to the nearest hardware store, you are flat broke and you have absolutely no way to order and charge wood stripper… then OK, (I would hate it 😱 but OK). If you absolutely “had” to get a piece done then you “maybe” a person could try oven cleaner. I couldn’t do it. There’s a reason why certain products are made for certain materials, I have to believe that. 😜
Haha for sure! I think the issue is that it’s very common for us to want to try out viral “hacks” and it’s very natural to want an easier way to do something as annoying as stripping wood. But in this particular case, it’s actually dangerous and it is scaring me that people with big audiences and influences are recommending it since someone could get really harmed. ☹️
Hey, why do you use Polycrylic as opposed to Polyurethane to seal?

I tried citristrip and didnt like it! and the oven cleaner fad is a liiiiiil teeny tiny bit overrated lol
