The problem isn't that she's unlikable. It's that she is framed to be likable. The writers really want you to root for her even when she's disrespectful, cold, and arrogant ALL THE TIME.

I don’t think the narrative will ultimately vindicate her attitude. A character like this can’t be sustained on arrogance alone, especially given Galadriel canonically outgrew her youthful arrogance. I believe she will be humbled, probably by stumbling into some horrible trap that she would’ve seen if she’d be less singleminded and would listen to anyone else’s advice.

    • @codinghusky5196

....yes, I agree, but the problem is, it won't be believable because she's way too LOW at this point TO be redeemed.
This is the Kylo Ren situation again. They had the dude murder his own father at Rey's eyes, then spend 2 movies blowing up planets, killing and maiming her friends, trying to kill her two mentors (Leia and Luke) and making MULTIPLE attemptsnto kill her - and then expected us not to LAUGH when they have them kiss???
It's writing for complete idiots 101: nobody with a functioning brain cell could BUY this shit.

Guyladriel rivals Bo-Katan also known as Boo-Karen (who wanted to "speak"to the "manager" Gideon) in her Karenism. I didn´t think it is possible.
I´m starting to think the woke writers are closeted misogynists because there is no way how you can genuinely try to write a strong woman and end up with the ultimate Karen every time.

My impression of gladriel in lotr: wow she is beauty, grace yet there is a power underneath all of that. She doesn't even need to express it out loud, I can clearly feel it in her presence. Yet despite all of that she is kind and generous. Her temptation with the one true ring showed that even somebody as wise and kind as her could easily be corrupted given the chance yet she denied it, proving that she, as well as Gandalf and frodo, can resist the temptation. What an extraordinary character

And it's in a situation where she is being reprimanded for violating several laws, is behaving very aggressively, and during her reprimand she makes a demand for trans-oceanic transport and for military forces to be placed under her command (in a nation where she is not a citizen and legally a civilian/foreign national). At this point, in the Second Age, Galadriel had already lived many thousands of years, was married to Celeborn, and, together, they were the leaders of a group of elves, while under the rule of Gil-galad. She was not running around, unmarried, angry and hunting orcs or acting like Bear Grylls. In the books, she is described as "the fairest of all elves' and one of great wisdom - something the writers of this show have no knowledge of, apparently.

@@avruvimtu2204 Sociopaths may cry and they may feel self-pity: that's probably all it was. It is myth that sociopaths don't experience emotions- it is more that they don't feel emotions towards *other people*. They don't have empathy or any regard for the feelings of others.
Galadriel in the series spent enough time in the series using a pretense of compassion and empathy to manipulate people. Neither were genuine.
In this scene though, I think she cried because she felt sorry for herself. A self-centred feeling.
It's kind of funny because in the books none of this "Sauron killed Finrod and now I must avenge him!" nonsense exists. Finrod sacrificed himself willingly to save Beren and through his noble act, he was soon reincarnated in Valinor.

Yes, but in a YA school drama, worst stuff the character does is bully some kid or sell some drugs. Here, this woman spends hundreds of years dragging her soldiers into death and battle, then goes around threatening people, refusing to follow her King's orders, insulting Kings and Queens and now endangering lives of 500+ people...
I mean, let alone the fact she should've been murdered or drowned in a cage for any single one of her affront to royalty, it's NOT stuff you get REDEEMED for. It's too big, too bad.
People wouldn't respect the LotR Galadriel as much as they did if THIS was her backstory!

I think the character to emulate for the portrayal of Galadriel would be more Joan of Arc -ish. The reason why men, grown grizzled combat veterans to conscript French levies would follow her to their deaths is because she was charismatic, she understood the situation, she boosted morale by encouraging others, not to jibe and make stern faces to demand a following.

    • @whiskii

    • @englishlady9797
      @englishlady9797 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Galadriel is the opposite: she's an awful leader. She just shouts, screams and demands respect because she has not earned it: and then when her irrational actions cause her men to mutunty, she just demands more: treating them like disposable commodities who exist only to serve her. She just thinks she's enttitled to he because of who she is, rather than proving herself.
I prefer to compare her to the characters in the movies and the Books. Aragorn is a natural leader who has already spent years as a Ranger: Boromir was a beloved leader who had been fighting to defend his people for years.
Joan wasn't always so charasmatic: she was a teenager: when she felt people weren't doing what she wanted she too was prone to rages, tantrums and threats.

Even the "young" Galadriel in Valinor see through Fëanor's darkness and only followed him because of her own ambitions, and NOT for REVENGE (she never did something for the sake of revenge, she may be rebellious, stubborn and proud but she's not a bitch like Guyladriel in ROP). She ended up being as a student to a Maia and chilling in her protected realm during the First Age. Oh, and in any versions, she's already WITH her husband at this point.

I feel like there's few well casted character in this entire show, Elendil the tall is one of them. It's like he was plucked straight from the trilogy, I can picture him clear as day in any scene within Gondor. His mannerisms, his wisdom, the classic 'Men of Gondor' look to him with the shoulder length hair and windscarred face. Elrond isn't too bad, but I fail to see that controlled strength and passion in him like Hugo Weaving's portayal. Weaving had this constant look of serene calm and understanding, beneath which was this simmering coal of emotion. You could see it in his scenes with Aragorn, especially when he presents Anduril. He was proud of his work, but he hated that he had to do it. He had faith and respect for the man he was giving it to, but couldn't look past the fact that this same man was the reason his daughter will die.
It's a masterclass of acting, whereas kiddy Eldrond here looks stoned all the time. I won't bother mentioning old pignose scrunchface over here and her arrogant, 'woe is me' bullshit. Other people have already said everything I wanted to say lmfao.

Then I learned that she is supposed to be the good, the best, the hero, the voice of reason. It's mind boggling. In a way, it's also helpful, as I'm going to use it as inspiration on how to portray my narcissistic, holier-than-thou OC who is supposed to be evil and wholly irredeemable. It's hilarious to think of him as the good guy. This show gives us insight into the mind of a true narcissist.

On top of that when Poe cuts her off she won't bother contacting the bombers and their escort and ordering them to retreat. But despite that it is only Poe's fault they all died.
Seriously years later and I still have no idea what the actual plan was to deal with the dreadnought because it was so contradictory.

@@jacquelineking5783 That was NOT Princess Leia. That was some revolting Kathleen Kennedy creation. It was a desecration of the character.

I don’t know if Galadriel is unlikable or even if that’s the main issue. This series has been unwatchable because there are too many subplots and they are skipped through too rapidly before we can form connections with the characters. I think most people would say that if there is a story thread where they feel any connection, it’s the hobbits.
The problem with Galadriel’s unlikability isn’t that she is unlikable. It’s that the screenplay doesn’t breathe for long enough for us to develop any sympathy. That’s the trick to unlikable characters-you give them and the audience the breathing space to form a sympathetic emotional basis. You reveal an endearing quality that might be a flaw or a virtue. You slowly develop the quality to make it seem like it leads eventually to redemption. This generates hope. Whether it does lead to redemption or ultimately disappoints is part of the tension of the story. The story rushes so quickly through Galadriel’s subplot that any endearing qualities can’t take hold. She just seems like a b-i-t-c-h.
Contrast this with other stories featuring strong women, such as Mad Max Fury Road or Atomic Blonde, both featuring Charlize Theron. The characters she portrays are ruthless, but the stories are written in such a way that we can develop an attachment. Both movies are very fast paced, but they let the characters breathe.
My opinion is based on watching the first three episodes, which were on the whole quite dull. Too many character plots, not enough time to develop characters or form attachments to them. It’s a big mess. Maybe this changes in later episodes and I should be more patient, but I feel that the show itself is too impatient, like it’s got to get through some quota of plot points each episode. Terrible storytellling.
