I made some terrible decisions as a small business owner - where I am now

  • I've recently made some bad decisions for my business... in contrast, I've also recently made some of the best decisions for myself as an individual. Nope, nothing magical happened, I didn't find a way to work 'smarter' while still staying true to myself, but we are going to be ok, and healthier and happier because of it. I wanted to talk about this, perhaps to deglamorize my experience being self-employed, what I'm doing about it, and where I am now. The future is unknown, that being said, that can be super scary when faced with expecting a child in five months and having to take time off work! We've done our best to save and plan ahead, we have supportive parents and know we will be ok, but making the decision to cut back on work for health and balance has been incredibly daunting to say the least. The good thing is we are facing the future as a team. I wanted to share because I want my story to be a reminder to all of you to stay true to yourself, very few things are worth selling your health and life. Make sure you make changes with that in mind, know what it is that is priceless and that you value above all else. Let it guide you. For us, that means living very simply, not going on trips, being careful with your spending, and it's worth it. But this may be different for you. We are all unique, and that is what makes it interesting. Sending you much love and light ❤️

I just watched your video and would like to offer a kind bit of advice. I’m a 70 year old artist, mother of 4, grandmother to 5. You must not bother addressing other people’s concerns on your choices in life. Live intuitively, don’t overthink, don’t try to explain who you are. Live by faith, it works out, it really does. My husband and I have been married coming up on 46 years and most of our extended family don’t understand why we choose to live so simply but happy to say, the proof is in the pudding, we have a beautiful life that now they envy. Be true to yourself with no need to explain. Your child will appreciate the freedom that brings to you as a mother

@pasuhi - Thank you for saying what I was thinking, but have a hard time putting into words as you so beautifully have. I am a 59 y.o. artist, mother of 4, grandmother of 5, married 36 years to my husband (my very best friend) and I have found the very same is true. Live by faith and do it simply Paola, like a child would. Oh the wonderful blessings that come! xoxoxo

Co workers think I’m boring, one told me I live the life of an “old lady!” I’m 35, single mom of two. I love reading, journaling, watching horror movies, drawing and walking through the woods. I keep getting told I need to go out to the bars and meet a man, none of that sounds appealing to me! I really value my quiet time, I’m still heading from what my ex put me through. I’m finally just being me, doing what makes me happy. At least for the most part, I’m still working through a lot. But I’m finally doing it! Just be you, do what you need to do for you! ❤️

Agree, agree! I’ve been a “professional” artist/crafter for 25 years. Went to prestigious art schools, had a business with a few employees after school, licensing and publishing deals with large companies, blah blah blah, did all the things you’re “supposed” to do, got really sick. After a decade of that disaster, I left everything and everyone behind, bought a van to live and travel in to reconnect with my true self. Now I live on a small island building my own home as time/budget allows, work odd jobs and make art and crafts primarily for myself that I sell when I can/want. Never been happier, even though I’m “doing it all wrong”😂!

@kathyann9643 no, you're not alone there. Many years ago, there were a range of magazines such as Grassroots and Simply Living, I guess they were the precursors to a movement *back to basics* that we see today. Simplicity doesn't automatically equal deprivation, you and I know it (but many have been brainwashed to beleive a consumerist, materialist dream). The dream easily becomes nightmarish if life goes out of balance, for sure

Paola - I never comment. But this requires one. You have tapped into immense wisdom. Never apologize for it. If anything, keep embracing it. I’ve been an entrepreneur for 20 years and I have worked with a lot of these “build bigger, more more more” business owners. Not a single one. Let me repeat. Not a single one is actually happy. They never feel like what they are doing is enough. Almost all of them have health issues. More is not the answer. Enough is. Health is everything. Family is everything. Being aligned and living a peaceful happy life with the time to actually live it is *everything*. Find your balance. Find your enough. And truly, let that be enough. Don’t hold yourself hostage to anyone else’s definition of what that is. You are absolutely on the right path. Thank you for doing what you do and for being the cottage fairy 🧚‍♂️ You have enriched all of our lives with your presence and art!!

I can relate so much here. I started my channel as a hobby and never though it would become my ""job"" one day, but so far I'm happy I've never had a single video sponsored, and I don't sell merch because that's not my vision either. I think this is the secret to some kind of longevity of any art form: do what makes you happy, and you'll do it for a long time. After a few years watching every video you release, I think it's safe to say that you're staying true to your vision, and this is why so many people are still here supporting you. You may have made "mistakes", like everybody does, but in the end, we're still here to spend a timeless moment with the beautiful Cottage Fairy 😊 As you're saying: you're enough. Take care dear Paola!

Someone told me I was boring and I needed to do more. I finally got frustrated with him and told him I like my life just the way it is. I know what it is to live in chaos. I don’t want that. I live the life I live because of that chaos I’ve been through. I am finally comfortable with who I am. People always tried to make me feel like something was wrong with me because I’m quiet & shy. I finally fully came into myself last year (and the process began long before that but he made me realize how happy I am with me & who I am). I told him that he has an issue with my life because he is walking chaos. Well, let’s just say we no longer speak for various reasons but that’s a major factor…for me at least..he may say something different directed at me 😂…and I’m okay with some of that too 🤷🏾‍♀️…even my brother tries to get me to do more…I think I might need to have that talk with him too. 😂

But I've always gravitated toward making them gifts, whether for friends and family or for myself. I'm starting to consider what it might look like to start selling, but there's a big part of me that's wary of the push to make everything you enjoy doing profitable. It doesn't have to be. It can just be life-giving.

People told me I should be volunteering and I should be doing more interesting things and one family member even said " live or die"... And I'm glad I instead listened to my own heart and I found the simple things that bring me joy...an they are enough. I never wanted more than just enough. So now I work to help save feral cats, and I pick up trash every day for the environment, and I teach my Mexican neighbor English, and I love my simple simple life. As a fellow cat lady….thank you for what you do to help the feral cats. I’ve been feeding and caring for a feral for over three years. Finally last summer he started getting closer and closer to me, eventually purring and rubbing up against my legs. Since I can’t bring him in my home I took him to my local shelter, where I do some work with, and now he’s a lover boy (orange cat), and ready for adoption! I’m so proud of him! Bless you for what you do! ❤❤❤

I don't think you even realize how much value you bring through your videos. It's so valuable to see a simple, humble lifestyle while everyone only pushes you to make a lot of money and travel around the world. Lately, I have been questioning myself a lot. I also feel that I don't need much; sun, relationships, and nature give me everything I need. I don't want to conquer the world anymore. I let go of my ambitions. And seeing your videos is like a confirmation that it's actually alright to live a 'boring' life, and you don't need to become anyone. Your existence is more than enough already. Thank you 🙏💛

I always loved this certain short story of a fisherman: one day a hard working man in a suit finds this fisherman next to his small fishing boat sitting in the sun in the afternoon. They start talking and the buisy man asks him why he isn't fishing anymore. The fisherman tells him he already went fishing in the morning and catched a few fish that he brought home to his wife. The man in the suit tells him how if he would just go fishing again in the afternoon he would catch more fish that he could sell, make more money, buy a larger fishing boat to catch more fish, to make more money, than he could hire people to help him and earn more money that he could use to expand his business,... And then when he would be retiring he could sit down in the sun and relax and enjoy his life. Then the fisherman responses: "but that's what I am already doing right now"

As a Self -employed artist for 20 years- I feel this on so many levels. I refuse to outsource and hire assistants- I cannot meet demand for the product I create- and I’m okay with that 🤷‍♀️im an empath -- i cannot create good art when stressed so yeah I’m serving less and charging them alot! Bravo Paola, bravo. So much wisdom in your words. You have probably run into the story of the Brazilian fisherman and the American businessman. It is appropriate here. If not, here it is:
There was once a businessman who was sitting by the beach in a small Brazilian village.
As he sat, he saw a Brazilian fisherman rowing a small boat towards the shore having caught quite few big fish.
The businessman was impressed and asked the fisherman, “How long does it take you to catch so many fish?”
The fisherman replied, “Oh, just a short while.”
“Then why don’t you stay longer at sea and catch even more?” The businessman was astonished.
“This is enough to feed my whole family,” the fisherman said.
The businessman then asked, “So, what do you do for the rest of the day?”
The fisherman replied, “Well, I usually wake up early in the morning, go out to sea and catch a few fish, then go back and play with my kids. In the afternoon, I take a nap with my wife, and evening comes, I join my buddies in the village for a drink - we play guitar, sing and dance throughout the night.”
The businessman offered a suggestion to the fisherman.
“I am a PhD in business management. I could help you to become a more successful person. From now on, you should spend more time at sea and try to catch as many fish as possible. When you have saved enough money, you could buy a bigger boat and catch even more fish. Soon you will be able to afford to buy more boats, set up your own company, your own production plant for canned food and distribution network. By then, you will have moved out of this village and to Sao Paulo, where you can set up HQ to manage your other branches.”
The fisherman continues, “And after that?”
The businessman laughs heartily, “After that, you can live like a king in your own house, and when the time is right, you can go public and float your shares in the Stock Exchange, and you will be rich.”
The fisherman asks, “And after that?”
The businessman says, “After that, you can finally retire, you can move to a house by the fishing village, wake up early in the morning, catch a few fish, then return home to play with kids, have a nice afternoon nap with your wife, and when evening comes, you can join your buddies for a drink, play the guitar, sing and dance throughout the night!”
The fisherman was puzzled, “Isn’t that what I am doing now?”

I'm currently struggling big time. I was living my life with the usual struggles but I had a good job, a home and what I thought was a happy marriage. It wasn't perfect but there was a lot of good. Then I was blindsided by my husband taking off with someone else, losing my "secure" government job, then I got sick and became clinically depressed. I don't have kids because the X didn't want them (but had them with someone else) so that didn't happen for me. It's been brutal to be honest so I am grateful for this channel as Paola you have shown me that we can be true to ourselves; that there are kind, sensitive people who are unique and true to themselves. Sometimes I wish we all lived in the same area so we could be surrounded by a like-minded community. I wish I could meet you all.

But deep down in my heart I feel satisfied with what I have. I don’t dream of living in a mansion, I don’t need a nice car. I yearn for simplicity in my life, quietness and slowness. My dreams may be laughable to some but to me that is MY dream. People seem to have an opinion about how you decide to live your life, I never tell anyone that they’re boring or weird for choosing how to live their life.

I used to push SO hard to be competitive in my industry and try to make as much money as possible and squeeze as much out of each day as possible... but then I developed Ulcerative Colitis.

I saw my sister struggle with her pottery business too, versus doing what she wanted to do and becoming more and more unhappy. She ditched it in the end, in favour of making pottery for herself, her friends and family now, and not relying on it as a source of income. Peace of mind in a relaxed body are far more important for many people, in conjunction with wanting to be creative. Commerce and true creativity are seldom good bedfellows. So it's the best decision to cut right back in any direction you can and examine where you are going and what you hope to achieve. Excellent video!

Awe, thanks for opening up. We would be great friends😂😂😂 I have a small home town business from home. I bake and make skin oils and salves. The first year was so successful it shocked me. But I was baking every moment of every single day and then packaging until midnight. Like you said it turned into 24/7 work. In return I was exhausted, I didn't enjoy it like I used to as it used to relax me and didn't anymore, my mind was foggy, my body hurt, and the quality of my goods I felt went down. So the next year (which was 2023) I pulled back 95% and got a part time cozy job taking care of 1 year olds in a daycare. I feel so much better physically and mentally now even though I don't have a lot of business sales anymore and I lost a lot of people. Because now I can leave work at work, spend all my time with my family when we're together, have spiritual and mental time for myself, and I LOVE those babies and my coworkers really aren't even terrible😂 my quality of goods in my business went back up, I enjoy it again when i do create, and I can go back to be just intentional, slow paced, and boring. Thanks for this video. It's so comforting to see others out there who are content with just enough 😊

In the beginning it was the perfect job because I loved baking but as time passed I lost the joy of being able to bake, decorate and do my own marketing and make sales.
I ended up being stressed, overworked, sleep deprived and physically sore because I had to stand all day..
I now do an office job which I totally love since I am working from home mostly but the best part is being able to see my pets during the day, water my plants during breaks and just take stand outside soaking up the sunlight and taking in the way birds talk to each other while trees are swaying in the breeze.

You showed me that it is possible to be happy, really happy with less “things”. Your videos of your walks in solitude, taking in and enjoy Nature, showed me the way. They changed my life! BLESS YOU for being the person you are…
Maybe taking the time to go back and watch your earliest videos will do wonders for you?
Listen to your words… Live life for YOU, and not for others…BE YOURSELF… The Cottage Fairy who has touched so many people’s lives. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for showing me the path to true happiness.
May God watch over you and your family, and provide you with the inner peace and serene wellbeing that you certainly deserve…

Paola, I always love your videos but I must say that this video is my favourite. You are almost like my soul sister, we are so similar. I am a highly sensitive person and I have also struggled with perfectionism and being a workaholic. As an elementary school teacher, I love my children so much and I have always put their needs above my own. After 7 years of slaving away as a teacher, my body finally reached its breaking point. I am currently on sick leave and I am enjoying time off away from work. It's crazy how being a teacher was such a huge part of my identity that when I finally stepped away from it, I could find time to explore who I truly was. I know that I am a daughter of Christ and that God loves me, regardless of my achievements or hard work. You talked about feeling unworthy in your video and I can definitely relate. I think the moment when I realized that God still loves me even in my brokenness and despite my imperfections, that is when I felt true peace in my heart. Thank you for baring your soul out in this video. I think it isn't easy being able to be so vulnerable to strangers on the Internet. It takes a lot of courage and inner strength. I pray that you would find peace and happiness as you live a life that is more frugal, more slow-paced and ultimately more satisfying to you. Sending you love and hugs ❤

The reason I watch your channel is because you're not like all those out there doing it all and preaching productivity and hustling. I'm getting ready to have a baby like you are, and it has completely shifted my perspective on what's important and what I want from life. I've hustled and done it all and I've realised that's not the life for me either. Thank you so much for being so real and so you.

Thank you very much Paola for talking about this! You are speaking from the bottom of my heart! I've been going through some similar business adjustment in my life as well, and it took me 5 years of trying and doing until I finally understood that what these business experts and coaches were telling me are just unnatural for my personality. It's been 2 years now I've been running my business under my own terms and financially might not be as rewarding as it used to be but I only do dream projects - literally 100% of my projects are the ones I'd do for free if needed - and this brings more value in my life than $$$$$. And somehow the $$$ is always enough and I am never in a need of more. So gratitude and keep on following your true self because she is a wonderful real fairy!

I did the corporate thing for years and I retired a little earlier than I had planned. I was exhausted and suffered from nerve pain. Two surgeries later, I'm feeling much better. I adopted a slow living life style and at 71, I am more happy and content than I ever had been. This is truly the happiest time of my life. God bless you. Don't be afraid of what you are facing. I usually don't comment on your videos, but this one really resonated with me. We are enough! We've just been indoctrinated to believe we're not enough. We just have to find our own centers and determine what is enough for each of us and be okay with it. We were meant to enjoy our lives to the fullest, not to slave away at a job we don't like just to make more money. We are meant to create the life we want and live the life we love, and that should be enough.

I worked in traditional, corporate jobs for 30 years. Corporate employers don’t care about your physical, mental or emotional health. They just push for more sacrifice on your part. If you are lucky enough to be self employed, enjoy that freedom and listen to your mind, body and heart. It’s just not worth it to put those things second to a job. You pay for constant stress later in your life. Live within your limits and financial means. You’ll be happier in the long run. ❤

People coming up to me and commenting/questioning on my life decisions has hurt me a lot during the past months. They imply that you are being "lazy" if you don´t work 45hrs a week, if you want a slow and peaceful life. Thank you so much for sharing these feelings and thoughts with us. The dark side of “hustle culture” and its effects on women in particular is a topic that deserves much more attention. So many of us have had (and continue to have) our self worth tied into what we can produce- artists especially. But the artists job has always been to question the boundaries of what our culture and society is influencing us all to do- not to become slaves to a cultural norm that has damaging effects on the mind, body and soul.
Your video is incredible. Stepping back, focusing on your family and listening to your intuition is the ultimate investment in your future. People always talk about making money- but family and health are the ultimate wealth

  • @brit4294
    @brit4294 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I think it's great you are staying authentic and being true to yourself and not pursuing turning your business into a huge business that could be very "successful" and profitable, in exchange for your own well being. Running a business like that clearly is not you and does not suit you. If I was doing what you're doing, I'd be the same way! That type of mentality would never fit me. I am so similar to you and also so sensitive. I personally believe there is really no need to expand your business to that extent and you are clearly have already had so much success with just being yourself ☺ and just because you "could" make these changes to expand your business into a huge business doesn't mean that you should or need to. I think what's most important is just doing what is in alignment with yourself even if on paper you are "less successful". You are the most successful when you are doing what is in alignment with yourself and what makes you feel happy, fulfilled, inspired and creative and forcing yourself to make these changes to your business clearly was not in alignment with that. So in my book that is not success if you find yourself constantly feeling miserable and stressed. So in my book these "bad decisions" you've made for your business were actually the right decisions to make. Like you said, having enough to live comfortably is what should matter and not over extending yourself to have "more success" just because society tells you you "should" do it. Your intuition and body was clearly trying to tell you that is not the right path for you. I also have always been content with having just enough to live comfortably and not caring to have anything more than that.

Good for you, being true to yourself. I'll bet those who want "more" out of you are those who are making money off of your talents, such as Etsy. Knowing this happens is exactly why I've never pulled the trigger on having my own small business. Unfortunately, our society revolves around money, not people. Stress DOES manifest itself physically, and we do need to put our health & well being first. My darling, you are not a business. You already do tons in front of the camera, and if that ends you owe nothing to your "audience". I find that my life is so much slower than most. It is so important to know women who love life like you do, or at least know you must not be a fixer.
I am proud of you! Becoming ready for a baby is not a side job - and you are not a side job! Again, it takes time to be who you are, which is more vital than the concerns of folks who may have concerns or judge your life. I encourage you to be yourself and have your own path. Don't worry about how you look to those who are drawn to the fast/ambitious lifestyle (in my opinion not the tempo of the earth). I love you, and hope you will remove the word "mistakes" from your vocabulary. God bless your soulful adventure.

I was a certified business coach for seven years, and at the same time, I owned a career and academic coaching business with employees and, before that, owned a marketing and advertising agency for 11 years. While running my coaching businesses, I went through chemo/radiation but kept on working and employing people. Now, as a “retired” business coach, I want others to know that you do not have to do what other business owners think you should do. Or grow your business beyond your personal goals and well-being. I hate to say this, but I have heard this story before. You are not a failure unless you are not doing what YOU want to do. I am so sorry this happened to you. I have also heard lousy business advice, mostly from other women business owners, to do more, work 24/7, and not care about our partners/spouses. I like making money as much as the next person, but there is a balance that can be achieved. We need to learn to value ourselves and learn how to create boundaries. I want to give you a big hug and tell you you’re enough; you’re unique and special and an inspirational and intelligent business owner.

You can see all this in people's astrological natal charts, actually. Some people do thrive on hustle culture like Capricorns and Virgos, and others, with, for instance, more Cancer or Pisces in their charts are going to be more sensitive and need much more time to rest and recharge. This is because there are lessons in each life plan and your content really helps those of us who need to be more laid back and mellow.
