Very cool that you decided to make the 2D version. Would be a shame if the original video would become unwatchable in the future, thus rendering it an example of the problem it tackles.

No. In VR showing a 2D image is just as pointless as sitting on a meeting watching a power point on a projector. And we are not talking a nice office or anything. But a old projector pointing at a wall interfering with wall clocks and whatever else. And no AC and air is stagnant so you get a headache + unconformable seating. For a power point that is booring, pointless and as good to watch at home without having to start up a car find parking and pay for all of that... Just to watch a power point.
16:9 and 4:3 is the only screen standards. Black bars is only allowed to bridge the gap. And possibly if a movie or whatever creator know wtf they are doing and not just being a ass about refusing to use the tools available to make stuff as good as possible. 16:9, VR, 4:3. Simple as.

Some interesting notes from film history:
On the Waterfront is a film made in 1954. Its a grest one. It was also shot to protect three aspect ratios: academy ratio (1.33:1), widescreen (1.85:1), and the middle ground 1.66:1, the widest image older square screen theaters could project. A lot of films from this era were shot this way so they could be sold to the largest number of theaters, and the director had no preference for any specific ratio. Criterion Collection released a whole set where the main feature on disc 1 is the middle ratio and the second disc has the film in both full frame and widescreen.
TWO YEARS EARLIER This is Cinerama released. And at release it only was shown in roadshow settings. This thing was not only taller (6 perfs high vs 4 perfs of literally every other film) but also used three reels of synced film side-by-side (along with a fourth for surround sound and a fifth with a “breakdown reel” of extra scenes for when this delicate system inevitabley broke and something went out of sync) for the first popular ultra widescreen experience. And for the Blu-ray releases of Cinerama films they invented “Smileboxing” to curve the image along the flat screens to simulate the giant Cinerama screens. So you can only see it sorta like it was intended at home if you have a curved TV or monitor, cause there’s only two or three Cinerama theaters left in the whole world.

So, how about addressing the trend for recent films and TV shows to be shot with such an utter lack of lighting that the viewer literally spends minutes at a time looking at an entirely black screen? I'd love to know the decision making and technical process behind *that* bit of cinematography.

It’s interesting how much people worry about “the fear of missing out”
Missing out on watching movies the “intended” way or playing games the “intended” way.
At some point, does it matter at all? We can’t experience everything, and no environment can fit in this elusive concept of artistic intent. The more you whittle it down, things are just not going to line up with this imaginary scenario.
Isn’t it more important the experience you walk away with, rather than focusing on what you missed out on?

Not gonna lie, I came here for 15:34. But also, as a huge fan of accessibiltiy (INCREDIBLY IRONIC given the video itself), thank you. In a really weird, meta sense, comparing the "VR" video and this "2D" video nails the point down even further - we can't watch the video in the way YOU, the creator, intended, and it doesn't come off right... but at the same time, we NEEDED it.

    Corrections:
16:9 is an invention of the digital age. People who saw Robin Hood in theaters originally would have saw it in 1.66:1 most likely, but there was leeway in either direction (1.85 and 1.33 being the most common by far). Some theaters would still have had 4:3 screens and shown it that way. In fact if you were to look at print of a sound movie from this era, the picture would actually be about 1.2:1 because the sound part takes up some of what used to be picture, so even in 4:3 it's cropped slightly. These movies were never meant to be seen in this full 1.2:1 height, and it was not uncommon for boom mics or other unwanted parts of the set to be at the extremes of the frame that would have been cropped out, even for home video releases.
Seinfeld wasn't "upscaled" to 4k, it was shot on film and rescanned in the 4k (or so) resolution it always existed in.
    Digital IMAX is usually 1.89:1

I like the modifications of this one, even tho the original is better :
    - announcement at the beginning about the intended version to watch it (see beginning of "Intro" chapter).
    - sponsorship replaced with a mid-roll (see "Ad Break" chapter).
    - fixed "IMAX" text not showing up at the beginning the the "IMAX" chapter in VR version (see beginning of "IMAX" chapter).
    - saying that that movie opening wasn't impressive because the viewer isn't watching in VR (see 14:05).
    - replacing some voice indicating that this video was made this way (in VR) to show properly the different ratio's aspects to letting you that this video was originally in VR so it can show properly the different ratio's aspects (see 15:45).
    - Ending the video with an apology of keeping you reminded that this is the worse version to watch (see 17:27).
Even tho I already watched it in VR, it was still pretty fun to see what changed.

I feel like watching this in 2D fails to get your point across when I can't look to my left and see 'cope seethe mald'.
This is still one of your best works yet, and now I can upvote it twice!

If this was a game you could argue that this 2D version is the Definitive Edition because it takes out the surfshark ad and adds in extra content in the with the beginning/end bits. But it does take out the high quality cutscene (the VR movie simulations) for Phone friendly quality cuts. So uhhhhhhh....Portable Demake *throws the video next to Donkey Kong Country 3D for the 3DS and Persona 3 Portable* A remake but for the portable console
At least it's not a Silent Hill HD Collection

I am not using adblock at the moment but also youtube ads have gotten so bad lately... like sometimes they force me to watch 2 unskipable 20 second ads in a row and it is always the worst garbage they can sell you and don't get me started on the ads that happen outside of videos...
And i hate that i can't just say "hey i am not interested in this ad" when i click on the settings button near the ad google wants me to report them and i don't have any reportable proof i am just uninterested in the 5th fake dating app this week

As someone watching on a pc with a rtx 3060 and good internet, the 2d version of this video is so much better. I'd only consider watching the 180 version in VR.

Rewatched this video now, after having seen only the original back when it released, and now just realized that I was supposed to watch that one with like, an actual VR headset, not just staring at my tiny-ass phone while i flicked the screen from side to side with my thumb to see if there was some weird easter egg somewhere. I don't know how to end this comment but i want it to be with some sort of commentary about accessibility, different aspect ratios, blah blah blah

How ironic that a video talking about original works being cut down due to accessibility needed to be cut down due to accessibility. Nevertheless, the original VR version of this video is very well mane and I hope it doesn't discourage Noodle to experiment with VR
