Great job. A suggestion if I may, wrap your roller skin tightly with painters' tape before use. When you pull the tape off it takes most of the loose fibers off of the skin.
If you don't want roller lint, try a redtree 3/16 nap mini-mohair roller. I use them for epoxy paint like Alexseal that has agressive solvents, and they last pretty well. UHMWPE plastic works well for trailer bunks and other things that need to slide. Thanks for the tip on scoring the tape. I'm using Dynel and graphite filled epoxy for the same purpose on a wooden kayak skeg, and getting that tape off was a bear.
Awesome, glad to have you aboard! I enjoy reviving this old boat, been a ton of work, but all the hard stuff is almost over! So ready to get it on the water.
You need a roller knap that is made for solvent based paints. It also helps if you wrap painters tape around the entire nap and pull it to de-shed the Knap prior to use.
@@SendItJonBoats yeah, I dealt with the same problem every time I would use oil based products. Usually it’s not a problem when you spray oils on, but when you roll them, there are specific roller naps that are for latex/water based paints, and others for oil/solvent based products. The latex naps will shed like crazy in oil paints. Took me a long time to figure that one out.

I use cheap cooking spray and it helps prevent buildup fairly well... nice job on your boat .. let me know if you ever try it on a lawn mower. Thanks
I am happy with it so far. Only been 2 seasons and no real wear yet. I would never want to get stuck again without it though. Slides off the mud much easier.
with the microfiber rollers you have to wrap it with that tape you used to mask and pull it off and itll leave the it clean and pull that loose lint off, it's actually the best roller you can use but you have to do that extra step
Why are most jon boats "roller" painted as opposed to sprayed? You would assume that because of the uneven surfaces on a jon, spray would almost always be the application method of choice.
No need to repaint, just scuff it real good and apply right over the old paint so long as it is not peeling. If it is peeling you will need to sand it all off. But yes it can go over fiberglass.
Bonds to fiberglass so long as it is properly prepped. I have not tested it for abrasion but I know the airboat guys have been using it for years and they say it works well. It will need to be touched up in the future but that is easy, clean, scuff, and put on another coat.
It does fairly well if you keep in mind it’s a sacrificial coating, and you will have to reapply eventually dependent on use. I have 2 years on my fiberglass layout boat bottom, and I think I did 3 coats of just gatorglide (no gator base) on top of the gel coat after sanding it. And I have minimal wear through on one spot and a few scratches from rocks. I drag the boat over dry land a bit and I didn’t notice any real reduction in difficulty to drag it, but it’s easier to slide on and off my trailer for sure. Personally I probably wouldn’t put it on a wave runner unless you really beach it every single time you ride it to a sandbar or something, but even then. Looks like a great bottom coat product, and according to the website it will stick to just about anything including fiberglass (but not to UHMW). Never said I was an expert or this was the best way to do it... it is just the way I do it. I have an obsession with wax and grease remover chemicals lol. It's like Franks Hot Sauce... I put that sh*t on everything!
I have a 17’ bass tracker with some ribs on the bottom how much gator glide would I need I was looking at the gallon size of G2 and does it come with the gator base or is it sold separately
Is there any type of paint or coating that would protect aluminum boats from rusting in salt water?
Any coating will help, but aluminum does not really rust in salt water, it just oxidizes.
Lmfao ur joking right?
@@tird108 nope... I paint old aluminum boats all the dang time, never seen aluminum boat rust. They just get heavily oxidized and crusty and pitted.
What paint stripper did you end up using that actually worked? Bout to strip mine this weekend
Clean Stip gel... it comes in a tin can and works really well.
How much Gator glide did you end up using on this boat?
This is what I'm planning on doing this summer man. Thanks for the tips and your body looks awesome.
It's good stuff, you won't regret it.
Wish I could have you do this to mine! What would I do different to put this on outside since I don't have a shop with a controlled atmosphere?
The 3 big things to watch for with Gator Glide is 1. don't put it on at night 2. don't do it in direct sunlight 3. don't apply it when its raining or overly humid. Get you a covered area on a warm day and get to it dude, it's easy. Just a lot of time standing there rolling.
Thanks!

Looks like a great bottom coat product, and according to the website it will stick to just about anything including fiberglass (but not to UHMW). I see it is _not_ recommended for full time saltwater use as well. I know a lot of people who use different colors for each coat of their anti-fouling paint, it does make it easier to know when you need to reapply it, and they've got LOTS of colors.
Yes sir! It is good stuff. I am no where near salt water so I didn't even look into that. Glad you mentioned it because I will have to let people know when they ask about it.
Your comment caught my eye and was about to correct you and say UHMWPE doesn't come in spray form. Then i actually read it haha. I wish it did
I is fine for salt water! The site states our "FR" fouling release is for fresh water only. All GatorGlide products are made for salt and fresh water but not to set in salt water year round. Just FYI
@@davidward2370 Thanks for the clarification. As you can probably tell from my handle here, I'm more familiar with freshwater, although _I_ want to move to Florida, my better half doesn't so . . .
@@michiganengineer8621 bring her on vacation and pack heavy lol.
Hey I have a question are you going to put the bench seats back in the boat ?
Good question, no I am building an all aluminum framed storage and deck for bow fishing, and cat fishing. Then the middle and back will be open space for duck hunting and hauling stuff.
Doesn't naphtha have an oil in it?
No oil in it, body shops have been using it for years for degreasing. Thats where I learned it from, an old panel beater.
Gonna have to do a slick coating before and after on our newest builds for speed test. I think it's helps out alot possibly 🤔
Thats one thing I wish I would have done is a before and after speed test. Im sure it will help a little.
How did the speed test turn out before and after?
@Adam Delano I don't think necessarily gets much more top speed but helps it get on plane much faster after that most of the boat is out of the water.
Also when I order the gator glide if I order it black with the gator base also be black ? Or is the color only for the base and all g2 gator glide is black ?
Is it “critter proof” in saltwater?
Not sure, I don't get out in salt water much and none of the critters in GA could damage it easily. Unless its a swimming Emu... those things are evil!
Where did you get this boat?
How is it compared to Raptor product
I am not familiar with the Raptor product, is that the truck bed liner raptor?
Yes it’s a very versatile bed liner product , has many you tube examples
Is it ok to use the blue Beamon brazing rods on leaking rivet’s on the bottom of the Jon boat before you start your Gator Base?
You'd probably do alot better getting a bucking bar and re buck your rivet
No, fix the rivet the right way first. Than put gator glide on.
Yup
