    Just came across this! I was one of the tall flag performers! The Olympic committee invited tall flag teams from high schools in Southern CA to try out for the team. My High School was the furthest south in San Diego. Mira Mesa High School. I was the only one from my HS to make the team, so car pooled up to LA every week for practice with awesome girls from Poway HS. The committee wouldn’t let us record the music to practice- had to be kept secret till the opening ceremonies. As all Tall Flag girls know, our flags mean a lot, so it was a big deal when they told us they were going to give them to country dignitaries. We were relieved when they told us we could keep them. I still have my flag and uniform. Still remember a few moves. Lol. After this performance we marched up the stairs and lined up at the top of the coliseum near the flame. We had to hold our flags up for what felt like 3 hours while all the countries marched in. We were the only performers to be asked to the closing ceremonies- which they didn’t decide till after the opening ceremonies. They had us line up around the stage to help be a barrier from the olympians jumping on stage. Lionel Ritchie performed. At one point Mary Lou Retton hid behind me to escape being photographed by other olympians. I’m 5’11”. She is very short. Also super nice! There was also a College band with College flag team that performed in opening ceremonies - Not to be confused with this performance. I’m so grateful and feel so blessed and honored to have been apart of this. It was a once in a life time opportunity! I think its awesome that the Olympic fanfare is still the theme song today! The committee also gave us commemorative medals. :). So fun to see this again- my parents taped it on Beta back in 84, so could never watch it again. Lol

    Remember first listening to this theme as a child back in 1984. I was at home watching the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on television. I was bedazzled by all the pastel colors and pageantry. Then came the music. John Williams was conducting his acclaimed piece at the Los Angeles Colisseum. As soon as I heard this energetic and pulsating theme, I became hooked as a longtime fan and proponent of the Olympic Games. Over the years, I have had opportunities to meet Olympic Hall of Famers/gold medalists (i.e. Sammy Lee, Rafer Johnson, Mark Spitz, John Nabor, Carl Lewis, Kim Rhode), held Olympic gold medals, held Olympic torches, visited an offical USA Olympic training center, speak before the Los Angeles City Council in support of the L.A. 2028 Olympic Games bid, and, meet the maestro himself, John Williams! The only thing left in my repertoire of things Olympic is to attend an actual Olympic Games, particularly the Opening Ceremony. Hope that happens one day in my lifetime! Sad that the Games aren't happening this year though, due to Covid-19. Still very optimistic and hopeful that they will happen next year in 2021!

    Every high school band in America wanted to play this during their halftime show in the fall of 1984, at best, most were only able to learn part of it. Attached is the full performance by the 1984 Pine Tree High School Marching Band "The Pride" from Longview, Texas under the direction of Dee Hood. It is amazing that this high school band of about 400 were able to learn and perform the piece from the time that it debuted at the 1984 opening ceremonies on July 28, 1984, giving this band roughly a little over a month to get it down. Not only did they get it down, they finished 2nd in the state of Texas at the state 5A marching contest (largest classification at the time). Also, it is amazing that the sound quality of this high school band is so good for 1984 VHS video and sound technology. I can tell you, they were amazing to listen to, especially the big brass, it just blew you away in person. th-cam.com/video/fzUjklJc42I/w-d-xo.html

      I don't know if that happened before in other cities ceremonies, maybe they considered in LA 84 that commentators are ok, because you know, US. But at least now there is only narrators with a very strict script. Maybe in tv commentators are ok for a tv channel, but in the stadium? It´s not a simple football game... It's a Olympic ceremony!

    To all the folks in the comments who speak of their desire to "go back" or "turn back the clock." I ask you, was America ever great during this time? or did it just seem that way on television? When I thought of the USA as a child it was often John Williams' olympic and nbc themes that played in my mind, but I know now that the world and history is much more complex and multifaceted than a simple nostalgic memory. Reagan was busy impoverishing millions and decimating the working class, the crack epidemic was killing thousands, and the prison industrial complex was expanding to systematically incarcerate millions for profit. all happening as they played fanfares at the stadium in La. This America you are nostalgic for never existed. We must accept this and hope to build a better tomorrow for all people. A sentiment i'm sure the great composer would agree with!

      Yeah, this is you putting the negative spin on a world that was getting better. Poverty was going down. The economy was gearing back up and industry was revitalizing. Race relations were getting better. The evil of Communism was dying and its grip on eastern Europe falling apart. The whole point is that this was the country that was building the better future, and the music reflects that reality.

    • @ASIDDEVIL12
      @ASIDDEVIL12 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @defenstrator4660 Indeed, things were getting better in many respects, but 40 years has brought us immense social progress, and we are better for it! My point is not to take away from your love of the media or the memory of that time. My point is that the world has become a much better place since and the 80s were not the perfect time or the peak of American society.

      The BPO at the time was said to have discipline problems-was it was common for orchestras to hiss during rehearsals for music they didn’t care for, supposedly some members continued to display their malcontent in other ways. Finally, supposedly during a rehearsal of “America: The Dream Goes On,” members were openly mocking it during rehearsals and talking over the music. JW supposedly left rehearsals angry and submitted his resignation the next day.
      The orchestra administration apologized profusely and did everything they could to get him to stay, which they did for another 10 or so years.
