Great work, another suggestion this track is interesting harmonically: from 7:38 Stored Memories and Monica's Theme from AI... also theme from Accidental tourist.
@@TB1M1 Thanks. I'm actually planning to do the entire A.I. score as a series once I've graduated uni (so in a few years). The cue you mention - "What is Your Wish?" is one of the most heart-achingly beautiful pieces Williams has written. It has amazing company in that final third of the film too. A.I. is probably my favourite Williams score! Accidental Tourist would be another beautiful one - hasn't had any attention on TH-cam so maybe I should take a look.
As a trumpet player, John william's music is amazingly satisfying to play. He understands brass instruments like few other composers do, and brings out the best each brass instrument is capable of.
I’m glad to hear you say that. He has a great understanding of the capabilities of the whole orchestra - a lot of his music is really tricky but it’s always right in the realm of satisfying playability.
It will be a missed opportunity if they don’t ask him to conduct it at the LA2028 opening ceremony, like he did in 1984. Really hoping they ask him to🤞🏽
He didn't conduct at the Hollywood Bowl this year and that's the first time in quite a long time he didn't, so I wouldn't hold my breath unfortunately.
i love the reduced score. i used to transcribe williams’ stuff by ear but i never would have been able to get the swirling pan-diatonic (or whatever it is) string section stuff
HAHA! Beat me to it. This piece has been sat in my draft folder since Tokyo and I couldn't be bothered to finish it, I guess now I don't have to. Loved the breakdown.
John Williams does so much amazing work. I wonder what your thoughts are on another Olympic fanfare Mr. Williams wrote, titled, "Summon The Heroes." He does some similar orchestration in both cues, for example, the triadic brass, and at 3:50, the sparkling runs of anticipation, except this time, in Summon The Heroes it's the woodwinds, not the strings, that get to play the fast runs. But my God, Mr. Williams is such a legendary composer. His NBC Nightly News Theme, and his Sunday Night Football Theme are two hidden gems in a sea of incredible music Mr. Williams has written throughout his life.
Summon the Heroes is a really interesting one - yes it uses some similar ideas, but I actually think it's much more adventurous/experimental than this one (for better or for worse). That being said, the main idea is the same, with the different parts of the piece representing different aspects of the games/the ceremony, though there's a bit more emotional depth in the 'race' section - I love the way the music emulates the athlete's pushing themselves to their limits with an atonal and chaotic passage. The original orchestration for Summon the Heroes was to have a double brass section - 4 trumpets and 4 trombones on stage and 4 trumpets and 4 trombones off stage (a combination which unfortunately wasn't replicated in any concert performances beyond it's initial premiere I believe). Personally, I prefer Olympic Fanfare and Theme, but Summon the Heroes is also amazing. There are a lot more thoughts to say - I promise that if I'm still making these videos in 4 years I'll definitely cover Summon the Heroes. I wonder if they'll ask Williams to write something for the LA games in 4 years. Personally, I think he's said everything he needs to say musically about the Olympics with this piece, Summon the Heroes, the Olympic Spirit and Call of the Champions. That being said, it'd still be worth it to get more amazing music! The NBC Nightly News Theme is also used for one of the most popular news channels here in Australia, and when I found out that it was actually a John Williams composition years ago my mind was blown. I'm trying to imagine how I would approach writing a theme for a news segment - Johnny manages to encapsulate the most perfect atmosphere in a way I can't quite describe. His ability to emulate the tone/atmosphere of complicated subjects like this is one of his best talents (among other things of course). "Wide Receiver" is also a classic - really iconic melodies.
I have to admit that I had tears listening and reading the score. I was surprised that I could still read a score, after 40 years+ of not playing any instrument (trombone for me).
Absolutely phenomenal as always! The level of detail and effort you put in these is inspiring. Would love to see some more Olympic Williams analyses like “Summon the Heroes” if you’re ever interested
I have been watching the Olympics since 1960, since Abebe Bikila won the men's marathon running barefoot through the streets of Rome. We have all seen hundreds of thrilling athletic moments over the years. However, None of that evoked the emotional response I still get from hearing this theme at the Closing Ceremonies of the 1984 Olympics when Williams' fanfare played and the majestic horses and riders who won medals in Individual Jumping entered the LA Coliseum. It was so beautiful, so unexpected, so stunning, and so magnificent that I gasped and cried then, imagining how those riders felt as the crowd figured out what was happening and 90,000 cheers rose from the stands. Just watched those moments again on TH-cam and cried again.
In the UK, this music was used to accompany a yearly tv event called Sports personality of the year and it was spine tingling as they profiled each nominee with this in the background. They don’t do it anymore and it’s worse off because of it.. 😢 Really hope this used as podium music for the medal ceremonies at LA28
I'd like to expand upon what you said at 0:20 under "A Military Band" in regard to the C trumpet. The use of the C trumpet in the American orchestra came from the French trumpet tradition migrating to Boston. Starting mostly after WWII, its profile especially raised when the Chicago Symphony mandated the use of C trumpet in its orchestra. When the CSO brass section became arguably one of the best brass sections in the country and their students started winning more orchestral positions, C trumpet pretty much became a requirement to be an orchestral player in the US.
Sad to not hear this in NBCs telecast of the 2024 Paris games. Just not the same. The secondary theme gets to me every time and the awesome triple tonguing by the brass. Just awesome.
I don’t recall any memorable music being used in the Aus coverage of the Olympics at all. Very surprised to hear it’s not being used this year in the US too.. very strange decision.
Like any good fanfare, this tune re-imagines what its like to have donosaurs participating in the Olympics; here comes the Brachiosaurus marching in....

Well, it was partially written for the NBC broadcast and has been used in its coverage of the olympics ever since - so it makes sense why there would be similarities!

There are two versions of the piece - one with the Arnaud bugle bit and one without. This one is the one without obviously, it was the only one I had the sheet music for, and is the one that is more often performed in concert.
@@patricksuiter I see, thanks for the explanation. Bugler's Dream (the classic part by Arnaud) has separate sheet music I seem to see online. I apologise - I should have been more clear. I meant this statement more in terms of Williams’ view on the subject. For example, in an interview about the Born on the Fourth of July score he talks about how he uses an ‘American Trumpet’ to represent Kovic’s youth - and he uses a C Trumpet in that score - so he seems to associate the C Trumpet with American life. Not sure whether he got that association from his time writing for the military in his earlier years or with the Boston Pops - as you can probably tell I’m neither American nor a trumpet player. I can definitely see how that comment could be interpreted as weird without justification - so I apologise! This video was fairly rushed, hence it’s a bit baffling that it’s doing so well. Yeah it's a nice idea, but he'll be 96 YEARS OLD. I'm not sure if he'll be able to perform at that age.
I reckon ask him to write a new fanfare now! A gift for eternity and among his late masterpieces???

Yes one of my favorite pieces that Williams has done outside his most famous movie scores. Love when he combines 2 themes together.
I love when he combines the Raiders March and Short Rounds Theme in Temple of Doom - it's really great stuff!
