Ping plotter testing jitter Spectrum ISP with information and how to read results and service call

  • UPDATE 11-20-22 : I ordered an IQrouter which basically auto-configured QOS to remove BufferBloat. I went from a D grade to A grade in tests at www.waveform.c... . While not completely removing jitter, it calmed down the spikes a bit.
    So my ISP, spectrum, kept cancelling my tickets on my jitter issue. The audio is part of my last call before they sent out a supervisor to check and test. The video is a real scan to a server I game at, to show that even though I have low "average latency" it is constantly jumping all over the place, otherwise known as jitter. Since I'm from a telecom and IT and software background, I have a little more knowledge than an average person. Here I use some of my knowledge to maybe help others determine where their issues may be. If you are having packet loss, or other internet issues that the ISP cannot resolve, this may be of some help.

    Currently dealing with this on xfinity, talked to their tech "Can I speak to someone who knows more or an IT specialist? " Sir, I am that person." "Oh, have a nice day then."

    This is 12/23 and i can totally sympathize with you. We’ve been going through the same garbage with spectrum for months. Only lately have i come upon the term bufferbloat which you address in your update. I’m about to try my own modem with Qos and Sqm settings. Thanks for your video

    CReePa--Graham, I went through same process to the “T”... all media replaced from modem- router- feed to node-and still no resolution after 7 visits.. I pay for a gig backbone to my house and 250mb is about the best they can do sustained.. been like this for 2 years!! Finally had there super provide CREDIT to my account for 3/4 of those 2 years and to follow up yearly if maintenance has no resolution .. which they have fixed squat to this point - COMCAST -> FTL.... demand the credit if they do not resolve timely.. I can’t wait for fiber in my neighborhood!!! Hope they work things out for ya !!

    I'm stuck in the same situation with our local ISP as well. It's been over 4 years of going back and forth with this. Same ping plotter tests (multiple high end pcs on 2 different modems with fresh windows 10 installs, plus a blank win 7 install with only pingplotter & vnc) showing the jitter spikes which is causing never ending lag in real-time competitive games and looping voice drops/quality goes to a robot voice in discord. And we're also an IT service hosting company with a 2nd modem/router for the business side with the same issues. Fully rebuilt my PC multiple times (mobo,cpu, ssds/nvmes, gpus, new dedicated NIC cards, re-terminated cat6 jacks, replaced cabling, brand new ubiquity pro switches, udm pro router, bought dedicated modem (mb8600 to avoid the puma 6 cpu issues in modems), ISP has replaced splitter, reterminated all coax cables inside on each visit, tested runs to tap and the modem signals are all within range. Both modems show no uncorrected packets and single digit corrected packets over at least a week of running without reboots. ISP replaced all equipment in the tap in our yard, replaced the main distribution block on the pole at the street, checked all neighboring taps and poles, followed line back to ISP, replaced a bad switch at ISP end, and although some other issues have been fixed from those steps like some intermittent packet loss, the MAIN jitter issue has never been resolved. We've had at least 4 tech visits in the last 6 months and many more over the last 4+ years of this issue persisting. I've always been patient with the techs, sent them any and all of my info/graphs when they requested it, and each time, they seem to change 1 thing, tell me about the thing they changed and say lets let it go for a few days and if you still have issues, call back. I understand that logic, but I relate to your pain all too well when you're venting there seems to not be a solution in there method of troubleshooting this issue other than the delegated fix of "we don't have this issue with fiber clients so you should be good once we upgrade to fiber to your area in X months/years." It does help somewhat to know I'm not unique in this situation and others are going through the same trouble which may lead to a "group" solution coming about. If anyone ever solves this, please share results. This seems to have caused many of us years worth of troubleshooting/replacing potentially good equipment out of desperation.

      I could have written this paragraph myself as it is exactly what I've been through. I did find this information out but have not had a chance to try to correct it with a better cable modem (costs money I just don't have right now) linustechtips.com/topic/736823-cable-modems-with-the-intel-puma-6-chipset-lag/
      It seems Modems with the intel PUMA 6 chipset can cause our issues and wouldn't you know it, every cable that spectrum has given me has this chipset

    • @prograhamslam
      @prograhamslam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I read everything you typed except I missed that you already tried the PUMA 6 fix with a new modem

      Also, what has helped me, but not fixed my issue, is I found out that when I have something streaming in the background (like hulu or netflix) it seems to tame some of the ping spikes and I feel less delay while online gaming. That has been an ongoing test as one week hulu works, the next hulu sucks and netflix work, the next a twitch stream works and netflix doesn't... try one or more things to see how it affects it. For me, it's instantly noticable. I can tell exactly when the stream stops and starts.

    I’m not sure why but I’ve always had good internet and ping but just recently started having problems and my ping has spiked up, I’m connected to Ethernet and usually get almost 0 to 25 ping when gaming and now at 40-60. I tried pingplotter and hop 1 and 3 are having problems and it’s not consistent but hop 1 sometimes has almost 100% pl and hop 3 average spikes up really high but pl only at like 3%, and my latency on the right side is always in the 900s. I ping tested my modem and router and they both came out good, so I’m assuming it’s a problem with isp. Great vid btw very helpful.

    Try to set the the Interval back to 2.5 seconds - sufficient. High "Package Loss" shouldn't be an issue anymore.

    • @prograhamslam
      @prograhamslam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The larger the interval, the larger the spikes were. I don't have a packet loss issue as much as a jitter issue. No consistency.

    You ever reach a solution for this? I've been having the same problem for over 2 years now and I have been getting the same run around as you, except about 12 tech visits over this time. I've opened an FCC complaint and they're still sending the same techs and resolving nothing. I have replaced every single connection point and device from the tap to my computer and it hasn't put a dent in it. So frustrating and it seems like no one who works at an ISP company has any idea what ping is or jitter which is just insane to me...
    Anyways the FCC complaint is coming up on 1 month and I think they need a response by then. Apparently some mystical engineers should come out this time which I've heard on 5 separate occasions but nothing ever comes of it. This is with Cox by the way.

    • @prograhamslam
      @prograhamslam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No they never resolved it. I have since ordered a business class service with it's own router and more bandwidth. Same issues - JITTER. Also, if you are trying to game and notice the issue, what actually helped me was to have something streaming in the background. If they have large buffers, the extra bandwidth usage seemed to have helped push the data out of the buffers faster. It feels more delayed when I only game, versus having a youtube or twitch video playing in the background from another pc.

    same issue. but I get 50-100% packet loss and ping goes up to 3,000 on wifi. Can't fix it ISP says nothing wrong. They sent out people and sent us 2 new modems but nothing fixes it. I gave up and haven't played online in 2 months. I have a 3090 and can't use it for online gaming. Windstream. The last tech said nothing was wrong with the internet, I showed him my ping plotter. I even showed a game and the ping kept jumping to 3000. He told isp that nothing was wrong and tried to charge us for a service visit.

      Do you have these issues when testing with a wired connection? Do you have an all in one modem/router or a separate router that you can bypass to test?

    • @blacksmoke37
      @blacksmoke37 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@prograhamslam I have a 3% packet loss that is not noticeable in game on wired connection. This is only a wifi problem that we cant fix. I tried with only one device connected, I tried turning the modem radio off and the router plugged in, I tried just the modems wifi, I tried multiple channels. Techs changed the cords and they say nothing is wrong. The problem is on every device connected to wifi. I even tried to disconnect every google/smartcast device in the house. I tried a static/dynamic dns server and a static IP. I tried 3 modems with different routers. Nothing works. When I do a speed test, it shows low ping but when I put any online game on nomatter the server, it spikes to 500-3300.

    currently dealing with almost the exact same issue with Spectrum and they seen the packet loss and told me it's not that bad I have tons of high tech equipment and my ping goes from 20 to 350 and everyone on the road I live on has the same issue I am curious on what caused yours because I have singled out and pinged their head end connector and all the problems are on their server but yet they seem to be afraid to talk to me because they know I am right.

    • @prograhamslam
      @prograhamslam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They never did resolve it. It has been slowly getting worse, and they have been building new houses in this area and all tapping in....coincidence? My opinion is that they have too much traffic into their outdated copper facilities, so they try to configure their equipment to handle it, which most likely causes these issues.

      I wish I had more knowledge to fix these issues, but all i can suggest is do all the basics like replace things (new cables, test a different computer) and when you exhaust that, see if the ISP will help.

    Did you ever get this resolved? If so, how?

    • @prograhamslam
      @prograhamslam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't get it resolved, I got the run around and no answers so I filed an FCC complaint. They acted upon that to come out and "test" and claimed they only had around 9 jitter and ping spikes of ONLY 90ms at the pole (mind you to something that can attain 8ms) , not the 180ms spikes I registered, which since it wasn't as bad as I tested, then there is no issue and it's my usage so I should upgrade to their highest offering. They said the ping spikes and jitter that they did register were due to security issues??? They have prioritization on the line which actually answers that for me, and the answer is that they are prioritizing packets causing weird delays in online gaming and it took a lot of back and forth to get that information out of them. Probably because it used to be illegal for the ISP to have packet prioritization under Network Neutrality...
