I had a similar experience, but worse. I was told to take a 1 hour plane to another city where the hq is located. I worked my ass off till 2 a.m. after a very busy day, then went to bed and woke up at 4:30 a.m to catch the cheapest flight that the company selected, flew there, landed at 8, waited till 10 for the meeting to start, 14 more colleagues were there, at 10:13 the meeting started, and at 10:15 the new country manager said "you are all fired". At 11:45 a terrible headache started, at 12:00 my blood pressure increased and kept on increasing, my heart rate was 118 at rest, and I asked for a doctor and a manager took me to the nearest ER. Let that be the worst day in my life, I though I was gonna die and never see my son again... I think people are interchanging "fired" and "laid off" which are two different events. To be fired is a pretty serious event meaning you did something wrong. Laid off simply means the company downsized and you no longer had a position. I suppose the end result is the same that you don't have a job but laid off generally has some incentives and on top of that lets you get unemployment benefits since some states don't give it to you if you're "fired" from your job.
We normally just fire people. If habe never laid off anyone because if they were doing great they would of made the company more money they they took out of the company. Uh, companies can say you're fired to block unemployment even when you've done nothing wrong. They do it ALL the time. Why? Because they have to pay into an unemployment tax and a lot of companies think that they only pay it IF they have someone with an active unemployment claim... which is utterly false. In a lot of states (Employement at will states) companies can and do just let employees go with NO reason. Moral of the story: If you get fired, laid off or "let go" from a company. ALWAYS file an unemployment claim. Make sure you get an interview with the person at the unemployment office working your case. There is a GOOD chance you'll end up unemployment benefits. If it's denied the first time, appeal it. Unemployment people typically know how shady and horrible companies are to employees.
