I just want to say a big Thank You for showing the world what America, and Americans, truly are. Just hard-working people trying to live their lives in a beautiful and wonderful country that America truly is, and not the ugly view that the media portrays our country and people to be. I am truly enjoying your travels and videos. Again, thank you.
It's sad that you feel lonely sometimes in your social life, but remember that a big community is watching your videos and you are a true friend to us. Sometimes i feel like i'm travelling with you on this journey and your videos are joyful to watch on a quiet evening after a full day. Your words and feelings never fall short and you seem to show us that happiness is much more than the stereotypes we all used to know. Also, the mountain top view was badass.

Hey Eva, as a touring musician of many years, here are a few motel hacks for you: use the coat hanger with clips on it (for hanging pants) to close your curtains even tighter, letting ZERO light in. This works for privacy and a better sleep, too. Just turn the coat hanger sideways and clip the two curtains to each other with the clips and-voila! Blackout curtains. Also, a great hiding space for valuables (passport etc) is in the closet ironing board. Slip your valuables between the ironing board cover and the board itself-no theif EVER thinks to look there. Cheers-and be safe out there! ❤️

You said “you could spend a lifetime road tripping the US and never experience all of it”, this is so true. As a truck driver for 12 years, it’s my job to road trip the country, and from experience you never will experience it all. I’ve been in the desert at night and stargazed when it’s beautiful, and I’ve been in the dessert when it’s 130 degrees F in th le shade and been miserable. The Rockies in the winter are gorgeous. Especially during sunrise in the bitter cold where the moisture in the air is like fine glitter as ice and looks like the sky is completely on fire across the entire horizon. You are in beautiful country. I would suggest seeing some indigenous tribal art in the different regions.

I absolutely love what you said about America and its wildernesses! I have to fully agree, I am from Germany and moved to the US in 2009. I can still never get enough of the wide and neverending wild of this country! It's just so freaking beautiful. You really need to see the Eastern Sierra mountains. They are my absolute favorite place on Earth! I call them my personal paradise!!!
I'm a born and raised Oregonian who now lives in California. Your final shot of Mt. Hood over the rocky ridgeline took my breath away and choked me up! I do so miss the green. Your risk was well worth that view indeed! So glad you enjoy this aspect of America... far away from the big cities.

"Caught in your own reality and it feels like fiction " this is an amazing thought. I also have felt like this many times in my life.
dog trainer here again. You're doing such a great job! He saw something scary and you 1) acknowledged it but 2) didn't act scared yourself 3) patiently let him find out for himself that it was ok, supporting but not forcing him because conquering fears can ultimately only come from within, while 4) counter conditioning with added treats. You're a freakin natural. This natural, respectful, both-sided trust-based bond is worth more than any sit or down or whatever, because everything else will come so much easier on that good foundation.
Also your car restraint system has improved (I think?), yay!
On to some unsolicited advice if I may:
while greeting people is all fun and games when they're little, I hiiiighly suggest not letting "see a person = happy jumpy petting time!!" to become the norm. Goofy happy greetings are fine when invited, but also practice walking past distractions. Like just.. walking past a tossed toy, or a bone, or moving on from seeing a bird or a rat or a bunny or whatever. Reward whenever he is able to move on with you. Then label those things so he knows when he can have them.. like "say hi!" or "get it"(the toy) or "look birds" (but not chase). This is not to lord over him and micro manage his joy. It's because he has no way of knowing when a person is okay to approach and when not- the humans can communicate that with each other, but he has no idea about that, and that leads to confusion and frustration. If you search for "kikopup polite greeting" on youtube you'll find a world renowned dog trainer teach an intentional and well mannered greeting ritual, AND, GET THIS, you don't even need a person to practice this initially, you can practice it with yourself to build up the pattern.
Enjoy and take lots of photos because there is. no. such. thing. as too many puppy photos.
the car restraint is not great. She should use a harness to tie him. If there is a sudden breaking situation or accident, the collar could seriously hurt the dog

Rain in an old growth Pine forest is one of the most calming and beautiful sounds I've experienced. I stood still in it and silent, and felt like a piece of it, of all the growing living things around me. It was a moment of realizing a shift in perspective, and that's stuck with me.
When I get caught up in the ideas of values and the importance of the mundane lives we tend to create for ourselves, I try to remember to think back on that moment, to understand what it means to be part of something removed from all of that, something closer to what I actually am. Apply any label or identity or classification you'd like, when it comes down to it, I'm just a being aware enough to experience and contemplate my own existence in the ecosystem of a living planet, to witness that through any perspective I choose to develop, and that can be a wonderful and intimidating thing.
I think enjoying the rain or not, like all things we humans value/judge/have an opinion on, is a matter of perspective, born of what we've been taught and how we've interpreted our previous experiences. And I think one of the great things about being human is that, in experiencing and considering a variety of ideas, we have the ability to reshape our perspectives, that we can choose to do so, or not. I think that is a uniquely human trait, as far as I'm aware. And I think it's a worthy one.
In any case, this abstract rambling has gone on much longer than I intended. I just wanted to say the rain's not all that bad, it doesn't have to be a downer or a trial to get through, and that morning mountain view was awesome to behold. Safe driving, Eva. And Enjoy the day.
This one may have been one of my favorites, Eva. Having grown up in a small town, I share your love for them. I’m glad you and Vilk are bonding well. And don’t worry about the rain. You’re in Oregon. The rain pretty much follows everybody. ☔️

He smelled other dogs who marked on the hydrant but he didn’t see any dogs so it was freaking him out. He’s so cute. 46 years ago I flew from Copenhagen to NY to meet up with my then girlfriend who had bought a used car in wich we during the summer of 1976 criss-crossed the USA covering 39 states and some Canadian too. I also found the American nature the most diverse and stunningly beautiful I had then - and even since - seen.

They are not. Most places are small towns. Very different from big cities.

I'm glad you posted this video. I've been discussing with my 10 year old the feeling if safety when going off the beaten path. She's into these kind of videos already, which is really cool but at the same time she doesn't get that this kind of travel has its risks. She's sees young people in the social media doing this and it looks perfect and fun. She doesn't see the negative of going remote.
I solo travel but feel a little weird about crown land camping. As a female, it really puts me out there. What if I did park where there was a creep, or if I needed assistance quickly? Also, it's so weird if I'm at a spot and someone else pulls up beside me or if I drive miles in and some one is already there. It doesn't feel right to set camp beside them. I don't want to feel vulnerable but in these cases, I really do. I don't know, I'm always torn about how I feel about it. I'm sure others feel the same.

I took that risk in 2014 when I left Texas and lived on the road for two years with my dog. Didn't know anyone or have any idea how it would end up. When I saw Mount Hood I knew I was home, haven't left this area since. Best risk i ever took.
Beyond this adventure; the bond you are building with your pup is incredible. God bless and protect you both.

13:05 was so cute. When that loud thunder hit the puppy automatically looked at you to see your reaction. Puppy was trying to figure out if he should be afraid of the noise or not. Another great video!
Your videos help me to see my own country in a whole different perspective. I know it's a great place, but it's easy to take it for granted when you see it everyday.
Just some food for thought. I might reassess parking on top of a hill and getting on top of my truck during a thunderstorm. It could be very enlightening.
You might want to rough it and sleep inside the truck.
But that's just me.

I'm glad you're safe. Thunder can't hurt you. Lightning can! Is a rooftop tent safe in a thunderstorm? Odyssey's metal skin would protect you from a lightning strike, but I'm unfamiliar with the tent's construction. Be safe out there!
I don't think being on top of your Truck is a good Idea in a Thunderstorm.. Best place would be inside your truck.
No, tents are NOT safe in lightning storms. Rooftop or otherwise.
Especially when that metal ladder is touching the ground. Being in the truck would be safe if the metal ladder doesn’t touch the ground. The rubber tires insulates the vehicle from a lightning strike.
I think she was close enough to trees that the lightning would've more likely struck them instead. It would've been safer inside the vehicle though. Sleeping on top in an open field would be a very bad idea.

The fact that Vilk is unfazed by the thunder is a huge positive. Absolutely loving the N. Our large championship-bred German Shepard was afraid of thunder and every time it would thunder he would run up the stairs to the 2cnd floor and crawl under a bed.

Sometimes we take risks and don't even know why. Why don't we take the sure and safe route like everyone else? Because they all have the same stories. Some of us want different stories.
You have amazing stories and they are why I love your channel so much. My travels around the world have taken me to places I never thought I'd ever see in person, yet the best ones were the ones that took me to places I never knew existed. Were the risks worth it? Always.
Eva, this video made me laugh, especially the part about "good fire hydrant!" What a beautiful place! My wife and I noticed that it rained almost everywhere we went to camp.
I think that during a thunderstorm the best place to be would be in Odessy because if lightning hits it you will be safe as long as you are not touching the metal of the vehicle. If Odessy is hit and you are in the rooftop tent the electricity might jump onto the structure of the tent. Just a thought.
One last thing, I think you must be America's girlfriend! You release a video and in minutes you have more views than a lot of other websites get in years! Have joy!
Be EXTREMELY careful with your vehicle in Portland!!! NEVER leave anything unlocked. Vehicle theft is really bad in Portland.
You are leas likely to have a problem in Portland than any city similar size or larger.
Yup, be sure to park in a “secure” location in the city. Still digging its way out of s tough couple years. But the city also has great friendly wonderful people too.
I envy and laude your decision to go it on your own. The courage to take on such an immense journey, the challenges that you face on the way, the excitement that coarse through you as your achieve your goals, however small or big it may be, will be priceless memories that your can call your own.
From a British friend “You Americans don’t realize how great it is to have so many state and national parks. Most of the UK and Europe are smoothed over. Even the wild areas are neatly groomed and safe. There are still things in American parks that can kill you. So you have to be looking. And by looking, you see things that you might have missed.” I have to agree with him.
I live in Oregon, have hiked with such views of Mt Hood (last shot in video.) Yes, we are truly blessed to have the eco diversity we do here and the many parks and wilderness areas that protect it. Within a day’s drive of Mt Hood one can explore a coastal beach, a rain forest, glaciers, high deserts, active volcanoes, spectacular forest with high waterfalls, one of the world’s great rivers. I hope I never take it for granted.
I used to live in Boulder, Colorado and there were mountain lions that would kill and eat joggers on running paths up Boulder Canyon less than a hundred yards from the city limits.

I’m wondering how she’s going to get him up the ladder as he gets bigger. If he’s done teething, the vehicle itself would be fine… but sleeping separately? I loved sleeping with my Rottweiler, even though he took up over half of the queen and left me with less than a twin! 132 lbs, he was. Both of my Rotties preferred sleeping with some distance in between. I would’ve loved to share the same pillow, but think our heads put out too much heat and carbon dioxide. It’s true that once asleep, you both want space and fresh air! Kinda funny are our preferences when falling asleep… even though it’s a small slice of the several hours unconscious.
Getting him, I’m confident, will be one of the best decisions she’ll ever make. The first two years are sacred, even though at times the energy level can test your sanity. He’s very fortunate to have an owner and companion who explores the world and gets varying types of exposure. It’s certainly a great breed for her lifestyle. ✌🏻🇺🇸

I live in a small town in the southern part of the US. I do agree, the US is very diverse but the small towns and countryside are my favorite
Your videos are so personal and heartwarming. But this one was a microcosm of your entire trip, enjoying the small town, the long drive, not knowing if the campsite would be available or if it was, if it was worth staying at, then the rain, the satisfaction of a little food at the end of the long day. Then...the next morning, and the mountain...that was sublime!
I think your dog might’ve been barking at the scent of another dog on that hydrant rather than being afraid of it! You’re doing a great job with him and boy is he gonna be big!

You are so correct Eva, going to the small towns throughout the U.S. is the "real" America. To all other foreigners going to New York or LA is NOT experiencing America. Be brave and explore.
Agree 100% I moved to the US a couple of years ago and I've been to those 2 cities you mentioned and no, there is nothing like rural Colorado, Wyoming or New Mexico and so many other places here, that's where the real magic of this awesome country is my friends

How are the big cities not the “real” America. They are part of America and the tens of millions that live in NYC and LA also define America.
Have to disagree, the beauty of America is in the variety! There are as many authentic experiences to be had in big cities as in small towns.
NYC and L.A. are far more "real" than some dink town in Idaho where barely 200 people live

The crazy thing is Eva, those people in that bar around the 5:00 mark, would probably have loved to hear your story of your adventure, Americans love the idea of a road trip. Try to push yourself on this trip, further than your comfortable boundary of speaking to us. Even if you don't film it, the memories you make are key to your enjoyment of the trip and if as a by-product it boosts your confidence to speak to people, then thats even better. As a Utah native, I really felt this way when I traveled to the UK. As I made my way through England, Wales and the lowlands of Scotland, any time I would open my mouth people would immediately notice I wasn't from around there. After which they were always friendly and curious where I'm from, what my story was.. It encouraged me to open up and keep having those pleasant interactions.

There's something you should know if you don't already, especially soloing like this. Be aware of dead standers. Dead standers are trees that are completely dead but still standing. Why these trees matter is if you're setting up camp near one of these dead standers, you run the risk of the thing falling on you and your camp, increasingly so if there is a storm about because of wind and rain. At the 13:01-13:13 mark there are two (maybe even a third) that looks to be dead standing from both sides of your tent. This is a documented occurrence, be careful out there!

I have to wonder why you're getting in your roof top tent in a thunderstorm instead of the big safe metal box that is your truck. We are taught that if we're ever caught in a thunderstorm, to shelter in our vehicles with the windows up as the metal frame and rubber tires would protect us if the vehicle was struck by lightning. Whereas a canvas tent would do nothing in the way of protection, and if you have no shelter at all, you want to be as low to the ground as possible. Getting in to your rooftop tent pretty much goes against everything we've been taught and seems pretty dangerous.
Agree. A rooftop tent will not protect you from a severe storm with lightning all around. Better to stay inside Odessy.
Rooftop tent sounds really bad idea during any windy night near trees....
Great advice! Did not know about the rubber tires being great protection...never crossed my mind. Luckily nothing happened to Eva this time around and that she reads this comment for her future escapades in a thunderstorm!
Agree about that rooftop is unsafe. But rubber tires are doing nothing to insulate when flash hits car. Cars body works as Faraday cage, and that could save you.

Vilk is so adorable. I think you are doing a great job training him. Also a dog.......will ALWAYS stay by your side and never leave. They are always happy to just be with you no matter where that is. Farmers have a history of paying scientists to produce rain (sometimes successfully) through various means of cloud seeding.
@@Deriv801 conspiracy theorists be damned… I’m down for cloud seeding if it means rain! The issue is in the West, we need clouds to seed first. Most of the time during summer, it’s just sunny blue skies here. I get soo incredibly sick of “nice weather.”

Eva, when you drive through a coffee drive through you may ask for "pup-cup" or a "pup-pucino". Our dogs get one whenever they had to endure the vet! My wife tells me she picks then up a Starbucks or Chick-File for free with a drink for her own.

i grew up there and loved hiking. so many great trails and you always ended with an amazing view. i also live in the Houston area and hiking is not my thing here 😂

I have to say as a Man growing up here in America I’ve never even done what your doing. Most people in this country have not. You are so brave and amazing it’s truly mind blowing. Love how you immediately tackled the hydrant. That’s exactly how to tackle all his fears so young. He now trusts you like his Mom and soon when he is big he will protect you with his life. Barking is a warning and he wasn’t actually scared at all. He was warning you of possible danger which is a pack animal trait. But you being the pack leader so far helped him know it was okay. Keep doing that but never scold him for barking. They only bark to warn you of present danger. You will need that in the woods :)

Unless you have a dog with Separation Anxiety/Compulsive Barking. German Shepards are one of the top-of-the-list dogs known for barking (I've owned two), if they are trained and loved you should be OK. We had one German Shepard that was super aggressive and nothing worked, we gave her to people who had a farm and they had her as an outside dog, we lost touch with the new owners and don't know what became of her. ;-)
@@WeAreWhiteLight yeah, that is all true enough. Shepherds can be high strung, depending on bloodline and other factors.They often require the help of a professional trainer. But they are amongst the smartest and most loyal breed. I have learned not to ever approach someone that is walking a German Shepherd. Of all breeds, the German Shepherd is most likely to have a blood line that involves police or military background. That is not to say all are volatile, a reputable breeder will know the animals backgrounds and lineage, and a good training can can train them regardless lineage.Bummer about your pup, but you probably did the right thing, an undisciplined Shepherd can be dangerous… but they could also be the best friend you have ever had…I wish the young British lady good luck in her endeavors, including that beautiful pup…top tip…” a good dog is a tired dog”
