  • For quite a while now I've been looking for a better wireless audio setup when making science and photography videos - I may have found it in the DJI Mic. I bought the DJI Mic and in this video we'll go over three things I love about this new microphone system, and three things I think could be improved. Give it a watch and let me know in the comments if you have any questions for a follow-up video!
    For those wondering, here's the cheap Lav mic being used in this video (not an affiliate link): www.amazon.com...

    I recently bought a Rode wireless GO II and it immediately began having issues, the biggest one being the receiver was not powering off. I returned it the following day and purchased the DJI mic and I have not regretted one bit. DJI made a really amazing product (slight room for improvement as shown in this video) but I’m more than happy with it. Highly recommend to anyone on the fence.

    Here's an update for you Austin! On Wednesday January 4th, 2023 DJI released new firmware version 02.00.72.87 for the DJI Mic. Here are the new features and notes.
    1. Added auto power off feature for receiver. The receiver will power off automatically if disconnected from transmitter for more than 30 minutes.
    2. Added LED off option for transmitter. Go to TX Settings > LED Brightness > Off to turn off the transmitter LED and reduce the light affect during recording.
    3. Fixed issue: transmitter audio data was occasionally lost when recording for a long time.
    Notes: When the firmware is updated, the settings of DJI Mic will be restored to default. If the firmware fails to update, restart the transmitter and receiver and try again. Contact DJI Support if the firmware update fails again.

    Even though replacement parts aren't listed, they can be purchased directly from DJI support.
    As for the zippered pouch, the pre-production units did come with them and that zippered pouch was designed initially to be the storage bag however from user feedback, more actually preferred the drawstring pouch as the entire case can fit into in it along with the soft parts (wires, dead cats, etc...) They wanted a simple pouch that could hold everything instead of a separate small pouch for the wires and the case would then need to stored separatly. So in the end, we decided to go with one large drawstring pouch with a divider to hold the case on one side and all the soft parts on the other.
    The yellowish paper for the instruction pamphlets were specially chosen to provide a more premium appearance rather than an off white or even pure white paper.

    • @AustinGreeneExplores
      @AustinGreeneExplores  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can't tell if this is a joke, or a sincere reply, so I'll assume the latter. I suppose I am firmly in the group that would prefer a zippered pouch as I've already had small items like the dead-cats fall out of the drawstring bag as it bounces around in my backpack. Personally, I don't see any argument for yellowed paper being more "premium". Yellowing instruction manuals are pretty synonymous with old items that have been sitting on a shelf or improperly stored. Neither of those are the case here, of course, but I just don't get the "premium" concept. Use a heavyweight paper, not a discolored one, maybe?
      Either way, an excellent product overall, and if you helped at all in making it I applaud you!

    The one thing that would be a HUGE improvement is for the lav mic to actually screw onto the transmitter.
    Countless times I’ve moved just enough to get a crackling noise or a missed word or two. Depending on what what you’re recording you don’t always have an opportunity to try again.

    Thank you for your great insight. Much Appreciated! Question: what happen when battery in receiver needs replacing? The usual answer I hear is, send them back to manufacturer for service replacement. The problem with that is you are out sometime for months before you get them back and the cost of shipping sometime almost equal the price if a new unit. reason why I tend to stay away from rechargeable batteries at this end.

    Firstly, this is a quality review - thank you!!!
    As a golf TH-cam reviewer and vlogger my question maybe something you can’t answer, but here we go….
    I will be filming a lot of 4 person vlogs on the channel. So, if I bought two of these systems, could I record directly into the camera with a splitter cable without the frequencies clashing, or pull you say it’s safer to record everything internally into the DJI receiver and then edit and sync in post?
    I’ve yet to find a system affordable that can do 4 person audio into one receiver

      Thanks for subscribing and for the kind words. I would always advocate for internal recording all the time, it really doesn't hurt battery life in a big way. I have the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 gimbal and I bought it with the combo pack. The combo pack adds a semi-hard case and an extension that can be turned into a tripod. But the annoying thing is that tripod leg/extension thing does not fit into the case that it comes with. I am sure now, they don't care about cases. Because that pouch would not be useful in many situations.

  • @robbryan3044
    @robbryan3044 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'll be purchasing one of these. But, before I do, I have a question that (at least, as far as I'm aware) no TH-camrs have covered...and, since you mentioned using it with a GoPro, as well as having mentioned the Media Mod, I'm guessing (and hoping) your have the 'correct' answer.
    I have a GoPro 8 Black, which, if my memory is serving me correctly (I don't have it with me right now (the GoPro, not the 'memory'...tho, I sometimes question that...lol), has a USB-C port. My original plan (for recording external audio directly to the video) was to order the DJI MIC, and the GoPro Media Mod for GoPro 8 (ie. plugging the DJI MIC into the Media Mod via the 3.5mm connecting cable). This is because I'm unaware as to whether, or not, external audio can "enter" the video via the USB-C port. So, here's my question:
    If using the DJI MIC to record external audio, and adding that audio directly to the video recorded by the GoPro 8 Black, does the Media Mod NEED to be used (ie. external audio being added to the GoPro's recorded video MUST 'enter' the GoPro via the Media Mod's 3.5mm audio jack)...or, can the external audio be added to the GoPro's recorded video by plugging the DJI MIC directly into the GoPro 8 Black using the USB-C adapter?

    It is disappointing the cold shoe adaptor is not made of aluminium / metal considering the difficulty removing it from the receiver according to some reviews. I have not had a chance to test the DJI Microphone since receiving it earlier this week.

      That might have been it, but I really think it was something in their supply chain. Not sure what, but months of delay isn't an inventory problem usually, it's more like a chip you need being completely unavailable.

    very informative vid, thanks for the honest feedback. Was also rather worried about the coldshoe adapter on this one. I was about to grab this. Have you tried it with different lavs? Heard that there are some compatibility issues with some lavs which will result in interference in the recording.

      Thanks, glad it was helpful! I've tried it with my MOVO shotgun mic and my cheap $9 lav, both of which worked just fine for me. I have seen that the RODE lav does not work well. Some folks blame the DJI, but I think this setup might be putting out a stronger signal that other systems and really showing what lav's don't have adequate shielding.

    Very informative and honest review! Thank you! I frequently shoot videos of up to and over one hour in length. I heard another reviewer say that with long videos he has been having problems with the on-board recorded audio being quite a bit out of sync with the video. Have you encountered this problem? The ability to record audio to the internal drive would be the primary reason for me to buy this rig because I need something with built-in drop-out protection. Thanks again.

    • @AustinGreeneExplores
      @AustinGreeneExplores  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't done any really long clips, but I haven't seen that problem in other review videos. Personally I rarely use the receiver and normally just record internally to a transmitter and sync in post based on waveform. The only thing I've noticed is that it will, seamlessly, split large recordings into multiple files with each being about 30 mins or so of continuous audio. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for the video, quick question. You mentioned that you can record to the safety track without using the receiver. Is that correct. If so would that be at negative 6 db considering that the default is 0. Also are you still using them. Have they stood the test of time and did the hotshoe clip break in the end. Thanks and sorry for the novel 😂

    • @AustinGreeneExplores
      @AustinGreeneExplores  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Darryl, sorry for the late reply! I am still using them. I moved after finishing my degree and haven't had quite as much time for making videos. I still use these and they have held up well, but I don't make a habit of using the hot shoe connector just out of abundant caution. When I get to make more videos, these will be my go-to!

    The vast majority of "sponsored reviews" should simply be called ads. Have you had issues with losing connection when turning your back to the receiver? I also heard lavs with screw on connections do not work.

    • @AustinGreeneExplores
      @AustinGreeneExplores  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, there is a point where sponsored reviews really do not pass the test of being independent. I haven't had any issues with losing connection, but I am rarely more than 50 ft from the receiver. I'm not sure about screw-on lavs, I imagine some might work if the screw collar can slide up, but rigid ones probably wouldn't. I wish I could afford those to try!
