    As someone who does both on body and off body carry I can say it really depends on what you are carrying it in. I have some tactical bags that give me instant access to my firearm. I also realize that carrying off body is much slower of a draw, so that is why I make sure I am aware of my surroundings. If I feel something is not right I put my hand in the pocket the gun is in so I can access it immediately if I need to. This is something that should be mentioned also.

    You forgot one.... the brain fart. You carry the gun in your purse and you're with a group and you're kind of in a hurry and you leave the purse in a restaurant with the gun in it. Now granted you may discover that fact by the time you get to your car and don't have your keys, but you left a loaded gun in your purse unattended out of your control. Bad. Very bad. Never carry off body. Never.

      It's not complete bullshit. I will admit many scenarios can be conceived of in a slanted manner but, there are people absent minded enough to leave their pistol unattended. Heck, people have left their babies on top of cars and driven off before. Some people off body concealed carry in a non intelligent way.

    A purse snatcher is going to run around the corner or into an alley before he rifles your bag; you are probably safe, but his next victim isn't.
    But I completely agree with your basic premise. I often carry a camera bag that actually has a quick access concealed carry pocket; I keep a notepad and the camera's instruction manual in it.

      The new growing trend is to work in pairs now, one person olds the gun on you while the other picks your pockets ie purse etc. they grab your valuables and run.

  • @Commanderhurtz1
    @Commanderhurtz1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The biggest point I think people should think about, almost all attacks are going to be that of ambush. If someone grabs the purse from you before you can even react, you'll have no time to reach for said bag (or it might not be there anymore), and you've been jacked over. Good video!

    • @VanishingNomad
      @VanishingNomad 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the attacker. For the defender, that has all the same problems as drawing the gun. The only slight advantage is that the knife is dangerous in multiple directions, where the gun is dangerous only in one.

    • @Cab0408
      @Cab0408 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VanishingNomad My thinking is that the knife will be easier to get to while clipped to the waistband or on a neck chain. Especially in this situation, before your attacker has closed the distance. If you are caught off guard and are fighting in clinch range, drawing any weapon is a tricky proposition at that point.

    • @geaugafirearmsacademy
      @geaugafirearmsacademy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael C. A knife is a huge advantage over a gun at close distances.

    • @VanishingNomad
      @VanishingNomad 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael C. ,
      In my Silat classes, from back years ago, I learned that the knife has some advantages in a situation like this, for the reasons you mention "Slightly faster draw", and also what I mentioned, in that it is a threat in multiple directions, whereas a gun is only dangerous in one direction.
      The thing is, if you are being charged full throttle you have a draw and reaction time issue, that negates a LOT of the knives effectiveness, just as it does the gun. You simply can't properly deploy it under that kind of pressure.
      It gets even worse under realistic conditions where there is no warning (In the video above, he announces when he starts his run). Once some one is on you, they control your actions, and the knife is neutralized. Preventing them getting this control is where your hand to hand skills come in.
      The way we were taught, knife fighting IS hand to hand. All the same footwork, positioning and control are implemented. If someone is full on charging you, you can deal with it much faster and more reliably, in empty hand combat first. When you have taken the advantage away, cost them thier balance, taken position, and have forced them into a position where they have to recover, to continue the attack THAT is your window to draw the weapon.
      When you draw your weapon, you drop your defenses, and expose yourself to the attack. You can't do it too early. You have to trip them up and wait untill the opportune moment. When they are too busy with thier own balance to stop you, THEN you draw..

    Great info! I showed this to my Mother and now she carries her Ruger LCR .357 Magnum with Crimson Trace laser grip in an inside waist band holster on her strong arm side instead of her purse. (Even though I did buy her a VERY nice tactical concealed carry purse that it was VERY easy for her to draw her firearm from.) Great video guys and gals! Helped me convince her in no time flat. Plus I feel MUCH BETTER about her carrying her firearm. You know they call her Annie Oakley down at our local range? Lol! 😂 You've seen the movie "A Christmas Story"? You know how they tell the boy he can't have a Red Ryder BB Gun because he'll "Shoot his eye out!"? Well, she WILL shoot your eye out! And at the last distance line on the range! I believe it is 15 yards or 45 feet. I sure DON'T hate it for the baddie who tries to rob her! Lol! 😂 Thanks again guys and gals! Can't wait to watch some more of your videos! Peace! 😆🐶

      I can understand that in a perfect situation a purse carry would work. People can argue they are situationally aware all of the time, but this is the real world and all we can do is try our best.
      The argument against is that if they take your purse and you are carrying on body, who cares? My life is worth more. If they rip it off of you, now you are unarmed and just gave a gun to a criminal. If someone knocked me over and wants to harm me not just take my bag, I could still access my pistol on body.
      Thanks for watching

      Look up the 2 year old shoots mom in the head in Idaho Walmart. The husband can't understand why people are giving him grief for letting her wife carry in the purse. His response was (paraphrasing - I bought the purse for here it was meant for conceal carry had a special pouch and everything its not like it was an everyday purse.) Its kind of like the every year you hear a kid falls into zoo exhibit. you have 3 kids with you under 5 and one parent surprised that one got away for a few seconds, unless you have help like a friend or relative or babysitter to come with you or super disciplined kids. Don't take your 3 kids of your 4 kids under 5 to the zoo when your gangster husband whose been in jail so many times they don't know if hes coming or going and your so obese you cant jog to even catch them if they got away from you and then you yell and scream and get the gorilla upset they have to shoot him. who saw that coming??? and she works in children's education can you believe that

    A pocket-holstered Ruger LCP fits perfectly in the "ash tray" of my Silverado pickup truck. I can get to it faster than most on-body holsters when I'm driving.
    Having said that, cross-draw or a shoulder holster do work for me when driving a lot.

    I just found your channel and am enjoying your instructional videos. I agree, that if someone is going to carry a gun in a bag the way you exampled it in this video, yes, they would be a moron. I have a holster specifically made to fit onto its own compartment accessed by a rear zipper in the bags I use to carry.
    Cross-body bags are the only acceptable option. I move the holster from bag to bag. It's a rear compartment that I can leave open and no one can see. I can walk down the street with my hand literally on the handle of my gun and there's no way for anyone to know.
    When it's 20 degrees outside and I'm wearing a coat that reaches my ankles with three layers of clothes under that, I think my hand on my gun in the compartment is a better option. Maybe I'm still an idiot, maybe it's an unacceptable compromise to you, but for me, when I'm often outside in the freezing cold, walking everywhere to the store or work or meeting friends, running errands, I have far better access this way.

      I know it’s been 5 years, but I agree. I carry an across chest sling bag, and have the zipper open. There is 0.0% chance I could get under my clothes and jacket faster than I can reach down and unholster my gun from being right on my chest.

    It'll end with the victim and the perpetrator fighting to gain control of the item for survival.
    If you get the permit, then carry it as best you can to access it in a moment's notice... it's pointless to do otherwise.

      Exactly! I don't agree with purse carry (for me at least, because I don't like to keep a purse on me all the time, and it can be hard to draw), but the holster should be secured to the purse so you aren't drawing it out of the purse with the gun. And practice will make that draw fast.

    my question is.....what type of on body carry would you recommend for a woman who wears "yoga pants?"

    • @geaugafirearmsacademy
      @geaugafirearmsacademy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question this is really the big decision because there has to be "some" compromise when one takes on the huge responsibility to carry a firearm. I would recommend wearing yoga pants for - yoga. If someone is wearing yoga pants for appearance (because they have the body type and want to show it) why not wear the shortest jean shorts (or something like that) they want with an IWB holster and a shirt that is loose at the bottom. Thanks for watching!

    It's all about training. Within 21 feet on body carry isn't going to be any different without training. You can train for off body carry the same as on body carry. It also makes a difference in the type of bag or pack you're off body carrying with as well.

    I work on a college campus. Sometimes I’m restricted by what I wear as well and I’m a guy. Fortunately, I work in a private office, and when I’m not able to carry on person, I have my “day planner” in my office that contains my weapon. I hear what you’re saying, but when that active shooter walks into my building, I will at least have a fighting chance.

    Great PSA. Mythbusters also did this and even with Adam looking right at Jaime when he started and knowing it was going to be knife vs gun he still failed inside 7 meters. I've also seen police training videos concluding the same. Seven paces is too short to perform a complicated draw or rack a slide and still fire accurately.

      On Myth Busters the gun did not have a round in the chamber. There was some time spent racking the gun but the gun was in a holster as opposed to being in a purse. Carrying a gun does not guarantee 100% safety. You can still be killed even if you are armed with a gun.

    Not even a fair match, as you know. The '12 foot rule' also applies to people who have a holstered weapon. Unless you're VERY practiced in quick draw techniques, the 'perp' is going to win this contest every time.

      You're right. Poor choice of words on my part. I should have said that within 21 feet, the 'perp' in your scenario has a distinct advantage over the one trying to extricate their firearm from a purse, backpack, even a holster. Love your videos. Just thought I'd add my 'two cents'.

      Ditto Nick. I'm old school and carry a 5 round revolver in a suede right side front pants pocket. The most important thing any person can do is be aware of their surroundings and avoid situations that may require firearm use and the associated legal drama. My carry pants (shorts and long) have deep pockets which allow me to comfortably sink my gun butt from view but still allow me to have my hand(s) in my pockets and ready for weapon presentation if needed. Neil's video is very well presented and demonstrated.

    As a fellow firearms instructor, I GREATLY APPRECIATE and VALUE the time and effort that you and Kim have put into making these VERY insightful and well thought out videos... and particularly in demonstrating effective training and carry techniques for the ....... gentler sex. This video brings up a VERY important issue for both men and women alike as men also may carry in a briefcase. One of my women students who daily arrives at her workplace at 5:15am when the area is virtually devoid of people or security, has been carrying in her purse .......... however, she DOES unholster her weapon and has it in her strong side hand hidden in the purse when transiting to and from the parking area until safely in a secure area in the building. My thought was that this IS a viable adaptation ................ but I would appreciate your analysis and thoughts also......... thanks for your time.......... and PLEASE ............ keep producing these great instructional videos !!!

    • @geaugafirearmsacademy
      @geaugafirearmsacademy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would assume there is no possible way she can carry IWB which is why she is off body carrying in the first place (however I don't know what reason could be since she is taking her gun with her in the bag?). If my assumption is wrong, and it is just a personal decision show her this video- who knows many times another third party opinion makes a big difference. If she cannot then having the gun drawn in her hand in the bag seems like a reasonable option as long as she has perfect finger discipline. My concern (and I am sure yours as well) is accidentally pressing the trigger in the bag. Thanks for watching and commenting we appreciate your support!!

      Kim GFA I was told to shoot through the purse as it can easily be replaced rather than do the fishing around that it takes to pull it out and I know that you are more than likely to miss the first shot but at least your hand is on the gun and your finger on the trigger.

      @67bowman who said, "(shooting from inside a purse)...you are MORE THAN LIKELY TO MISS first shot but at least your hand is on the gun and your finger on the trigger." (emphasis added)
      Extremely irresponsible!
      If you are 'more than likely to miss the first shot', then YOU DO NOT FIRE!
      If you don't know where YOUR bullet is going to go, then YOU DO NOT FIRE!
      If you don't know what YOU are going to hit, then YOU DO NOT FIRE!
      You also don't put your "finger on the trigger" until you are IMMINENTLY sighting on the target and ready to fire the weapon at your KNOWN target.

    I have had discussions with women who like and/or carry firearms,,and not all are pocket pistols....some wear IWB with or without belt,,with t-shirt and unbuttoned outer shirt with long tails,,some have tried the T-shirt with built in shoulder holster pocket,,but most still carry in a purse most of the time......mainly because once they started carrying at all,felt unprepared and unsafe to at least not have their firearm with them......I have also found that finding the "right" holster takes some trials,which generally means a drawer full of holsters,,and most men can wear concealed many ways.......but with women I think maybe some options to try could be a belly band,,or similar type pouch like the Smart Carry....I have seen many models on the market and think one of these could work for just about any type of clothing.....even the yoga pants,,wear band like a IWB,front or back,, about 1/2 above waist,,then wrap a large scarf,wrap as stylish belt with knot/remaining tails on off gun side.......could be worn like this all year.....both concealed and stylish....even over a dress with ornate scarf wrapped around as 4"to 6" waist belt......only downfall I kind of see,is most women don't dress the same way 2 days in a row...............men seldom dress 2 different ways all year............check out .."".concealcarrygirl videos"" .....................just sharing a thought............

    Please correct me if I'm mistaken. Off body carry is the ideal way to carry. 1. A person can switch alert levels seamlessly by simply placing hand in bag this gives an advantage in many ways. 2. There is no need to draw, just shoot from the bag. Being alert is key.

    • @kimgfa7978
      @kimgfa7978 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stroh Bruke that's assuming that you know the attack is coming. Of course situational awareness is important, but we are only humans. If they catch you off guard, game over. And I hear it all the time, I always know everything around me. We are not super heroes and this is not a movie or a training exercise. I would call BS. I hope no one would be careless enough to carry in a bag with no trigger guard. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    This IS a VERY important video. Females are the most affected but some males too. The only time I carry off body is when doing construction/fabrication projects about the home or similar, and my 10 MM is within reach in a expedition pouch. I'm also a JKD instructor with real world fight experiences and I've drawn a firearm 6 X in defense. I'm a big brute with hyper awareness and the ability to easily enter a fight and use improvised weapons. These work-situations are the most uncomfortable times in my life, with all that said. I prefer my EAA Witness 10MM and a .45 ACP BUG in holsters, with reloads. You gals had better get real and find a holster system that works for you, fast in real world conditions

    I watched the very beginning, and shut off when the drill was" I'll shout " go " from 10 wherever, and I bet I can tag you before you can a shot off. BS, how about having the armed person get ready with their hand on the gun butt facing you, then yell ready, you'll get tagged every time. I carry off body, I drill getting a shot off in 15 seconds, every time. I have extensive training, and have been in many a situation of danger. Never have I been in a situation where you couldn't see escalation rise in less than 15 seconds. Being aware of your surroundings, and keeping safe distances is paramount. I have a gun friend, very experienced, ask me what would I do if someone came behind me and hit me in the head with a bat, just the same as anyone, I'd get hurt. I just can't believe that getting a shot off in less that 5 seconds is wise to practice, in 5 seconds most people couldn't even recognize a lethal threat. ARM YOURSELF CRIME WILL STOP

      Yep - I've never been a fan of purse/briefcase/folio sorts of carry, even specially designed ones. Having the weapon on your body is awkward and occasionally uncomfortable, but those same qualities confers a huge advantage as well - you always are aware of it, and know where it is and how to draw it. And think of the first rule of active self-defense - "run away if you can". Well, what happens to a purse over your shoulder when you run? It bounces all over the place, making access to your weapon even more difficult. In a stress situation, it's always going to be far easier to access a weapon on your body than one in some accessory you are carrying. And even with Kim's yoga pants and light coat, on-body CC is perfectly do-able a number of different ways. Use it, and practice it. I've seen a couple of these vids now, and I am subbing this channel. Great job, guys!! :-)

    A 20' rush isn't really a good example. Even if she had a holster on her body, it may be a challenge to get it out in time. This has been discussed as a knife attack situation for years. I personally think the best argument against carrying in a purse is possibility that a criminal is going to snatch the purse as he walks by (Pretty common situation). Not only do you now not have access to your firearm for defense, but a criminal now has your firearm.
    *Edit*
    Btw, I think a better option for carrying while wearing yoga paints, shorts, etc. Is a fanny pack holster. It is buckled to your body. Yeah, it's not as stylish as a purse, but it works.

    I agree that carry in a purse or bag is less effective. However there are times when I'm wearing athletic shorts that a holster isn't practical. What's your opinion on fanny pack carry? The pack is actually attached to you and can be easily hidden under a shirt.
    Also I think you'd find that very few people are going to have a successful draw in an ambush situation at that distance, regardless of carry method. Your average person just doesn't train enough to instinctively react. My wife carries her pepper spray in her hand whenever walking alone... which would probably give her a better shot at survival IMO.

      That's cool. I've almost resorted to duct tape. :)

      Paranormal Biker : What is a "sticky holster"? I am a woman who does NOT wear or own a belt. I live in South Texas so I can't wear a cardigan, jacket or sweater to help conceal a gun. I wear jean shorts about 90% of the time with a fitted v-neck shirt. I do wear jeans sometimes but again, with a fitted shirt... I'm thinking of a holster that could go on the inside of my shorts with a clip or something to hook it to the top of my shorts/pants? I could then wear the shirts I wear which go down several inches past my waste. Is there something like I'm describing? Thank you!😊

    We did this drill while in military and it's action vs reaction... guy with a knife will get you every time before you draw and put them down... you might get a round in them but at that distance they will get you every time

    I used to have a conceal carry purse. My attacker charged from the front, and my only reacton time available was to swing at my attacker with my purse. Before I could get my bearings and reach for my gun, he had drawn a gun on me, so of course I handed it over. I wish I would have at least thrown it at him. He did take the purse, and run and jump in a car. We walked the parking lot hoping that he would have just grabbed out the wallet and dropped it.

      Mary Rodgers I'm sorry you had to go through that, but glad you are okay. So many people think they are ninjas, but fail to realize how quickly an attack happens and how hard it is to react under stress. thanks for watching. stay safe ☺

    that depends on the bag, there's such things like quick draw bags.

    For how it could work, you could either keep you bag organized since you should do it anyway and if it could saver your life even better or you could modify your bag to have a easily accessible pocket with the holstered gun or better yet learn some hand to hand combat so when they get that close and you cant get your gun you can still fuck them up.

    Why people carry their ccw in a bag or fanny pack is beyond me. Good video thanks for sharing.
