Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the Finnish people, it must be very nice to visit their country. Traveling to Finland is a dream of mine.
I also love listening to the Finnish language, it has such an interesting rhythm and unique sound!

Hugely kind words for the Finnish people from you and I agree. I went to school in upper Michigan where there were large areas of Finlanders, many who spoke no English, many who spoke Finnglish (a mix of Finnish and English). They were warm, friendly, helpful, incredible people.
That's very interesting, I din't even know that there are areas of Finlanders in the US.
@@MerlinFlexer , the percentage of people leaving for "Amerika" was very high in Finland, and they tendet to go for areas of woods and lakes there too. I also have relatives in the USA put those left in the early 1950 and sometimes they make a trip to Finland too.
@@MerlinFlexerThere is also findians, offspring of Finn and Native American. Finns were considered inferior to Germanic “races”, so they mingled with the natives who were also suppressed by the other Europeans.
@@MerlinFlexerI’m very glad to have seen this video and the ‘four years ago’ with your two friends. You are obviously ‘tuned in’ to the Nordic world; perhaps one day I will be fortunate to also have that experience.
Plenty of immigrants from the Nordics immigrated to try US. My brother in law’s family is from Norway and they settled in Minnesota and South Dakota with many other Nordic groups from Scandinavia. Michigan , Minnesota and the Dakota states had significant populations of these people.

Ich habe mehrfach das gleiche erlebt in finnisch Lappland und hätte niemals gedacht, es gäbe nettere Menschen als Schweden :D
My experiences with Finnish people is that in the city they mind their own business and don't know their neighbors and in the countryside the door is always unlocked for your neighbors to come and go any time.

You were in lapland and people in lapland are very nice, friendly and open.
I'm in the Finnish (i'm not a Finn) country side and people are super nice. Friendly, approachable, respectful even the older generation will start a conversation with you with minimal language skills either way.

It is a bit unfortunate with the German language in Finland - the basic langueges taught at school used to be Finnish, English, Swedish and German in that order, each language starting a bit later. Then if you chose a shorter math course you would get French on top of that list for the last few years of school. Nowadays it is more common that people only study the first three for any meaningful amount of years and then there is a variety of optional languages that you only study the basics of. Therefore fewer people than ever before can now speak German in Finland. It used to be quite common that at least a basic conversation was possible but that is no longer the case.
I remember once visiting a summer cottage with German friends of my sister, and the host who was an older Finnish man, when asked if he understood any German, replied: "Hier sprechen wir alle Sprache." Nowadays the Finns speak better English than ever, but we are losing the other languages.
That's interesting to learn. So overall Finnish people are still better at speaking German than Germans are at speaking Finnish :)
@@MerlinFlexer Historically the Finns have gone to the German universities since the beginning of Lutheranism in the 1500's and also during the nanionalistic movement in the 1800's Germany was the place to be. And I have noticed that at the turn of the 1900's my grandmother has had a German biology book at school - it was too much of a task trying to write, translate and print books with pictures when you could get them from Germany with the only slight obstacle being the language that you were supposed to learn anyway. Nowadays we have lost much of the connection to Germany; EU maybe bringing it back a little bit, especially after brexit.

I always like to hear how finnish sounds like to people from other languages. I speak some german and I think people have such stereotypical view of it, like that it's somehow harsh, aggressive or blunt. Kinda the same stereotype as with finnish! To me german is so soft and melodic. To understand the language is I think to understand the country and its people truly, but it all starts with just listening ❤

how about this. I was going to spend a night in the city of vaasa. lady on the phone said she had an appartment in the city centre and said just leave the money on the bed when you leave. how about that for trust
