This skill was working perfectly for me for months. Then, a couple of weeks ago, it just stopped. I did all the usual steps; went back to the beginning and made sure everything was enabled correctly. Checked the mac address, removed the skill and added it again. But the app just can't find my PC anymore. However, I can wake my PC with other wake on lan apps; it's just this skill that's stopped working.
Thats a weird one. It did happen to me once, and it turned out the skill had disconnected from the Alexa app, but it sounds like you may be having a different issue. Now I want to turn all OFF with the voice, and I dont know if paying for will work fine tbh xD Idk why i think that, But great video, works for me at 10/24/2020.
The switching off seems to give people less issues as it is just an app that sits and waits for a command and tells Windows to shutdown, if you do decide to buy it the only thing is to make sure you let it through your firewall. :)

No problems so far, but no harm reaching out to the creator to see if he can answer any questions you might have. At least Amazon have allowed the skill so at least theres some potential accountability.
Could be a few things to be honest. You could try the following, but each machine is slightly different so it's really trial and error. Best bet is to Google search wake on lan for your specific PC and see if theres any particular settings you need. * update the driver for the network card * check that WOL is enabled in the bios * disable any firewalls temporarily
True! Figured this out the hard way! In more recent videos I do this or refer to Alexa as 'herself ' in my best Irish accent. :) Thanks for the input though 👍
Hardly any experience with PC’s and stuff like this, got an Alexa last month after getting a smart bulb in my room and being obsessed with seeing how many things I can turn on with my Alexa, got my Xbox working and can even launch games via Alexa even tho it’s easier to just use your controller but that’s not cool, and even got my pc working on it with this despite it being really old and basically useless at times
It gets a bit addictive trying to figure out what you can automate. :) I've done locks, heaters, every plug socket, fans, TVs and next thing is hopefully going to be window blinds. :) Have fun 👍

I used a Gosund mini smart plug as power on/off switch for my PC. All you have to do is press the power on switch on your phone app, but have to enable the power management on the bios setup.
Great Video! Will this still work if the (amazon echo) is far way from from the computer? For example if the amazon echo is in another room or if i use the app remotely will it power it on?
Thanks for the vid! I was able to get it to turn on and off my computer. but how do you control your monitor to turn on also? right now, I have dual monitors plugged into a smart plug, Alexa routine to turn them both on and off, but when turning on with the routine my screens stay black until I move my mouse. any ideas to fix that?
This might rely on the monitor settings tbh. Some monitors which support CEC have settings that will automatically turn on when they receive a HDMI signal so you might see if your monitor supports that.
So I wanna put this here for anyone in need of a bit of help getting this all set up, I was almost ready to join the handful of the comment section asking for help because it just wasn't working no matter what I did. Until I noticed something odd about my ethernet driver itself, it was last updated in 2015 and was all up to date which led me to realize it's nothing to do with my hardware and all to do with my software. I spent probably an hr and a half trying to trouble shoot and ended up fixing it by doing these 2 simple steps, starting with going into your bios clicking advanced and making sure you actually have WOL enabled. Many people still complain after this that they still don't see it which was my personal experience until I installed a recent version + update of my driver, now I can see the power management tab and all the stuff under devices that wasn't there prior to the reinstallation. (Note that you wanna make sure you uninstall the outdated driver before the reinstallation just make sure you download the correct version first or you won't have any internet.) Hope this helps someone in need!
It's not working, everytime I ask to turn on my pc alexa says ok then nothing happens. And on the wake on lan app on my phone it just keeps saying PC woke even though it's off.
So check out some recent comments as there are some updates and bios options to try suggested by some people. Bare in mind this will only work on lan cards and if the wake on lan app doesn't work its most likely the local network or the PC setup.
@@AndysTechLife Hi Andy, thanks for the quick reply. It works for me over Wi-Fi, I can shut down the PC and also turn it on. However, I can only wake it up if it's in Sleep or Hibernate. Cannot wake it up when fully shutdown. I checked the BIOS and windows for anything turning off the network card but with no avail.
1. The network cable should be connected ? 2. It will work if my Mac code is just 12 digits? 3. Normally now "my laptop" is shown on the device lists, but it's not responsive.
1. Yes will only work with network cable not via laptop. 2. MAC addresses are generally 12 digits with : between each pair of 2. 3. Don't understand that last one tbh. But this will work with any wired device as long as the bios and card support Wake On Lan
so I got it to work for turning my computer on from sleep mode, but it will not power on from off status and it also wont turn my pc off either and I did purchase the license. any ideas? thanks
I know the first time it didnt work for me I had to update the driver for my network card and then it worked. You might also check if theres a setting that allows the device to shut down the computer as I've seen this in some power settings and ensure this is enabled. Hope this helps. Seems like this isn't the most straightforward setup for some people.
Thank you for the video!! I can only get it to work when my PC is sleeping, not shut down (which is better than I had it before) which is a little frustrating... any thoughts?
Sounds like there's a setting that is telling the network card to fully switch off when you power the PC off. You might check power settings and see if there's an option to allow or prevent the PC from turning off the network card. Check out some of the other comments here too as there are a few things to try depending on your particular setup.
WOL on the eithernetwork card? Does your compute need to be connected to a hub through an ethernet cable? Or will this work when your PC is wifi? thanks
Only works via ethernet as the ethernet cable provides enough power to trigger the wake on lan command. Wifi will switch off when the PC is off so can't listen for the wake command.
1. should i logout from wolskill website after setting up the info ? 2.In your video wolskill is showing Amazon id and a License no but for me it is only Amazon ID...why? 3. " Now you can add the WOL skill on the Alexa app, sign in with the same details and it will detect this PC as a smart device that Alexa can now control." .......... this Alexa app is installed where in my pc or in my phone?
It doesn't matter if you logout from the website when you're done adding PCs, however if you watch fully, you need to sign up for a licence and WOLskill ID to use the windows app. Wake on lan you can do without a licence, but to use the PC app which performs the shutdown you need a licence. It's once off and unlimited.
hiya mate, class video thanks very much, however i have an issue being that under my network adapters i dont have a realtek pcie gbe family controller, only the WAN miniports, any suggestions on what to do? thanks.
So this will only work with wired Lan cards so if you can figure out the lan adaptor you have the setup should be very similar. Best to Google your own PC as you might find what to look for.
I have a problem, I have the option of wake on lan on my bios on. But when i give the command to alexa didn't work. Only works when the pc is suspected
The only things I can think if here is that the Bios may have a setting for sleep instead of switch off. Or the lan card could be turned off by windows when the PC powers off. Best to Google your own bios and lan card to see if there's a specific setting. Just FYI there are some cards and bios that just don't seem to support. :( hope you get it sorted.
I try hitting the Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller Properties you've mentioned at around 3:19, but it only shows me 6 little tabs. General, Advanced, Driver, Details, Events, and Resources. Does this mean my computer is not capable of running it?
Bare in mind the off function needs the app and a licence on the PC. If the app is installed on your PC and the ID and licence says connected the only thing id suggest is checking if your firewall or security settings are blocking the WOL skill app.
Hi Andy and everyone. Great Video I just can't bring my Alexa to turn on the computer. Does the computer need a WLAN connection? My PC has only a LAN connection. Can this be the problem? Otherwise I don't know where I fail. I followed every step.
Hi there, yes this only works with Lan not over WiFi. Most common issues are the driver for the network card needing updating, firewall blocking or wrong MAC address on the website. What's interesting is that the Alexa skill will pick up the device even if the MAC address is incorrect as it takes its queue from the website. Best thing to try is install a free Wake on LAN app for your phone and see if everything works doing that way. If not you know its the pc or network that is the issue. If it does work then you know its an issue with the WOL skill. Hope this helps.
Found a way, but its really complicated and needs, IFTTT, your phone, and an android app, so im going to see if there's an easier way. If not ill do a video going through the steps anyway.
Can I make the turn off PC command to put the PC to sleep mode instead if I customize the PC's power button to (sleep) from the "Choose what the power buttons do" in the Control Panel?
So in the Windows companion app for WOL Skill there is an option to change from shutdown to sleep, but to be honest it never seems to work for me but you might have more luck :(
Andy: Considering this process.......However in just perusing the early steps I noticed one of the steps when checking access was "ONLY allow wake up with a magic packet" ??????? If I check this box; will I still be able to turn the PC on manually???
Yes the magic packet is only for the wake on lan method, its just a specific packet of information that it waits for, but everything manual will remain unaffected.
So at this point in the video I'm not downloading a new app, I'm going into the Alexa app on the mobile phone and adding the Wake On Lan skill. There's no additional apps needed on your phone, but you do need to add the skill to Alexa for it to work. So all of this is done on the Alexa app. Later on, if you want to turn off the PC you'll need to install the PC app on the PC itself from www.wolskill.com/ and add the license key etc.
Thanks for the video! I was really excited to try all this with my new Echo. I followed every step and nothing worked... I have a hunch that my Ubiquiti Unify setup might complicate things as I have multiple MAC addresses for my setup... do you happen to know how to get this to work?
Not really familiar with the Ubiquiti Unify network setup tbh, but there should still be only 1 mac address for the lan card on you PC. The mac address is the hardware address so you need to find the one for your wired network card on the pc itself as this doesn't work via WiFi. Best thing is to get a free wake on lan app for your phone and use that to find and test the right mac address and check the setup is correct on your PC
@@AndysTechLife Yes, I found the 1 MAC address for my LAN card, but before that MAC address is my switch which has a different MAC address, and before THAT is a gateway which has ANOTHER MAC address. So the order goes Gateway MAC >> Switch MAC >> LAN MAC.. too much of a networking noob to try and get this =/
You shouldn't need any of those tbh. The wake on lan command will go straight to the mac address of the PC. As long as all the devices are on the same network the echo should see and be able to talk to the MAC of the PC. Don't over complicate it by worrying about other devices. Best option is to start by getting wake on lan working from the phone app and work from there.

It worked for me to turn on the PC after enabling an option in BIOS, but it only turn it on not off .. any suggestions? and thank you for the great tutorial and overall content!
Generally either the windows app installed on your PC needs firewall access to listen for the turn off command, or the license and key from the Wolskill website are incorrect. these are the most common causes of the 'off' command not working.
Funnily enough I couldn't find it in the allowed list on my 'allow through firewall option' in windows, so this may not be an issue. I've added it manually by adding a new app through the firewall and adding wolskill.exe from the folder its sitting in. I'd suggest try reinstalling the windows app and ensuring that it says that your license key and ID are correct and it shows up as connected. If this is all correct you should be good to go.
For some reason this is not working for me, I did triple check everything, my MAC is right, I tried multiple names for the PC, the PC is showing in my devices in Alexa app, I did re do it couple of times in different orders, in the bios wake op on lan is enabled, it is the right lan card because it is the only one I have and I did quadruple check that my PC is using that card to connect to the internet, even in the bios the MAC was the same as the one on wolskill, account is showing as linked with green color and still when I tell alexa to start it with no matter what what "switch on my" or "turn on the" she says "OK" and nothing happens...

@@AndysTechLife Ok, your answer made me search again to maybe find why it didn't work and I found it and fixed it! The issue was that in the BIOS of ASUS mobos(B360 Asus ROG STRIX F-Gaming is mine) there is a setting "Power on PC by PCI-E" which have to be enabled, and now it works perfectly. Maybe you can communicate that some other users aswell, it is in the Advanced/APM Configuration/Power on PC by PCI-E - Enabled, thank you.
Set it up everything worked but one problem, my machine is waking up at 12 AM GMT that is 5:30 AM indian standard time. How do I get rid off this spurious wake up?
The only thing I can think of here is that there may be an auto power on setting in the bios or setting of the card which is triggering at that time. I'd check the bios first as some have the option to auto on at a selected time. The Alexa stuff shouldn't be doing this unless you've created some routine to do this at that time.
@@AndysTechLife Thanks for the reply, I haven't set up any routine for the wakeup. BIOS also I could find only one option that is to toggle WOL feature, there aren't any time based wake up settings.
Not sure what would be causing this then. Maybe try disabling the Alexa skill and see if it still triggers, if it does you know its the PC that's the issue so its setting somewhere, if not it may be a glitch with the skill.
@@AndysTechLife Actually I have switched off the echo device itself. Let me see. Also I have dual boot machine, wondering if there is a Windows update being attempted at 12AM GMT.
Have a look through the rest of the comments here and see if there's anything else to try. Other than that all I can suggest is reaching out to the skill creator
Under advanced I don't see Wake on Lan or Magic Packet, though I did have the correct settings available in the power management section. Any idea what I need to do?
It might show up as something slightly different on some cards. Bare in mind this is lan cards only. One thing to try is updating the drivers for the lan card and if that doesn't work only advice is to Google you're specific network card to see if the option is available.
Best to check out the other comments on this video as there are multiple reasons. Hopefully you'll find a resolution in one of them. The skill saying disconnected is generally a firewall issue or wrong MAC address. Failing that your best bet is to contact the skill creator.

No problems so far, but no harm reaching out to the creator to see if he can answer any questions you might have. At least Amazon have allowed the skill so at least theres some potential accountability.
I feel the same way can you look into this more as for security I just bought a IR on off for my cube but I like this too

Great, thanks for letting everyone know :)
@@AndysTechLife Its November 11 and it does not work
I can’t turn desktop off I can’t turn on how do I fix this
Could be a few things to be honest. You could try the following, but each machine is slightly different so it's really trial and error. Best bet is to Google search wake on lan for your specific PC and see if theres any particular settings you need.
* update the driver for the network card
* check that WOL is enabled in the bios
* disable any firewalls temporarily
Works great 👍🏻
Something other youtubers do that you should to... censor the word “Alexa” so it doesn’t wake up any voice assistants.
True! Figured this out the hard way! In more recent videos I do this or refer to Alexa as 'herself ' in my best Irish accent. :) Thanks for the input though 👍
Thank you so much this is so cool!

OMG THIS IT THE BEST THING EVER I LOVE IT I JUST HAD TO DO SOME BIOS CHANGES BUT ITS SUPER
Happy to help :)
Thanks for the tips , I only can turn off the PC neither turn it on or sleep , any thoughts
Best thing is to use a free wake on lan app from your phone to check its setup correctly. Each PC has slightly different BIOS and lan card settings so best to Google your own setup as there's no way to troubleshoot each specific configuration.
Remember this doesn't work with WiFi cards, only wired lan, and not all motherboards will support so best to Google your card and board to see if there's specific settings for your hardware.
Most common issues are:
* firewall blocking
* wrong mac address on website
* lan card needs updating
(June 2022) I can only turn off my Acer Predator by saying: "Alexa, turn off the computer" and when I said "Alexa, turn on my computer" it won't turn my computer on. I tried to follow your instructions to the letter, but the software in the Alexa App is different and my computer wont' let me access its BOIS.
Update: I had to take out the hardware I installed on my laptop and use the laptop alone to access its BOIS Settings. I enabled "Wake on LAN" and I can only turn the laptop off

Brilliant so far just carnt seem to tick only allow magic packet to wake the computer /power management
Had the same issue myself first time around and only seemed to let me after 2 updates of the driver for my network card. Try and see if there's any windows updates first then try updating the network card driver in the properties. Hope this helps
I used a Gosund mini smart plug as power on/off switch for my PC. All you have to do is press the power on switch on your phone app, but have to enable the power management on the bios setup.
Sounds good, but do you have issues with windows not shutting down properly when you turn off?
@@AndysTechLife No. It worked normally. I couldn’t power on/off with Alexa Echo for some reason, even though it was added to my device on Alexa app
Works on ASUS laptop 05.06.2022. Turned off "fast start" as recommended in comments.
Thankyou it worked for me
Amazing ! I really want it. Just buyed echo dot right now thanks to amazon prime day. I can't wait to setup it and turn my PC on with alexa commands
works really well nice one
Great Video! Will this still work if the (amazon echo) is far way from from the computer? For example if the amazon echo is in another room or if i use the app remotely will it power it on?
Doesn't matter as long as they're on the same network. The Echo sends the wake ping over the network so they can be anywhere in the house.
Some monitors which support CEC have settings that will automatically turn on when they receive a HDMI signal so you might see if your monitor supports that.
october 31 2021!! thanks man!
This looks great , can i add it to a routine like "Alexa turn on office" and it brings on both pc's and the led strips and opens the blinds?
Yup, I've a routine which turns on the smart switch on my monitor, boots up the pc and turns on the lightstrip behind. :)

Thanks so much for sharing your tips!

@@AndysTechLife Welcome :)
A user called Neo Axelsson has some good suggestions in the comments...
Thanks! Very helpful! Works great after some BIOS tweaking. Dec 2020.
Good to hear. Thanks for the feedback!
Sorry where in the bios settings do I change it
Thanks for this video Andy! Quick question:
- Can this work over Wifi? Or does the PC have to be connected directly to the router via ethernet cable?
No afraid not. Since the WiFi card is off and doesn't remain connected to the network it can't listen to the wake command so only works on LAN
@@AndysTechLife It works for switching it off, but not ON... I've done the steps correctly
so I got it to work for turning my computer on from sleep mode, but it will not power on from off status and it also wont turn my pc off either and I did purchase the license. any ideas? thanks
Same Problem
I know the first time it didnt work for me I had to update the driver for my network card and then it worked. You might also check if theres a setting that allows the device to shut down the computer as I've seen this in some power settings and ensure this is enabled. Hope this helps. Seems like this isn't the most straightforward setup for some people.
@@AndysTechLife that didn't work for me
thanks for the info help alot!
Why would I NOT have that power mgmt tab on the adapter properties?
Might be the driver or if its not an integrated card it may not support power control. Best to Google your particular lan card.
It works, thank you
So glad it helps:)
hiya mate, class video thanks very much, however i have an issue being that under my network adapters i dont have a realtek pcie gbe family controller, only the WAN miniports, any suggestions on what to do? thanks.
So this will only work with wired Lan cards so if you can figure out the lan adaptor you have the setup should be very similar. Best to Google your own PC as you might find what to look for.
why hasnt amazon just released something with the same ability. just enter the mac address on the app and done.
Yeah would be great if they did. I'm hoping once the windows Alexa app gets better this is something they'll consider.
I’d like to buy the premium version but they won’t accept my card 🤷♂️
That's really weird! Worth reaching out to the creator at: info@oscarpenelo.com
@@AndysTechLife had to get a virtual second card after some hassle, fraud prevention was screaming at wolskil
I try hitting the Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller Properties you've mentioned at around 3:19, but it only shows me 6 little tabs. General, Advanced, Driver, Details, Events, and Resources. Does this mean my computer is not capable of running it?
I didn't have the power management option until I did a driver update and a windows update. give that a go and see if it changes anything.
Does this work if you’re using and Ethernet cable? My pc has bluetooth but no wireless Wi-Fi
Hey there, this only works with ethernet as WiFi switches off and disconnects from the network when powered off so can't listen for the wake command.
Worked perfectly thanks. My Alexa wont turn off my computer though. I´m only available to turn it on, why is that?
Bare in mind the off function needs the app and a licence on the PC. If the app is installed on your PC and the ID and licence says connected the only thing id suggest is checking if your firewall or security settings are blocking the WOL skill app.
@@AndysTechLife Thanks for the fast answer Andy. I totally forgot I had to buy the WOL license.
What about Google assistant how would you do that?
Will look into it. Havent found a way yet. :)
Pretty sure there is a way but I'll let you know.
Found a way, but its really complicated and needs, IFTTT, your phone, and an android app, so im going to see if there's an easier way. If not ill do a video going through the steps anyway.
I think a video would be great! I don't seem to find any on Google assistance and could help lots of lazy People!
Just FYI, got around to doing a video about this (very briefly) th-cam.com/video/tK89BYhRy5o/w-d-xo.html
Can I make the turn off PC command to put the PC to sleep mode instead if I customize the PC's power button to (sleep) from the "Choose what the power buttons do" in the Control Panel?
So in the Windows companion app for WOL Skill there is an option to change from shutdown to sleep, but to be honest it never seems to work for me but you might have more luck
:(
Thank you I appreciate it!
Andy: Considering this process.......However in just perusing the early steps I noticed one of the steps when checking access was
"ONLY allow wake up with a magic packet" ??????? If I check this box; will I still be able to turn the PC on manually???
Yes the magic packet is only for the wake on lan method, its just a specific packet of information that it waits for, but everything manual will remain unaffected.
@6:40 what apps did you download??and you downloaded it on your PC or cellphone??thanks
@@AndysTechLife Thanks! I'll give it a shot and see if it works

It worked for me to turn on the PC after enabling an option in BIOS, but it only turn it on not off .. any suggestions? and thank you for the great tutorial and overall content!
So to turn off you'll need the Windows app installed and a licence as the off command sends a shutdown to this app rather than to the bios.

Thanks! It works when i turn it on but when I say turn off it wouldn't. Any fix?
Generally either the windows app installed on your PC needs firewall access to listen for the turn off command, or the license and key from the Wolskill website are incorrect. these are the most common causes of the 'off' command not working.
@@AndysTechLife what would be the name in the firewall to be enabled?

I did everything as you said, double checked the bios and the MAC address but my pc doesn't want to turn on.

@@AndysTechLife i can turn it on but i can't turn it off, why?

Yes as long as there's a physical Echo device on the same network as your PC.

The wolskill doesn't work the wolskill app just says disconnected. I even bought the premium but I'm not getting any use out of it.
Best to check out the other comments on this video as there are multiple reasons. Hopefully you'll find a resolution in one of them. The skill saying disconnected is generally a firewall issue or wrong MAC address. Failing that your best bet is to contact the skill creator.
Just came across this tutorial, doesn't seem to be working for me. Does this require an Ethernet connection?
Yes only works on ethernet as WiFi doesn't remain connected when powered off.
