Growing up in NB & NS, have great memories of river (and some ocean cove) skating in the winter. But 2”?? Our minimum was always 6. 😅 Good point about the water below not being moving, but if you do go through weak ice it could be hard (& time consuming) to get out onto thicker ice. The sounds are amazing!
A suggestion: early ice is a riot- sometimes so clear you can see to the bottom! We've even found frogs in hibernation on the bottom. One thing we ALWAYS had with us was a 8-10" pole- if you do drop through, the pole carried crosswise is something is something that can stop your drop . Also, a pair of icepicks worn on a leather thong can be used to help crawl out. the poles can also be used to extend to help pull someone out! Voice of experience! The singing is expansion of water freezing on a still lake, or the change of the ice crystal when when your are walking on it. Fun to stress test the strength. Congrats on staying dry and for finding opportunity to enjoy- a life memory!
What you are talking about is my favorite adventure for this time of year. We in MN. Are about to get into it. Some people thinks it’s stupid yet what great adventures don’t have a little danger involved? You are right on with the items needed. I have chased fish and muskrats under the ice. I look crazy darting all over but a super rush flying on ice you see through completely. Only the cracks show the thickness. Love it, my highlight! Oh yeh, carry skate guards in case have to walk on shore…. Thanks guys, wish I could skate with you! Your smile says it all!
Black ice = pure enjoyment. No rink, no olympic oval can compare. A thin steel blade meeting the glassy ice hisses beneath your boots as you glide freely in the open air. Well, thank goodness for Noah and friends who shared their adventure. It brought back fond memories. Sadly, for many of us we no longer experience the extended winters of old where ice skating was a common occurrence . Thanks for posting.
One of pure joys of winter, SKATING!!! Sadly here in MA with global warming, not much pond or lake skating to be had anymore which is heartbreaking. Can't get over the conditions you had here and oh that sound....!!! Much appreciation for sharing 🙂
In the Scandinavian languages the word is pulka (that is what we say in Sweden) or something similar. It is borrowed from Finnish that in turn borrowed the word from the Sami apparently.
I will NEVER forget the first time I heard the ice make that noise. It was late at night, dead calm, on a huge lake (lake Champlain) and we walked out onto the ice. We started to hear that freaky sound from the ice, with a little snow cover, from a distance. It suddenly started to happen again and again, getting closer and closer, until it cracked right under our feet. My friend and I both ran for shore as fast as we could. 😀 We didn’t go out again till we saw a game warden on his quad, and he explained what was going on. I fell through once while ice fishing. It was a pressure ridge that we felt sure was refrozen. I felt it happening and was able to roll away, and only got wet to the waist. By the time I walked across the bay, my clothes were frozen so badly I couldn’t walk up the stairs to the cottage and had to sort of crawl. The sight of that dark grey water when the ice opened….never felt that safe after that. Especially when ice fishing like up to 1km off shore and it would crack under me, so you could see the water in the hole jump. We have skated a couple times on clear hard ice, but it’s so rare to get that there, and it was thicker than what you had. Like 4 inches. I won’t go out on less, because yes 2 inches is enough, but like anything, you need a safety margin. A strap for hoisting that is rated for 500lbs can actually hold at least 1000, but there is a margin for error, or flaws in the strap. Same goes for ice. You poke it here and it feels good, but 10 feet over, there could be a large flaw. Anyway glad you made it through your adventure. Pretty cool experience to live through.
Thanks Jim, your fall through the ice sounds like a pretty uncomfortable situation and a good reminder. We did keep pushing it farther and farther on this one.
So fun to get out on the fresh ice. but this had to be recorded last winter? love the ice talking can hear it on the local lakes from my house deep cold and calm nights.
You guys keep killing it with these videos! The content, the editing, and the personalities are all top notch. I cant believe this channel hasn't blown up bigger than it is yet. Keep er goin boys. Much love from Lab City! P.S Great to see Dave again!
Thanks for watching! This video is a little different than what we usually post but we had to share this epic day on the frozen water. What's your favourite way to travel in the winter? Edit: This was filmed last winter
Thanks for the excellent video! You are motivating me to set up a hot tent. Entering my seventieth winter, I've been lucky to experience the fantastic sounds that ice can make many times. It has so many voices, it one of my favorite sounds in nature. From the deep, almost thunderous booms, to fragile new ice which can sound like disturbing a crystal chandelier, it's always unreal. My favorite modes of getting around in winter are snowshoes and xc skis. However, just being afoot on snow in subzero fahrenheit temperatures listening to the unique sound the snow makes in the deep cold maybe my favorite.
I was just going to ask you if this was from last year because it hasn't got even close enough to start freezing the lakes around here yet. Glad to see you back Noah. I was wondering when you would post again. This was an epic adventure for sure. I love your back country adventures like staying in remote cabins, canvas tents etc. Just watching how you get there is always fun to watch. Knowing just how beautiful our province is (Nova Scotia) I always like to watch and see if there is anything I recognize when your video is rolling. How far down the Eastern Shore did you go on this adventure? Mother Nature she can make the most beautiful sounds if you really listen to her. The sounds of the ice cracking and singing was fantastic. I fully agree with the comment that it sounds like a Star War gun fight going on....Did you happen to see any little Green Men out there....lol Well I will have to wait to see what other kind of shenanigans you get yourself into. Take care and stay safe and warm and dry out there. :-)
Thanks Noah! Skating on fresh ice is the most exhilarating thing I have done repeatedly. I have never been so alive or felt so alive until I am gliding (fast) over ice that is totally clear. I typically do it on a clear lake so the bottom just pops at you. There is a lot of things that need to come together for really good ice and I have been lucky enough to be “that guy” that is out there. Chasing fish, muskrats, and seeing living creatures on the other side moving and living is incredible. Last year was the Toe grabbers which are like primitive beetle bugs that are 1-3”. Done it many, many times and now hope this year will be another. I need that infusion of Adrenalin pumping through me! THANK YOU for showing. FYI, these things are a must for me. Ice picks hanging around neck, long pole if going over deep water, and skate guards since I go on shore since very fresh till I feel it’s safer in the deep. If too thin, walk the ground without wrecking the blades. That noise will stay with you, it does with me. At 64, very medically challenged it is a huge driving force and privilege to experience! Thank you, thank you, thanks you. Stoked
Wow awesome video, enjoying sunny warm 30 degrees in Brisbane Australia while watching you ice skate. So good. Keep up the content, love what you guys do.
If you fell through you probably could just stand and step out of the hole. I used to orienteer through those areas in eastern NS. The lakes are so shallow and the bush so thick that many times I just ran across the lake bottom as it was much faster going.
This is one of the most unique videos that I have seen . The beauty of the surroundings was stunning, But, I fell through the ice one time which was not fun and took awhile to get out.. I was sitting on the edge of my seat just cringing and remembering my experience. It is still a cool video and maybe I will watch in again a little more at ease. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
You really should bring basic long-distance safety gear with you. Ice-prods, ice-pike, throwing line and a flotation devise (you can use a backpack with a "groin-strap, that way you can bring spare clothes).
We have those condition here in Sweden right now. We have had very cold, no snow and the ice is singing. It is magical. Most of our lakes even in the south is frozen and even some protected bays in the Baltic sea. I particularly love to be in the forest and then entering a small wood pound where you can see the methane bubbles in it. I walk however, and i use icepicks on my chest alongside my camera. Love it! Thank you for sharing as always guys!
Incredible Video guys. Dave is right, the sound under the ice sounds like a star wars movie. Stunning video. Looking forward to Noah and Alex's trek through Quebec.
Beauty vid guys. There's nothing like skating on pond/lake ice. The speed you can generate is unreal compared to an indoor arena. Cheers from Newfoundland!
Just awesome guys. I felt like I was skating with you. Well done. Wish I could have done it myself. It doesn't get much more Canadian than that. Cheers
Pretty cool! It will be a bit before the lakes are that frozen here in Nova Scotia, but when they are, there is one lake in particular that is great for skating just like you did and offers tons to explore! Perfect! Bruce and Otis
Beautiful video as always!! Looked like a great time and I'm sure the adrenaline was pumping on that singing ice. I'm in awe that you have those conditions already in Nova Scotia, I'm in Northern Ontario and we are not anywhere close to having ice yet. It sure was nice to watch you guys out there :)
So what does one say after watching 2 guys skate on thin, cracking, singing black ice? "OMG! You guys are crazy!" or " Thank god they didn’t fall in!" or "Psychologically terrifying" is an understatement! Also, "How do you get out once you fall in?" I will admit....it's always a rush to play with Mother Nature. And your playground is incredibly gorgeous. So very much hope that one day I can experience beautiful Nova Scotia. You are fortunate to have snow and ice already. Here, on the shores of southern Lake Ontario, alas, it will be a while yet. Beautiful video. Thank you.
Hey - Do they sell those harnesses and poles for the sleds on Amazon? If you link to your Amazon shop if you have one)I will buy a set up for my husband for Christmas. We live in the states though - but it would be perfect setup to use going out to our boat access only camp this winter,
Canada is cool country, I love wilderness. Here in Finland we have great nature

Yup,I’ve skated on Clear lake ice and it’s surreal. And If it’s in Canada well.......perfection.
Awesome guys Awesome footage wow

Enough winter, Gr8 video
I want to move to SE Asia
Ice sk8ing is almost impossible there.
Sailing with the wind is fun
Awesome, I had the best fall ever riding on ice with my bicycles. Been seeking the early ice for decades lol.

And i thought it was Pull + Pack = Pulk
Maybe that's why it caught on
A Canadian Dream. The sound of skates on natural ice. Magic
Smiling so hard through it all that my face hurts! Wonderful! Thank you!

Intresting vid. Thanks for taking the risk for the shot! And what an enchanting ring.. toodles
good to see a fellow bluenose bushcrafter, especially around my neck of the woods!!
So fun to get out on the fresh ice. but this had to be recorded last winter? love the ice talking can hear it on the local lakes from my house deep cold and calm nights.
that 90s MEC goretex jacket is worth some bonus points for sure.
Friggn love Dave. Great video boys!
Skating on raw ice scares the livin par-cheeseeze out of me.
You guys keep killing it with these videos! The content, the editing, and the personalities are all top notch. I cant believe this channel hasn't blown up bigger than it is yet. Keep er goin boys. Much love from Lab City!
P.S Great to see Dave again!
Appreciate it Merv!
You should have brought a puck and sticks!
i wish skate there too..it was awesome guys

I was gonna say there was no way it got that cold this early in NS lol.
Which lake was this?

Wow! So glad I live in Yarmouth County! Still green and all water open! Long live Nova Scotia’s banana belt! You can keep the ice. ;)
Thanks for sharing that rare experience Noah, and Dave!
So cool.Great video.Thank you very much.

AAAHHHH! SO COOL! What lake/river is that?
Where did you find this snow and ice...i live on the east coast of nova scotia , no snow as far as i can see.
Incredible! Like walking on water…. That was cool to watch, I can’t imagine the feeling of being there.
You really should bring basic long-distance safety gear with you. Ice-prods, ice-pike, throwing line and a flotation devise (you can use a backpack with a "groin-strap, that way you can bring spare clothes).

Great to hear your season is starting! We're still waiting here in Canada
Incredible Video guys. Dave is right, the sound under the ice sounds like a star wars movie. Stunning video. Looking forward to Noah and Alex's trek through Quebec.
The black ice skating was very unique. Never seen the like. Great to see the channel so active. Thanks to all ;-))
so cool (pardon the pun). great photography. Thanks for sharing.
Beauty vid guys. There's nothing like skating on pond/lake ice. The speed you can generate is unreal compared to an indoor arena. Cheers from Newfoundland!
Nuts…well done boys
Great video. No ice fishing??? No turkey bowling?? Fun anyway.
Excellent content 👌
26:00 "we need to figure out a safe way to do so" A couple pokes. Good enough ! Gone ! lmao Perfect!
Something everyone should experience once. Good video. 👍
Pulk is the scandinavien word for sled
Just awesome guys. I felt like I was skating with you. Well done. Wish I could have done it myself. It doesn't get much more Canadian than that. Cheers
Great video! Live on Lake Huron so I have opportunity to hear the ice - simply incredible! (BUT not as brave as you boys!)
As my father would say:"...you damn knuckleheads!"
That’s unreal. You certainly took advantage of those rare conditions.
So, when and where was this trip? I'm from the Annapolis Valley and very surprised that there is this much ice and snow somewhere in my province.
That was amazing for sure. thx guys
Great video! How long are the blades on Dave’s skates?
Should brought a stick and puck..Canadian style👍 Thanks for the share 👊 💥
Wow! awesome video i got a rush just watching you guys and hearing the sound of the ice cracking "go faster i,m thinking" lol :-)

the ice at 24:00 is so beautiful. Very fortunate to skate in those conditions.
Aaaah you legends... take me with you!!

Thanks Anyse, sorry for the tricks - this was filmed last season
Do you know any lakes like this in Ontario?
I WAS ON THE EDGE OF MY FREAKING SEAT FOR ALL THE SKATING!
Stupid question but is this a recent video? 🤔 I live in NB. No snow here yet.
This was filmed last winter. No snow in Nova Scotia yet!
@@NorthernScavenger Got snow this morning lol
Where you at?
@1:51 I woulda seen water, unfrozen, and just turned around. Ya got guts!
Great video, we always keep a throw bag with us. Just incase someone does go threw.
That is a smart idea. We also had one with us, as well as ice picks
Y'all need to get connected with Joel Hornborg from Noreaster Natural Ice!

Glad YOU GUYS ENJOYED , because my heart didnt like it as much as you did 😱 , thanks for the freaking Ice capades video
Just trying to keep you on the edge of your seat :)
Ever thought of canoing accross Baikal in Russia?
Man, you took too many chances.
You might want to use a 8- 10 foot birch pole next time. If you fall in, it could help you get OUT!!!
Hey - Do they sell those harnesses and poles for the sleds on Amazon? If you link to your Amazon shop if you have one)I will buy a set up for my husband for Christmas. We live in the states though - but it would be perfect setup to use going out to our boat access only camp this winter,
Hi Lisa, Dave made this one from material picked up from the local hardware store
Where's the hockey 🏒
Noah, does your momma know what you're doing? Scary, but absolutely beautiful.
NO way, NO how....Beautiful, however.... LOL
Yeah there’s no way that this is this year
Is Pulk not Pull + Pack?
Comments for the ice
Ice loves comments
Jerry!
Jerry looked very cozy snoozing in the tent.
Could you at least try to be more Canadian : )
