So 4.5 years later I followed your rules. Thanks for the tube. I successfully set my osmo action for daytime riding with a different setting for night time riding, with excellent results. I'd say Osmo has probably improved the camera, but still, your step-by-step tube shows outcomes best
beautifully done... One of the best tutorial classes regarding osmo pocket I have ever found in internet... you should be a teacher... proud of you man... stay healthy
Fantastic guys I've been lookin everywhere for someone to explain the Osmo+ camera setting finally I now have an understanding of how the camera settings work Great job !
came across your channel tonight. immediately subbed. you two are an incredible team, and the knowledge you're passing on is invaluable! keep up the stellar work!!!
I love your videos. I have not purchased an Osmo yet, but I am watching all your videos and getting so much valuable information. Once I make the purchase, thanks to your videos I won't have to spend a bunch of time trying to figure stuff out on my own and probably getting frustrated...LOL. Please continue these Great informational videos they are the best on all of TH-cam!! Take Care.
great video, man. Thanks! PS - your kid is a doll. Very cute! I have two of my own. Keep up the good work man. There are not many people out there making informative and well done vids like yours on such a specific topic. Thanks again!!
Great video. I like the technical info too. I just purchased my Osmo and am starting to get used to it. Your info is very helpful. Thanks for producing these videos!
Great job on the video. I purchased my Osmo the other day and I'm browsing videos like yours so I can shoot great footage right away without having to learn by trial and error. I especially like that you covered theory and basics! It helped my really understand what was going on instead of just using the setting you recommended at the end. The knockout rounds help practice that theory too so great idea adding that to the video! Keep up the great work! P.S. I personally like 1080 @ 60 fps during parts of my filming with rapid movements to limit blur. I think blur is my biggest pet peeve where as noise appears to be yours. Nonetheless, great video!
Thanks for the video - very helpful to compare someone else's experience of the different settings before I head out shoot some low light footage with my newly bought Osmo Plus!
Great Osmo tips! I really do love how 4K looks, but I believe the other reason to shoot in 2.7K or 1080 is the hardware limitations of the equipment your using. As 4K takes alot of disk space and some processing power. (I think 1080/2.7K would be best to use for people with older PC/Mac hardware) If you have a newer decent rig, by all means use 4K! This way you can also "scale" down to 1080 if you need to also... Please keep up the GREAT Work!
This is the rope a dope answer. Most displays can't handle 4k yet, so they're ALL downed to 1080 anyway. Why eat so much card when you can capture 1080 or 2.7k to start with. I would use 4k to recompose tho. It would also make your lens look longer.
Thumbs up for the video being shot in MK! I'm from MK but live in China, and was excited to see The Hub and Xscape - haven't seen them for a few years! Also, I guess I should mention that your OSMO video is excellent, thoroughly enjoyed it! I'm gonna take mine out this evening and try your recommendations! Cheers! Also, I'm surprised you didn't get stopped for filming in Xscape! I've been stopped for using a DSLR in there before...
Good Point! I guess it'll be a question of whether you're after slower motion or higher resolution. In hindsight, I should have actually shot and compared at 1080p so we have a reference to look at, before knocking it out in the first second of the first round. will do so in upcoming videos!
Dear brother! thank you very much, I have never watched such a brilliant explanation so thumbs up for you and your fantastic explanation. I have subscribed to your channel and thank you once again for this great effort. Stay blessed brother
I want to add I more thing. Shooting with d-link color mode will give you more exposure than a normal mode. You can decrease your iso more while shooting in flat color profile. So shooting in flat color will give you more exposure in lower iso.
More languages, more oportunities for her in the future. Thanks again for the class on ISO / Shutter speed, I'll apply that to my drone flights, I was a bit clueless and unhappy with my videos ;)
This was a brilliant video. I learned a great deal. You should be a teacher. (Maybe you are.) I'm trying to come up with good settings for shooting interior real estate videos. This has been very helpful. Thank you very much.
I think the best way to use fast shutter speed is when filming something like a car chase or fight scene, it give the film a choppy look and exaggerates the sense of speed.
one of the best tutorials as always.highly recommended.. thanks.. i always follow your instructions.. but i wanted to know if we can use the LUT you provide for free with the manual settings you instructed on this video. will it be a good option? thanks again
Thanks and you're welcome! You can definitely use an appropriate LUT to color grade your Low Light DJI footage to any style you're after. The Free LUT we provide works best in conditions similar to the demo video (bright outdoor sunny / overcast weather) but our more comprehensive LUT packs will cater for most situations, including low light: here's an example of a color grade of the same footage from this video, color graded using the "Warm Sun" Lut from the Everest Pack : www.dropbox.com/s/970kqp4bgilfovv/04_4K_ISO800_SHTR_25.00_00_20_14.Still003.jpg?dl=0 You can check out the Everest Packs at osmotips.com/everest.
What would be awesome is a video of a few shoots where the beginners would just keep it on auto setting and and then show what one could change settings to and how same shot improves. Please make this
personally i think you missed the point why people still shoot @1080 rather than 4k and that is = ( file sizes ) this can often be very large and slow to edit and upload not everyone who produces video wants large files for many reasons storage of the files for 1, slower render times etc etc it would have been nice to have had a 1080 comparison i have many 4k cameras but rarely do i set them at 4k for youtube videos
But the bad thing about 4k25 iso 800 is the object frame is blur when you moving the camera to right or left. Maybe you should increase it to 4K30 iso 800? Or the best is using lighting for 4k60 iso 800?
Round one letdown. I wanted to see a test. My Osmo action has more definition for some reason(vloging) in 1080p(Noticeable more definition in my face). 4k much softer. Thanks for the video. Big help
The reason I shoot in lower resolution when not required is to keep video file size small which is easy to port, less card size hungry and easy to trim for short extractions. The lower ISO at night is obviously cleaner where buildings don't have noise and you can read hoarding board signs. But it depends on what you want to use the clip for. If your objective is to be able to read the signs then yes that is true but if you want to show other things like presence of building, better silhouettes of people walking round, the overall place then ISO 3200 is doing pretty good job.
Thank you for the helpful video. Which settings would you recommend for using the camera from a aircraft flying at an 115mp? altitude of 1000-2000ft, at about
Nice video and very well explained for the osmo I have a phantom 3 pro and i use 4k most of the time and i don't recall filming more then 15 minutes and don't think I will be filming with the osmo more then a few minutes to 12 minutes. I know 4k eats a lot os space on the CD card it's why i got 64 gig card and when i do the post production often i do a lot of cuts in the footage which leaves the footage not too huge.
This is a very good vid , however , it depends on what the focus of attention is and what you are trying to get .. The explaination of the settings and why is good .. On the iso 800 / 1/50th is good for the static view , however , catching people ,it is too dark. Good for the static elements. Still ,over all a good "starting point for those with no video / photography Knowledge. Thanks
Hi. Thanks you for these video. I Just purchased my OSMO and all accessories that comes in. Only the bike mount that i haven't purchased. I have purchased the Osmo for Shooting Professional Video for Movie and Professional Music video. My first question: Can i shoot professional footage of Hight quality movie like Hollywood? I'am from Mauritius Island. Thanks a Lot and waiting for you respond.
You can shoot anything with the osmo. Shooting "professional video" is not determined by the equipment but rather by your skills, creativity and how you use the footage. There are parts of oscar winning documentaries that were shot on an iphone, just to prove this point . Searching for Sugar Man is one such oscar winning documentary.
Would you alter those settings for doing a time lapse? Especially in regards to the stars? What would you set your camera to if trying to capture a meteor shower?
They make the zenmuse x5 which is a micro four thirds sensor so will be a bit better in low light but these cameras are not really built for low light performance
Thanks a lot. Very nice tuto like always I would like to make a night lapse with stars and moon. What is the best way please ? How many secondes/frame, ISO, Shutter ? Thanks
Hello, My experience. For 2 or 3 days days there is the stars night. So I tried tonight a nightlapse 1600 iso and 25 shutter, 1 shot every 5 second And... Nothing. Black. The sky was clean. I am in Martinique FWI. Sorry for my english....
No problem with your English! Try to use a longer shutter speed so you are letting in as much light as possible. Since this is a photo at night, you can even try shutter speed of 1 second or even 2 seconds. After each trial check your images and you'll soon see a setting that gives acceptable exposure of the stars
Very very informative, Thank you - A new subscriber- I just got Osmo Pocket and looking for tips how to use to get best pictures or video . Please refer more clips that i can learn more - Greatly appreciate
Hi and thank you very much for the information you gave in this video. I wanted to always ask you for advice about low light. I have to do night shots and then turn them into slow motion, so I should shoot at 60fps, could you tell me the best settings in this case, since at 60fps you can't record super fine and the quality is really poor?
Thanks for this test video very informative, one thing that I'm wondering about is the kind of sharpness/resolution pulsing in the section where the cars are driving past, do you know what is causing that?
Interesting question! What's the video timeline reference so we can take a look and see which of the shutter speed settings we were using when this happens. Thanks!
Yes it's in the Shutter Speed Theory part at 04:36 - 09:00, in fact its apparent in all of the various ISO/Shutter settings in this part (except for the freeze frames of course). Regards Ian
Thanks Ian. I've looked at the original footage and there's none of the pulsing. Also, in adobe premiere, when I play it back in the the program monitor, again there's no visible pulsing. However the rendered file is where I now also notice the pulse you've identified. As this was a huge file (25 minutes of 4K ) I was limited to use a render bitrate of 10 Mbps in a bid to achieve a manageable file size to upload to TH-cam (1.5GB). So my guess is the lower bitrate is what's causing the pulse. Good observation! and maybe someone in our Osmo Tips world can advise the best render settings for 4K TH-cam of up to 30 minutes?? Guys - feel free to leave your comments /suggestions!
Your welcome Brian, I'm just relieved it's not in the original footag, because I've just received my Osmo last week and was starting to sweat a bit ;o), I've done quite a bit of file converting, mainly in HD where 10Mbps is normally quite sufficient, (I take it you exported direct from PP and not from Adobe Media Encoder?) I'll do some tests myself in 4K / Apple Compressor / PP and let you know. Also I've just received a set of Neewer filters, UV, Polar, ND16 and a variable ND I'll be testing those out at the same time
I did a couple of test and found out something interesting, the "pulsing" only appears in NTSC!! PAL is quite soft at 4096 I'll try it also at 3840 www.dropbox.com/sh/lrpiw4uhrf07qc4/AACruk0gjP-hAOKgaofbkXYNa?dl=0
You are ruling out 1080 without trying it. Have you thought about comparing it for quality, since 1080 has less information in the same bandwith? I've had some issues in 4K that I could get rid of at 1080 in dark shooting situations.
Thanks for your comment. I actually did try it (not just on the osmo, but on so many cameras that offer 4K as an option). I just didnt show the comparison it in this particular video as the difference in resolution detail was striking. The 1080p images look mushy and most details crushed, compared to 4K. It'd be interesting to get more details on the issue you had. Was this a resolution related issue? as this was the basis for my knocking out 1080p. But remember everything comes down to personal taste!
Buy a better camera with better shallow depth of field trust me I own the osmo pocket and although I love this little camera it just can't do much in the dof .
Hi, you sad that the best quality video size is 4k. my question is about the exportation of the shoot... do you re-compress in 1920x1080p? thanks for answer. Ciao Marco
You can either create the video as 4K or produce it as 1080p, and then you can zoom in and pan your 4K footage into a 1080p frame without losing quality, so this allows you to have more flexibility in editing.
We've only ever used DJI Osmo Intelligent Batteries as all alternatives (Smartree) we've seen are at most £2 or £3 cheaper and for such a small difference, we prefer to stick with the brand we know but that's not to say there aren't any good alternatives. we just haven't tested them. You can never have too many batteries but we get on fine with a total of 3 DJI Osmo Intelligent Batteries, for most of our shooting .
Hi DJI When I shoot in the light of day, I have a problem that has to keep IsO 100 and have to keep the shutter speed 200,300,350 as the visual burns during the day
great tips, thanks for posting. I've been tempted to buy one of these but every bit of footage I've seen has terrible focus problems, except for a very limited range, about 1m + everything else is 'soft'. I couldn't even drop it into a 1080 timeline alongside my HD footage, it looks poor. No problem if it;s all sand, sea and turf or cityscapes but if people are important elements in the foreground it's nit acceptable. Doesn't matter what the res is, if it's not in focus it l;ooks bad beside focused 1080 footage.
The focus distance of the Osmo is 1.5 m to infinity so not really good for selfie type shots. The Osmo+ however focusses from a much closer distance of 0.5m so this might be better suited for selfie type shots.
Rubbish. Image quality has nothing to do with memory card. This was shot on a DJI Osmo in 4K. Don’t compare 4K then to 4K now. Sensors have changed . Technology has changed. Do your research before coming up with stupid comments like this .
So 4.5 years later I followed your rules. Thanks for the tube. I successfully set my osmo action for daytime riding with a different setting for night time riding, with excellent results. I'd say Osmo has probably improved the camera, but still, your step-by-step tube shows outcomes best

I just purchased an action 3 and this lesson has been very informative 👍🏾 thanks
Very slick showing the ISOs like that.
Good stuff. Awesome host in the beginning and end.

Thanks for the video - very helpful to compare someone else's experience of the different settings before I head out shoot some low light footage with my newly bought Osmo Plus!
Thank you for this great introduction to filming with the Osmo in low light conditions.
been watching your videos a lot lately! you both do a great job!

Will overheat the Osmo on 4k for more than 20 minutes and also will reduce the battery power? Thank you for such great tips.
This is the rope a dope answer. Most displays can't handle 4k yet, so they're ALL downed to 1080 anyway. Why eat so much card when you can capture 1080 or 2.7k to start with. I would use 4k to recompose tho. It would also make your lens look longer.

It's the great tips. Thanks for sharing valuable video. :)
I'm very late to the party for the Osmo and I found this very helpful. Thanks :)
Thumbs up for the video being shot in MK! I'm from MK but live in China, and was excited to see The Hub and Xscape - haven't seen them for a few years! Thanks Shane, good luck with the night shooting. MK's looking good still!
Love your guys videos! They are very helpful
welcome!
There is one good reason to use 1080p: A higher framerate that allow for slow motion. Probably not the best idea for low light conditions however ^^
Good Point! I guess it'll be a question of whether you're after slower motion or higher resolution. In hindsight, I should have actually shot and compared at 1080p so we have a reference to look at, before knocking it out in the first second of the first round. will do so in upcoming videos!
Well done, great help for upcoming High School Reunion!
awesome. hope the reunion went well!
Thanks, good video and worked great this morning.
Best Video ever... thank you so much for this information :)
Lol, I liked the video and the final 'au revoir' made me leave a comment ;)
She loves languages!
More languages, more oportunities for her in the future. Thanks again for the class on ISO / Shutter speed, I'll apply that to my drone flights, I was a bit clueless and unhappy with my videos ;)
GREAT video. I have the Osmo plus but will use this as a guide!
This was a brilliant video. I learned a great deal. You should be a teacher. (Maybe you are.) I'm trying to come up with good settings for shooting interior real estate videos. This has been very helpful. Thank you very much.
BIG BRAVO for video! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I think the best way to use fast shutter speed is when filming something like a car chase or fight scene, it give the film a choppy look and exaggerates the sense of speed.
Great example !
Yep!!
blur using a slower shutter give the feeling of faster motion...
I'm confused. Is it faster shutter speed or slower shutter speed that makes action scenes look better? Are you referring to more blur?
This is really informative. Thanks.
No worries!
Very helpful video... Thank you!
one of the best tutorials as always.highly recommended.. thanks.. i always follow your instructions.. but i wanted to know if we can use the LUT you provide for free with the manual settings you instructed on this video. will it be a good option? thanks again
Thanks and you're welcome! You can definitely use an appropriate LUT to color grade your Low Light DJI footage to any style you're after. The Free LUT we provide works best in conditions similar to the demo video (bright outdoor sunny / overcast weather) but our more comprehensive LUT packs will cater for most situations, including low light: here's an example of a color grade of the same footage from this video, color graded using the "Warm Sun" Lut from the Everest Pack : www.dropbox.com/s/970kqp4bgilfovv/04_4K_ISO800_SHTR_25.00_00_20_14.Still003.jpg?dl=0

personally i think you missed the point why people still shoot @1080 rather than 4k and that is = ( file sizes ) this can often be very large and slow to edit and upload not everyone who produces video wants large files for many reasons storage of the files for 1, slower render times etc etc it would have been nice to have had a 1080 comparison i have many 4k cameras but rarely do i set them at 4k for youtube videos
point taken and accepted!
Thank God i found this channel! just purchased my dji osmo + and everything looks blurry
hope this has helped
But the bad thing about 4k25 iso 800 is the object frame is blur when you moving the camera to right or left. Maybe you should increase it to 4K30 iso 800? Or the best is using lighting for 4k60 iso 800?

good and fair points all round!
Good review! I'm sold to the Osmo!
Good on you. You'll enjoy using it.
Hi, could you do another video like this for daylight settings? maybe cloudy and sunny? many thanks 👍😊
Thank you for the helpful video.
Which settings would you recommend for using the camera from a aircraft flying at an
115mp? altitude of 1000-2000ft, at about
The reason you might want to shoot in 1080p over 4k is because sometimes you need to use 60 or 120 fps which is unavailable in 4k on the osmo.
yup
and for storing capacity! XD
There was so much noise in the bottom left with iso 800
Very well spoken
Woooooo excelente video. Saludos desde México.
Great tutorial .. And in which software you used to edit ? Premiere Pro CC is good for DJI editing ?
Premiere is fine for editing the Osmo footage
Yes , this was edited in Adobe PP
1080p works for me , cos the massive file size takes forever on my i5 laptop , of a 4K file , but thanks for the video Shane uk 🇬🇧
Great stuff 👍🏾
Great video, you could have experimented with the D-Cinelike as well
Brilliant video thank you
Thanks David!
Love it Brain thank you and Nyascha
Nice video and very well explained for the osmo I have a phantom 3 pro and i use 4k most of the time and i don't recall filming more then 15 minutes and don't think I will be filming with the osmo more then a few minutes to 12 minutes. great! thanks for sharing your workflow
Thanks
EXCELLENT INFORMATION!!
Great tips thank u! Awesome work. Any suggestions on a shutter speed for 800iso 30 fps?
if you shooting NTSC, that will work as well.
Hi. Thanks you for these video. I Just purchased my OSMO and all accessories that comes in. Only the bike mount that i haven't purchased. You can shoot anything with the osmo. Shooting "professional video" is not determined by the equipment but rather by your skills, creativity and how you use the footage. They make the zenmuse x5 which is a micro four thirds sensor so will be a bit better in low light but these cameras are not really built for low light performance

PAL is quite soft at 4096 I'll try it also at 3840

Hi, what are best settings for filming myself outside..so I’m in focus and the background is blurred, and the colour looks bright? Thanks
Thanks man!
Osmo Tips,Could you share us the best batteries for Osmo? I'm trying to get extra batteries
Hi DJI
When I shoot in the light of day, I have a problem that has to keep IsO 100 and have to keep the shutter speed 200,300,350 as the visual burns during the day
we are not DJI! Just fans of The Osmo but do look out for and watch our video th-cam.com/video/3GKamr8kRaw/w-d-xo.html
What about the white balance.how much it should be
Will these settings work for Pocket 2?
Hi Could You share me the link of the California Dreaming Remix yo used at the end, it's AWSOME.
great tips, thanks for posting.
Thank you
what memory card you using? footage looks terrible, no where near 4k
Rubbish. Image quality has nothing to do with memory card. This was shot on a DJI Osmo in 4K. Don’t compare 4K then to 4K now. Sensors have changed . Technology has changed. Do your research before coming up with stupid comments like this .
So random but I live in Missoula, MT which is the place the B&G @ 20:21 is named after.
oh what a coincidence! good bit of trivia!
+Osmo Tips really appreciate the videos. My osmo comes in Thursday and it's been nice preparing watching your channel.
Great stuff and good luck and enjoy the osmo!
helpfull... thanks
I just shoot some footage at night in Berlin City. Have a Look and see what is possible with DJI Oslo and Mavic in Low Light.
If you want to have smooth slow motion you will have to shoot in 1080p as the OSMO pocket cannot do 60fps in 4K
