I found here the superb explanation of how four basic ND OSMO filters work. Thanks a lot. Could not get that info from numerous talking heads on TH-cam who generalized about ND filters without giving a clear description of why the filters have numbers and what effect each one of them produces. Thanks again
as always, you guys are unique in giving details about the Osmo here on youtube.i learnt a lot about it,thanks to you. Good luck..i vote for the customisation of the osmo gimbal movement setting
This is very educative video. I am in initial stages to learn OSMO+, and I am impressed with this video, giving technical details in very simple and understandable Thanks!!
Thank you so much for this video! Just got an osmo and this has helped so much with deciding on filters and understanding why they are needed. I feel like I've learned so much, thank you - Emma
Thank you, this video is extremely helpful. Especially if, like myself do not know how to use the ND filters and or the settings on the OSMOS to get the great shots.
Don’t worry about the haters. At least you try to give back to the social community where others are purely takers and haters. Carry-on the good work thumbs up
Thank you very much for making such a great video, Very well explained and the graphics are well laid out. This is by far the best ND filter tutorial that I have found on TH-cam. Any chance that you may start making Aerial Photography videos? Your presentation was very easy to understand!
+Alan Alicante thanks a lot! I have been eying the Mavic Pro as my possible introduction to aerial photo/video. It looks like a good entry point - so watch the space!
I wish to purchase a new Variable ND filter for my osmo + (zenmuse X3 Zoom). I imagine that filters come in different sizes to match each device, camera, etc. I cannot find exact information on the size of the filter I need for the osmo + expect that the diameter is 35.8 mm. Can you please shed some light on this? Even learned that the x3 vs x3 zoom have a slight difference in size. Would highly appreciate it. Thank you in advance and thank you for you excellent tutorial.
Another great and informative video, I got some DJI filters when I order my OSMO and each one doesn't have any form of description of what it is other than what was written on the outer packaging card (Which was binned before knowing what it was..... Silly me.) My vote for next video is Option 1, Gimbal Movement settings. Great presentation. :) One question. Where in the UK can I order the PolarPro Filters ?. AmazonUK pricing is far high than that of the Manufactures shop.
Thanks Ian. I don't blame you at all...lol ! DJI should have labelled each filter. It's quite easy and necessary to end up with a pocket full of these little filter guys and you quickly want to slap one on, based on your judgment on how many stops you require etc. I also struggled to find a competitive price in the UK for polar Pro but I found this online shop, based in France but delivery is 3 days to the UK and 100% totally reliable. I buy most DJI stuff from them as delivery is free! and prices are pretty good. They do tend to go through their stock quite fast, so it sometimes depends on stock availabilty ,....but they're worth looking at. shop.epictv.com/en/dji-accessories/polar-pro/polar-pro-dji-inspire-1-filter-3-pack
Great video. Is there problems with the sync on the external mic and the footage. Some reviews are saying it's a problem. Could you please let me know, as I intend buying the DJI osmo + in March. Would you recommend the osmo for vlogs. Thank you.
Just a question on focus for close up footage of flowers, it seems to be an issue, as I am at odds to get focus on close up. It seems to favour the distant detail and off-sets the focus to distant subject matter. Just a little advice on how best to focus with touch focus. Thanking you in advance. Love your detailed info .....
No problem! Good Question. I found this product drawing from the DJI osmo forum: forum1.djicdn.com/data/attachment/forum/201604/26/103349kd555v26agwdahkd.jpg. Hope this helps!
Greetings from germany. I bought osmo with z3 and also use adobe cc. it was very good that you show m the lumic in premiere pro. i will by ND Filters. Thanks a lot. I understand everything. Good Intro too with the girl. One more question: where do you gut your music for your movies?
#Osmo Tips what is the reference # for the ND filters for Polar pro? Or do you still have the link where these can be purchased from? Thnx! Great video.... ty for the insights!
Dude, you are rocking my world with your wealth of information about the photography process in the use of the Osmo. But even better, you enlightened me to the Lumetri Color effects in Premier Pro! What a revelation! I'm a real estate photographer new to video and have been struggling with Premier Pro to make basic adjustments to exposure, white balance, temperature, etc like I do in Adobe Lightroom with my photos. Now I see that they're almost identical controls. Where have you been all my life!! Thanks a million pounds Osmo Tips! Your newly subscribed fan from America. Greg www.homephotoprorep.com
Thanks John. DJI Go App then Click the Gear Icon and then click Camera and scroll down until you see the "Over Exposure Warning" and simply slide the slider to switch it on. Enjoy !
No luck. Nothing on the gear (camera) icon. I can only find the histogram on the non-gear camera icon. Which version are you using? A tip: when adjusting a variable grey filter, hold the filter with a lens cloth. No more finger prints on the filter. A request: does anyone know of a lens cap which fits an attached filter?
Not the camera icon. You first click the gear icon (bottom right hand corner) then select camera and only then should you scroll to the "Over Exposure Setting" Am using version 1.6.2.10 on iOS
Hi, great videos! Good to learn a bit more on the OSMO! :) I checked polar pro's website and they have a pack of filters coupling ND and PL, the cinema ones. I'm wondering what they are worth, the combo seems quite nice. Do you think that a simple ND is fine or that the combo might bring some nice videos? Cheers :)
I know what you mean. That polar pro shop is like a candy store for a kid for me! I'd love to have or at least try the cinematic filters as they look absolutely gorgeous. My experience with polar pro is their filters work great
+Osmo Tips only problem is that they are hard to get in Europe without paying a big price on shipping and wait 3 weeks to get them. I'm thinking of getting the dji ones nd8 and nd16
I know. I eventually got my latest one from Amazon UK, just by chance, and didn't have to pay shipping but had to wait like 7 days for it to arrive. I've also seen some on eBay. Just be very sure its polar pro original.
I vote 1, iget my filter pl 8 and 16 sone, i let you know whits one is the best for me (sorry for my english) i'm from the nederlands. I love your channel.
Do you know what the weight is of the DJI ND8 and ND16 filters on the DJI store? I read some reviews that the PolarPro ones might be too heavy for the camera?
Not sure how much the DJI filters weigh but I have tested and use Polar Pro filters extensively and at between 5 and 7g, they have not affected the osmo camera or gimbal in any way.
+Mary Kay Ulsamer yes, these LUTs do work for Final Cut as well. The only thing you would need is a LUT utility which is essentially a LUT loader. Full instructions and links to related videos are included as part of the pack.
Yes mostly because I do like to tweak and color correct my footage rather than let the camera do it for me. If its for LIVE FB or YT, then I'll choose one of the presets or natural as there's no point in d-log for live broadcasts
But what is the millimeter size of the filter? Why is it so difficult to find this information? How can one make sure they are buying the correct filter without knowing the size?!
How do I fix the exposure in dji osmo everything is coming out over exposed. My settings is 4k 24fps Iso 200. Shutter speed 1/50 it's fine in doors but once the light hit it. You can't even see anything. But with the default settings it works fine. But I don't want to stick to default it's does not give that film look
In bright sunlight, you need to use ND filters that cut out the amount of light and enable you to maintain the ISO and Shutter speed you need. If you watch the whole video above, it covers how to achieve this.
I appreciate that I did watch the whole video but was confused because shouldn't have to put a lens or a lot post work to adjust the exposure for the price and this kind of camera. Specially when it works fine on default. They give you everything else manually to use why wouldn't they add exposure to adjust just doesn't make sense and a lot of lens takes away the quality of the the picture.
Every camera needs an ND filter and post-production editing to look "cinematic" when shot outdoors... You should always keep ISO low, aperture wide open, white balance check to something purely white, and try to keep your shutter speed at 2 xs your frame rate.
I love this channel!!!! Very informative episode. I have shared your channel on my facebook numerous times, but recently discovered a page on there facebook.com/groups/djiosmo/ I vote OPTION 1 Thanks very much
Forgive me for sounding rather dumb, so what size are the filters of the osmo. This information seems to be overlooked in the great majority of videos posted on TH-cam. I do not own any of the drones.:)
Nothing dumb about your question. the dimensions are shown on this diagram here: forum1.djicdn.com/data/attachment/forum/201604/26/103349kd555v26agwdahkd.jpg but its almost always referred to as an ND Filter for the inspire 1 Xenmuse X3 Camera or simply DJI Osmo ND Filter. Rather use the type of camera as opposed to dimensions to be sure you're getting the right filter. Any manufacturer of these filters will most likely refer to the cameras above as it's such a specialist filter.
My DJI Osmo with no ND filter never looked that over exposed in auto mode. Even on a bright sunny beach. Then you show the DJI Osmo with an ND* and it was still over-exposed. And with the ND8 and ND16 you show no color cast. I like most of your videos, but your examples are fakes.
+Richard's World what exactly would I gain by showing you fakes? Just because you do not completely understand the exposure triangle doesn't give you the right to troll me on my own channel. The reason your footage in auto mode, on a sunny beach seems, acceptable to you is because the camera has selected close to 1/1000 sec shutter speed or even higher and if you don't know what effect that has on footage then rather go back to the basics and research it, then learn it , then you understand it and maybe even try it. All my trials and footage are shot in a way to correctly expose the footage in terms of ISO and shutter speed, since aperture is fixed on this cameras. I always aim to achieve a shutter speed of 1/twice the frame rate for my preferred film like motion blur. So before you go and accuse me of being a fake on my own channel, do some research and try and understand the concepts I am trying to share. Of all the close to 7000 subscribers and over half a million views, you are the first person to call me a fake, just because you don't fully understand what I am trying to show. I have no time for people who don't appreciate all the work that goes into creating these videos. What really do I have to gain by showing you fake footage? If you're so good with your osmo without using ND filters why don't you show it instead of just talking ? And if you do decide to show it , do it on your own channel. Mic drop.
Chuck Purnell look closely at the glass, it has ripples in it. try filming something with and without it and look closely at the details (i.e.: leaves, grass, etc.).
Saieash Mohanadas Yes, when you look closely at the coating on the glass, you can see how uneven and wavy its made. Distorting the light as it passes through the glass and softening the image. I use the Polar Pro ND 6 filter set, they provide a sharp image with no distortion or color shift. They cost a lot more ($160.00), but you get professional results that the Neewer filter can't offer. Happy flying!
I bought the neewer multi-coat ND/PL kit for $50. I use the Polar Pro Cinema Shutter Kit as well. Honestly can't tell a difference, even with RAW images. The lower end polar pros and lower end newers without multi-coats will always deliver poor quality. Before you try trash somebody's opinion or experience, ask them what kind of filters they have. You will be more helpful and look more intelligent.

A very useful video. I am going on holiday to Zante (Zakynthos) in August so will now be looking at getting hold of the ND32/PL filter
Absolutely you'll need it ! I just got mine today but its overcast...as usual ...so I'll have to wait a bit to test it.
Very informative! Thank you :)
Thanks, great review!

Hey! What filters would you recommend to be used with the Osmo while filming real estate interiors? Thanks Osmo Tips love the videos!
Hello! Thank you for this useful video. But what size filter can I use with Osmo? How many millimeters should have? 37mm or other?
No problem! Good Question. I found this product drawing from the DJI osmo forum: forum1.djicdn.com/data/attachment/forum/201604/26/103349kd555v26agwdahkd.jpg. Hope this helps!
and also you can refer to it as the zenmuse X3 or Inspire 1 camera filter. It'll fit the same thread.
Are Neewer filters any good? Im hesitating to buy them. Please answer!

my varyable filter is giving me black cicles in the border.... why that? :/
Neewer's are TERRIBLE! They make the video looks fuzzy, I wouldn't recommend it.
I use them on my Phantom 3 Pro and it makes my footage look a lot better when I have them on.
Chuck Purnell look closely at the glass, it has ripples in it. try filming something with and without it and look closely at the details (i.e.: leaves, grass, etc.).
