West hill wagon works are really stepping it up lately, I just bought a load of thejr N gauge detail bits at the Doncaster show. It's great to have someone doing modern reasonably priced stuff!
Hi Richard the scenic coming on well liked the video shot of the rail workers at the box with the trunking all down & the class 26 pulling mk 3 coaches if that's correct coming out the Tunnel that was a great shot. can't wait for end product. Keep the excellent work going 👍.
Great video Richard. I’ve got a bag of chinchilla sand on the back of your video, ballasting hasn’t started here yet, but I’m confident after looking at your work that it should be just fine. Cheers John b 😎
The layout is coming along nicely and is looking good. My grandson is hoping to make a start on his 009 layout when he gets back from his half-term trip with the scouts. Did you catch the latest Dylington Model Railway video he's done, he's tried a bit of stop motion animation on it. Hopefully he'll be able to put updates of his 009 layout on there in the coming month's. Looking forward to seeing your next update. ...cheers James 🙂👍
Layout is coming along nicely just one poo t the ground level roughing is usually laid in the ground and not sitting on top. Not fully buried but up to 50% of the depth. Then again it’s your choice it does look good
Loving the growing scenery; comparing yours with "real life"; in my perambulations around the countryside, I have noticed that typically, the steeper the ground, the more does "nature" take its course by providing space for brambles and other plant life to find foothold. Can you easily find sources for the variety of plant species typically visible.
Hi Richard. Great video and the layout is coming along really well. I’m not sure network rail keep things as neat as you think. I’m a train driver working around Leeds and often see cable trough if with the lids removed/ out of place. Vegetation and line side clutter is also very much in evidence. Budgets are tight and the teams have to work to deadlines. If the possession needs to be handed back tidying up lids are unused / old materials is a low priority. I’m looking forward to seeing how your layout develops. You’re giving me lots of ideas for my own railway
That sand was a great idea, I cannot remember who used a bag of pumis just borrowed a bit of kitchen equipment to wiz it up then sieved it to the right size. 25 kg bag for about a five. Plus the cost of a mad wife.
Hello Richard, from an appearence point of view have you ever considered painting the sleepers for the points white to blend in with the rest of the track. Cheers Greg
You could spray those network rail bags with a matte artists lacquer before filling. Should protect from damp and give a slight sheen that the prototype bags have.
I always look forward to a new video, great stuff as always Richard, also have you ever thought of buying an Australian Model, companies I recommend are Auscision and SDS Models, well known retail stores are train world and Australian Modeller
Hi Richard, I live close to the West Coast Min line, ( Colwich ) . Network Rail are not that good at putting the covers back on. Lived in the village for thirty years and have never seen them put back.
If you do get a dehumidifier, set the humidity at a high level to start and then reduce slowly so as not force dry your scenics and cause cracking. Learn from others mistakes they say😂😂. Cheers
Looks good. I have to echo a couple of comments about NR veg management (or lack of) and the open trough lids. Having walked many miles of NR infrastructure i can verify that the lids are often broken/missing. If you want to make it really realistic, add a cess walkway then drop a few old sleepers or scrap rail on it 😂
Nice Richard. I've bought all the stuff to make a new shelf layout with lots of new techniques for me but I've lost interest in it, so it's just sitting there.
Looking good so far, a small thought would a small heater to take the chill out of the garage work? or if not would clear varnish [model] variety work for your paper bags [scenery].
Hi Richard. I'm trying to get some of the uphill fencing but it's not on West hills website yet. Do you know if it's available or was it just at the open day?? Thanks in advance! Layout is coming along nicely!
good update vid on the channel layout looks good lots gdone on the layout loks good layout is neve do will be add to it all the time nice hills thanks lee
Hey Richard, always love what you do. Completely unrelated but can you remember what colour code you painted the buffers on your main line loco? I have a class 24 that needs silver buffers but I’m yet to find a definitive answer on colour online that I can trust. Thanks in advance 😊
Again, what a great video, well filmed and explained. May I ask a question about the darker colour of your points? Will you be doing anything to bring them into line with the rest of the track? Regards, Eric.
The West Hill trunking looks good. One small point on the raised cabinets (loc cases). Locs at ground level are the easiest and cheapest option in the real world. Raised platforms etc are only generally used where you need a loc case, but can’t fit a ground mounted one due to the terrain. If the terrain slopes up, one of these up-bank platforms is a more cost effective solution than digging it out to fit a ground mounted one. Hope that makes sense (I’m a signal engineer of 30+ years experience).
You are correct with how the fencing is inside as to avoid “ease of climbing” Your heritage line probably wouldn’t have cable trunking it would probably have cabling using telegraph poles and points controlled mechanically by point rodding and signals controlled by wire cables mechanically
I was just wondering about where you have placed your powers junction boxes whether you could put them on the opposite side of the four lines of track so you can add an access route / pathway for the network rail workers to gain access from the road you had the vans located or technically you could keep them where they are now and just add a pathway going off scene. Like I say I was just wondering you've probably already thought it out but not mentioned your plans about it. As you said it is the early stages of the layout and I am liking what I am seeing it is all coming together and looking good I can't wait to see what it will look like in the final stages.. keep up the good work 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I am not sure if I should have videoed from the start of this build or not. Now it looks like a mess with all the locos I have tested and then serviced Which is better than just sitting and looking at them stationary, I am going to have to stop at this point on board one for now as I am having both of my knees replaced and will be out of action for a while, but at least I can run two trains. Nice start to the scenery I have 3D printed my own Fencing, but I am a long way to using any. Martin. (Thailand)
Second part of the video was much better, so maybe just the mixing. Anyway, small issue, Keep up the good work and the layout is coming on really well. Take care
Another good video…
Love the detailing.. the workers at the cabinets, … starting to bring the railway alive.
x The Bigfella x
It’s coming along nicely! ☺️
Thank you! 😊
Nice layout update Richard. Those fences look good painted in the green. Looking forward to the next one.
A very nice update Richard!! Many thanks for sharing. Cheers Onno.
So nice of you as always!
It's a mammoth task!
The juxtaposition between the modern & the heritage lines will add a high degree of interest to the finished job.
Hi Richard.
The main and heritage complement each other brilliantly.
The fence makes all the difference. Great job.
Stay safe.
Pete.
Another great video ready enjoy watching yours and watching how it’s done coming on a treat
More a guide how not to do it aha
Layout looks to be Coming on very well now Richard, some really good work here, keep up the good work.
This is literally a railway layout of my dreams
That is SUCH a cool idea about fence height!
Thanks for the update. The layout is coming together very nicely. Liked and Subbed! Cheers, Andy
Great video as always Richard, nice update as well with your ideas for further lineside detailing.
James
Brilliant update, Richard them westhillwagonworks bits look awesome. Look forward to the next one👍👍👍👍👍
All looking good and beginning to look very realistic.
Thanks! Getting there now
Like the ballast bags, nice touch on the trackside. If you give them a couple of voats of Matt varnish it should nullify any damp issues.
Such simple details make a huge difference and improvement
Your patience and dedication is impressive!!
a great deal of thought has gone into your layout Richard and its coming along a treat 👍👍

Thanks Richard, looking better all the time ....
Thanks 👍
Love seeing the progress. Keep the videos coming :)
I would love a 40/50 minute video of you going over your entire collection!
Ha, it's not that big to be fair, a few HSTs and 91 sets and that's your lot 😁
@@NewJunction I’d still love a video, no matter the length. You show the engine/train and how you feel about said model. Maybe some buyer advice

Looking good 😁
Hahaha, network rail taking more care of vegetation, funny. As a train driver that really amused me
Looking great mate can't wait for the next download thanks

Looking good. I wouldn’t put the fences in until all the ballast is complete. Elbows will take some fences down.
Starting to look really impressive and given me great inspiration and some good ideas for my own baseboard construction
Great to hear!
Love the two tier of the layout giving two distinct scenes in one@@NewJunction

Nice details. Figured your track worker was dead, since he didn't get up even when the train roared by, but he was back up by the end of the video.

Coming soon!
This is looking fantastic mate, really coming along nicely, and a fair bit quicker than my layout 😂
Looking good
Thank you! Cheers!
Brilliant updates, I don't have a problem with the sound though.
Hi Richard. I’m not a modeller but find your videos relaxing. Some of the train noise was loud but only maybe 20%.
That sand was a great idea, I cannot remember who used a bag of pumis just borrowed a bit of kitchen equipment to wiz it up then sieved it to the right size. 25 kg bag for about a five. Plus the cost of a mad wife.

Looking forward to it!

Starting to take shape...
All starting to come together boss, although I think the Network Rail S&T bloke need helps just laying there🤪
He can stay there! Wouldn't stand up would he! 😅
Invest in a small dehumidifier (£100 approx) helps your drying time and keeps your layout from being damp.
Cheers Andy

It’s coming on a treat mate ,sorry about patrion I’ll sort it later don’t know what happened ,take care mate
Mark 😊😊
No fear chap! ❤
Looks fab, but please sort out the derailing issue :D
Another great update Richard.
Can I ask where do you buy that alternative ballast from? It looks great and it's cheap.
Cheers Phil.
Great stuff. Can you tell me where you obtained your glass fronted cabinets from please?

It may have sold out, best bets to.contact them directly 😊
with all this new stuff going down on the baseboards does it all line up when the model railway is in exhibition mode?
Yes 😊
@@NewJunction very well done
Hi Richard,
Great video. Where did you say you got the gable wall thingys from?
Thx!
Came from the Railnuts who are making Making Tracks.
good update vid on the channel layout looks good lots gdone on the layout loks good layout is neve do will be add to it all the time nice hills thanks lee
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Richard, what era are you working ? Would it really have all this fencing
Great progress.
I noticed some ballast in the middle of tracks, they may look good in the middle of the tunnel portals!
Still A working in progress

No, they'll be blended in etc in time with weathering but the are wooden sleeper like sone of the real network 😊
@@NewJunction I guessed that would be the case...

Very good point, I'll have to remedy that!
Still no sign of the new style fence at WH
Worth asking them?
Maybe put a hattons original Andrew Barclay shunting a wagon or two in that yard on the heritage line
Ha! If only I knew someone...

The orange pipes are no longer authorised for use, hollow bearers are today's choice of cable route.
Yep, They were when the layout was set mind 😂

Richard, love the videos but please don't run the trains when you are talking, or get a lapel mic. The sound is very distracting to your commentary.
The irony I was wearing one for this video 😆
Second part of the video was much better, so maybe just the mixing. Anyway, small issue, Keep up the good work and the layout is coming on really well. Take care
@@NewJunction When you wear it it's fine, when you had it placed on the baseboard is when the volume of the trains gets a bit high.
