    And also what type of force? I read my last comment. Sorry about the flaring question again. To hold the cup in from the force. The injector helps hold the cup in place. I'm sorry for the silly questions. I'm not a mechanic. Thanks again

    Thanks again for your video. What exactly does the reaming tool do? And the reason for the flaring. Is to seal the cup yes? Thanks again

    How often do you do cups. I a machinist and the tools I have a bit different then the one your using they are Detroit originals that's I got from an older machinist. I often get other machine shops series 60s because many of theirs cups fail I also pressure test mine so if one leaks I usually catch it.I do marine and over the applications. And I have yet to get one warranty claim knock on wood lol

      @poet99999  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Due to the application at that shop, it was likely higher frequency. We had some last the full 10,000hr head life some substantially less.
      In a straight diesel application I'm sure they would normally last the 10k the mark

    Thank u for the info. U explain things very well. I'm about to pull my head and send it to the machine shop. I do have a question. Why is it? That they don't make a flaring tool for the 60 series? Instead of having to pull the entire head. I see a lot of videos on the old Volvo 2005 and a little older12 series I think? Where they can install the cups with a simple flaring tool. Without pulling the head. Is it because on this Detroit series? It has to be completely flat to the fire deck? I appreciate any feedback. Thanks again

      The next generation Detroit head had thread in cups. These n2's are quite old now days. I'd have to pull my books but I do believe the n3 and up were threaded cups and silver in color

    • @poet99999
      @poet99999  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the n2 style the flare is what was creating the holding force for the cup, the next up the threads held them in.

      @@poet99999 Thank u for the response. It's just crazy that the Volvo D12 has copper flare type cups. And they can be installed with a flaring tool. With the head still on. I guess Volvo engineers are smarter? Or cared enough about the owner? To not have the head removed every time u had a cup problem. Thanks again

    Great information on this video. I bought a new cylinder head that already has cups in them. Does it require any reaming?

    • @poet99999
      @poet99999  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Blandino it should not require anything. if the machine shop/rebuilder you bought it from installed them they will have done all of this. infact this is usually done by a head shop anyway as most end users will want to have their valves checked at the same time

    • @alexanderelrod8932
      @alexanderelrod8932 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They require reaming to set the install height or you will not be able to set your injector height correctly... Used to slam dunk these all the time back in the day..

    Can be replaced injector cups this days without removing the head.?

    • @poet99999
      @poet99999  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the style head. If its the N2 head then it needs to be removed. The newer generation heads have threaded cups

      so the original kit number is J-33880. there is an aftermarket kit that comes up with that same part number from freedomracing. i do not know if this will work or not, best call them and find outl the OE tool kit for N2 heads is LONG out of production and is upward of $3k if you can find it.
      trying googling J-33880 and see if that aftermarket kit will work out for you

    • @poet99999
      @poet99999  ปีที่แล้ว

      n3 started in 2004, so knowing the build date of your engine will help.
      When you pull the valve cover take note of the injector body. If it has a cube attached to the injector with two wires that is likely the n2, i BELIEVE all n3 injectors did not have this cube attached to the body.
      Google an image of "Detroit 60 n2 vs n3 injectors" that should help you identify

    Were leaking cups very common on the 12.7?

      Iirc the n2 injector has a square body electro magnet (two wires) that is parallel with the injector body. The n3 has a 45deg (plastic plug)

      The n2 cups require the head to be removed. They are pressed and swedged in, not threades

    Companies aren't selling the tools for that anymore because most companies that are doing engine rebuilds just get a reman head from detroit. Saves time and money.

    • @poet99999
      @poet99999  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      unfortunately it does not save time and money for all. we use ours to power electrical generators. doing head recups inhouse saves us a ton of time and money... ... something ill mention at my next employee review ;)
      our local head shop demanded full rebuild when we wanted cups done, and they were always 3 week at least for lead time. now these get done in two days, first day for head removal, tear down, inhouse pressure test and inspection, next day cup swap, then re install on engine.
