Thanks man. I just bought a 2004 230 SX and it was killing me that I was still moving forward while in Neutral. I will definitely be checking this out next time I have it on the trailer.
Hi Captain. I’m buying my first boat as soon as the next 2021 AR190 arrives in the Dallas area. Have the deposit down and thanks to you I feel ready to go. Seriously your videos are amazing. I cannot wait to do my own maintenance and all of the things that you taught me in great detail. Thank you. Also very funny and likable.
Another great video. Entertaining with many good tips for Yamaha jet boat owners. Seriously looking at a Yamaha jet boat. I like the dual consoles the grandson likes the center consoles. Saving your videos for future use.
Love the video and just what I need to do to avoid continually feathering the throttles of my 242LS. I would love to see videos on tightening the throttle levers at the console (1 is stiff and the other is loose resulting in unbalanced RPM's) and a video on how to balance the throttles at any given set point when using a throttle lock (mine are ~500 rpms off from each other).
Another great video, Capt Leon! Sounds like you and Capt Ken need to move down south... or out here to SoCal where boating season literally never ends.
Around the intake grate I also have gaps that collects sea grass in Florida. Question can I use 4200 instead of 5200 so it’s removable if I ever have to take of the grate? Not sure if 4200 will last in salt water since it’s under the waterline? My boat is stored in dry storage at my marina so it is only exposed when I take the boat out for the day then put away.
Donny, no silicone will stop you from removing the part, I know they say it’s permanent, but it comes off. Never used 4200, probably just less binding.
How or can you adjust the jet so that spray isn’t so bad? Meaning my kids tube and with a 60’ rope the spray is hitting them in the face. Can this be adjustable at least a lil bit?
Hey Ryan, great question. We used to keep ski goggles on board for the same reason, then we got a 75ft. tow rope. But fortunately today due to the ingenuity of Will Owen over at JetBoatPilot.com, you can get some of their steering fins that will leave your riders dry. Give them a call.
Great video! Looking at your boat and trying to compare to my 2019 AR195. Working on the boat yesterday I noticed my cable missing the rubber parts and it’s very loose at the top where it goes into the hull. I know missing the rubber is not good, but should it be so loose going up into the hull? We’ve had issues a bit since we purchased used a few months ago. I’m wondering if we need a new cable replacement. I”m taking it to a mechanic next week, just curious to know your thoughts. Knowledge is a good thing especially when I”m a new boater. Thanks in advance. Sorry that we are one of those Southerners who can go out all year!
No worries Don, I hope to be a Southerner boating all year one day too. Need to work a few more years. There should be play in the cable to allow for the up and down movement of the gate. Have someone move the directional controller in the boat as you observe it in the rear. If all is working well and there are no leaks, I would leave it and see what the mechanic has to say. Your boat is not that old, should be fine.
@@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore Thanks that is good advice. I was going to check a few things before we go back out again, like gate, and the cable inside the engine compartment to see how that is working as well. I’ll let you know what the mechanic says.
@@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore checked out bucket today and everything is fine. In neutral position gap is not as big as what you’re showing, but not enough for me to adjust. Going out in the morning if wind doesn’t get to crazy! Thanks again for sharing your videos!
Help Captain, do those cables sometimes get bent back down under there. My throttle is stiff due to my boat sucking a wakeboard rope got sucked under. I think the rope pulled the cable rod or bent the rod to the bucket.
I don't see how sucking in a rope would do that. But while on the trailer have someone articulate the bucket up and down while you observe from the rear. Hope that helps.
@@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore yes I bent the the cable rod back, I’m good now thanks. I’m guessing when the rope was getting pulled wrapped tight behind the bucket with the force of getting sucked in, it bent it so it made the throttle stiff. Keep makes videos like this Capt.
I have a question for you related to a boat I just bought from long island captain leon. The control cable affixed to the shift gate is broken about 5-6 inches from the gate. Will I need to replace the entire cable or is there a connector there at the back of the boat? Thanks in advance for the informative videos.
Hey Barry, my understanding is that the cable is all one piece from the directional controller at the helm to the gate at the jet pump. I could be wrong. You may need to get this professionally changed to ensure all is installed correctly and that the hull is sealed at the cable exit point. Good luck!
I need to adjust my nozzles opening would that measurement will be the same for a twin engine? Sx210 2007 look on the manual and can’t find any info on this.
The measurements are in the service manual, but no need to worry about them. Make the adjustment in small increments and retest. As long as the gate is not blocking the full flow in forward you should be good.
You mention 1 inch measurement for initial setting of gate for neutral. There is about 3/8 inch play in linkage so do you push up or down on gate when you take the 1 inch measurement.????
Hey Bob, I would say its when the gate is at rest with no pressure on it up or down. Just let it hang. This is not an exact science. Even the manual provides a range. Adjust it a few turns in the direction it needs to go, take the boat out and evaluate. If wind and current is stable you can dial it in pretty good. Good luck, safe boating.
Hello: Thanks for the prompt Reply.. I think the thrust from the jet will put pressure on the gate & move the gate & cause it to take up the slack in the linkage up or down. Also: The last fwd or rev selection on the controller will leave it in the up or down gate position. 3/8 inch linkage slack is a lot considering manual states thousands of an inch adjust is required. So having to take the boat out of the water to make multiple adjustment to get it right is going to make this process very time consuming.. Your experience with the situation I describe would be appreciated. Thanks ... Bob
@@bobstong4903 my experience is that even when it seems perfect, the next outing it may crawl forward or aft dependent on wind, current and weight distribution in the boat. The purpose of the adjustment is to correct consistent directional movement regardless of conditions, when the control is in the neutral position. You can see if the boat is moving along the dock with the engine off, then start it and look for change. Don't over think it. Good luck.
I like the clean out plug view from underneath. As of 2019 the SX190s pump access clean out plug is a twist lock action now. What happens to the pump top speed performance if that plug is not completely seated tight?
Hey Greg, If the clean out plug is not seated properly in either the older style, or I imagine in the newer twist lock style, the boat will either lose thrust at a minimum or have a blow out. A blow out is when at speed the thrust shoots the plug out, which has been known to damage the access hatch door and sometimes flood the boat. Thankfully it is a rare event. It's worth giving it an extra check before launching.
@@CaptainLeonsBoatingandMore don't blame you for that, yesterday was a nice day. My Marina closed last week for the winter so we're done. Question, the yamalube oil you are using for 4-stroke is standard oil, not synthetic, correct?

Wouldn't it be nice if Yamaha made a trim adjustment wheel right at the helm which micro adjusts the throw on the shift rod.

Great idea. As simple as a large plastic knurled nut similar to a brake adjustment nut on a bicycle hand brake.
