  • I heard your comments from the first shootout and decided to match the same heads! Once again, we're trying to figure out what difference reinforcement rings make on DW Collector's Series snare drums and if you can hear a difference.
Make sure to watch Part 1 to get more details on these snares.
    • DW Snare Drum Re-Rings...
All heads are tuned the same and the kit is captured with an Earthworks DM20 on the snare, Earthworks SR25 mics on the overheads and an sE Electronics V Kick mic.

To me, I feel the one with re-rings sorta focuses the sound more. So you're getting less ring/overtones coming from the drum. Mostly just attack. To me that's the snare I'd choose!

No rings! Thank you for making these videos that allow us all to focus on the subtleties and complexities of sound.

i prefer no rings, it has a bit more lively and open sound. my preference is 8 lugs snare drums with no rings. i like the most lively and open sound snare drum. i also avoid die cast hoops. i outfit all my snares with 2.5mm triple flange solid brass hoops.

For me I do hear the difference. They both sound great! I don't hear one as superior to the other just two different flavors that are pretty close. Thanks so much for this demo great job. I was really surprised to hear that test!!!

I think the re-ring drum has a more robust sound, but as if by magic, all those extra spices manage to have a quicker decay. To me, that makes it the superior drum of the two. I love the sound of both drums. Great job tuning, playing, and presenting this video! Thank you!

Well thanks, now I want both! I think overall I like no-ring a little better, but the lower sustain of the ringed one is also really nice.

So I just bought an Tama Imperialstar 80's kit. All my drums are no re rings but the 18" has the thin re rings. All the drums have the same heads and all sound best with the evans tone rings on them but the 18 (with the reinforcement rings) does not need one to match the tone of the other drums. More focus and maybe a little lower end.

re rings would be better for recordings, non rerings better for live setting with good acoustics

First of all thanks for making the new video and it all being more equal👍
I’d like to say that I thought it would make no difference but it certainly seems like there is a difference but not a better or worse difference
However if I had to choose then I choose the RE-RINGS one

With the rings it’a a lot dryer. I prefer no rings . I want that natural ring and I prefer the open sound. I don’t like a dead dry snare

I like the rering especially the way it allows ghost notes through instead of being a bit wasted in the swell of the no rings. The no ring for rockier stuff. Rering more jazz and subtlety.

Not tuned high enough on snare side for me

I prefer the straight vlt shell. A little more open and flavorful.

I have had a VLT shell, and a 10+6 shell...both 5x14 loved both, but got rid of both...had DW make me a 5.5x14 10+6...that was the winning combo...everything I wanted in a maple snare...just my 2 cents...funny thing is when I hear something different I immediately want it...its called GAS...Gear Acquisition Syndrome

The inner ply wood makes a difference as well but pretty close I guess

no resonance on the no-ring.. just a "ring out of the tone of the shell".. dong........
the re-ring gives it the resonance and thump solid impact snap.

Re ring sounds a bit dryer to me. But just listened on my phone speakers for now.

I'm wearing earbuds and I thought the same thing. The one with re-rings doesnt have as much ring/overtone coming from it
