This is the best snare drum comparison video on the internet...PERIOD! If you're lookin to buy a snare, start this video and close your eyes. When a sound pulls at your heart strings, buy it. Don't be biased. Go with what your ears told you. I'm going with the "Black Magic". With my eyes closed I thought that one sounded the best. My opinion. I also went ahead and purchased the same heads and wires that was demonstrated in the video. My ears are happy. Thanks for taking your time to make and post such great videos.
Great video. Just goes to show if you set up snare drums well they all sound pretty similar. Was pleasantly surprised by how good the aluminium sounds.
The DW Vintage Copper over Steel and also the DW timeless timber are both super impressive!! Those two stood out to me. I generally prefer the sensitivity and “crack” of Ludwig snare drums over any others. Out of these 13 snares I myself own the 14x6.5 Ludwig Black Magic which I normally use for live settings or practice. Great video! Great playing! Thanks Tobias.
Hands down the most interesting comparison, we can really understand what the diferences are there. Very nice to spot diferences in those, and well, all snares have the possibility to be a decent snare.
Why oh why did I ever let my wife talkt me into selling my drums set back in 73. I had 2 vintage Ludwig 67 and 69 Supraphonic 400 chrome over brass 5x14 snares. They came standard with my first set, the Downbeat, and my second set, the Hollywood. I really tried to pick out the winner of your experiment..... alas.... that crazy wild chrome over brass Ludwig Supraphonic 400 of 1969 is still a studio mic sounding winner. What a gem..... even after all these years.
thanks for the video, my broke ass don't have the money to buy any of them anyways but you really hear the differences in the overtone and decays with the back-to-back comparison and the tight grooves showing off
Great video. Personally my favorite is the DW BNOB 6.5”x14”, but the 8” is close enough! 🤣🤣🤣 To my ears, that one and the aluminum DW sound the best. I feel that the drums could’ve used just a small bit of dampening like a Moon Gel or a small Snareweight? In doing so I think you would’ve heard more of the different nuances from the drums instead of the overtone of the shell. Just my opinion though! 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for your comment! I thought dampening the snare would bring out the Attack. And The Attack with rimshots and double plied heads is almost the same for every snare. That is why I chose to use no dampening. :) cheers Tobi
The Black Magic isn't even that expensive, tbh. Not surprised to see a lot of DW stuff (as a majority of the stuff they make is quite pricey at the very least), and I'm glad to see a Vintage Supra! Love my '76 one!
Just a quick note: Original Supraphonics from that era were aluminum, hence the light weight. In your quick comparison at the end it says "brass shell". There are, of course, lots of brass shells made by Ludwig then and now, but the late 60s standard Supras all had aluminum shells (same shells as the cheaper Acrolite, by the way, just with different hardware and more lugs).
Do honestly sounds really good but just as good as someone the others, however the craftsmanship of an American company is unmatched in this regard so I'm more then comfortable paying the price.
It's funny, the type of snare is probably the least important part of this recording. I mean, with drumming, tuning and production of that standard, snare choice is splitting hairs. I exaggerate, but still.

Your studio sounds great. Are you using room mics or virtual room plug ins? What size is your room?
Hi! Thanks for the great video. My favourite one is the DW Bell brass.
Was für ein Aufwand. Geil!!!
Can you please share the ballpark pitches that the heads were tuned to?
pleasantly surprised how much i dug the aluminum! which model is it? is it the 3mm or the 1mm shell?
3mm :)
I like the Bell Brass and the Aluminum.
Love it bro🔥 can I ask what Hz you tune bottom head to?
Hello, what is the perfect scientific tune snare in hertz if that exist? I know that depends of the genera you are playing, but that exists?
A bit too many DWs, when there are so many other good brands around.
The raw sound demonstrations, are by far the best sound.
What I really noticed was that on these all super amazing drums, the biggest difference seemed to just be the shell diameter and depth
Great video.

I kinda liked the Black Magic sound the most. I'm ignorant to drums, but I'm very curious about the nuances.
Very nice collection. Also try a Sonor Phonic reissue. It’s a very thick beech shell with diecast hoops. It rly pops nicely.
I like the brass and the alum.
What tune did you used for all your snares in hertz?
What did you use for tuning the snares?
🔥🙌🏻
I like the 14x8 DW black nickel over brass the best followed by the DW aluminum
My favorite section 4:36 5:07 7:55 8:11 12:59 13:20
That Aluminum dw is freaking explosive!!!
That dw aluminum got some wicked crack attack !

I have the DW bcob in 6.5 by 14 and I love the sounds I'm able to get out of it.
High for hard rock and back er down for something a little fatter.

#1 timeless timber
#2 super solid 3/8
#3 bell brass

Bell bronze, Craviotto and DW aluminum

Thirteen snares?? 😮
Do honestly sounds really good but just as good as someone the others, however the craftsmanship of an American company is unmatched in this regard so I'm more then comfortable paying the price.
I've always loved aluminum
Damn!!!
I wish I could be rich like you 😌
I prefer the raw sound
Craviotto!
"Wake up! You need to make money"
