They totally made his model a lot shorter in the cutscene.

He is alive. We just don't know for sure where he's been since Yakuza 2 and after getting expelled from the Omi alliance. Don't know, then there's an explanation when you start chapter 3 as Ruyji.

I personally quite liked it. I guess people hated it bc it was so different to the canon games. Dead Souls was actually my first Yakuza game like seven years ago, I liked it enough to preorder 0 when it was announced even though I hadn't played any other RGG game besides DS at that point :)
It had some frame rate problems, the story wasn't that interesting (Haruka gets kidnapped, again.) and controls were kinda hit or miss. But it did had some good character moments (especially w/ Majima and Akiyama)

Ryuji should look a little younger than Kazuma. Remember in Yakuza 2, in his past, Kazuma was a teen at the time and Ryuji was a child/baby.
