I'm guessing that the cat skulls represented the player's trauma over Meowmie's death, and that the red paw prints represent the wolf or coyote that killed Meowmie. The bleak, dark atmosphere was the player's depression and denial.

@@fatouliddell3192 yes. She was trying to deny meowmie's death, and since it was too dangerous outside and meowmie died to I'm assuming a wolf or coyote, she saw the rest of the world as a horrible and dangerous place.

I'm shedding actual tears. This is making me think of all of my pets and animal homies that have died or disappeared over the years. God this hurts.
This. I clued in right at 11 minutes. Some of the ones I've lost were due to them getting out and not realizing they needed to stay away from the road. I'm glad someone just bought several boxes of tissues because I'm a wreck.
My cat Creamy is an indoor cat but always begs for me to let him out. Since he's already an adult and comes back anyway, I did so that time but it rained so much that day. I just expected him to come back after 1-2 days like he did before. It's been a couple months now and he hasn't come back since. I couldn't even go out to look for him due to the hard lockdown in my country because of the virus. I still cry for him and regret the things I did and didn't do.

They could wind up killing a ton of things, getting killed themselves, bringing parasites into your home, getting lost, or getting abducted (for the last one, pray that the abductor isn't an animal abuser). I hope your cat comes back at some point. If it does, please heed my warning.

This reminds me of when I got my cat, I didn't really want a cat and kind of tried to remain unattached. Then one night I dreamt that I'd died and Death welcomed me into a castle, mind you I never dream, and Death said I was welcome to stay forever and not move on so long as I didn't meddle in her activities, then she tried to use my cat as an ashtray, so I cold clocked Death, and I'd do it again too.

Spoilers below. TLDR, I think that this game really strikes a great balance in it's atmosphere and mood. Props to the developer for that - it's impressive for a Ludum Dare. I won't say that it should be fleshed out or anything, that'd make it too drawn out. But with minor modifications it could definitely go on itch as a priced game!
I'm glad the dev didn't do the straight-up horror route for this game. They could've gone the day the one recent game about a pet went, where it turned out the pet was a monster. I think this game strikes a really good balance of scariness and sadness. And the mood whiplash (from the scary cat skulls in the air to the ending) helped. I like games that make you let your guard down with horror, then hit you with something deeper. It's like the inverse of a jump scare - using horror as the end point of a mood whiplash - which are incredibly overdone.
If the title means that Meowmie dies I swear...

I love the art style, the sweetness, & the simplicity of the story of grieving. When we're lonely, sometimes our pet is our only friend & losing them can make the world seem strange & dark. The memories of caring for them & loving them allow you to grieve & eventually recover.
Really well done - for a tiny game, it had a big heart.

I miss my cat so much
Last week was my first birthday without him, it hurt like u couldn't believe. He was really my best friend- it's almost been a year and I still cry about it pretty often. He helped me hold on and keep living, and I could never thank him enough for that. Long story short, this game may have made me cry lmao
Same. Well, kinda. Sadness, but didn't cry. Then again, I've been so drained of emotion that besides one really bad spot, I haven't cried since my cat died. I had him as a kitten since I was three, and he was still alive and decently active at the age of fifteen or so, but stepdad didn't want to pay the medicine and shot him, without even telling me. Although, if I had known he shot him, I would've probably torn out his throat then and there, cuz how dare that bastard decide if my cat lived or died. He was MY cat.

As someone who once found one my old cats having been attacked by wolves and holding her for her last few moments, this actually made me cry. I can't remember the last game that actually made me cry. But I just remember her so well and how bloodied she was after the attack because my grandmother accidentally let her get out and didn't even bother to find her because "she's a smart cat and she'll find her way back". I still miss her to this day but now I have two wonderful cats that I protect with my life, and having lost Cindy I refuse to live in the country ever again.

When my rats pass away, this is also how I tell them goodbye. I say "goodnight Twinkie, sleep well...I love you" idk why I say goodnight as opposed to goodbye...but it is what it is. Cute little sad game.

Here’s a little story since this brought so many memories of my deceased cat.
My family is poor, and we have lots of pets that can’t be taken to the vet. I was 16, and I didn’t want to let go of my cat despite not having the money to care for her, let alone the others. I loved my cat, and she helped me through everything. All of our pets had fleas, and my cat, Autumn, ended up with heart worms. My mom had to put her down because she was in so much pain. I still cry about it to this day. I was so selfish that I didn’t want to give her to a family that could take care of her, and in the end she died.
I’m 21 now, live by myself, with a new cat, Koi, and I make sure he’s well taken care of and taken to the vet. I took him to the vet once because he ate something and had diarrhea, and I was in tears because of how worried I was. The vet told me he was fine, and surprisingly didn’t charge me for the visit. I think they just did a once over, but I’m not sure.
It’s not fun bathing a fluffy ass cat with diarrhea btw. It sucks.

This takes me back to just 2 months ago when one of the semi-feral "family" cats died. They live at my dad's place outside the city and they're fully outdoor cats because my dad said he doesn't have time to make them indoor cats. Just like he does with every pet he ever had, my dad refuses to take them to vet and pay for vaccines or sterilization, while my mom dumps the responsibility on him and refuses to pay either even tho she is more aware that's what you're supposed to do with pets and she says she cares about them.
One day the cat was really not feeling well, my mom noticed that while being at my dad's place. My dad refused to even consider taking him to the vet until 1 day later when he googled the symptoms and saw that it seemed like feline parvovirus (his dogs almost died to parvovirus in the past). Yet he still said he had no money and has to wait until the next day for a neighbour to lend him money. He refused to even go and say he will pay later or ask the vet if he can bring in the cat anyway, while my mom said she'd help with money and she didn't. The cat died overnight in pain (yes, my dad just had to mention how hard it was for the poor thing to breathe in his last moments) and even now my dad is negligent with pets. I felt so enraged at my parents and guilty for not having a job yet (I'm a full time student for now).
I just don't know how to get over such a preventable death and it's not even the first one when it comes to my dad! At this point I should just stop getting attached to any animals around my dad's house because he won't take care of them and I don't have my own house yet to take them in. However it's kinda late for that because I'm already so attached to one of the remaining cats and I miss him but I don't know if I can face him after his brother died like that.

Gosh. This hits too close to home. Our puppy that we treasure really much died yesterday when he was hit by a car. We let the dogs roam the yard as usual and it turned out that the gate wasnt closed entirely. They got out and Blushie got hit and didnt live. It breaks my heart and now each one of us is blaming ourselves for that. I know it will get better in time, but losing a pet really hurts...

It envies me to know that every RPG protagonist has a huge house, even when they may not even have a job. But what am I talking about! It should be about Meowmie! It pains me to know that for almost 3 days the protagonist had no food or water, but it could have all been pictured differently. Wish I could wobble dance with my dog like that though!
If I had to go five days without food, to ensure my cat could eat every day, I would. Of course, I'd have to eat at least once every week, but still.

Good old Meowmie! There didnt seem to be anything in the bedroom it could have knocked over. Beds and table are as sturdy as they come. I do not picture Meowmie to have the face of judgement, not when it just asks for food and affection. Idk man I sound like a cat owner already.

It's always really hard when you lose a pet that you loved so much, especially when it's a sudden accident and you have to confront it in one second. I remember when I lost one of my cats similar to this a few years ago. I woke up and suddenly I hear my mother talking with my brother about how she had found her dead on the street. I couldn't stop crying. Life can end when you least expect it, especially for pets who sadly live shorter lives than us. That's why if you're a pet owner you should treasure your pet and enjoy every last second with them. Even if you know that one day you'll have to suffer the lost, at least you'll have the good moments to remember and the happiness they gave you.
Man this was... This was really good. It was incredibly simplistic but beautiful in a sad way.

The horror aspect of this game is the physical manifestation of my anxiety when my cat got sick. I never knew what to do I just had that looming knowledge we had to put him down soon :(

Growing up on a farm, it wasn’t uncommon to lose chickens to wild animals, but I greatly recall the day I went outside to see that my sweet little kitty cat had died because of one. Animals do not live for long, and it is especially tragic to see their lives cut even shorter.

I GOT AN AD SO SUDDENLY AFTER SHE WAS ABOUT TO OPEN THE DOOR AND I ALMOST SCREAM.
I swear when I find the person who is chopping onions near me, they will be in a world of hurt.
Damn at first I thought it was apocalyptic game, due to the style design of the outside rooms of your "safe room" and how the player responded when looking out of the window indicating if something happened and she's isolated with the only family member she have left which is her cat, but I soon dropper that theory when the the enemy/monsters are cat like skulls, and the red paw print's represent something canine. So my closest theory was that some dog/wolf told the cat to stop living and the owner is dealing with the trauma of losing said precious cat. Rest in pepperoni cat.
I am sobbing!! I lost my baby boy... my best friend about a year ago... He got outside and never came back... but the neighbors found him. We had him cremated and now he sits on a shelf... My family has always taken care of several animals at once, so we have seen so many of them pass away, and most passed on before we even knew it... finding the body of a precious animal companion is one of the most emotionally painful experiences, especially if you think you could have prevented their death...
