Saigon 1963. On the day of a Monk protest, around 400 Buddhist monks and nuns marched to the intersection carrying banners protesting about the Government oppression of their faith and culture.
Then a car pulled up and three monks got out, one of them being a devout monk called Thích Quang Duc.

I was involved in an accident which set me on fire and gave me some seriously large burns that I have since mostly healed from. That monk being absolutely still and not reacting at all is insane. I know exactly how unbelievably painful it is and for him to be seemingly at peace just shows his devotion, strength and courage to willingly die in one of the worst ways possible so his people are accepted and given the rights they absolutely deserve.
So why did no one save him?
@@wellwellmymichelle Saving his life would have gone against his wishes. He made a determination to sacrifice himself.
I know right he got burned to protest against the Catholic dictatorship, backed by the United states.
He was able to remain still while burning himself alive due to his deep practice of meditation, following principles taught by the Buddha. These principles include understanding that sensations are temporary (impermanence) and practicing mindfulness and equanimity. Through the practice of Vipassana, a form of meditation taught by the Buddha, anyone can learn to observe sensations without reacting to them. This allows for incredible control over the mind and body, even in extreme situations, although reaching such an advanced level requires intense and dedicated practice.

I always find it interesting how the death of one person like in this can draw more attention and create more change than the deaths of larger group of people.
"A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic."
If one person dies, it gives the event a face, if several people die, it gives the event a number. And people remember faces better than numbers.
It's Joseph stalins quote and it's true it happens every time
@@shrishkalambe7833 Stalin never said that. It is a misquote.
Can. But letting your comment stand like that implies that the death of a larger group of people has never, or at least seldomly, had a bigger impact. There are numerous ecxamples to the contrary. This event didn't change much, the Holocaust, the dropping of the two atomic bombs, 9/11, the slaughter of WWI, the war deaths of WWII, the hundreds of millions dead in the course of colonialism (including the Great Dying in america), the mongolian invasion, the boxer rebellion, the napoleonic wars, the bronze age collapse, the fall of rome and the 30 years war easily come to mind to have changed the world much, much more.
Also, Stalin never said that, it's a misattribution.

I wrote a essay about the burning monk when I was in college. I grow up watching movies of Kung fu and monk with martial arts skills. But after reading photographer Malcolm Brown describe what he saw that day I realize this monk didn’t have superhuman powers. He felt it all, all the pain. Malcolm said he did see him twitch but he just took the pain. That to me is sacrifice for what you believe in. He may not have been superhuman but I have the upmost respect for what he did. Some say he was a true bodhisattva, perhaps he was.🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Mightve just been muscle twitches. Like when you salt raw meat.
When you grill a piece of meat, it expands and contracts. Therefore it cannot be concluded that he is trying to endure. The mental capacity to endure pain is only effective when the physical body is healthy enough. When the body is destroyed, the brain will not be awake enough, causing struggling. At least for a few seconds before dying. He didn't struggle at all => He used superpowers to separate the soul from the physical body, which is the highest power of Buddhism

I recently read a book called, “ Learning True Love”, by sister Chan Khong who was actually there witnessed the whole self-immolation in the middle of Saigon. I have learned a great deal of the suffering of Vietnamese people. I cannot believe a Catholic leader who would go so far as killing their own people just because of “different” religion. Catholicism was not even their ancient religion. It was brought in because France colonized Vietnam. As Dalai Lama says, Being kind to another human being always comes before ANY religion.
and that's how the South lose
The Ngô-Đình family suffered under the anti-Catholic persecutions of Emperors Minh Mạng and Tự Đức. In 1880, while Diệm's father, Ngô Đình Khả (1850-1925), was studying in British Malaya, an anti-Catholic riot led by Buddhist monks almost wiped out the Ngô-Đình clan. Over 100 of the Ngô clan were "burned alive in a church including Khả's father, brothers, and sisters.
