But both the North Vietnamese army and the South Vietnamese army were always multiethnic (Vietnamese, Tai, Tay, Nung, Khmer, Cham, Chinese, Lolo,...). Some region the army was only 50% Vietnamese. Vietnamese are Vietics. And Vietics are Austroasiatics (Mon-Khmer, Halogroup O1b1). In ancient time they were the Baiyue spread from Yunnan and the Tibetan Plateau to across Southeast Asia, India and the Archipelagos. Fucking ducks that distort the facts and keep saying Vietnam is full of Chinese, "Vietnamese people" or something stupid.

    Some points to clarify
In Vietnamese culture, the "malevolent spirits" ("vong hồn" in Vietnamese) isn't exactly that scary compare to relevant western counterpart. They usually don't harm the subject like in horror movie but rather bring misfortune, sickness & miscarriages for those with weaker constitution. This CAN be ward off by offerings and prayers.
IMO if the CIA tried to breed lots of predators, give the the taste of human and release them into the wild it would be more effective. My grandfather who was a sapper at the HoChiMinh trail said that he feared wild predators the most, then US/ARVN rangers & airstrikes. Not once was he concerned about ghosts but rather he is haunted by the sights of his comrades getting dragged into the woods by tigers (they were not allowed to fire since it would reveal their positions + being sapper units mean only a few have firearms on hand)

    • @captaindookey
      @captaindookey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +68

For the CIA that sounds like the silliest thing they would ever do but in one way it would be devastating to the environment introducing predators into mainland S.E.A. my respect for your grandfather, that war was hard on everyone.

Would be interesting to see this kind of tactic used with modern audio equipment. It could be a LOT smaller and higher quality to the point where it really would sound like ghosts in the jungle with speakers rarely found. Just imagine setting up a remote activated network automatedly run so you get only single sounds or sentences from each speaker, making them much harder to find along with real sounding audio
    Edit:
They could probably use remote activated lights and such to enhance the wandering spirit thing

Oh the things we could do. Well-timed whispers from all directions like you said. Abandoned outposts with ritualistic equipment in poorly concealed rooms. Broken cages with heavy chains and unsettling roars in the distance. Drones fashioned into strange shapes and deformed creatures that patrol the land. Our superstitious foes believe the worst of us anyway. Play into their fear. Make them the stars of their own horror movie.

If not ghosts, fake troops firing guns maybe. Even have a second set of audio equipment playing bullet cracks.
Idea is to dupe the enemy into thinking they are being shot at and hopefuly stay in cover, or move in on the "troops" which are strategically positioned.
Either way, real soliders are already in position to pick them off. Especially those who had advanced into the fake infantry's location which doubles as a killzone.

Meanwhile, my American Grandfather, who ironically, also fought in the Vietnam War, was appart of the troopers who set these tapes up, and while they heard the Vietnamese get scared shitless, he and his friends couldn’t help, but chuckle a bit, he almost laughed out loud before his friends had to shut him up.

We had big loud speakers at trucks to send them into woods and hide until the enemy is approaching. Then it sounds Tank and Motor noises at the direction to distract the enemy’s perception of the fight action. I personally was in doubt wether that works. However we had also leaflets and a radio station.

For some reason listening to the audio of the recording actually sounded scary and it even frightened me a lot but such a brutal tactic to use in a war where the US is losing

    • @luigimrlgaming9484

      Actually it wasn’t brutal
It probably wouldn’t work and it didn’t
However in a guerrilla war you start looking for more options than direct force

My grandpa was a member of a psychological unit in Europe (pre-Vietnam) and its always interesting to hear how they could trick European soldiers with a simple note and then loudspeakers or a tempting offer by a guy standing on the side of the road handing out papers manually. Interesting stuff and am very pleased he missed Vietnam as these soldiers had terrible survival rates!
Imagine getting a paper that read "Tank crossing zone" and then setting camp in a open field, where tank sounds are played later that night... You'd have no choice but to get up and see, or make way for these invisible tanks!
