While this point is absolutely valid, from an injured players perspective, is it right that they’re forced to have to play games when they’re injured, just so they can reach this arbitrary threshold? Halliburton is an example of a player who’s currently injured, but is reluctantly playing through it just to reach the 65-game threshold, further putting himself at greater risk whilst playing significantly worse when he’s healthy. @@broski2003_yt I probably don’t entirely disagree with you, but I’m not sure if enforcing a 65 game rule is the correct answer. @@joebidet3606 see all the 65 game rule makes players do is try and achieve that threshold and if healthy for 80% of the season, they will be eligible. If not, and they are injured im sure the league doesnt want injured stars playing, instead hope they rest up and play 65 games the next season
More importantly we need to get to the root cause of all these injuries. I think Van Gundy pointed it out that technology, nutrition, and recovery is so advanced nowadays compared to the Jordan, Kobe, and Magic/Bird era yet players are getting injured more. Thats the real problem that no one is addressing.

You've got players literally dodging difficult match ups in the "MVP Race" what kind of 'MVP' would it be if they got to remove their bad match ups from their average.
The rule needs to be tweaked. The first time is never perfect but you are now seeing what it can turn into. People who are clearly the winners of certain awards won’t get them due to this restriction. @@allelitememesaem3916I don’t think Alex Caruso, a good player, is really affected by the 65-game rule. The rule really only affects star players as they are the only players who will win the awards, effectively targeting them.
@joebidet3606 Huh? Yes, Caruso is affected by the 65 game rule. #1 A player that isn't good AND can't play 65 games consistently ain't even staying in the league. So clearly you haven't even begun to think through what you're saying. #2 If a star player can't recieve an award or make All NBA/Defense team due to missing games, that leaves a spot open for someone else. Players who may not be superstars but are formidable in their own right can make the most of this. They want to make sure they suit up for enough games so they can get consideration in those instances and potentially get more money and recognition for themselves. This rule gives incentive to all players who SHOULD strive to be their best and actually play.
@@allelitememesaem3916 there are about 30 awards given for the entire NBA, of course this rule only targets those who are actually candidates to receive them. All the nba did was give 17 vacation days. Sounds like they're getting what the rest of society normally does along with millions. Blue collar works of many professions don't even get that.
Two things here- 1. I’m glad the rule was set in place, it’s great for the fans who watch on tv and who pay money to go to the arena just to find out the star is sitting out randomly with no documented injury. 2. SAS is right about the in season tournament. Molly acts like she doesn’t understand that 500k is 500k, they want that money.
CEO of a company has an attendance issue at work. He issues a new policy: "Employees who are absent more than 20% of the work year are not eligible for consideration to receive the top-performance based awards and the accompanying monetary bonuses." That seems like a pretty fair policy to me.
I agree the rule is a good thing, but this is a terrible comparison given that this “job” comes with the extreme risk of injury to begin with. If an employee of a construction company missed 20% of the work year because a coworker accidentally crushed your hand with a steel beam, they wouldn’t be exempt from monetary bonuses. Completely different situations, do not compare the NBA to normal jobs.

On top of that you aren’t working 260 days a year if not more like the common people. Now with the high pace no contact ball players are not putting the emphasis on strength, and therefore are more fragile.
Most injuries these days are leg injuries, not contact injuries. Players have to run way farther now due to the 3 point era, which likely puts much more pressure on joints. The old heads would get injured just as much in today's league.

This is not about the owners but the fans. The fans were complaining, the TV networks that had a deal with the NBA were complaining, so the owners had to do something to make players play. 65 games is just about right.
First thing I've agreed on with SAS if about 2 years. 65 games is only 79% of the season. It's 20 minutes as well so that's not even a full game. You can play 65 games of 20 minutes and qualify; totally fair.
Even if you’re historically great in 64 games you’re arguably not more valuable to your team than a guy who’s really, really good for 80 games. Cos you’re team is now an underdog in 20% of games cos you sat them. 64 games shouldn’t be an all star for precisely that reason.
The only ones that don’t have to worry are the ones with legitimate injuries. The only ones who complain are the ones that sit out with no legitimate reason. Like when Ben sat out his entire first season with the Nets and still fought to get his money, like, what? Never in my life have I ever seen a job pay you for not working/doing your job 🤦♂️
I feel like the same applies to Embiid right now. He was hunting for (and playing at) the MVP and was banged up, but he knew he was closing in on the games missed limit so he played anyway. Kobe used to talk about why he played through so many injuries and that was because of people who might only be able to afford to attend one game a season and how he felt he'd be robbing them by sitting out if he felt that if he could play. The best ability is availability. Part of what makes an MVP is being there to play. The endurance test that is the season is done exactly for this reason. Lots of players can't play 65 games. But thats part of what separates the good from the great.

They showed a picture of him one game and he had like 12 current injuries all through the year and wasn’t missing any games and dude was getting 40 when he wanted too. This era of NBA is soft. I agree with SAS. One of the points he didn't touch on is that in the 70's, 80's, and 90's the game was much more physical than it is today. Therefore, they had legitimate reasons to miss games but they played anyway. Today's league is not very physical, so it makes it even worse that players are missing so many games.

Took a quick look at basketball reference. 7 NBA MVPs have played less than 70 games. Of those 7, only two played less than 60: Bill Walton (58) and Karl Malone (who won it during the lockout year with 49 games played). My point: if 65 games is not a fair number, I don't know what is. Yes, injuries happen, but you can't claim to be the best for a whole season when you play less than 80 percent of the season.
Yall name the same people like there isn’t 400 other people in the league that played, who are no where near the talent level that we have today. With the way these guys move and jump today it makes them more prone to injury. You can’t help if you get injured
NBA tickets are hundreds of dollars and fans are quite literally paying the price of admission to watch the stars. Fans don't know if the star player will even play until 20 minuets before the game, yet they are still subjected to paying the price as if they are. The league has literally set it up so players are still able to miss SEVENTEEN games and still be eligible for awards and then contract incentivized monster paydays, and the players are still out here complaining. Show up to work if you want to be payed. Not everyone can be a max player, do yourself a favor and play basketball if you want to ensure that.
Sooooo glad Mad Dog brought up where this actually started. Popovich sitting his players and scratch reason being “old”. Injury aside, I agree the players abused the load management idea.
Literally here in BK, a certain player has cost the team so much salary room and yet we barely see him even when he was in Philly. For Nets fans, and the organization, it’s tough to buy a ticket and expect to see a no-show.
Exactly. What other profession can you take 20% of work days off without losing your job? Yet there are some players complaining about having to "take care of their bodies". Which is something that should be done anyway. I'm not suggesting play basketball at a professional level is easy, but if I made over $250 million, I wouldn't be complaining. Idea, pay players per game. Average the contract over the number of games to be played in the contract. If they play that game, they get a check. If they don't play, they don't get a check. We'll see who still needs to sit out 25% of their games if they lose 25% of their contract earnings.
Yeah but then there will be a discussion over injury and some players will claim to be injured and still want their check when they’re not. Brings us back to square one
@@prince_jordan1696 Medical Clearance should prove that.. and depends on the injury they have, then get paid for just the percentage of the games, they'll miss.

Mad Dog is absolutely right about the teams of the 60's and 70's. Because of the travels from East Coast to West Coast during the Finals, David Stern started the 2-3-2 format of the NBA Finals that ran from 1985 to 2013. They need to go back to that format.
Tyrese is forgetting one big thing. It’s not just the owners who wanted the the 65 game rule it was also Adam Silver who wanted to cut down on load management and the most effective way to cut down on it was to incentivize players to play and sadly the only way to do that is to put personnel accolades on the long.
There aren’t more than about 50 candidates to win them, this rule is clearly targeting certain players in specific situations.

I agree the rule is a good thing, but this is a terrible comparison given that this “job” comes with the extreme risk of injury to begin with. Some of these dudes missing the point these star players missing games isn’t solely on them… These people are protecting their investments.. I love the new rule it ensures the RIGHT folks get paid guys like Russ & Mikel Bridges would have been eating off this rule…
inflation fellas, don't forget inflation
but i agree, it is tiny compared to todays nba players' salary
@@x332433 No Inflation goes from 3 million to 60-100 million in 20- 30 years. What country you think this is? LMAO!
And this is why they call this era of the league soft.
Iverson barely 6ft may have weighed 185 pounds who knows.
They showed a picture of him one game and he had like 12 current injuries all through the year and wasn’t missing any games and dude was getting 40 when he wanted too.
This era of NBA is soft.
They want to be allowed to scored rather than earn a bucket and the defense gets punished for being to physical.
Granted these guys today are super talented but it’s one sided. It’s just make the games hard to watch sometimes.
In his first 9 seasons, he played at least 80 percent of his games eight times.
@@brianschaffer9220 and this wasn’t a shoot the three era it was a drive to the basket era with bigger bodies it’s just a shame
Way more fast paced and more possession based game but I see what u are saying
Fast paced because guys can travel like crazy nowadays.@@HR-ms6ed
Iverson was different! Straight up killer!
Not only did older players not sit out, many of them came back EARLY from injury
Not only that but they played with intensity. But i guess players and teams before had to play more with their upper body than lower body
Returning early from injury can also aggravate your injury further though
Could’ve used PEDs as I’ve heard those quicken healing
@@jmgonzales7701 There wasn't as much movement in the game back then compared to now, with all the stop and go tthat you see nowadays, combined with the AAU system making them play too much gale at an early age. @@Cyrus-rodn45nope these guys were built different

100 million dollars worth of complaints! That’s insane
and to top it off, they're playing a BASKETBALL game! not putting their life on the line. and they complain about 65 games 😂
Lol jokes on you for still watching WWE I mean NBA
One of my all-time favorite players is Robert Parrish, in 20 out of his 21 seasons in the NBA, he played more than 70 games.
Just crazy
I never thought we'd be at a point where we have to praise the legends just for showing up. It use to be something we took for grant SMDH
And that one season he didn't was his final season. He only played 43 games.
But, he was 44 years old and nearing retirement. Totally excusable.
You want a cookie? Lol
I like Haliburton, but I think they should raise it to 70 minimum tbh. As a kid we played through rolled ankles and strained shoulders just for the love of the game... if you can't roll outta bed for 65 out of 82 games for 50+ million...maybe you are not cut out to be a professional NBA player..
& it also shortened players careers & there by costing the owners more money. It’s the owners … players get the blame.
You really comparing your neighborhood pick up games to an injured NBA player who have to play against the worlds best athletes injured. lol
@@ocampbell1954not the point and most of these mfs is soft. They get all this money to play so play it’s really that simple because if their audience leaves they have no millions they will keep testing their audience
Tell that to Isaiah Thomas. How did playing through injury work out for him?
@@Young-ep8ikthey don’t care that the thing the players know the fans don’t actually care about them
Jordan and guys back then played 82 games every year dam near. Personally I think it should be 72 games not 65. That still gives 10 whole games
I agree with SAS. One of the points he didn't touch on is that in the 70's, 80's, and 90's the game was much more physical than it is today. Therefore, they had legitimate reasons to miss games but they played anyway. Today's league is not very physical, so it makes it even worse that players are missing so many games.
The pace is faster today, but you get hammered every night in the 80s and 90s. Brooks hitting Lebron in the face would've been a common foul even in the early 2000s.
🤦🏽♂️
That don’t matter when they players today are more athletic which makes you more prone to injury
They had far less advanced medical procedures/knowledge too. And likely didn't have teams of people cooking for them, creating workout plans, etc.
@@Jerm0116 So does not being able to get surgery. Mickey Mantle played a full baseball career on a torn ACL. Imagine if guys like that had todays medical care
Stephen A’s best take yet
🔥🔥👏🏾✅my Mann SA
Real talk.. I would dare to say ever..
Amen
Stephen A Smith.. This is one of your best rants of all-time. Epic & needed to be said!
I think Walton won the MVP when players could vote for MVP.
If your a player under 35 and miss a quarter of the season without major injury ain’t no way u should be rewarded.
No if your being paid millions you should be able to work 82 times a year
But what if those all 35 games, you're averaging 50ppg and all 35 games were wins?
@@SandauxBeats Who cares? if you can't be counted on, sporadic greatness is pointless.
Couldn’t agree more with SAS
the audacity the players have is unbelievable

Yesss Stephen A. The fans expect players to do their job and are willing to pay to see them do it. Not sit out if not injured.
THANK YOU Stephen A. this has been a long time coming. Far too many times have I turned to a game only to find out Ill be watching the bench play.
Jordan, Stockton, and Kareem never made excuses.

Yall name the same people like there isn’t 400 other people in the league that played, who are no where near the talent level that we have today. With the way these guys move and jump today it makes them more prone to injury. You can’t help if you get injured
Exactly
I love how so many fans are on the same page about this. AMAZING RULE
Molly we’re moving on - Stephen A. no we staying right here this needs to be said! I was cracking up
Literally here in BK, a certain player has cost the team so much salary room and yet we barely see him even when he was in Philly. For Nets fans, and the organization, it’s tough to buy a ticket and expect to see a no-show.
More money, better nutrition, better therapies, better travel conditions and less back to back games and they still don't want to play!
Games less physical too
Exactly. What other profession can you take 20% of work days off without losing your job? Yet there are some players complaining about having to "take care of their bodies". Which is something that should be done anyway. I'm not suggesting play basketball at a professional level is easy, but if I made over $250 million, I wouldn't be complaining. In fact I would want to be on the court whenever I could.
Totally agree. This has been one of the best regular season I've seen in a long time cos everyone is playing and playing hard. They gotta work for that bag
This was the most satisfying take I’ve ever heard by Stephen a smith
Should be 70 games tbh unfortunately for players that are actually injured they’re taking heat due to their peers

@febrecordz4032 so what? Ppl with regular jobs have to work and we don't make 1000th of what these dudes make...and they work half a year.
this is by far Stephen A's DOPEST take!
I think the NBA is a perfect experiment that proves people can’t be happy no matter what. The fact that these players are living beyond the wildest dream lives and still manage to complain proves the ideal society isn’t possible.
Not only that but they already earn a paycheck per game.....which I thinks comes out to average of their salary per yr based on dere contracts
@@prince_jordan1696 Medical Clearance should prove that.. and depends on the injury they have, then get paid for just the percentage of the games, they'll miss.
@@Lovechie4life yes, i was also think to have an independent league medical clearance team. If the league (not your team) medical staff says you're injured, then you still get paychecks.
Also, players currently get their game paychecks whether they play or not. What I'm saying is make it so that they only get that paycheck if they play. (or if they are verified as injured)
Mad Dog is absolutely right about the teams of the 60's and 70's. Because of the travels from East Coast to West Coast during the Finals, David Stern started the 2-3-2 format of the NBA Finals that ran from 1985 to 2013. They need to go back to that format.
I agree 100% that
Tyrese is forgetting one big thing. It’s not just the owners who wanted the the 65 game rule it was also Adam Silver who wanted to cut down on load management and the most effective way to cut down on it was to incentivize players to play and sadly the only way to do that is to put personnel accolades on the long. If the players didn’t like the new rule they could have resisted it and probably would have succeeded in stopping it but they didn’t.
All in all.. it's professionalism! Work ethic! These ninjas don't have a a drop 💧
It's what the players union approved also, which means the players approved it!! They all knew going in.
@@aldohattonduran5227tyrese does though, I think that’s why he is pissed, dude was legit injured, now stands to miss out on 40+ million dollars if he doesn’t play 65 games
