    From what i understand the GoPro battery is a 2s 1200mah lipo which means it's safe to charge the battery up to 2.4amps (2sx1.2amps = 2.4amps maximum safe charging) So charging a battery at 2.1amps is perfectly fine and won't damage your battery at all.

      2S is 2 cells in Series. The voltage of the pack would double to about 7.6v nominal (8.4v fully charged) and Amps stays at 1.2A . 2P would be 2 cells in Parallel. Voltage stays the same but Amps would double to 2.4A. If it's 2 cells, they're likely in parallel.

    I got overheating problem recording on 1080/30/W, (all turned OFF: wi-fi, gps, voice command, hyper-smooth, screen set to be off after 1min, screen brightness on 10%) and still overheating over 70°C (158°F). I guess that is expected for such small device to heat up while recording in 4K 60fps but this is ridiculous, so I'm trying to find out is this for all gopro 8 or maybe for some batches?
    Please let me know if you did some recording over 30min in 1080 or 2.7 and if your gopro 8 overheat?

  • @odinata

    The amperage rating of a wall charger just says how much the wall charger can put out, not how much the GoPro will use.
    If the old ones can only draw 1 amp, then the a 2 amp wall charger will only deliver it one amp.
    So any charger will work on any GoPro, if it outputs 1 to 2 amps.

    • @JordanHetrick
      @JordanHetrick  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the clarification. However, before making this video, I spoke to GoPro about this and they caution not to use chargers that put out too much charge because it may damage the battery. Not sure why they recommend this if it's not an issue. That being said, I've used lots of chargers and not had any problems. Thanks again.

    • @odinata
      @odinata 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JordanHetrick Voltage is very important. If the charger put out more than 5 volts, then it would damage the camera. Amperage is the ability of the charger to OUTPUT. But it cannot force a 1 amp GoPro to take IN 2 amps.
      The GoPro draws only the AMPERAGE it needs, even if the charger had the capability of supplying 50 amps.

    Hi Jordan. Can you connect the Go Pro 8 to a portable battery pack and obtain full functionality at the same time as its recording on a full charge of 100%. I’m looking to leave the Go Pro inside the car when parked as a security camera with the engine switched off using remote functionality from outside the car. Ideally I’m looking to boost the record time using a power pack without the standard battery running out so quickly

    • @1goodamigo

      That seems to be a problem with all the Go Pros when operating at high resolution, even without an external power supply. They heat up and will automatically shut down when operating in the higher resolution video recording. By removing the internal battery and just running with an external battery, they will operate longer in 4K before they heat up and shut down.

    • @JordanHetrick
      @JordanHetrick  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jose,
      5V/1A is the output recommended by GoPro. If you are using an external power supply, it's best to remove the battery and just use the external power source. This will reduce the chance of overheating.

  • @burgler2112
    @burgler2112 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I just tried a mophie powerboost mini, 5V 1A output and when I turned it on my Hero 8 screen went all fuzzy and it stopped recording. Once I removed the USB cable from my GoPro everything worked fine and I was able to start recording again.
    Have you ever had issues like that with a usb power pack?

  • @tomiadventures
    @tomiadventures 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    afaik how this work, the amps output is the max current output, whereas the voltage is set. so, if it doesn't draw more than 2 amps, it shouldn't matter if you plugged it into an infinite amp supply, it only draws what it needs. the problem i think i c with gopro tho is a hardware design. i have to do some more testing, but it appears to me it cant charge and record (or even be on) at the same time (i have seen some videos where ppl do this tho, again, need to do more testing). the battery drains even while plugged in for me. i think this may be on purpose, to prevent overheating.

    • @JordanHetrick
      @JordanHetrick  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the electrical info- obviously I come from a camera background. 😉, You can run off external power without draining the battery, but it's not going to charge the battery as it records. When I use external power for extended recording times, I usually just pull the battery out and just use the power bank.

    • @tomiadventures
      @tomiadventures 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JordanHetrick yea, it drained because my cable was a) current limited, maybe usb2.0, at 500mA max, and b) i had 3 connected together so definitly had a vltage drop of 1.4ohms across the cable. usb 3.0 has higher current rating.

    I have a Hero 6 Black I use on my boat. I have tried using a micro to USB cable to a cigarette lighter adapter plug on my boat since I wanted it to record all day and loop the videos. All day long it kept shutting off and repairing the file. I then tried an Anker brand battery pack and while it didn't stop and repair the file that often, it still happens. By watching this video, I discovered the cigarette lighter USB adapter plug is 2.1 amp. It also appears the Anker battery pack is 5v 2 amp. Is the problem the that both are overheating the battery and causing it to shut down?

      Yeah, it's a common problem that happens with a lot of chargers. If I am doing a long time lapse on external power, I always remove the battery just to be sure that the camera continues recording. I've recorded a few night lapses that I thought were going to be awesome only to find out that the external charger stopped powering the camera, and my time lapse stopped recording once the battery ran out of juice.

    New subscriber here! So happy to find your channel. I just ordered a Hero8 today and have used a Hero3 Black the past five years. If you would please, I have a question about continuous recording while connected to an external power supply, as shown in the later part of your video. Does your camera heat up during continuous recording? I ask because my Hero3 becomes hot, 120 degrees or more, during continuous loop recording with an external power supply. The external power supply cord has a small device at one end that replaces the camera battery and a USB on the other end that connects to the Anker power pack. I am curious if I will have the same issue with the Hero8. Thanks again for informative channel.

    I used external battery pack as you show at 5:03 for my GoPro 8. Initially it fooled me to think is has all the power and recording. So I left it all night long on time lapse, multiple times taking care of the location to see camera is safe and no moisture on glass. But next day worst surprise. NO RECORDING.
    Then I checked. Without battery and only on large external USB power pack, it appear to be running normally, even recording, for a second or two. later it give the message "No Battery" and next auto turn off the camera....
    Where did I go wrong and was because I left no battery in it or should I first activate anything on the menu to run on external battery....?
    Very frustrating and seems gopro has a lot hidden tricks to ensure your footage not to show up on memory card!

      And I don't know if you know it, but you can also film without any battery in quiet situations like a timewarp when hiking for example and that's what I use this system the most. Indeed without any internal battery in the gopro, you simply connect a powerbank and here we go you can film for hours depending on the capacity of your powerbank. For my part this is what solved my problem for long timewarp or long videos, because I could absolutely not charge the camera while filming when the internal battery was inside, it did not work except on some video modes, removing the battery solved all my problems!

      if what you are doing allows you to tuck in a power bank(like biking where you can put the power bank in a top tube bag, or hiking where you can put it in a pocket), just forget about the batteries and power the gopro with only the power bank.

    Doesn’t the GoPro has overcharge and overvoltage protection? Like basically all electronics in the last 10 years? Because I’ve charged it with a lot of different sources and nothing really bad happened. Also, I don’t know of a single person who fried a GoPro this way. I’ve connected it to wall USB outlets, power banks, solar and more.

    • @JordanHetrick
      @JordanHetrick  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to GoPro's support, the battery doesn't. The camera will not be damaged, just the battery. I've also charged it using lots of different charging devices too (trying to see if I could kill the battery) and have not had any problems. However, I have heard from friends who have killed the battery capacity by overcharging and GoPro said they are not responsible if you use an incompatible charger.
      So, I tried to provide you guys with some chargers that have the correct voltage to be safe. Of course, it's your call and you are probably fine with a stronger charger, just not officially in GoPro's eyes😉

    lol men wtf ! you are confusing people ! about high AMPS ! the charger is only capable of delivering more power, you can connect 1A devices to 2A charger here is almost no risk ! another way you "can't" do it !

      Hey, I was just going exactly off what GoPro recommends. I actually sat at a store and saw GoPro representatives deny a warranty because someone used a charger with too much voltage. So, I'm trying to give my best advice to help people avoid issues.
