Really enjoyed the video as usual. I was the mechanic on a trans African trip in 90-91. We drove 2 of them from Oxfordshire to Uganda. Across the Sahara, through the Congo. Involved in a military coup. Lots of awesome adventures and the trucks are the best land rover ever made. We ran with around a tonne in the back which really soya them out.
You've just reminded me how much fun I had in my 101 RHD GS back in the early 90s. Huge fun at traffic lights - would beat lots of hot hatches up to about 30 mph... Sadly at 12mpg I couldn't afford to keep it. Oh, by the way, the ride is much improved with half a ton of sand in the back. Off road it was just awesome. Now going to dig out the photos and relive some memories... Thanks Ian and enjoy NZ. Scenery in South Island superb.
I used to drive these back in my army days....great fun! The GS version was for towing the 105mm light gun with the gun crew riding in the back. Congrats on your 50k milestone 😊
Alan, the Pinzgauer replaced the 101. The RB44 was mostly used by Signals. I seen a few in Bosnia being used by SAS based at the school Vitez. Agreed it was a dreadful vehicle!
I drove one in MT Troop. I was told you were supposed to go on a course before you drove them, obviously I never got sent on that. The first thing I always had to find was an adjustable spanner. REME used to put a bolt under the accelerator to limit travel as a crude restrictor which I used to remove. Standout was when someone took one out and I said "do you think you can handle the power?" A couple of hours later he re-appeared looking slightly the worse foe wear, he'd put it in a ditch. Fortunaely he was completely unharmed. I was always slightly wary of them as their was a story going around, true or false, that the prop shaft would disconect at the front and turn it into a pole vaulter...
I remember being on the A1, in an 850 Mini, foot to the floor and being passed by a trio of 101" Rovers, man they were on a mission! Well done on the 50,000 subs.

The GS variants are really light compared to the ambulance body or radio body, thus all the bouncing around. Those tires don't help it any either. I owned 2 ambulance body variants (RHD and LHD) while stationed in the UK and loved them. Much more comfortable and a bit quieter to boot. Biggest mistake I ever made was not bringing one home with me when I left. I owned S-II and SIII Landies as well, but the FC101 is by far my favorite classic Landy. Getting downright hard to find nowadays, especially this side of the pond.

A couple of weeks ago I asked you to do a vid on a Haflinger and you indicated you would if you could get a vehicle but what I nearly also asked you to test was the FC101 and you have done it. I have had a roadgoing 101 for over 10 years and in my view they are the greatest series style LR there is. Here in Australia I manage to get mine offroad a lot and have driven it great distances - far more relaxed than a series 3 or 2 or even a series 2. The 101 will get up to 120kph GPS speed on a long flat run and are a joy to drive after you get used to the steering, the gearchange, the ride, the noise and the numb bum. Thanks - enjoyed the vid immensely.

Well done, 50K! You deserve to grow at an exponential rate with videos like this one. Absolutley brilliant. A good friend of mine was nearly killed by one of these in the early 80's. A soldier in Colchester, a big garrison town for those who don't know, forgot what a red traffic light meant. He jumped the lights and hit my friend who was riding his Suzuki TS250 across the junction. Friend spent several weeks in a coma. He survived but was never the same afterwards. He didn't blame the vehicle though so we can still revel in the glory that is the FC101.
Just got a flashback of my 1st time climbing up a truck and ride away. The excitement for me as a kid was indescribably. It's so wonderful traveling along HubNut.

When I was serving in the TA during the Cold War I got the chance to drive a couple of these - the Mortar Platoon had them, we (HQ Coy) had a 101 ambulance and we later got an FFR (fitted for radio) as a command vehicle, most were RHD. Even though they weren't fast (you really wouldn't want to go fast in one) they felt fast if only for the sound of the magnificent V8 - thanks Buick! I do recall the REME mechanics had a load of problems with broken gear linkages though. However they were absolutely rubbish in the snow (Otterburn in winter). I was following the FFR in a mere Defender and the 101 kept falling off the road - too much weight on the front wheels perhaps? The Defender had no such problem. But you felt like King of the Road when you drove one, with the commanding driving position and the sound of the V8 just begging you to put your foot down. You've brought back happy memories, thanks Ian

50k Big Congrats!! Driving the bouncy FC101 down the nice and bumpy Fosse Way seems appropriate. Despite living within 15 miles I've never actually been up Burton Dassett hills so bonus footage for me there. A year or so after Judge Dredd was released the Land Rover Dealer in Stratford on Avon (Yarnolds as it was then) had 3 or 4 of the Dredd Landies For Sale, from memory they were asking silly money for them.
Well done on the 50k Ian. Always amazed that such bomb-proof, chunky, go-anywhere engineering like the Land Rover has such tiny, spindly wipers - even the normal everyday Defenders

Superb video, I got to about halfway through thinking "gosh, new zealand roads and signs look just like ours!" until the penny dropped 🤦♀️ I think your cameraman needs a special mention, the panning and movement was absolutely perfect 👍

Great vid, I started driving in a LandRover, and have always wanted a FC. Everything is just 'there', you can see how it works, feel how it's working. I remember when they launched the Discovery in 1991 with the tag line "everything you expect from a LandRover", I almost when to the local showroom for a test drive. I wanted to take it to the local Jet Wash and hose down the inside. One day, I will own a FC, and then my life will be complete.
Congratulations on the 50k subs! Travelling to the opposite side of the world to avoid buying drinks was a bit excessive though! Always loved the 101 but never got to drive one further than around the airfield once in a trade off of them driving my V8 127. Proper company cars they where! I drove 127 V8's all over The Former Yugoslavia during the conflict and loved the V8 and the little extra space in the rear really made a difference when 4 men on the road for days at a time. The 127 was originally for carrying Rapier Missiles hence the wider body. Peace Charlie 🇬🇧

Congratulations on 50k subscribers. Love these big beasts. They usually forgotten as a Land Rover product. The Dunsfold collection have the next generation of this truck designed for commercial use in the 1980's.

Our mortar platoon used them as well with the ammunition in the trailer.
The Woeful RB 44 replaced these fine machines in 93 Worst decision ever .

Used these as part of a Milan antitank team. We had missiles lining the back with a firing post and other kit. Awesome vehicles!

It is becoming a genre of TH-cam videos in its own right. Some of them are pretty good as well - who says you can't have too much of a good thing?
I totally started watching with the Invacar. The mighty algorithm got that one absolutely right.

Great vid, I started driving in a LandRover, and have always wanted a FC. Everything is just 'there', you can see how it works, feel how it's working. I remember when they launched the Discovery in 1991 with the tag line "everything you expect from a LandRover", I almost when to the local showroom for a test drive. I wanted to take it to the local Jet Wash and hose down the inside. One day, I will own a FC, and then my life will be complete.

Travelling to the opposite side of the world to avoid buying drinks was a bit excessive though!
Always loved the 101 but never got to drive one further than around the airfield once in a trade off of them driving my V8 127.
Proper company cars they where! I drove 127 V8's all over The Former Yugoslavia during the conflict and loved the V8 and the little extra space in the rear really made a difference when 4 men on the road for days at a time.
The 127 was originally for carrying Rapier Missiles hence the wider body.

Love these big beasts. They usually forgotten as a Land Rover product. The Dunsfold collection have the next generation of this truck designed for commercial use in the 1980's.
