I will watch EVERY 500 point battle reports you make. I LOVE small point battle reports. I feel like bigger games just never make for good viewing experiences.
Twenty years ago, we did this by accident when we were just starting out. Every week just playing with what we could afford to buy and/or paint. The only difference was that we didn’t go out of the way to enforce play balance.
I always wanted to try and refrain from being one of those people that keeps piping up and saying ‘sixth was the best!’ But honestly, sixth was the best 😂
Thank you so much! That’s very kind of you to say. I’ll have the first battle reports up as soon as I can - I’ve made good progress on my tomb kings over the past two days so hopefully it’ll be sooner rather than later! 😁
Never heard of Border Patrol but have played many games with 500pt armies in the past - I've always liked smaller battles due to space and time limitations. Like other folk I'll be getting my armies out of their boxes again to try the new rules, so thanks for the heads up! Look forward to seeing your battle reports.
That sounds great! Smaller games are fantastic to get going, and even after that they retain their appeal for sure! And thank you very much, I’m working hard to get them out as soon as possible 😁
I am really happy you made this video. With small kids my WH life has disappeared completely, but now my m8 and I can game again over a beer. Thx so much!
Mate that’s fantastic to hear! I too have small kids and it’s part of the reason I made the video - I’m so happy it’s helped out! 😁 May you roll well 😎😁
Great stuff, I've always liked playing smaller games myself, in fact I've managed to get in a 500 point game of Old World recently and it worked nicely. It's not only a fantastic size for learning the rules, but it also makes the game more accessible while we get all our minis painted! 😆
Have you seen the Warhammer Fantasy Warbands rules? Same idea, but has adjustments for minimum unit size and frontage. So 3 model minimum for standard infantry rather than 5 for example.
@TabletopSaga I just saw the other comment after I posted mine, sorry! The version I have is from Seventh Edition, September 2006, Written by Eric Sarlin
Nice! It sounds very similar to the old Warband rules for WHFB 6th edition (also published in White Dwarf), those were my favorite rules for small engagements (100 to 500 pts per army, smaller units, etc.) Looking forward to those BRs!
Are they the ones Anthony Reynolds wrote? I’ve been considering reviving those too - though I think the ones I have are chaos warband specific so it would take a wee bit of work! And I’m glad you are looking forward to the battle reports, I’m really excited to make them! I’m currently amassing my terrain 😁
@TabletopSaga-em2zl I have two digital versionsoftheWarbands rules: the original for 6th edition WHFB and a 7th editionrevision. According to the credits on the latter, the 6th edition Warbands rules were written by Jeremy Vetock, and released on WD 296-298 in 2004, then came the 7th edition revision two years later, written by Eric Sarlin. Both versions were available for download as PDFs in the old GW website, but of course that was a long time ago... trust me, I was there... 3,000 years ago... (sorry 😛) although they're still available here and there on the web 😉
I LOVED border patrol! It was so fun and really lent itself to narrative games and quick campaigns. I had already been writing lists for TOW, my favourite is based on the old Bretonnian Hunting Party box set, which is perfect for narrative. 6th ed had all the best stuff and thankfully it's mostly useable for TOW. IIRC they published a more detailed version of border patrol rules for a warhammer world event. Path to Glory is another great 6th ed supplement that works brilliantly for small games in TOW.
I’m so glad so many people, like yourself, share my love for border patrol! And I agree that sixth had the best stuff. I wasn’t aware they did a more detailed version for an event - would you know where I could potentially find them per chance? 😁
@@TabletopSaga I'm pretty sure it was just a pdf they had put out on their old website, sorry I don't have it anymore :( It may need a little bit of comp for the old world tbh, of you might get stuff like dwarf border patrols with 4 gyrocopters.
Ah no worries! My plan is to play a fair few games of border patrol with as many armies as possible to see what needs tweaking for old world and then I’ll come back with a V2. If you think of anything let me know! 😁
@@TabletopSaga I think there needs to be a little bit of army specific comp; e.g. Cap gyrocopters or they can field a unit of 4 at 500pts (they're monstrous cavalry not warmachines)! Maybe allow vampire counts to take a varghulf (140pts) as none of their rare units are below 125pts, also the varghulf is a bit rubbish for 140pts anyway. A bretonnian baron with lance, shield and barded warhorse is 122pts so legal but seems a bit much at 500pts. I think something clarifying the 0-1 per 1000pts stuff, can it be taken at 500pts? I suspect not tbh, but some armies basically have 0 elite units with this interpretation @500pts. Maybe think about bound spell items, I suspect ruby ring would be in every list.
Considering GW (Well the main studio, tOW is specialist games) did combat patrol and boarding actions for 40k and the new AoS equivalent, they could do a similar, well supported format for tOW.
Thinking about it a bit more: Rather than having overall rules, they could do an army of infamy style list for every faction, excluding certain things and adapting limitations.
That’s a more fun name to be honest 😅 have you had many old world games at that scale? It’s actually really fun, and definitely proves you don’t need a full 2k army to have a good game!
I’ve never played ASOIAF, but I believe Warhammer skirmish from back in 6th might help you - it’s much more like MESBG. I don’t have a copy of the book I’m afraid, but if you can track one down hours of fun lies therein!
Hi! I have set up a patreon (don’t worry it’s free!) where I’ve put them. I am going to make a video about that this week, but since you ask I’ll let you know early 😁 if you search tabletop saga on patreon you should find the page 😁
I posted them on the old world Facebook groups. I think they may be lost among the many posts on there now though. Tomorrow I’ll try and sort something more permanent for them, and will put a notice on this channel when I have. It might only be a post as opposed to a video, so please keep a look out! 😁

6th Ed has alot of good stuff that can be used here.. The General´s Compendium, Skirmish, all the WD articles.. :)

Good point. Loud and proud! 😁

Yeah, the map based border prince campaign in generals compendium would be good for multiple small warbands!
i'll be trying this format with my local group
Fantastic! I hope you all have a good game with it. It seems like a great little game way to get a game in a reasonable time frame! 😁

Thats how I would play back in 1985😂
I can’t remember that far back I’m afraid 😂
I'm looking forward to this!

Just started a Dwarf and Orc 500points armies to play with a friend, I think combat patrol is a great way to get into the Old World
Awesome! I’m jealous of the dwarfs. I don’t have any of those yet but I’ve always had a soft spot for the grumbly little blokes 😂
I interested in trying this with my mates at the club
I hope you all have fun and, if you do play them, please let me know how you get on! 😁

I’m gonna be starting with 500 points and I’m gonna use it to get friends into the game cuz we won’t have to break the bank for it lol.
That’s awesome mate! And yeah, not breaking the bank is a HUGE appeal 😂
Thanks for video and the rules and scenario. My copy of white dwarf 285 isn’t same as yours. I am in Canada.
No worries! Did Canada get its own White Dwarf or did you have the US one? Please excuse my ignorance! 😂
@@TabletopSaga I believe my is the same as US at that time they add a supplement for Canada

@@TabletopSaga thanks so much
A new way to play! The games out a month relax.
That’s my point though - if it’s only been out a month then many people won’t have an army ready to play a full game. With border patrol you only need a small force, so you can get playing faster!
The real issue I see is nobody wants to actually play, regardless.
Is that in your local area? That’s a shame if so. I’m lucky and have more than one friend that want to play! 😁
