- Inspired by the classic terrain of old, and the reimagined nostalgic set up's in the new Warhammer: The Old World books, here's how I created a classic looking table.

I think scatter terrain really makes the table look special. I know I see a lot of complaints on the internet when battle reports don't have terrain clogging up the middle of the field, but if you know historical battles it was actually exceedingly rare for armies to face off with large woods and towns in-between them, and I don't care for overdoing it myself. But scatter terrain makes the battlefield look interesting and busy, without hogging up the already limited table space.
Yep I completely agree, and I think I’m going to work on some more, especially under the 2” guidelines.
"If it's under two inches, it doesn't really have an effect on the game". I should really grow up :D ... i can't wait to see some games being played on that board, it looks great and everything fits in perfectly!
😂 I had to stop myself making jokes during the video.
Very nice board, it looks perfect for Old World
Hope you do some of the special pieces you mentioned
Thank you dude 🙂
Where you did get all those trees collection from?
Just a collection I’ve slowly built up over the years, can’t remember buying half of them.
I would love for Games-workshop to re-release the old Citadel wood. I've searched through so many model railroad trees and none have that same distinct shape; low to the ground, flat bottom, dome shape.
Yeah they’re were lovely, I can see them being back the plastic one maybe, but nothing older than that.
I feel proper inspired now
Cheers dude 🙂
I would like to have one just like this and then add some bigger Terrain for my high elves on marble / stone bases and some high and snowy Mountain for my dwarfs! Very good work yes, simple and fast video, thanks for the work!
Thank you 😊
Was going to ask how the WS mat would hold up as a normal battle mat but seeing all the white poking through after a bit of handling answers that fir me I think.
I've got a collection of 6x4 neoprene mats (and a double-sided cloth one from Geek Villain that's a bit crap) but as my table is an 8x4 it's normally a 9x5 fleece throw that I bought off of amazon and dyed (badly) that gets the most use. I built a load of hills and things but as I can place those UNDER the fleece I got lazy and they're still bare polystyrene several years later. But that's me in general; a great buyer or starter of terrain but a poor finisher.
I’ve got a large mix myself, including neoprene and Geek Villain where I place hills under as well (tend to keep that for historical rule sets where the definition of terrain isn’t so important.
Awesome looking table and some great ideas here. I’ve gotta ask- where did you get those trees from? They’re the perfect size, ready to use straight away, and I can’t find anything like them anywhere!
Thank you. They’re usually found at model railway shops, or shops that sell that kind of models kits.
Great video Stu. Really love your terrain and the game table as a whole. Have you had any experience with Tabletop World resin terrain? They certainly make them look good in the website and their recent Kickstarter…so much so I went with a couple of cottages and a well as I’m distinctly lacking in terrain other than some Graveyard pieces and stone walls (plus some very old flocked trees)
I really love the GW terrain as well but it isn’t always easy to get in stock.
Very clever with the forests too showing their footprint and being able to remove the trees to accommodate any units in there
Thank you. I’ve looked at Tabletop World loads of times, it looks lovely, just never bought anything.
Looks wonderful and a well presented very polished video, a good watch. I was thinking about hills recently and i think if i build any they will be deployment zone/board-edge only ones with a flat backside, i think hills, especially in the centre of the board, really interfere with the game outside of being used to give ranged units an offensive and defensive boost.
I think you’re totally right to a point, it the odd one getting in the way can make for interesting tactical challenge. I do like them on the edges though, always seem to have armies with war machines crying out for them 😂
This looks beautiful! Did you apply any kind of sealant to the mat afterwards? How does it hold up to rolling?
Thank you. 🙂 I haven’t sealed it yet, but may give it a light spray to stop any of the really loose bits coming off.
Looks great. Going to pinch this idea for a simple Bolt Action mat. How durable is it once its rolled up a few times?
Thank you. I’ve not rolled it up much, it’s definitely not something I’d advice for club play or heavy use of rolling and unrolling, but that’s more because it doesn’t shed a little grass. But I’ve found it’s fine to be gently rolled up when I need to.
Bloody awesome! I love seen custom terrain it’s look great
Thank you 😊
Nicely done! I however will stick to my neoprene matt :p It has more overall uses.
Oh absolutely, and I’ve got loads of those and felt ones as well.
Alright i bought one, yours looks too good!
Thank you
Awesome looking table you have there.
Cheers dude 🙂
That’s a great idea for the woods, you can remove the trees to move units through but still see the boundary of it, I am definitely stealing this when i make a gaming table 👍🏻
Definitely makes it so much easier
Awesome!! Absolutely love it 👍🏻
Thank you 😊
Is not "Valeoh", it's "Vajeho"
👍
awesome! really inspiring!
Thank you 😊
Aweeesome 😇😇😇
Thank you 🙂
im looking at making my own board soon, wots the best wood to use as a base cos the misses wants me to use chip board (cheap) whereas i want to use mdf
I’m not the best with woodwork, but MDF will be much stronger and last longer (the edges of chip board can get dented very easily).
@@MiniatureRealms yeah that's wot I said to her but she's the boss lol
@skinniestfatman5641 😂
smashed it
Thank you 😊
Simple effects applied to great affect, that table looks ace, Stu.
Thank you dude 🙂
Love it!
Thank you 🙂
Чудесно! 🤩
Thank you 🙂
I really like this table build; really well applied, yet relatively simple techniques for a great finish!
Thank you Jordan, it just about came out the way I had planned it (which isn’t always the case 😅).
Thats a great landscape. Your method for woods is brilliant. Aesthetically pleasing and Conducive to gameplay. See so many games where woods and unit interaction looks horribly clunky and disjointed.
Thank you 😊
love this...ive recently built my very first 6x4 board and glued a layer of tile grout over the polystyrene base.. all i got to do is add the fine woodland scenics flock (2 colours) and im all done...ive put that off as im ''scared'' i could balls it up at the last stage......tho id never hav thought to use the air brush on it if needs be or the hills ...cheers
Thank you. Your board sounds great, the flocking stage is certainly messy, but you’ll be fine I’m sure.
I'm inspired! I frequently go back to old White Dwarf issues for old ideas. Ready to follow your steps! Great work as always Thank you!
Thank you 😊
Looks really cool, I have a suitable Matt, hills and trees. Some of those kits coming back would be really cool though.
I really hope they do, I can’t imagine they won’t bring back anything, but who knows.
Looks great! Super excited for Old World myself. I can remember looking at my warhammer fantasy rule book at all the great pictures as a kid and dreaming someday i'll make a table like in those pictures!
Thank you. Yes those rulebook and white dwarf pictures are so inspiring.
You made me think it was a Saturday releasing on a Friday instead! Epic work dude and keep it up, loving all this old world content and would love to see more terrain etc
Thank you 😊
Ive had some of those hills for years. I tend to use bushes amongst the ricks to liven them up, but i might have a think about something like what youve done.
I love that old scenery, it’s great that it can still be used today and not look terribly out of place.
That Diorama FX really tops it off, nice job.
Thank you 😊
Great video! I love the castle along one table edge adds a level of depth to the game.
Thank you. Played a few games with it there and it’s a great backdrop.
Really enjoyed this - a great way of modernising a classic look board.
Thank you 😊
This looks so good and easy! Gotta do this for a cheap and quick table!
Thank you 🙂
Wow, very well done, congrats!😎👍
Thank you 😊
Would definitely be interested in a part 2 on water features!
Awesome, I’ve added that to my list for the future.
Excellent video. Just what I needed!
Thank you 😊
