    Today we’re exploring the language of one of the greatest empires that ever ruled - Khmer language, the official language of Cambodia and once the language of the mighty Khmer empire. Those were the guys who built Angkor Wat for example - the biggest temple complex in the world. With such a history, Khmer language doesn't lack interesting features!

    I worked in Cambodia for seven years and eventually got good enough to give technical lectures in Khmer. The two hardest things about learning it are (1) the lack of a standardized system of transliteration, because even though you need to learn the writing system eventually, it's so hard that learning basic vocabulary and simple conversation directly in the Khmer script is super slow if you do not have a transliteration. There are multiple systems, none of which are great. and (2) all the subtly different vowel sounds - they take lots of practice. A French text for learning Khmer had great advice about getting all those vowels right - "la persistence vaut mieux que l'acharnement - very true, if you stick with it, the vowels will come eventually. The best books for learning, I think, are a series of books on the spoken and written language by Franklin Huffman, starting with "Modern Spoken Cambodian" and "Cambodian System of Writing and Beginning Reader" and continuing to more advanced anthologies of interesting Khmer texts with vocabulary and notes.

      I learned some Thai a few years ago, a language which also has a complicated spelling system, and I found it was easier to just learn the spellings as they are without worrying why they happen to be that way (for example sometimes a vowel is written with its own character, other times just implied. There are many silent letters. And there are multiple ways of writing the same sounds. It's like when you learn French there are accents on some words eg «contrôle» but not on others... Still very complicated though!

    For additional information as a native speaker:
    Khmer doesn't have plural. You just need to tell the number of things or add the words like group, those, these...to the nouns or repeat the syllables. Example: Khmeng= kid/child ; Khmeng Khmeng = children.... So when you say Chkae Thom Thom, it means "big/large dogs (as in plural)" more than "large dog (as in emphasize the large) ".
    Most vocabularies in Thai and Lao are derived from Khmer and Khmerized Sanskrit, and Khmerized Pali. That's how Thai and Lao got their Sanskrit and Pali influence words. That's the reason Khmer speakers can understand at least a bit of Thai and Lao without learning them.

    • @ใจเหงาๆ-ห3ฑ
      @ใจเหงาๆ-ห3ฑ ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes, it's very similar. Whether it's Thai, Lao and Khmer, for example, if you can speak Lao. You will be able to speak Thai as well. because they have the same Derived Personally, I'm a true Thai, born in the central region until one day I visited Laos..I could understand 90% of the Lao language spoken by native people

    Su Sdei and Namaste everyone, It is interesting that Khmer script shares many of the inherent order and sounds of the alphabet with the traditional Indian alphabets( we have currently about 22 official "native" ones which are born in India, leaving Latin and Perso-Arabic script, more scripts are to be made official in the coming years like Modi script for Marathi, Tigalari script for Tulu, Khudabadi script for Sindhi).
    So, it would be very comparatively easy for us Indians to learn it since it's a simple abugida, rather than even Thai, which has tonal markings compounding the script.
    The Khmer language sounds very full of consonant clusters and the script looks like royal Naga maidens, twisting in serpentine gaits. We Indians would love to see more historical dramas relating to our brotherly nations of Burma, Thailand, Laos, Indo-Malay and Khmer cultures. We all have beautiful histories, unique cultures and intangible heritage that we must cherish and be proud of.
    May peace prevail in all realms.

    • @cjsopheaktra2422
      @cjsopheaktra2422 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, initially, although Khmer language has its own sound and word, it loaned the script from Nagari script, and later on, the script developed from time to time until nowadays. And Thai and Lao scripts loaned from the developed scripts by Khmer, and continued to develop on its own. We did loan the script, however, the sound of language and writing system still remain in Khmer way, making it to have different sound and writing system.

    That's a very interesting video, there are a few corrections over the words that I noticed:
    For 09:01 it should be ឆ្កែធំ , you may unintentionally added an ា in between.
    For: 09:13 It should be: ឆ្កែធំៗ
    We don't write the same adjective twice, but we use this "ៗ" instead. "ៗ" (but for an exception: there is any word etc. that we write នានា)
    09:59, for the verb eat:
    First one: ស៊ី
    Second: ញុំា
    These correction doesn't have any bad intention, we're learning something new so mistaken are there to be made.
    Thank again for the interesting video about our language.

    Thank you for making this video! I had requested a video on the Khmer language. It doesn’t get enough attention. Recently, I have been very interested in Cambodian Rock music, especially music by Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Serey Sothea, and Pen Ran. They were singers in the 1960s and early 1970s. If anyone is unfamiliar with their music, I would definitely recommend listening to it. There is a documentary about Cambodian Rock music called Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten. There is also a graphic novel about Ros Serey Sothea’s life that is being made currently. It’s called The Golden Voice. Again, thank you for the video, and I definitely recommend checking out some Cambodian Rock music.

    Just a minor correction when you wrote the word large dog: it is written ឆ្កែធំ and not ឆ្កែាធំ both the symbols ែ (making roughly the sound ae) and ា (making the sound a) are dependent vowels and those two dependent vowels cannot be linked to the same consonant (in this case ឆ) at the same time. It’s a minor mistake and really doesn’t take away from the great video. As a Khmer person who likes to do a lot of research on the Khmer language I’m really happy with the video, awesome work.

    I knew basically nothing about this language before watching this video. I find it interesting that a language can get so influenced by ones it's not related to, and it's good to learn that the root cause of a writing system seeming cumbersome is typically because the pronunciation heavily evolved and the spelling wasn't changed to accommodate. It's also surprising to hear an East/Southeast Asian language without tones that isn't Korean or Japanese.

    Thank you so much for this wonderful video. As a native khmer speaker, I'm always in awe whenever I see foreigners speak this language. It is very hard for us to follow all the grammar rules due to a big array of irregularities. We have numerous ways of saying one thing. Like mentioned in the video, there are different ways to say "eat" and those words shown in the video is just a very small number lol.

    As I recall as I had to learn all Khmer alphabets and the rest. It took me a while trying to learn it in my first and second grade. I find it much easier to learn English faster than Khmer. As I also had to learn French in my 4th grade, I had no problem learning English later on. We will never stop learning until the last breath. Sharing is caring. Cheers 🍷

    Knowing just little bit of Khmer script has been helpful for when my ear doesn't pick up the vowel sounds and also for memorizing the words.
    O have all but forgotten how to read even the simplest text but I had two difficulties when learning to read. 1) If I didn't know the words already, I had difficulty determining which letters were silent and where the next word would start in order to look it up in dictionary. (which Is itself more complicated than dictionaries of Romance languages 2. I had difficulties of guessing the pronunciations of certain words of Bali/Sanskrit origin which lacked the special markings.
    I am not sure if all vowel sounds in speech stay true to their written forms. I did ask once and the native speaker said that the sound is the same despite them technically being different, depending on words surrounding it.
    Spoken and written, formal words can be quite different, so it takes more time to learn as a beginner. For example, the formal word 'pram-pi' in the market can be pronounced as pram-pal, m-pal, or just pal.

    This is a very interesting video and covers so much of the historical background of the Khmer language. As a 31 year resident of Cambodia and having worked countrywide in construction, Khmer is now my dominate 2nd language. There is one thing that must not be forgotten and that is the rather diminished level of formal education of the Khmer language in the provinces and the further one goes into the provinces the at times extreme levels of accents and the basic pronunciation of the language that is used in provincial Khmer language can be very difficult to understand even for Phnom Penh formally educated Cambodians. If one learns formal spoken Khmer in Phnom Penh don't be surprised if your not understood in the outer provinces. You'll be greeted in silence, because its perceived because your a foreigner that you can't speak Khmer. The one speaking to will ask another Cambodian what did you say and answer will be given that your speaking Khmer then the realisation hits home, yes your speaking Khmer and conversation can proceed. Over the years I've been asked so many times is it difficult to learn Khmer and the best answer I could honestly give is that the Khmer spoken language is difficult by its simplicity. Such a contradiction really explains how the spoken language is structured due to the influences from where the speaker learnt to speak and in general market talk. I.E. counting backwards, 16 - dop bram moi -formal - bram moin dop - spoken. Ask any cop the colours of a traffic light and he'll tell you a green light is blue. Ask a seller in the market what a plastic dish made from they'll say metal (steel). Ask what a copper vase or copper pipe is is made from and they'll say brass. Ask in a restaurant what an octopus is called and they'll say squid and so the list goes on and on. Khmer is my 5th Language and after a month's class tuition 31 years ago I gave up to learn Khmer on site from the labourers as in general their level of education was quite low, many couldn't read or write the language and pronunciation varied greatly. but in order to train them it was important that the lessons were given over in the basic structure of their spoken language. After 31 years its still a learning curve. I may have a profound conversation in Khmer and the one I'm speaking with will say they're very impressed that I speak Khmer so clearly, then the next person I meet will have great difficulty in understanding me, particularly if I'm joking because foreigners don't know how to joke in the Khmer language anyway. The best thing is not to stop learning because its all very, very subjective on whom your conversing with and not take any rejection as being demeaning. A Cambodian university trained friend of mine gets totally pissed off when market people don't understand her and I mean gets really upset because they won't listen to what she's asking and ask her to repeat.

      @Asahi Ogawa Regarding studying Khmer from a novel, that's quite an accomplishment to undertake and the best of luck in doing so. However the written Khmer language is not the spoken Khmer language which makes studying Khmer proficiently all the more difficult. This is why I concentrated on spoken Khmer as that's what is used daily to communicate with in market language. I can assure you you'll a long way in doing so, but don't drop your written studies because of it.

      I had a friend who took Khmer lessons while I (still) learn by asking people how to say what I need to say. She got angry with me when I told her that I pronounce "ice" as "tuk-ah" but when she asks for ice they don't know what she is saying and I am served ice. I vowed then to never take classes. I have lived in Cambodia for 16 years and get complimented on my pronunciation regularly. However, I don't consider myself fluent at all because most people speak English with me so I am not immersed like you were in the countryside.

      @@stevegunn9971 I am not sure about that because besides English, there is none of the SEA languages is used widely in other country. Khmer and Vietnamese are in the same family but it hardly to understand each other due to influence of Chinese on Vietnamese, and Khmer has loaned many words from Sanskrit. But for Thailand and Laos, Thai and Laotian languages are in the same family so many of vocabularies and grammar system is similar. And Bahasa Indonesian and Malaysian are in the same family so they might be similar, plus Bahasa Indonesian might be spoken by many people in Indonesia since the country has the biggest number of populations in SEA.

      I don't know about Khmer specifically, but I did learn basic Thai which also has a lot of Sanskrit-Pali vocabulary. The Indian words tend to be used for more sophisticated vocabulary, a bit like Greek and Latin in English, but Sanskrit grammar would be totally different to Thai or Khmer grammar, lots of inflections, word endings etc which don't really exist in Thai or Khmer

      When I was first learning Thai I was unaware of the Sanskrit influence at first, but was still able to pick up on some words that seemed awfully Indo-European to me. It was only after I asked about it that I was informed about the Sanskrit influence. The Sanskrit borrowings tend to be rather high language relating to things like religion and/or royalty, and are pretty easy to distinguish because normal Thai is pretty exclusively monosyllabic. I never saw any evidence of Indo-European influence outside of the high vocabulary. Although more recently, of course, Thai has picked up a lot of loan words from English, and even a little from French. These are much more likely to be heard in ordinary, everyday speech.
