- The WolfQuest Saga is now in public beta on Steam! See instructions at bottom of this post for instructions on how to switch to the public beta branch. If you'd rather wait until the full release, that's fine, it won't be too long!
But first, a couple things:
The Saga is in good shape, but there's a chance that it might break an existing save or family tree, so please make a backup of your User Files folder. Just copy and paste the whole folder onto your desktop or wherever you like.
Windows: Documents/My Games/Wolf Quest Anniversary/User Files
Mac: [YourUserDirectory]/Wolf Quest Anniversary/User Files
Now most important: Treat the Saga like it's a new game! While much of the game is the same, the Saga brings many changer to existing gameplay and features, along with the new Saga quests and gameplay. Don't assume that everything works exactly how it did before. Please peruse the Game Help (now available in the main menu of the game), especially the new About the Saga section. It's pretty long, but if you're wondering if something you're seeing in the game is a bug or intentional, that's a good place to check. The Game Help is also much improved in general, with better entries about various gameplay features.
Similarly, even if you have logged hundreds of hours logged in the game, be sure to enable Tutorials and Common Notifications in Game Settings, as those will give you important information when you reach something that's new or different.
Now a few tips about Saga gameplay:
You really want to prioritize your wolf's health. Without good health, everything else becomes much harder, including keeping your pups and packmates alive and healthy.
Your yearlings and subordinates are not duplicates of your mate. They won't help much with marking territory (that's the job of the pack leaders). They will help hunt, but if they see enough other wolves taking on the risks, they're happy to freeride and get an easy meal without taking damage.
Your packmates will eat reguritant if they're hungry, but they'll wait until the pups of the year have mostly filled up. They're pretty polite about that, but not totally polite.
Sickness and low health is extra dangerous for pups now. Sick pups move slowly, as do pups with low health -- they're not speedy if you woof them into the den during a pup raid, and can be picked off by predators more easily.
Don't expect all of your pups to survive, even on Easy difficulty. That's not the way of the wild.
If you come across a bug, please do use the in-game Bug Reporter! And pleeease give us a lot of details, don't just say "mate isn't working right" -- tell us what you were doing, what's happening, and what you expected to happen.
You can load a saved game in Loaf at Rendezvous Site or Endless Summer quests and carry on into the Saga quests -- but it's not a bad idea to start a new game to try out the Saga, and we don't recommend playing on Accurate difficulty this first time either. (And if you do, expect that things can get hairy.)
So there it is! The Saga is in public beta, on Steam. If you're interested, check it out!

TO GET THE BETA BUILD
1) In the Steam app, go to your Library, then right-click on the WolfQuest: AE name in the left column and choose Properties.
2) Then go to the Betas tab and select the WQ current Beta option in the pulldown. No password is necessary. Steam should then start downloading it. Later you can switch back to the public version in that Betas tab, by selecting NONE in that pulldown.

THIS IS SERIOUSLY THE FIRST TIME A GAME WITH A BIG UPDATE COMING ACTUALLY RELEASES THE UPDATE WITHOUT FALLING APART BEFORE!! OMG IM SO EXCITED :)
Nahhhh, probably will be one of the very few times they release a major update without putting it all behind a DLC though.
Baldurs Gate 3, would be one of those games that release a massive update without falling apart. The update was basically a love letter to the community. Which will honestly help maintain their fanbase for when they release their new games in the future.
Valheim is another good game I've heard from my friends(not too sure on the games reputation) where the dev team keeps making good updates without putting things behind a paywall. I've just started playing the game this week and I've been enjoying it. :)

I probably should've rephrased the comment anyways, the first time *I* saw an update/game not just take forever and eventually lose all of its community.
3 come to my mind immediately, though all of them were in development.
one was really ambitious and is STILL in development after 3 years, one was almost done but they scrapped it to rehaul it and the team fell apart and it's not being developed, and the dev team also fell apart on another and only the demo was released. (now that i think about it there are some that still did release big updates though, like rain world. hollow knight... still to be decided).

As someone who has been in the wq community from the days of 'meet wolves in all three territories before getting a mate', before exp or anniversary edition was even a thing, i have been awaiting this day for like a decade at his point.
The amount of child like excitement i get hearing this makes me wish I could go back in time and just bounce around happily with my child self or something

Same, I've always loved nature and animals, and as a kid I was completely absorbed by the concept of wolfquest. I ran it on an old Dell that was basically a microwave at 20 fps on low settings if I was lucky. Now I'm 26 and I have my own gaming laptop so needless to say my inner child is hyped 😂

It makes me so happy how excited people get about Wolfquest :) I started playing when I was 7 or 8 years old. Now I am 23 and am studying to become a paralegal in a trial lawyer internship program. So you're not the only Wolfquest loving law student. The developers are so awesome.

In all seriousness, it’s insane how far this game has come since it first launched. I started playing circa 2009 or so, and the progress and development from those early graphics (which were really quite good at the time of release!) to this robust, lively world with intricate details is astounding. Even the gameplay itself is incredible when you consider how much research has been done to make it realistic instead of “just another animal game.” You’ve balanced realism with entertainment, and there really, TRULY, is not another game out there that has been so focused on adhering to such a specific goal and I’m certain none who have tried have been anywhere near as successful.
I know there’s still work to do before it exits the Beta stage, but I hope once it’s all done and is released as the “final” product, you can all take time to celebrate and congratulate yourselves for the amazing work you’ve done. Your goal was to educate and teach young adults about the life of a wild wolf, and you have undoubtedly, unequivocally succeeded beyond what anyone could have ever expected.
Finding WolfQuest, quite by accident, was delightful as a child and as an adult, the respect and admiration I have for the entire team is unmatched. Congratulations and well done, Team WQ.

I played "Wolf" back on DOS, found that game in a bargain bin at the time and enjoyed it so much, I played it all the time!

It is very chaotic
The original Wolfquest game has followed me through my childhood and made my tough life at home a little bit more bearable. I remember waking up at 2am in the morning to go sit down with my energy-drink and snacks, create my lobby and wait for my RP pack-mates to arrive, and boy did we have a blast every single day! So many friendships were formed through that game, i created my own pack, i even had my own website for it (And the website still stands today) and we all just became so close. One person i met in the original Wolfquest is still in my life today, over 10 years later.
This game has changed my life, it was my happy-place and i loved it so much! It is more than just a game for me, it is a piece of my childhood, a sentimental memory that i love to think back to and sometimes wish i had those times back.
I want to thank the WolfQuest team, including the QA team, for all the work and hours put into this and i am so thankful that the WolfQuest game was not abandoned, but reincarnated as what it is now! I think i speak for a lot of people when i say that this has become a piece of our hearts, something we grew up with and found our comfort in when times were harsh. I can't wait to play and experience what i dreamt would be possible as a kid!

I just went through a Saga play session in Accurate. In the span of a few in-game days, I have gone from a parent of 7 to a parent of 3. I am absolutely devastated. 10/10

SHOOOOT IM AT WORK 😭 omg this was my childhood DREAM for my pups to grow up. OMG i am so excited!! im actually in tears right now. i started playing this game in the very first game when it was just a small little play through from a wolf sanctuary page- we actually had a teacher tell us about it. man i mustve only been in 3rd or 4th grade or so. im 23 now with a fulltime job and a household of my own. i grew up right alongside this game, this is truly beautiful. thank you all for giving us this experience
Alright, guys, the saga is intense! I’m playing as a accurate Iron Wolf, and it’s a whole new game. I used to know all the patterns, but now it’s unpredictable! Predator attacks are relentless, and once the pups hit 25 lbs, it gets brutal. You have to hunt every single day no time to heal, barely surviving on scraps. I LOVE IT! Finally, a real challenge! Just 3 pups survived out of 6. But i love my yearlings! Now i am doing it all over again but now i have yearlings they help me out a lot!
I'm already on my third litter, and when two of my pups dispersed as yearlings (one through simply moving out and the other through a dispersal bonding and becoming mates to form a pack) IT FELT SO REWARDING!! I felt so proud for my pups, but for the first time it felt sad. When my first pup dispersed, it was a little heart wrenching for me. Got me so emotional, it makes me feel like a parent letting go of their children to be independent.
I can't stop playing the Saga!
@@climbingamountain86 I’m now 5 years old, and none of my pups have dispersed yet. Three managed to make it out of both nests, and now we’re raising our third litter. We still have six strong pups thriving at the rendezvous site! Hunting became soo much easier with 8 wolves
@@Meo.Melody Indeed! And those coyotes and cougars leave quickly from the den after seeing so many wolves at the den or site. Our packs are thriving!

I can't believe they literally waited for the planets to align for this perfect update release. Pluto just moved from Capricorn into Aquarius after a 15-year cycle! This actually makes perfect sense from an astrological perspective, and it is so satisfying to have this update today. I can't wait to tell my friends!!!!

Edit: i just want to say ive been looking forward to this since forever. Ive been out of high school for 2 years now and i was so excited then too. Years of watching and getting excited has led me to this moment and im so glad its here
