  • Taiwan is headed for its Presidential Election on the 13th of January 2024. It could be the island’s most consequential contest yet. Looming large over the polls, is the spectre of intensifying US-China rivalry. Taiwan has become caught in a tug-of-war between the two superpowers. The main presidential candidates have made their positions on US and China relations a key part of their campaign messaging.
Meanwhile, across the strait, Chinese President Xi Jinping wants the People’s Liberation Army to be capable of invading the island by 2027, in the middle of the next Taiwan President’s term. There are also troubles on the domestic front. An export slump, stagnant wages, and inflation have created the slowest economic growth in eight years. It will be up to the next leader to turn the ship around.

4:46 Correct: the DPP advocates more for Taiwan who holds their own sovereignty. 4:52 The name that is called right now is "Taiwan, R.O.C. (Republic of China)", or “Republic of China (Taiwan)”. *Please note that Taiwan has NEVER been called "Republic of Taiwan". This is absolutely a false statement. Source: me, a Taiwanese national from Taiwan, R.O.C. (It says on our passports. Same for postal addresses.) Thanks for y’all corrections and suggestions.

Hi guys I’m Tim Huang, who shows up at 28:05 and 45:57.
I saw a lot of comments here. No matter which side you supported, I am still happy to see that people are concerned about Taiwan’s situation and at least you are willing to spend your time and type some words.
I think democracy will testify itself through trial& error. But the circumstances which the youth are facing is still a crucial point and worth to be considered.

Good day, other than DPP, the Japanese right-wingers and the neo-cons, it can safely be said that the rest of Asia-Pac macro-region outside of the mainland wants to keep the status quo. 1 China, either PRC or ROC, with TW part of it.

I think the video is a little over dramatic, who wins will not change much. China has many internal problems, also Americans no longer trust China , we assume they are not telling the truth. Will Americans support Taiwan in the future... 25 years ago we trusted China now we don't, Democrat and Republican parties agree on this.

9:53 Please don't misinform the audience with "the 1992 Consensus" because it simply is a "meeting" and there was no "consensus". The "China" that PRC and ROC referred to were different entities, and also there was no room to tolerate each other's rhetoric. It is simply an excuse to be used to promote business influx from Taiwan to China. Even til this day, there is no consensus established. Hence, there is no consensus, not before, and certainly not today. (The script makes it sound so natural and determined. It is simply not true.)

Faced with the authoritarian and authoritarian Chinese model challenging the democratic system, which is the problem of bad currency driving out good currency. Democratic countries led by the United States must understand one fact: China's hundreds of millions of farmers paid public grain, agricultural taxes, and free water conservancy projects when they were young. After China's reform and opening up, farmers entered red sweatshops as workers, unable to obtain urban household registration, and unable to enjoy urban housing, medical care, education, and other welfare benefits with the minimum wage. The Chinese government utilizes the advantages of low human rights and cheap labor to attract a large amount of international financial capital investment, making China the world's largest red sweatshop. That is why products produced in China compete unfairly in the global market at prices lower than market cost. To change this unfair situation, democratic countries led by the United States have a responsibility to urge and pressure the Chinese government to improve the human rights and welfare protection of the majority of lower class Chinese people. US trade sanctions and EU anti-dumping measures cannot solve the fundamental problem. Only when the human rights and welfare benefits of most Chinese farmers and workers are improved can labor rights and market competition in both the United States and the European Union be protected from harm. If the human rights and welfare standards of Chinese farmers and workers cannot gradually match those of American workers, then the human rights and welfare standards of American workers can only gradually match those of Chinese farmers and workers. Therefore, the democratic countries led by the United States have the responsibility to help all Chinese farmers and workers at the bottom speak out for their human rights, and cannot only emphasize the human rights situation in Xinjiang, Xizang, Hong Kong and dissidents, Only by improving the human rights of the majority of Chinese people at the bottom can we maintain fair competition worldwide, which is an unavoidable issue for us in the context of globalization, as we are all citizens of the earth.

Wow how arrogant are you. The west does know and understand history and that includes history of the island of Taiwan.
Originally it was occupied by 16 tribes of indigenous Taiwanese. China showed no interest in the island. Then the Spanish decided to take the island until the Dutch took it of them. At that point the Qing dynasty took it from the Dutch and ruled the island bring it under imperial rule. The Qing then lost it to the Imperial Japanese won won it in the sino-japanese war. The Qing signed over Formosa to the Japanese in perpetuity (long word meaning forever).
Imperial china collapsed after the disastrous opium wars leading china into civil war between KMT and the communists.
Ww2 started with Japan invading mainland China and soon after Germany & Italy starting war in Europe. Japan made a surprise attack on usa shore at pearl harbour bring in the then neutral Americans. The war which was going will initially for the axis powers of Germany, Italy and Japan turned. With Germany and Italy losing Europe and finally Japan surrendering to the allies. In the Asian theatre, Japan was forced to conced Formosa which was given the the ruling Republic of China (ROC).
Return of civil war to china saw bloody fighting with the ruling ROC retreating to the island of Formosa and the communists forming the people's Republic of China (PRC).
At no point in history has the PRC ever ruled the island formally known as Formosa, now known as Taiwan. During the reign of chairman Mao, he started the cultural revolution, where china denounced its 5000 year history and therefore also denounced its prior imperial ownership of the island!!

Depends on how the USA wants to play its Taiwan card against China. A US military deployment in Taiwan, especially armed with long range missiles (nuclear or otherwise), as well as permanent US military bases on Taiwan-held islands in the SCS / Taiwan Straits, would serves as one of the trigger points, that demands a robust Chinese "special operation" in Taiwan. Of course, the other “Rubicon line” would be for the ruling party in Taiwan to declare its independence from PRC China, and/or for the Taiwan military to acquire nuclear weapon capability. Any weak responses by the PRC government would not be acceptable to the Chinese people, which oblige the political leaderships in Beijing to act on behalf of the People’s aspiration (Reunification).

China was being colonized by the Manchurians from the north when the Qing Dynasty gained partial control of Taiwan from Ming Dynasty remnants, who had only partial control of Taiwan. During most of the Qing Dynasty, it was not a Chinese government that controlled only about half of Taiwan. They were Manchurians, not Chinese. The other half of Taiwan was in the hands of the aborigine tribes and not completely subjugated until the arrival of the Japanese.

In a so-called "democratic" society, the people have no real ideas, only ideas manipulated by political figures. Before 1992, even if there had been a war between the mainland and Taiwan, Taiwanese people did not have the willingness to become independent. Taiwanese people claimed to be "upright Chinese people." So what do Taiwanese people really want? Which time period does this need to be from?

@ 8:20 or there about, the video stated that the KMT, who originated in Mainland China, "fled and settled in Taiwan". The video failed to mention what/who was in Taiwan at the time. Was Taiwan an uninhabited island before 1949? If no, then who lived there? How long had they been there before the KMT arrived in 1949? Did they come from somewhere else? Did the local inhabitants welcome the KMT? Did the KMT get along with the local inhabitants? Has anyone else been inhabiting Taiwan? Local aboriginies? The Dutch? The Portuguese? The Spaniards?
To disregard (perhaps mistakenly forgetting to mention) the fact that Taiwan had local inhabitants with a vibrant culture and a large community before 1949 makes any attempt to explain the background of the relationship of Taiwan to China useless.

Why shouldn't U.S. play the Taiwan card? They definitely should. Did China permanently cede Taiwan to Japan with signing of the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895? Yes. Was China able to defend itself from Japan during WWII without American military assistance? No. Did China send a single soldier during WWII to reclaim Taiwan or Okinawa from Japan? No. So China gave Taiwan away for good, wasn't able to defend itself during WWII not to mention send a single soldier to reclaim Taiwan (but U.S. did). Now China can't even convince the Taiwanese to so-call "unify" with them because Taiwanese are like hell no! You sold us out to Japan, now you point missiles at us, call us traitors (when you are the sell out), demand other countries cut diplomatic ties with us. The Chinese Communist Party declared PROC independent from ROC in 1949, then supported Taiwan independence from ROC for over 50 years after ROC lost China and KMT government fled to Taiwan. Now they want what? "reunification"? Don't think so! You Chinese got yourselves to blame for this one.

Once Tsmc is fully operational in US and the chips manufacturing is secured in US soil, the US will not mind using Taiwan to fight a proxy war with China; even if Tsmu is destroyed in the process either by China, or by US or by Taiwan. The US will not land any troops on Taiwan, just like Ukrania, US will only send advisors and sell arms to Taiwan. The US may place 2 strike force groups on the east side sea of Taiwan, just like what they did in the sea outside Gaza. The intention of the strike forces is to create fear in China, but in the end it will be used to evacuate the supporters of US. The end result, China loses some, Taiwan loses even more, and US gets to collect money from the sale of arms to Taiwan. Taiwan people if you don't war, please vote wisely.

On the surface the Russia/Ukraine situation is similar to the China/Taiwan situation but the situation in Asia is not likely to lead to a war. Both China and Taiwan are fairly successful economically. People in neither place want war. The other factor is that China has not fought a war for decades. Without recent combat experience the PLA is probably very risk averse and won't easily follow orders to attack.

What business does China got to do with an island Taiwan that have their own government, own flag and their own history???
Those Koumentang just escaped to that island. Formosa/Taiwan have their own Indigenous people majority related to the Pacific islands especially the Philippines (Batanes and Igorot tribes). I grew up in one of those Pacific islands called Panay/Iloilo City. We are part of the Philippines but we have our own government, indigenous people, culture, dialect and history different from Manila. We have 7,600+ islands. We don't send arrows and guns to the next islands. Them Chinese something else. Many of them became greedy and pirated the whole Pacific ocean. Praying for safe election in Taiwan 🇹🇼. We are here open for all of you if them CCP make a bad move.

You really need to read the history of Taiwan again. Taiwan is almost entirely Han Chinese. The indigenous people form about 2% of the total population and are heavily sinicized. Maybe I am not 100% correct but definitely close to 100%.
