  • Taiwan is a place of incredible variety. The tiny island’s natural beauty is a concentration of some of Asia’s most spectacular features. To the east, there are sheer cliffs with mountain peaks, plateaus and hot springs. To the south, you’ll find sandy beaches, coral reefs and lagoons.
Although the Taiwanese live in a high-tech world, they are still firmly anchored by ancient traditions. During the course of his life, Lin Liang-tai has created many elaborately adorned wooden boats. But they’re not built to last, as they’re destined for Taiwan’s legendary Wang Ye Festival. As part of the temple ceremony to honor the goddess of the sea, a 10-meter boat is blessed, loaded with offerings and pulled through the village down to the beach. There, it’s set alight, burning any evil spirits that might be lurking about the place.
Shrimps are all the rage in Taiwan. In large halls across the entire island, shrimps can be fished out of huge tanks and put straight on the barbecue. Zhan Jia-ming runs one of these popular shrimp halls, and tips bucketloads of fresh shrimps into the tanks every hour.
Oysters are a mainstay of Taiwanese cuisine, whether boiled, fried or made into oyster sauce. On the west coast, oyster farms sustain entire village communities. In Fangyuan, we see one oyster farmer still using traditional methods to harvest his oysters. He drives ox-drawn carts onto the tidal flats, just as it has been done for generations. In the fishing village of Dongshi, several tons of oysters are harvested, opened and processed every day.
Taiwan’s relations with the mainland have often been strained since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Beijing regards the island as part of its territory. Tensions have been on the rise in recent times. Tsai Jin-lu is a committed birdwatcher. For years, he’s documented his rare bird sightings in the Aogu Wetlands Forest Park on the western coast of Taiwan. But these days, his binoculars are frequently trained on something much bigger, up in the skies above. That’s because this is where the Taiwan carries out fighter jet exercises almost every day.

      DW不要再欺骗世界了,台湾的真名叫中华民国,台湾只是一个中国内战割据政权的一个省,请你不要再叫台湾是国家了。台湾不在联合国不是因为中国大陆打压,是因为他不是国家才进不了联合国。
DW stop deceiving the world, Taiwan's real name is the Republic of China, Taiwan is just a province of a Chinese civil war regime, please stop calling Taiwan a country. Taiwan's absence from the United Nations is not because the Chinese mainland suppressed it, but because it is not a country and cannot enter the United Nations.@@DWDocumentary

May I ask you a taboo question? I'm Taiwanese American and I cannot understand why people say Taiwan is friendly? It definitely is not. Everyone ignores me there and treats me like I don't exist. There's no eye contact with strangers. The girls and women are HOSTILE and treat me like a creep or criminal if I talk to them. Bad social vibes everywhere. What's the problem and why the universal LIE? It makes me wonder if reality is even real if everyone lies or if I'm in some kind of dream where everyone is a demon trying to play tricks on my mind. Any logical explanation? I'm very outgoing and have been to 14 countries and have good social skills so I know the problem isn't me. Must be with Taiwan.

Taiwan has it all. My first time in Taiwan was 1972-73 spent a year at the Stanford Center and taught some English at night. Later, after getting married in San Francisco (wife, from HK, was classmate at Berkeley) we went back and I worked for the National Palace Museum (1977-78). Great food, good friends. Our daughter was born in Taipei at the Women's Hospital using LaMaze (total cost US$350 and we stayed there and ate there 2 days). We lived at the top of a hill past the museum. Like to go back.

I watched 2 different taiwanese travel shows produced by the Taiwanese, it's very different from this DW documentary. I guess they are focusing on what the local can explore within their own country. I remember somewhere in the middle of east Coast, there is a famous coral reef and vacation rentals. I hope DW will cover the Taiwanese indigenous people eho has it's own costume and dialect, they are called the Alisun Who mostly lives on the mountain 🏔️

It's a magnificent piece of documentary, thank you for the effort to show the culture of Taiwan, however, the perspective of the film is more from ethnical Han Taiwanese . One thing may can be done better is to mention that we have diversity culture in Taiwan, not only Han Taiwanese, we also have indigenous Taiwanese and new migrants from Vietnam, Indonesia and so on. Taiwan is the country influenced by Chinese, Japanese and European due to the history, but start from that, we have integrated all the elements and created our multi-cultural aspect of Taiwanese culture. Just a warm reminder that Chinese culture is only part of Taiwanese culture, there are absolutely more treasures to be explored in Taiwan 😊😊

Shhhhhh, don't let in on the world's best kept secret! I've visited Taiwan 3 times whilst I was living in China for a decade- OMG, seriously the most underrated country on the planet!! Will never forget the friendly breakfast sandwich maker across the road from the Taoyuan railway station & his welcomes when I bought from him, and the breathtaking beauty of Jiuofen - OMG, I swear it's the Hawaii of the East!

Taiwan, a place under the shadow of China, a free land forced to have no identity in the international community, is always looking for love and attention from the Press. I hope in my lifetime, I can see, one day, that when people talk about Taiwan, it's who we are as a feature rich country that's being remembered, not how we have been suppressed, our geopolitical location, nor our semiconductor. We are another ordinary country like Korea, Vietnam, and Japan, that welcomes all visitors and immigrants.

I know that Taiwan ranks in the top 10 of the democracy index as one of the most democratic nations on earth. And I know that China ranks right at the bottom of the democracy index, has a long history of authoritarianism, imperialism and human rights abuses and somewhat ressembles the police state of George Orwell's '1984'. So it would be truly devastating for freedom, democracy and human rights, if China gets to do to Taiwan what Russia is trying to do to Ukraine 😔

🎉 Such a beauteous COUNTRY, people & culture! I wish FREEDOM, democracy, health & prosperity for 🇹🇼 til the end of time! ❤
I'm a documentary addict... This is 1st I've seen on everyday ppl, broad culture, non tech industry, societal staples, traditions & some history factoids new to me!!
SO refreshing & encouraging to see such cohesive culture, ancient traditions thriving by choice not force of elders/religion/govt, reverence of nature, strong community & family bonds dear to every1.... While still receptive to change, new things/people/ideas/technology.. & enviably 'chill' attitude?! 🤯 Very delicate balance many ancient cultures of middle & far east struggle to find or keep - teetering far to 1 end then far to the other, inevitably upsetting & alienating ppl in the process! Young western cultures struggle w/any or much balance.. 🇹🇼=GREAT teacher for the 🌏!!
Inspiring to see well adjusted, peaceful people.. [still 🤯@the 'honor system' $ in the box for corner bath?!].. Truly happy, thriving, living in harmony with/balancing old & new!! ❤🇹🇼
