Im an aries so im going for the big batch. Your instructions are detailed and straightforward. Very excited to do this as i already have so much dried peels!
My grandmother made these candies in the depression. She kept the tradition of a handful of nuts in the shell, a couple tangerines, and a LifeSavers book in our stockings.
Yes!!! My grandmother made beautifully painted marzipan fruits and candied orange and grapefruit peel. We always got a quarter and a tangerine in our stockings. During the Depression citrus was very hard to get, so these were a real treat. We still do this in our family. ♥️
I would imagine that the leftover sugar in the pan would have a wonderful citrus flavor that would be WONDERFUL for sweetening tea or something similar too!!!
Hi... I live in Brazil and started doing this because I missed the typical candied fruit and Chocolate cover orange peel from my Portuguese homeland; here it is difficult to find Candied fruit. I use them most for other fruit cakes, fruit jams or shortbread like cookies. So, because I need to keep them longer or add some flavours, here are some tips that work nice for that (if just consuming them immediately or for covering in chocolate the above is perfect): 1 - If you're not in a hurry, it is best to allow the sugar to penetrate slowly in the fruit substituting the water, because it helps to conserve it better. This is achieved by making 3 to 4, 5-10m boilings alowing to cool and rest at least a couple of hours in between boils. So , for 300-400 grams of peel it usually takes me 2 days (one boil in the morning, another in afternoon). The peels become very translucent and golden in the end. 2 - You can substitute part of the water for lime, lemon or orange sifted juice or both, Citric acid helps conserving and adds more pectin. 3 - I like to add a pinch or ground nutmeg or cinnamon to the sugar sirup if using this in cakes. 4 - Being from a Mediterranean country, I like to add a tsp or tbsp of fruity extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of salt. Olive oil combines exceedingly well with any kinds of nuty or citrus flavours. I end up with something very similar to a thick 'chutney' of orange peels with a thin film of citrusy and flavourful gelatin in between them, which conserves very well in the fridge.
Jorge Bizarro Thankyou for your suggestions, I will have to try them I have not made orange slices before, disappointed I through the peel out. I knew there had to be a use for them. did you see they can be a facial scrub also. You can find it on internet also.
This was a lot of fun to make with my 10 year old son! Thank you so much for the easy straight forward recipe! The oranges cooking filled our kitchen with the most wonderful aroma; one I will always attribute to the fall season and the holidays.❤️ After coating our dried orange peel in the granulated sugar we chopped some of them up into small pieces and added them to a batch of Yogurt Bark. Just 2 cups Greek yogurt, 1/4 cup honey and 1 tsp vanilla extract mixed and spread 1/4 inch thick on a parchment paper lined baking sheet, then sprinkle the top with the chopped candied orange peel, black sesame seeds and mini chocolate chips. Freeze and, once firm, break into pieces and enjoy. It makes a great Halloween treat!
I grew up eating candy orange, grapefruit, lemon, and lime peel and this the exact way my mom made them. She made several different types of things to coat them in so we'd have a wide variety to munch on... my favorite was when she made flavored sugar dips in all different colors.. that thin coating with that little crunch made these one of my favorite Christmas candies. ♥️
We had these on a cruise ship several years ago and they were amazing. I've been on the lookout for instructions to make them ever since. A sincere thanks to you!
I am very, very impressed by your methodology. You put so much care into getting them tender and sweet without the bitterness. I have already saved this video to my favorites list. Thank you, Chef!
Hi Suma, great recipe and you have gone through the steps very clearly. I tried your recipe, along with other ones I found, yours is simple and I enjoyed it. In another recipe, they used orange juice as the liquid for making the syrup. I didn't find any noticeable difference. I've used your recipe/method for all my citrus peel; orange, mandarin, blood orange, lemon and grapefruit with the same success. Please keep up the recipes.... 🙂
You have such a nice and articulate manner of explaining your recipes. Voice modulation and accent also is perfect, you have a sure talent for voice over work in movies and advertisement films. God bless 😇
I made these once, years ago, it was quite the process, Martha Stewart recipe. I thought to use some as gifts, but my boyfriend would not part with any... They're wonderful snacks. I'm going to dehydrate some. Can't wait to cook with it! Thank you!
Ciandied citrus peel provides the citrus water for homemade cleaner, candied portions for eating. Covered in Chocolate a great wau to have Children get their vitamin C. Going to try this with Orange and Lemon. Thanks or sharing!
yummmm....I have some nice oranges sitting on the counter and a bag of left over bitter sweet chocolate chip in the fridge. Great idea for a present. Thank you for the inspiration!!!
Wow I Love oranges and usually think to myself "Man..I wish I could do something with the peel.. feels like a waste" and now This!! 😃 I'm So excited to Try this recipe for a sweet simple snack 😍😊
Ooooh!! This looks so easy to do. I suppose the method is the same with any citrus fruits (lemons, limes, clementines, grapefruit, etc.)? Will be making this for next year's baking marathon. Thank you so much for sharing!
What a lovely video. Really sweet how you mentioned that after a meal we could have 1, feels carrying and motherly of you :) I’ve subscribed as I have a feeling that you have lots of great recepies and advice on your channel. Keep up the lovely work 😊🙏🏻🌸
Thank you for this video. When I was young, my mother used to make candied pomelo peel and the skin of sandor fruit or we call locally as santol. I loved them as they tend to be chewy...Sadly, I never learned how to make them. Subscribed.
wow! this is an amazing recipe! thank you so much for sharing, i was looking for something to do with my extra citrus peels left over and this was perfect!
Yes on having that hint of bitterness. The candy shop near my house that made the best candied orange peel I have ever had closed. Now I have to start making my own.
I think I will try these today. I saved a recipe from pinterest that used the whole orange and yours look soooo yummy! I plan to try it and let you know how they turned out...thank you!
there is a simpler and tastier method that I use to make candied orange peel. clean and wash the orange peel and remove the white pectin content in the peels to reduce bitter after taste, wipe the peels dry. put them all in an airtight mason jar or pickling jar. add 1 stick of cinnamon and 1 star anise and 1/8th spoon worth of citric acid crystals. then add powdered sugar enough to coat well the peels completely and close. keep in a cool dry place for a week and it will form really sweet and flavorful candied orange peel. i use this to flavor teas, dice and use in cakes and breads
Very well explained.. n loved the way u utilised orange peel... awsm.. I will shurly cook them... and tell u my experience.. u inspired all...bless u..👌😇
These are delicious! thank you so much. They also freeze well. I have used them in scones, italian cookies and also canolli. I appreciate you sharing this so much. I am from the high desert of California and very grateful!!!Happy Wednesday!
You can peel using one of the modern vegetable peelers, the T-shaped ones. That would leave most of the white on the orange, which is perfect e.g. for smoothies, as the white has a lot of nutrients. And you have the peel only for using zest or to candy.
Never thought orange peels could be used like this, thanks I have one request, can u please post a video on how to take out the zest from orange, and how to use fresh pineapple (not the tinned one) in a cake
Hallo, today I tried this recipe: what a delicious result! Tumbs up and thank you for sharing: my boyfriend liked them very much after dinner, and I got his compliments 😎 Just few questions: should I cover my orange peels to store in the refrigerator (I rolled them into granulated sugar)? And how long can I keep them in the fridge? Many thanks.
This was so nice..... I'm making my green tomato mincemeat right now for Christmas and the recipe calls for candied peel so will use this for lemon and orange. Thanks.
very good teacher , excellent video ! - some recipes are international I guess because this is an Italian recipe to me - still very nice to watch ! only I'd use more sugar and water to avoid caramelization ( unless you want it ) and tend to like a very sweet taste - I enjoyed watching this and remembering !
Thank you so much! Even with this proportion of sugar, it works fine. You can add a bit of corn syrup to prevent crystallization, though I have never felt the need to.
I know you said fresh organic oranges are best, but honestly I'm just trying to figure out ways to get rid of oranges that are old enough to have a texture I don't like. I think I'll make a little candied orange peel because another recipe wants orange juice so this will be a good way to figure out how to make candied orange peel without ruining any good orange peels.
My Mother- in- law used to make these. They are very good, especially dipped in the dark chocolate. Just got some nice oranges and am going to ask my husband to do the cutting. Surgery on my ulnar nerve makes in nearly impossible to use a knife.
Wonderful video! I can’t wait to try this-I hate throwing out orange peels, and this looks so good. I wonder about adding a little flavoring, maybe vanilla?
I made some-YUM. Thank You, I always wondered how these were made. I used 2 Oranges 😋. I'm gonna make these all the time now 😋😍 I added some Orange pieces too. So that's how you make the Lemon ones also. Thanks-I love the Chocolate Orange candy also-Yum.😋🤗
It looks lovely. And you've explained it so well. I certainly want to try this. We get coorg oranges here n it's peel is of greenish orange in colour. Can I use that?

There will be a bit of syrup which would be great in a lot of things, mocktails, dessert, iced tea etc.
I use the leftover orange syrup in my black tea a lot. Goes well on overnight oats too
Didn't know this, I always felt bad to throw away the peels. You explained so calmly. Subscribed.

You can scrape the inner white part of the peels to remove some of the bitterness. Then boil them once for 5 minutes before sugar syrup coating them.🤗

This is lovely 🥰 I tried other recipes but they were so complicated. Thank you 🙏
Ooh. Make candied orange peels then use the liquid to do candied ginger....or do all together. Orange infused ginger and spicy candied orange peel.
^^^total boss.....love it
Thank u. I was also wondering what to do with the remaining sugar syrup .
I have a family friend that makes this for me. It's my favorite. I chop up the ginger to put in my oatmeal, cakes, everything !! So yum
That sounds like a great idea! I wonder if I need to boil the ginger pieces first to soften them or if I put them raw into the boiling syrup.

What step did you add vanilla?
can you use brown sugar instead of white sugar? also i don't usually watch cooking videos but you're super sweet and helpful
This is the best recipe that I've seen! I just made some and they taste so good!

It looks lovely. And you've explained it so well. I certainly want to try this. We get coorg oranges here n it's peel is of greenish orange in colour. Can I use that?
No. Please use the kind shown in the video

Also was them thoroughly. Important to remove any residue of chemicals used during shipping.
