You’re still alive!! Years ago I had a reputable BMW race shop install an aftermarket oil pump kit. A week later the aftermarket shaft sheared off and the engine seized. Glad you caught yours before the engine was damaged
Ayyyy, he is back! I want you to know that I started watching you in highschool, your videos got me really excited to own an E36 M3 and are one of my inspirations for content creation. This issue really can happen at any time. My S52 at 230k was still ok when we pulled the oil pan off. But mine was an auto until 205k. Cheers man, I'm glad you got lucky.
Thank you for spreading the truth about this. The best way to prevent this is a simple drilled nut, red loctite, and safety wire, as well as the Z3 pickup tube. I’ve made videos on my channel about doing this job and have always had people tout it as a myth- it’s absolutely not. It’s the first thing I do on any E36. So glad you made it out okay! I’ve done mine always before they’ve come off. Glad to see you’re back making videos from one E36 nut to another!! 🖤
E36s are so good... they fail once you are already home so that you do not get stranded haha One time, my fuel pump internal hose(the one that connects the pump itself to the carrier that comes out of the tank) came off after a 100km drive through the night, went to start it the next day and nothing, but I was home and just had to fix it but never left me actually stranded.
good to see ya again Gavin!! Lookin' good bud!! We always do the VAC Motorsports oil pump upgrade because, yes they do like to twist off the oil pump drive gear/shaft if your driving the hell out of it.
Good to see it was a save, but it’s not the motor mounts that cause this, it’s high revs and abrupt changes in rpm that causes the oil pump nut to come off due to non ideal crankshaft harmonics. The motor mounts just isolate the engine from the chassis, has no effect on vibrations within the engine itself.
Hey lucky you were able to sort it out before any major damage! Your vids inspired me to buy my own E36 M3 (97 cosmos black coupe) last year so glad to see you still have the car and it''s still putting a smile on your face.
Ah the ole oil pump nut backing out. After swapping the motor out of one e36, I took the chance to change it out for a safety wired nut. Also had a shop install the seems legit garage chain tensioner kit so the chain isn’t free to slap around and cause the nut to back off like stock. Purrs like a kitten. Now to fix the rest of the car 🫠
That's my guy right there! I watched your videos when I was still dreaming about getting an e36! Just recently bought an e46 wagon and drove it 3+ hours home (first time driving manual irl) it went great! Can't wait to get back to work so I can afford to start modifying it more!
hell yeah I missed you, even though I watched your videos for the first time around a year ago when I bought my 328i. I was waiting and hoping for you to come back to this platform with new content, keep it up!
Yesss... finally a post from you again... long time subscriber here. And super happy to see that you still have that lovely M3. It looks mint. ❤ One of the cleanest E36 M3 out there and love how you drive it hard too.
Hi I have a 330ci with the M54b30 engine and have upgraded my oil pump for one with a 4 bolt configuration as the car sees quite a lot of track time. The reason the reverse threaded nut comes undone is the harmonic resonance created when the engine is held at sustained high revs so definitely worth doing if you're going to drive your Beemer the way it should be driven!
The first thing that brakes/seizes are the camshafts, because they're the furthest from the oil pump, also the reason the pump nut backs off is because the oil pump chain gets loose and slaps around, also because you've got a 3.0 and they have bad harmonics
I am in the middle of collecting maintenance parts for my 95 m3, this nut with the safety wire has been sitting in my room over a month now waiting to be installed along with 40 plus other parts.
And yes we missed you haha theres a check valve in the oil filter housing. Mine was broken on time, so the oil went out of the filter, the oil pressure sensor went on right away. So in that case, the light lights up fast. The serration that fall of and didnt damage anything, is more lucky. Like you did, dont take risk and push the car with your gf is the (only) way to go. Before that driving high speeds, it was probably ok, or else your engine stoped because of no oil. Your E36 has a angle on it's hood, refirbish the engine would cost a lot of work and money! Better buy new accesoires (like you did) from that :)
Glad to see you posting again. And you definitely dodged a bullet. The upgrade shaft and sprocket combination is a good fix for most people. Unfortunately it's more of a Band-Aid for the main cause. The main cause of these oil pump related failures is the oil pump chain slapping around at certain RPMs. Even though inline 6-cylinder engines have very good primary and secondary balancing, the harmonics generated with combustion events is not fully eliminated from the damper. And at high RPMs cause the oil pump chain to slap back and forth violently. BMW Engineers knew this, and is the reason that the Euro s50 and the s54 engines come with an oil pump chain tensioner. And can be retrofitted to other engines.
This bolt thing is caused by torsional vibration, most likely the harmonic balancer which contains rubber lost its damping function as it is too old. And also the e36 has a pretty harsh rev limiter that creates shock loads. Also lighter flywheels amplify crank vibrations, where the harmonic balancer is not designed for
Great video! I honestly don't like Blackstone. They are super slow, their viscosity measurements are frequently off compared to other labs, and they infer fuel dilution from flashpoint not direct measurement. I am using OAI (Horizon) these days and I think the quality and turnaround time are better. The website is horrible though.
Nobody makes them in the US from what I can find. I had to import them from Germany using a freight forwarder. I was mostly able to just use the OE holes already there. Maybe I should make em 🤷
wow glad to have you back i literally was abou to unsubscribe few weeks back from you thinking you was done then out of shock you appeared with a new video how strange was that
@TreatsOnTheStreets ya! It popped up the classifieds so I jumped on it. Direct bolt in. And ' while I was in there ' I figured I'd tackle the nut . Mine was still tight, but it was easy to do at the time.
I'm with you on that. They are either too small or too big and this one was just right. It was a seller on eBay but last that I checked they don't sell it anymore. I actually have a video on the install that I made years ago
I got rid of it because my car ran badly on it. Kept throwing check engine lights. I swapped the tune for 22rpd and had a much better experience, especially with customer service.
My boy finally remembered his TH-cam password
😂😂😂

Z3 pickup tube? Never heard of that! The usual fix I hear of is the addition of an oil pump chain tensioner
Glad to see you making me content again.
Sad to hear about the engine.
I warped my head at 280K 😢

My steering shaft coupler exploded as soon as I got home from work and parked😢
Clickbait lol your engine didn’t fail but your oil pump did. Glad you’re back tho

You did it the 100% way. I just did the minimum to pass 😂
Glad you still have this car
Last video I was a fan, 2 years later I own a silver m3 like yours
Dude, you don't know how happy I am to see you back here and that everything's going well. Looking forward to more videos!
That's my guy right there! I watched your videos when I was still dreaming about getting an e36! Just recently bought an e46 wagon and drove it 3+ hours home (first time driving manual irl) it went great! Can't wait to get back to work so I can afford to start modifying it more!
The man is back! Lets goooo!!!
No worries brother; you'll build it better 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Hope all is well and keep up the videos!!
Great to see the content again! Glad you're still enjoying your M3!
Glad you were able to fix it without any catasrophic damage.

You’re finally back!!!🎉🎉🎉
Yes! The man is back in town!
Happy to see you're back Gavin. Missed you and your E36. Don't turbo it, please!
333,000ks on my 328i i been thrashing it very hard for 10 years no drama at all

Been waiting for an upload forever!! Welcome back. Sorry to hear about the engine🫶🏼

I had no idea about this issue and I’ve had my M3 for over 20 years
Dude! where the HELL have you been?
That 6spd 420g is looking like a smooth shift 😊🎉
BMW and Audi always supplying YT creator content.
I am in the middle of collecting maintenance parts for my 95 m3, this nut with the safety wire has been sitting in my room over a month now waiting to be installed along with 40 plus other parts.
I love your approach. Best to take care of it all then enjoy the heck out of it being bulletproof.
Thank you for sharing this! I just got a 99 e36 M3 coupe (coming to the channel soon) and absolutely love it! Subscribed!!!
Haven't seen from you in a while. Welcome back I go check your vlog!

I've yet to see this issue on a non M m52/m50 I'm almost convinced it has something to do with the crank harmonics of the s52 itself
Think so most likely especially since it makes more power and people rev them hard. Don’t know too much but just my guess
Holy shit hes back. Only been waiting a few years
Glad you were able to recoup. enjoy the canyons brother!
S52 Harmonics back at it again
Glad to see you posting again. And you definitely dodged a bullet.

That's a great point. I saw kits to install a tensioner but I didn't want to get that deep into it 😅
Welcome back
Nice it's back on the road. What boot spoiler is that? Looks great.
This bolt thing is caused by torsional vibration, most likely the harmonic balancer which contains rubber lost its damping function as it is too old. And also the e36 has a pretty harsh rev limiter that creates shock loads. Also lighter flywheels amplify crank vibrations, where the harmonic balancer is not designed for
I do have an aluminum flywheel....😅
If you shut it off right after you lose oil pressure the engine usually comes out ok, but that pump nut is a hell of an Achilles heel
Great video! I honestly don't like Blackstone. I am using OAI (Horizon) these days and I think the quality and turnaround time are better. The website is horrible though.
Good to see you again,,,
Good deal glad it worked out
I fix equinox head gaskets. Flipped 12 so far. Milkshake oil in some. Wonder how bearings are?
ayy I haven't seen you in my feed for a bit how you been other than your engine problems
Nice car. Did you have to drill holes for the side skirt extensions or just tape? What brand are they?
Nobody makes them in the US from what I can find. I had to import them from Germany using a freight forwarder. I was mostly able to just use the OE holes already there. Maybe I should make em 🤷
@ thanks for the reply
wow glad to have you back i literally was abou to unsubscribe few weeks back from you thinking you was done then out of shock you appeared with a new video how strange was that
Who did the work for the oil pump and the upgrades to the oil pump issue?
When i swapped to the euro spec dual oil sump pump yrs ago..i safety wired mine
That's a great swap
@TreatsOnTheStreets ya! It popped up the classifieds so I jumped on it. Direct bolt in. And ' while I was in there ' I figured I'd tackle the nut . Mine was still tight, but it was easy to do at the time.
2 years....
A more accurate title would have been 'I Narrowly Avoided A Catastrophic Engine Failure In My 80k Mile E36 M3'
Santa came early
Was wondering where you were... BTW, what's your wheel set up?
Do you know what duck tail you have? Its the only bodykit add-on i want to add, but most i have found look obnoxiously large.
I'm with you on that. They are either too small or too big and this one was just right. It was a seller on eBay but last that I checked they don't sell it anymore. I actually have a video on the install that I made years ago
Dawg it’s been so long😂😂
So did you wirenut it or stake it, or weld it?
Wire nut.
@ “ While you were there” did you add some baffles or perhaps upgraded pick up tube?
@@Genesislights keep watching, you'll get those details :)
Do you have a video doing acs delete
No I don't. I deleted it and then used a resistor to trick the ABS to still work though
How’s the RK tune? 🫢 noticeable difference?
I got rid of it because my car ran badly on it. Kept throwing check engine lights. I swapped the tune for 22rpd and had a much better experience, especially with customer service.
@ perfect thanks, I appreciate your response. I’m glad you’re back!
Leave the engine atachements stock for an easy life 😅
so this is where you been 😭😭😭
Jesus where have u been?
i forgot u existed
Haha
