    I have been using drills for as long as I can remember. The first one I had was corded and only had one speed. And every decade or so they add something to the drill. My point being is that when I saw the title for this video I was like, how hard can it be for someone to use a drill ?
    But as I watched this video, it made me realize how far drills have come, and I was able to learn every new feature one at a time over time as opposed to ALL AT ONCE . So I can see where it might be a little intimidating using one for the first time.

  • @bean2594
    @bean2594 9 ปีที่แล้ว +101

    One common beginner's mistake is tightening down on the bit when it is off-center and between two teeth. This is a very easy mistake to make with smaller bits. The bit will wobble, and you may mistakenly think that the bit is bent.
    You need to make sure that the bit is in the very center and touching all three teeth in the chuck.

    • @sawdustandsurvival
      @sawdustandsurvival 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Mary Brent, when you tighten until it feels tight but you know it's off center, just loosen the chuck slightly, just until the bit will slip up and down again, then re tighten. It should be right in the middle of all 3 teeth now and be nice and straight.

    I've read thru a few of the comments and many appear to be "I was afraid to ask how to"....Never be fearful or ashamed to ask for help/assistance/instructions.....no one is born with knowledge, we all had to ask or have someone show us how to do just about everything we do in life. This may have been more of a "rambling" then making a comment on the video but "Never be ashamed to ASK a Question!" 😊
    Great video/instructions as always April!

    This a great beginners video. Only thing I missed was the locking mechanism I have on all my drills. I have to hold down a button to lock the chuck, otherwise it just spins when I try to loosen or tighten it.
    There is a trick to using it on two of my drills (both are bosch, not sure if that is a coincidence): you hold down the lock button lightly while turning your chuck. After about a quarter turn the button depresses further. This is the state you need to keep the button in to lock the chuck.

      I understand, but try not to look at it that way. Some men will try and belittle you for asking what they consider a simple question, but only a handful. The rest are very willing to pass along any information that they know.
      I've run across a few men who want to make a joke out of me asking them a simple question and it makes me angrier than anything, however when this happens I know 100% that they are in the wrong. It takes a lot more courage for somebody to admit they don't know something than it does for somebody to make fun of them. So don't let the idiots get you down. ; )

      April Wilkerson "Some men will try and belittle you for asking" But those aren't "real" men...it's a good way to weed out the real ones from the posers and Momma's boys. You rock! (what's the clutch for?)

      Thanks. I'm hoping that somebody who has never used a drill before could pick one up and at least get going. It's frustrating being a newbie and not being able to find a resource that starts from the absolute beginning.

      @Back2Wood 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You´re so right! As a beginning woodworker you will not find very much on youtube. For every other topic you can find infos for newbies. But woodworking... Didn´t realise this, until you said it... remarkable...

      Yep, the reason I know is because I was one looking for them! : ) So I'm going to do a how to tool series starting from the very beginning then work up.

    Ok so I've been a subscriber of yours for a while now, and I've watched alot of your videos binge watching since I found you but I missed this one! Wish I'd seen it about 10 mins ago while I tried to use the drill to hang curtains! Got the holes crooked but I knew how to use it for the most part. Felt bad. But watching you made me exc in red to use all the tools till I realized I suck at power tools! I'll just keep watching you instead!

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't give up! I make mistakes all the time but still carry on. Just practice on a scrap board and you'll get the feel for holding the drill straight vs at an angle which results in a little crooked. The more practice, the more confidence you'll feel. I started with small projects and as my confidence and experience grew, then the projects grew. Enjoy being able to do things that make you happy. Cheers!

    For people who might be buying a drill, I have found out that tightening a bit in the chuck in this way is easier if the part of the chuck that you grab on to is metal that is knurled. A knurled surface is one that has a pattern of ridges cut into it for easy grasping. The chucks with a plastic grabbing surface tend to slip out of my hands; I found it out the hard way.
