Even though, the land cruiser is one hell of a tank for overland I overland with a Chevy Trail-Boss with a 4 inch coil-over lift from BDS extra leaf springs for added payload so for in 1 year we have 21,985 miles no issues with the 10 speed GM/Ford transmission the 3.0L I6 would be nice for the trail boss, but the 5.3L V8 L84 is one reliable engine. Before the Trail-Boss we had 2015 Silverado with the 5.3L V8 L83 with the 8 speed transmission with 123,972 miles with no issues with the 8 speed we did a transmission overhaul at 65,000 miles just to keep the vehicle in good shape.

Worked for a company called "Overland Explorer" and they do custom sprinter vans and other high end offroad campers and such, great company... They were my dream retirement plan until I drove a sprinter. Not a good layout in the sprinter vehicle at all, cheap feeling, very overpriced for a van.

If either vehicle breaks down ( US and the rest of the world), which one will have better parts availability and mechanic who can fix it (assuming I can perform some maintenance)? Too many customization = limited parts availability and delivery. For RVing in developed countries, I'd pick the Sprinter. For remote and ROW (Rest of the World) travel, I'd pick the cruiser.

Irony is you likely be spending the same price new whether you use LC 100/200/300 series or lexus equivalent , merc you are likely spending 50-130 k on base vehicle modification to tourer/camper /4x4/offroad conversion 200-250k on top of price of vehicle..
pending on mods to the cruiser you might add another 100-200k on top of purchase price
noting you will be looking a the lwb versions or commercial versions of the sprinter vans..
at this stage with fuel expansion of the cruiser 200-300 liter main split tank, wheel arch reserves 150-200 liters combined (this may vary depending on chassis type you have allowing scope of 70 series troopy as an option)
150-250 liters in jerry cans roughly about 3/4's of the main fuel capacity..
noting whether you use a fuel bladder or jerry cans as a top medium whether it be the sprinter or the cruiser you will be building a exo skeleton style roof rack that ties in to the under carriage because anything you can attach to rain channels will not be rated for carrying weight in an offroad setting..

So the vans are awesome, no two ways about that, but they are VERY tall, so if you plan on truly overlanding in heavily forested or jungley (is that a word?) areas, you may have clearance issues. I've been a lot of places where my Tacoma w/ rooftop tent barely makes it under some of the canopy. The vans are more "glamping" than really true overlanding, so if you are more interested in the comfort than getting way out in the middle of nowhere, the van is the way to go.

Another proof that overlanding is 90% about dreaming it and 10% about actually doing it. Travelling in an $100K plus vehicle in under developed countries is like stepping in the tiger's cage wearing a meat costume! It's an invitation to be robbed, to get invaded, to be required higher bribes by the corrupt officials, etc. At the very least, poor fuel and road conditions will put a high toll on your "land yacht". Even the Land Cruiser with foreign (to them) plates and accessories hanging outside of it is a bad idea. Unless of course you stick to Utah and Colorado and constantly looking for 5G coverage so you can work from "home" then this lifestyle is not sustainable. Another win for marketing vs. reality and common sense.

I went boon docking last summer in a Class B RV. While it has its amenities (onboard bed, kitchen, toilet/shower, etc.), it’s not as agile/off-road capable as say a 4x4 truck like a 4Runner or Land Cruiser. And yes, I’ve shopped around for pricing on these Class B, they can go upwards of 150 to 200K. For the type of travel I am planning in North and South America, the 4Runner TRD Pro for me is the way to go. Plus, finding fuel for MB diesel engine outside of the developed world could be a problem. Oh yeah, most of these Class B don’t even come with a spare tire. Go figure. ✌️🇨🇦

I want to know if anyone it's putting f-series t-cases on the transt vans to make them as 4x4 as the Mercedes

The MB will rust out in 5 years of outdoor use. Paint is so thin on these!

Nope , the new Sprinter is tinned at all problem zones , not like the old one...😎

The LC100 is better because Land Cruisers are all over the world. The Sprinter won’t work well because it need DEF and Ultra Low Sulphuric Diesel fuel and a lot of countries around the world don’t have it.

About 20,000 in parts on that Merc. Your paying the extra 100,000 just to line the pockets of the overlanding company so they can buy their next Ferrari!

Tall does not necessarily mean top heavy.

Hmmm, a vehicle designed and engineered for offroad travel, with proven history of reliability, capability and serviceability, against a van built for autobahns. Its a no-brainer, really.
I have seen the LC traveling the Canning Stock Route, crossing the Simpson Desert and touring the Victorian High Country, but the Sprinter? Yeah, nah!

Too many problems arise when you purchase the van you'll find that when you buy it its at the dealer getting repairs with electrical problems . I'd go with the Toyota less problems more reliable

I’d take a Sportsmobile over these massive vans any day of the week.

But you are comparing completely different cars. It should be a Van vs a Van or a SUV vs SUV.

You obviously haven't seen any Australian spec Land Cruiser custom overlanders if you think that crap can of a van is better.
