thank you thank you thank you. Keeping my family's fleet of junkers running I am constantly searching UTube for repair videos. This is by far the best repair video I have seen.
You have really made me an Automobile Engineer, the video is very instructive and educating, your analysis is second to none, if you will agree an ready to learn more from you. In all you are wonderful. Thank you Peter
Hello Peter. I have an interesting symptom, I have a 2003 corolla sport. My belt squeaks only at 1000 RPM's. If this was a tensioner issue, would it squeak all the time? If the belt is bad would it squeak all the time? Or is there another part causing the problem? Your videos are very educational and extremely informative. Thank you and please post more videos!
Hi, Thank you very much. Very nice way how you explain. I have a Yaris, but 1.4 d4d 2010. It seems that's the same installation, I tried to changde the alternator but can't access to all these piece. What is your suggestion please to access ? Should I go by down, or by side (Remove the bumper on the front wheel?) Do you have some advice ? Because impossible to do like you (no space to access to the tensioner). Thanks you very much :)
hi I have a question I heard you mention that it's better to buy an original serpentine belt from toyota because it's very good quality but I already bought one from a Napa auto store and the belt is made by gates that it's suppose to be a good quality also . but now I'm confuse did I do the wrong thing by buying the serpentine belt from Napa and not from the toyota parts department please get me out of my doubt and reply thank you. ..
Hi Peter. Great video...very detail like orther one you make. Thanks to you I fixed my rusty fuel filling pipe:-) got question. my Yaris2008 1.33 2SZFE just did do so far 38000 miles this belt should last at least 50k miles does not make any sound at the start but it is 9year...do I need to replace it?? thanks again for your videos
Change the belt and low rev squeaking went away. But I noticed about 1mm (3/64in) left right play on the power steering pulley and even less on the AC compressor. Is this acceptable?
I'm wanting to change my serpentine belt and also my chain tensioner, I tried to remove the belt but every video apart from this one shows you just need to put the wrench on the top "nut" that's welded in the tensioner and not the loosen the bolt under it, I tried all day and with both hands full force to move the tensioner forwards....without success other than killing my hands and arms, I will try again tomorrow by loosning the nut underneath and trying again, HOPEFULLY it works...thanks
Hi Peter Nice video. Thank you. one thing I need to ask you. Should you tighten the engine block bolt, and if so does it matter if the tensioner mechanism does not move at all when accelerating? thanks
+james p I did replace the belt and only used the fake nut. I had no tension problems when removing or installing the new belt. It's been about 2 months and no issues and no more squealing!
I made the mistake of not loosening the tensioner. It did not spring back when I put everything back together until I loosened it and heard/saw it spring back and then re-tightened it. Peter, as always, is worth listening to.
I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla with 45,900 miles. This is the recommendation from the Toyota dealer: “Drive belt, very dry, full of cracks, replacement cost is $245 USD”. It costs too much. I am thinking about changing it by myself.
Nice video. However, you don't have to touch the tensioner mid/attaching bolt at all. Just put 19mm socket etc. tool to the fixed/welded nut in the tensioner, pry tensioner open as much as needed for the belt to loosen, put new belt back in and you're done. :-)
in order to remove the belt tenisoner, you must remove the bolt to the motor mount and jack the motor using a jack and a wood block. place the bolt on the jack and jack up the motor using a solid place on the oil pant to clear the 17mm bolt from the engine block. not so easy to do.
Actually it's totally fine if you have little cracks that run perpendicular to the ribbing, only replace if you have cracks running in the same direction
Now i know how to remove and fix serpentine belt because of you Peter Finn. Thanks a lot for your slow motion teaching.
😀👍
A very thorough demonstration. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

+Nilda B. Hello. The best place is always to choose the Toyota dealership part. Cheaper brands parts quality is almost always weaker. :-(

Change the belt and low rev squeaking went away. But I noticed about 1mm (3/64in) left right play on the power steering pulley and even less on the AC compressor. Is this acceptable?

Thank you very much Pet, this is excelent video....
+Gustavo Ceratti Thanks for comment.
I saw an DIY that doesn't mention loosening the tensioner and all you do is move the fake nut. I'm wondering if loosening it is necessary?
+machsix123 I loosen it always. We have diy technicians and Toyota specialists.
+james p I did replace the belt and only used the fake nut. I had no tension problems when removing or installing the new belt. It's been about 2 months and no issues and no more squealing!

Replace at 50K-60K miles? I have a 2000 Celica since new and now with 167K miles and will be replacing the belt for the first time!
