I still prefer the old £1 note. It’s seemed to have greater buying value than the coins. I never used to break into a £1 note from my purse if I had a 10/- to use up first. You felt quite poor when the green notes had to be used…aye, those were the days Christopher…..🙂
As an auto electrician I am always removing trim, seats, carpets etc. and find quite a lot of old pound coins, I just chuck them in a celebrations tin.I must have about 150 or so,most of them green😊. I have used them for egr blanking on various vehicles and even machined a couple on my lathe to make a pair of stepped spacers, they were the perfect width.
I am not a big coin hunter, I kept one of the old £1 coins, and some of the 50ps coin as I noticed some nice designs on the coins, like Olympics 2012, Isaac Newton etc. I am more of a collected of keeping coins when I go on holidays and usually the smallest note possible,
I have a very clear memory roughly 1983 when I was 6 years old standing In a queue at a shop and seeing a tv news story about the introduction of these coming into circulation.
Oh the nostalgia!!! I am in agreement with you Christopher, why not do commemoratives in the new pounds like they used to? Give us collectors something else to look out for being my principal motivation but would provide another vehicle with which to highlight more aspects of this country and it’s peoples.....opportunity missed! 🤷♂️
My grandad had loads of the Welsh Dragon pounds. Used to give us £1.20 for them, this will have been the 1995 ones as we'd stopped by the time the 2000s came in.

Such a nostalgic hunt. I collected one of every design for my collection. Some designs were minted more than once but just one of each was enough for me. I have a number from The Isle of Man, my favourite being the one with the chapel on it. I also have a number of designs from Gibraltar, my favourite being St George and the dragon. I have one from the Channel Isles and the Falkland Isles too. My favourite is an extremely rare milled but unstuck round pound which has an edge inscription but is blank on both sides. I have the last round pound too 😁

You can swop them on the change checker app (no money to change hands). Look up old round pound on eBay where you can sell them, just make sure you add the cost of postage and the percentage that eBay sticks on for the use of the site

For every coin handed back to the banks ,the coins are melted down and put back into the mint to be reissued in the edges of the new pound coins and 2 pound coins ,so making them a little rarer .
the strike quality (or wearing) of many of these is appaling, are you sure some are not counterfeits ? , and why did the bank not send these back to (the mint ? for destruction ? or is the cost of handling too great for them ?)

What a fantastic chance to see these old coins! I have a few in my collection, I have most coins - awesome as always Christopher! Keep up the great work
You ought to learn to spot forgeries, if you don't know what you're looking for, forged pound coins are badly worn and sometimes black residue will be left behind on your hands if you rub the coin.
I've got everything crossed for new commemorative £1's. A new set of UK Capitals would be amazing on them....who am I kidding? It's hard enough wishing for 50ps. Very interesting this though, they feel like 50 years ago, not 5 😂👍
The withdrawal of the old pound coins was a bit of a bodge job, if I remember correctly. Hundreds of millions of old pound coins have avoided the Royal Mint crucible, so its not surprising that you managed to get a hundred of them: good relations with the bank pay off. Round pounds were badly out of date and did desperately need replacing, due to the fakes, but I still miss them all the same. One of my favourites is the 2006 Egyptian Bridge design and the 3 lions design.
I had a lot the mother in law collected, no idea what to do so I banked a number of them. I think a few were fakes. I told my laundrette not to change their coin acceptors as they could just sell the round pounds as tokens - 10 for £10 , which they would get back immediately any way.

I can’t believe anyone would pay more than £1 for any of them. The bridges used to turn up in change quite often. The daffodils were probably the most common flower I used to see (maybe it was just the one that stuck in my head more) and as for the cities I don’t think I ever saw the Cardiff but maybe it depends on where you live a bit as well.
