  • We travel to the Keokuk, Iowa area for the three-day Geode Fest 2018 (September 28, 29, 30). Geode hunters, rockhounds, and mineral/crystal/fossil vendors came together in Hamilton, Illinois for three days of digging, cracking, contests, and rockhound fellowhip and fun.
Geode hunters were given special access to private and public dig sites all across the tri-state area. On Friday and Saturday, there were both morning and afternoon digs, and one morning dig on Sunday.
In addition, professional geode crackers were on site to help reveal the hidden treasures, and several contests were held, including Ugliest Geode and Best Geode in both youth and adult divisions.
In this video, we also meet up with Bryan Major, better known as "The Crystal Collector" and he shares insights about collecting geodes.

We drove about 845 miles from Mechanicsburg, PA to attend in 2018. I'm already making plans to head back in 2020. :) It is a ton of fun.

We could not make it for 2019 (due to rain and flooding) but we are excited about 2020 as well.

Chase and I would love to head back up your way, but the shift in the weather may hold us off until the Spring. We really enjoyed meeting you.

When you get a nice geode like some of those that you've shown with calcite inside, do you bath it in acid to get rid of the calcite?

Thanks for a wonderful video. I was there this year but my trip was cut short by an injury.
Do you know which site the iridescent geode came from?

    • @rockhoundingusa8207

It was from a location (near Keokuk) not accessible to the public anymore. It was purchased from a vendor at the event.

Nope! The site was not purchased by a vendor. Yep , it is highly off limits. The man that owns that ground is not , absolutely not interested in geodes and will prosecute those who are caught there. Beside that , there is not a continuous layer at this location, rather irregularly shaped lens structures that are discontinuous. Mr. Wixom did a lot of trespassing for a while there but even he knows how dangerous it has become to hunt there mainly through his untactful actions. To the best of my knowledge the place is wired for light and sound these days.
Modern living and the electronic age! I know several folks that are getting brown irredescent calcite geodes from other sites that they get really testy about divulging the locations of and I don't blame them!
