This, has made me think about reconfiguring the Ditton 25's I have just recapped.... Overboard the top 30%, and remove the pair of HF1200's and replace them with a "proper" mid driver. Hmmmm. As for your ideas, I think I'd go for the 1st option you talked about, purely because you have not done this before and I'd be interested to see how it worked!
I know these speakers, the cabinets could use a few braces and a better speaker terminal . Three way, why not. PSB is a Canadian company that used the NRC lab to design speakers with Dr. Floyd in the 1980’s. Look him up.
Ummm maybe. Not a fan. Bit of a compromise. If you end up needed to do a 2.5way maybe the driver line up was wrong to start with and a 3way would have been better?
That last minute idea really thrilled me! But otoh curiosity killed the beast...

B200 is probably a better option, I suspect that 2 8" drivers in that cabinet would give a resonant frequency that's a bit higher than ideal.

oh yes , all very fine drivers , have them all many times over ,
The only abr I got on with was in the B&W DM7 mk2, it appeared to have been pretty well implemented in that speaker.
Probably closer to a Martin Colloms Mini Monitor (1975 Hi Fi Answers? design) that used KEF B200, HF1300 and KEF T27.
T27 has been used in many designs with the HF1300. If is use the HF1300 my preferred super tweeter will always be the coles unit
