  • Most veterinarians know the importance of good nutrition for dogs and cats. and they see and learn alot while practicing medicine. Nut these days, due to social media, they are reluctant to bring it up, in fear of their clients bombarding them with pet food misinformation they've see on the internet. Sometimes it can get pretty heated!

    I am a German vet and what you say is absolutely true. All the points you raised are my daily business. You study for years, go to training courses, read books and studies, treat lots of dogs and cats with various health problems every day and then people think they know better and now have the ultimate wisdom because they've watched a few videos on TH-cam. It's frustrating. Luckily not all pet owners are on the raw food, grain free or whatever trip and follow the vet's advice. I am very grateful for your views.

    No more headaches. No more diarrhea, vomiting or sold out prescription food that costs $80 a bag.
    Took me three years to land on Iams. They need to upgrade the product design/look it looks plain and boring, but it’s been good so far for my dog

    I’d also like to point out most vets also no longer tell people when their pet is obese even though it is a health issue because too many people find it insulting then leave google reviews about how horrible their vet is for saying their dog is fat.

      lol! I was going to mention that! That’s worth a whole video. I used to train vets to not let it be a weight discussion, but make it a health discussion. Discuss the health risks with the pets unhealthy metabolism. The concern is the increased risk of some heartbreaking, expensive conditions. L! I’ve seen people literally leave clinics over saying their pets were overweight!

      Not my experience, my male cat got a little plump as he exited kittenhood. First thing his vet mentioned. Orijen Fit & Trim was what I fed as I fed mostly kibble at the time and it brought his weight down. Now though, he eats a variety of kibble (Farmina and the Orijen) and wet foods from Royal Canin to Weruva.

    So excited when I see a new video from you and Dr. Rea! my vet also like myself shows and breeds, and I feel he’s more open to talk to me regarding certain things he may not like to with others. I went to see him a couple of weeks ago as my puppies needed their 2nd vaccines, and I asked him “I’m having a very hard time deciding what to feed my dogs, I keep getting these expensive foods that are supposed to be the best of the best and I’m having random inconsistencies, from soft big stools a lot of gas to vomiting, and that I just honestly don’t know what’s something more appropriate for my small dogs (this was right before I found you and Dr. Rea). He said he typically doesn’t like to suggest a specific food because then if a dog reacts to it, or if the owner doesn’t know how to transition or really if anything happens, people run back to him and get upset with him for suggesting that brand. I totally understand his point of view! And don’t blame him. For me he did give me a few names of brands I can look into and he said to just start with one small bag, see how they do and if all is well, stick with it, and if they don’t move to the next one. He swaps pro plan and royal canin, and when vets feed their own pets RC, proplan and hills, that tells me something….. I don’t think many people understand the stress our vets go through on a daily basis.

    I have to give the nod to the Vets on this subject…my GSD has had numerous auto immune issues her entire life..one thing after another until she had colitis and perinatal fistulas then the vet said nope, she needs Royal Canine Hydrolyzed Protein. It’s expensive…I wasn’t wild about the ingredients and wanted her on something “better”. I talked to my breeder, she said go raw, checked Internet forums, they all said, go raw,…but why would the vet prescribe this food if it wasn’t good for her? The vet has years of schooling, the breeder & other yokes on the forums do not, and my girl has issues with multiple ingredients/substances. If I feed raw and she has issues with all types of protein, a protein raw and a protein cooked do her the same harm…I stuck with the expert (the Vet). She is 13 1/2 now, a true trooper. I did try & take her off the vet diet a year ago but after 6 months her colitis came back and I put her back on the vet diet and no more colitis. I believe in my decision, despite her having some minor setbacks with vestibular disease and ear infections she is still going strong. I’m looking for a food for a new pup I will have this spring, and yes, I understand nutritional fatigue! I like Dr. Rea too she is a big help as well as yourself. Leaning towards Fromm Four Star and will keep an eye out for high calcium levels in the dogs blood work thanks to your suggestions. Vets are in the profession because they love animals not because they want to harm them or just don’t care!!!!

    I remember when I was young my dad said that eating is such a hassle. He wishes they would come up with some kind of a biscuit that you could just eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner and be done with it.! 🤣. on the serious side, you would think that nutrition would be one of the key issues of veterinarian would want to address with a client when they bring in a new pet. Nutrition is a major part of caring for a living organism. It should be more than just a simple recommendation of one brand of food

    7-10 years ago I stopped into a boutique pet food store because I was curious. I was overwhelmed with all the brands and labels. Talked to the young lady working and she said Dog Chow was full of fillers and not bioavailable to my dog. They also said I’d feed less to my dogs. I admit I fell for it. I bought taste of the wild with the buffalo on the yellow bag. My German shepherd ate it but she pooped mud pies. Horrible. By Labrador took a mouthful and dropped it all over the floor. They ate it very slow. Should’ve taken it back but I’m not the return stuff kinda guy. After that went back to Dog Chow and haven’t changed. Told my vet and she said to not buy food that is grain free. This was years before the DCM stuff. I took her advice and agreed. I figured she went through college and is smarter than the young lady working in the pet store. Those pet food stores are so slick talking nice and making it seem like the food you fed isn’t healthy or digestible. I’m glad you’re on here combating the misinformation. It’s an up hill battle like taking on a Qanon follower in my opinion.

He eats hills adult large breed now and I was thinking of switching to hills light large breed or hills perfect weight and joint large breed. Honestly though it seems that he just eats a larger quantity of these two compared to the regular adult large breed food. So what’s the difference really?

      Eh, there is nothing special about it. It doesn’t bring anything good to the table, it has no unique healing properties. If you feed it you are just adding fat and calories and contributing to pancreatitis and obesity. The worst is putting it on the skin and coat, then you have a greasy dog with clogged pores and skin cells that can no longer exfoliate and trap in bacteria (which by the way thrive on the newly warm and moist environment supplied by the oil).

    Also, I hope you don’t mind me asking here, I just watched Dr Rea’s video regarding the Kirkland line of foods. I’m going to post this to her as well, but I was wondering if you both would possibly be able to include sodium % and copper %, as my own research recently shows some companies that exceed big on these as well and are very bad for your pets (the big companies DO have proper amount though, so I thought it would be another great point to show people in even more depth why research, and properly made foods are so so important for our cats and dogs. I have a 14 year old dog (big time heart dog), with CHF and so I started really looking into sodium as high sodium does put more strain on the kidneys, etc. I was SHOCKED at the amount of sodium in some foods…. Including the one I was feeding at the time, and I noticed my dogs were drinking like crazy. Anyways, on the Kirkland video, she has quite a few Kirkland foods on there and I would love to know why a food within the same line from the same company would have higher calcium/phosphorus on very close protein levels and one was even more and yet lower in calcium/phosphorus than the other one. Could they be using different sourcing of meat in different formulas? And what drives the calcium/phosphorus up high? Does it have to do with quality ? Thank you so much, sorry for ranting so much, I think you can tell how important this subject is to me lol.

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Sarah, you are on the right track. When you change meat sources you end up delivering different mineral levels. Goi g grain free will change mineral levels. And yes, the quality of the meat source determines mineral content. Bone, hair, hoof, feathers, etc will drive calcium and phosphorus up. As Dr Rea said, minerals are so important yet companies don’t bother controlling them because no one is looking… and it costs money. And sadly, the most attractive looking protein ingredients can be very excessive in minerals. I am certain the excess protein and the minerals they deliver are contributing to so much kidney disease and urinary stones, especially in cats. Hope that helps!

      Nutrition should be higher on the list for some vets I know but even the ones passionate about nutrition are getting tired of fighting. Dr Rea mentioned it in her comment but obesity is another issue vets are reluctant to bring up. And that is much more critical to address than food. But pet parents get offended and actually leave the practice! Nevermind your overweight pet has an increase d risk of almost every disease you could name! When Blue was more popular vets knew it wasn’t good food but couldn’t say so because clients wanted affirmation for being such great pet parents for feeding Blue! Really! It’s not easy being a vet these days!

      I guess maybe this is a great approach for general vets. When you visit internal medicine veterinary specialists or neurosurgeons, they kind of want to discuss foods you're feeding and whats on offer that might provide some relief. I've seen both and also got my cat a Maxilo Facial surgeon for her teeth and all have had long discussions. Keeping updated on Google actually found me a breakthrough medication prior to the company Elanco sending the info to the specialist. He was ecstatic since he knows how many animals visiting his practice this could save. So do your research.

The fact Tufts University and Cornell and many other nutritionists agree with Hills, that makes it a conspiracy. LOL! You think Hills could have made it look worse by discontinuing their grain free foods, but they didn't. you think they would have had us reps go out and tell vets not to recommend grain free, but they told us there's more questions than answers. And when the FDA overreacted and listed brands, all of us knew that was knee jerk but none of us respect the FDA anyway. But the Hills haters, the fear mongers, and of course the et food marketers will use it.
