Boy do I have a story to tell. I live in India,Im a foreigner....I adopted my dog as a pup 9 yrs ago. Last year i suspect she suffered a Babesia Gibsoni bout. As I was trying to fly her to South Africa, I needed to do blood tests to comply with the South African quarantine requirements. India is not equipped to run these tests, so I had to send blood to Dubai. They conduct tests for Babesia Gibsoni. Her IFA test came back positive as a carrier of Babesia Gibsoni but the other perifiral test to see if she was currently sick with Babesia Gibsoni was negative. So as there is no current 100% cure for eradicating the parasite from her blood, we could not relocate her to South Africa, and because I love her so much, I decided to keep extending visas till she dies. I dont have it in me to abandon or rehome her. Anyhow, just after that report, her hind legs became lame somewhat. So began my constant visits to 6 different vets, one vet was 300km there and back. One vet said she had hip dysplacia, another said Arthritis as so did others. Then we had her on NSA Inflammatories. Then heaps of other meds also tried joint supplements, salmon oil, golden paste..etc etc. It just got worse, the meds and drugs created other issues and eventually my baby was reduced to a zombie. Thats when I flushed all the meds down the toilet. I then went to a state vet, they did xrays andsaid no hipdysplacia, no arthritis, she has an injured knee joint and by now was 3 kg over weight ( she was a healthy 15kg dog before the meds that I had to conceal inside cheese)(both meds and cheese were damaging to her) We began ultrasound and I followed all your massage tips, I used arnica cream on her legs daily. Worked really well. I also purchased an ultra sound machine and did that from home. Put her on curcumin supplements and salmon oil capsules. I then contracted a dog nutritionist, we did a whole sleep report, analyzed her daily routine and current eating habits. Took her off all the kibble, chew sticks and raw hide bone thingies....they use formaldehyde and commercial glue in those treats. I was always suspecting kibble was BS. We now have her on 2% of her body weight in food, 60% meat and 40% veg. No rice, no biscuits, no wheat, nothing inflammatory. As for the glucosamine and chandroidine supplements, I make her bone broth. So much better. her treats are chicken hearts or liver bits or chicken feet. Anyways, 6 months later, my baby can run and jump and play again, shes so much healthier off the BS pet foods. I swear they are out to kill off our pets too. If i may just say so, your advice played a huge part in me changing my approach to my dog and it certainly helped her to recover from everything. Bless you friend.
Thank you for sharing your story, especially for providing percentages of meat/veg, I will try it! No more kibble for my girl, and no more chews that claim to be digestible. Who knows what they put in them. ❤
My hat is off to you for loving your baby so much and I am also going to go to 60/40 route. I love my Little Man so much but like I said my hat is off to you for the love you show your pet. Family
Thanks for sharing. Sorry she suffered under the hands of monsters. My Vet is a monster who prescribes deadly pharm drugs, so he can live a lavish life. He asked me to find another Vet. ; I told him, there are no Vets who give a rats a - - about my our dogs health. I'm appauled by all the Vets around the country. They had the audacity to tell me, I was killing my 15 yr old dog with her raw, fresh local raised meats, veggies & herbs. My Lucille Ball lived to be 21+ yrs old. Shame on them all
From where I'm sitting, I have a Rottweiler, he is 156 pounds, and 5 years old, has eaten only raw meat and bones since he was 8 weeks old, his teeth are pearly white, and he is in overall excellent condition, he gets plenty of exercise, I take him to the Vet every 6 months for a check up, he gets an A+ from the Vet, raw is the way to go, My Two Cents!
Some is genetics, too, but food is one of the most important things. I stopped doing bones just because my dog cracked a tooth that caused him some pain and had to be removed.
Blessings and great info once again. Yes I hear marrow bones are good but I hear there not idk, I’m looking for some bones to help clean my dogo back teeth asap, any suggestions will help from anyone, thank you much and God Bless
@@reynaldomeade4797 I give my rottie raw frozen bones to keep him busy & keep his teeth nice & white. He gets frozen chicken feet ( glucosamine & chondroitin for healthy joints) 3-4 a day. Frozen chicken feet are great back teeth cleaners & a great source of collagen for dog joints. You can find em real cheap at Walmart, by the chicken. Meaty neck bones with meat & gristle on them, are great sources of calcium & glucosamine. Raw meat has an enzyme that will break down the biofilm that causes plaque & chewing on the bone will clean the teeth. If your dog is an aggressive chewer, choose bigger raw bones. Lamb or oxtail bones are good choices, too, especially if you have a medium sized dog. You can find them at a butcher shop or the meat aisle in a grocery store, or ask if you don't see any out. If you feed your dog marrow bones, know that the marrow is rich & will give your dog runny poop. Whatever bones you choose, make sure to supervise your dog, incase any pieces break off into smaller pieces.
@@avg5658 Blessings and ok and my doggo is allergic to chicken but I give her turkey one is and hold it for until it’s get small and then let her finish it. I been seeing lamb bones but not sure which lamb bone is safe and good for her. No marrow bones but will definitely check the butcher thank you much
My toothless and blind 12year old rescue pup, never turns his nose up at fresh salmon and veggies. He's very energetic and healthy with a shiny coat. No kibble for this boy!
My bully boy just can’t tolerate commercial dog food. He gets yeasty, ear infections, scratching and it’s horrible. So I started cooking his food and he’s has none of the above symptoms! He also gets some raw food now. Thanks so much Doc for all you do❤
Yes same here! Ones we start to feed our boy some home cooked food he was completely cleared from allergies, or infections! We giving him organic meet, and organic vegetables etc…
Same with my EBT, she suffers when she eats kibble "food," and most are allergic to poultry and whats in most kibble brand food even if chicken isnt listed on the front of the bag as the flavor so you think your buying beef type food then you look in the ingredients 9× out of ten you will see chicken in the list, its so processed its technically not food, just like Mcdonalds for us mcdonalds etc... shouldnt considered food, but for them Mcdonalds would be a healthier option for them then kibble crap its not good for any dog or cat,
@@beyourownmuse8297 My dog is allergic to chicken, too. He kept getting yeast ear infections until I switched him to raw beef- organs, muscle & bone. We had nicknamed him C-note bc every trip to the vet was at least $100! He also gets a rotation of broccoli, pumpkin or cut up green beans for other vitamins & fiber (other veggies were too starchy, broke down into sugar, which feeds yeast).Through trial & error we've finally found the right fit & he hasn't had a yeast infection in almost 2 1/2 years. Only goes to the doc for his yearly checkup & mandated rabies vax.
I decided to stop giving dry Kibble to my fur baby and started buying The Farmers Dog Food which is human grade food…. I wanted to cut expenses and after five months or so found out they have a “DIY” program whereby you buy their Nutrient Mix Supplement and they give you many recipes to follow…….it was so helpful and easy to prepare, I can’t rave enough about it!!!!!! It’s costing me half of what I was paying every month and I’m willing to take the time to make a batch which at 304 calories/day lasts 8-days….so if I make 4 batches and freeze, I have enough for the whole month….I just got done making the Chicken and Broccoli and the Turkey and Vegetable Recipe…I’ll do the beef one next….then maybe another Turkey……..she’s 20lbs and a Chi/Pin….I feed her twice a day…..she absolutely loves it!!!!! I just want to keep her as healthy as possible…I too was giving her Acana which is a better grade of kibble but is still highly processed and has an extremely long shelf life……that’s my story…God bless everyone 🥰 and ty Dr for all your natural remedies……I made your shampoo with the Green Tea and Castile Soap and Lavender Oil…..
Another good one... You are a breath of fresh air, Dr. Jones. I just watched a video by a vet interviewing a pet food nutritionist who said feeding dry was fine and had even been found to be protective against kidney disease. Turns out, the nutritionist works for a multinational.
Follow the money! Hills Science Diet website says that corn meal is good for dogs and cats. I posted that dogs and cats don't need grains and cats can't even process corn. HSD replied, that, when they process the corn into meal, it is healthy. HSD neglected to say that the "processing" destroys all nutritional value. Corn is cheap filler, nothing more.
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy I have never seen a cat, chase down an ear of corn and eat it. Cats need meat protein. If you want to talk dogs, that is different. Millions of people feed their cats Hills Science Diet, and are not going to change because of what I post on a TH-cam video. I will feed, what I feel is best for my cats, and so will they. This channel, and many others, are about raw feeding and holistic veterinary medicine. That's why I am here.
Great video! We feed our sausage dog chicken, sweet potatoes, carrot, green beans sometimes add in heart, kidney, livers then steak mince. He also has eggs occasionally, and oily fish which is relatively cheap. We cook in bulk then use throughout the week, even save our eggshells, grind them down and mix small amount into meals for the calcium. All I can say is we know what he's eating, and there's always a clean bowl afterwards! 🐶
Thanks for this great info! I read somewhere that the longest lived dog ever was an Australian shepherd named Bluey who lived to be 29 with cowboys who tossed him kangaroo meat, raw bones and snakes for food. Fair dinkum.
Makes soooo much sense! Not only that but my dog developed horrible rotten teeth. I couldn't understand why. I never fed her human food and only fed her dry food because that was supposed to remove tartar as she crunched the food. Unfortunately I was too trusting and I never read the ingredients even though I was paying extra for high quality pet food or what I thought was. I finally read the ingredients and there was so much corn and beet and sugary plants that caused decay in her teeth
Shared! LOVE this. When I was a vet tech in my twenties many decades ago I swore that Science Diet was crap and their base diet was formulated to cause all the problems their prescription diets could "fix". I would never feed it or recommend it. We feed lots of raw, turkey necks are a favorite here.
My dog will be 2 in May and some of the things I've been using lately he are almost 25 lb. I throw a bit of kibble in in his bowl as a base then mix it up with whatever is Handy and I think would be good for him or available. After all that I put two tablespoons of goat milk kefir on top of it and call it good until I change my mind. A little ground beef, a mixture of sweet potato and pumpkin, one sardine mashed up in it, a good pinch of chia seeds and some carrots and frozen green beans finally chopped. Did I forget some peanut butter? So go out there and have some fun!
The scare tactic used by most vets is "the brand foods have scientists who research their food for optimum health" ... we know how reliable and honest some of that scientific 'research' actually is, don't we? :(
My family always gave my dog left overs after dinner. Along with some dry food. He never had problems. I thought it was fine bc its usually meat and some veg and never junk food. But one of my friends said it was bad bc they can get sick.
@@loveu8910 I’m not trying to be rude but you’ve had all this experience with your family dog eating homemade food and never having any issues and you know that history tells you dogs do better on human like food in the sense that it’s not dehydrated dry kibble but just because one of your friends says some thing and makes you rethink I hope that they just need you made me do a little more research just probably while you’re watching videos. But I can only say I feed on my nine animals homemade food with the right vitamins minerals proteins carbs and they’re great
After one of my dogs stopped eating kibble completely, got dangerously thin, my BRAT canine version diet failed to get her to eat, I threw down a piece of raw chicken out of frustration, about 4 years ago. She gobbled it up quicker than I saw her eat in a long time... thus started me on the research of raw feeding. Now they all eat raw, and I spend less doing so. The hard part is finding organ meat, finally found a butcher that keeps organs ground up in stock/ he also feeds to his dogs....
When I first made the transition to raw for my wolfdog chicken was the magic ticket. Her whole system was in such chaos that transitioning was causing even more upset. Until we went with just chicken. Everything calmed down and we were able to begin introducing variety after a while!
I like your approach to empowering people to make their pet’s food at home. I’ve been raw feeding for 4 years and have spent hours and hours researching balancing. But I’ve always been suspicious that feeding real food - even if it’s not perfectly balanced - is a lot better than kibble. Just common sense would tell you feeding real food is better than feeding dry balls if hard baked waste products. I like that you give people permission to make simple and easy meals for their pets the same way we do for ourselves and our human children.
My pom that was fed kibble all his life had dental issues, My lab has been 100% raw-fed since he was 10 months old and is in great health. My next doggo will be raw-fed from day 1 of getting them. we had a 2 week period during the pandemic where it was hard to find food for him but premade raw came thru for us.
I own a female dog, had her for fourteen years, she came into my life when she was 1 year old. What does she eat? human food, the same food I eat, she doesn't eat my leftovers, she eats red meat, no chicken, no pork. White rice and vegetables and a lot of water. She has my same diet! How does she look? Like a two years old dog, she rans, walks and jumps like a puppy! When was the last time I took her to the vet? Don't recalled! The same as me! Am close to 70 years old and just like my dog, I feel young, strong and full of life! How often I go for a walk with her? Just six times a day. Now, judge for yourselves if pet food is good for pets.did we give pets doog food forty years ago? Nooooo!
My golden retriever is 8 months old. I'm considering transitioning her to homecooked wholesome meals. Did you feed your dog human food since she was a puppy?
@@stephaniechristine3826 yes I did. Allow me to give you a hint. No salt, no sugar, no chocolate. Once a week one small piece of garlic. You can give carrots, potatos every now and then. Two spoons of quaker oats cooked in water twice a week, they love quaker oats.
Thank you for confirming what I've been feeding my dogs, a little bit of kibble mixed with cooked meat and veggies, along with some raw meat and bones. I also add grounded egg shells, coconut oil, tumeric with pepper and ground flax seed to their cooked food. I'm going to stop feeding them kibble after they finish the current bag. I don't believe processed food is good for their diet at all, with the exception of dog treats occasionally.
Thank you HUGELY for all your knowledge, I've been feeding my doodle homemade food since she was a year old. I left her on puppy kibble til then but switched her to homemade after that. She's doing great on it and loves it. Her first year on puppy kibble she constantly had ear infections and was sick, once I switched her she's not had issues anymore at all. My vet always tells me that that's not good for her but I know better for my fur baby.
You are so genuine I can tall you genuinely care about animals I have a lab called ruby and been watching your vids too keep her healthy thanks for every thing you do
I've got a crock pot of dog food going right now! I cook the chicken carrots, broccoli til al dente'. When cooking is complete I add raw liver and raw beef. Mmmm Dr Jones, Rocco the schnauzer and Ali Bama the Maltese, told me you are their hero for all the help you have given them. From the bottom of my heart...THANK YOU❤️❤️❤️.
I think I'll supplement my next dogs food (origen & freeze dried Stella & chewy's raw) with what I eat, eggs, beef, chicken, sardines, various vegetables & canine safe fruits. I really want my next dog to be as healthy as I can manage. Thank you for for dedication to educating us to keep our pets healthy at home where possible. You are greatly appreciated, doctor 💙
Are you going to use canned sardines or fresh from the seafood market or frozen ones found in the seafood department in many grocery stores. Thank you so much. Hope you can respond. I'm thinking too much sodium would be in the canned version.
@@donnafernandez3712 you're absolutely right. I was planning on giving a portion, but maybe dried fish might be a healthier choice for a dog precisely because of the sodium. Thank you. I won't have a dog for a year or so to come, but you've brought up a great, potentially live saving point. I wasn't thinking clearly. Thank you for pointing that out.
Thanks for this reminder, we get so used to feeding same old stuff. My bichon Pollys birthday today, so good day to start!! Btw you're still brilliant!!!
Thank you Dr. Jones! I have had this question on my brain for awhile! I have a beautiful and sweet Old Time Scotch Collie, Australian Shepherd and precious lap pup - I now feel more confident about the direction I want to take their diet. 🌻
My get some not nice comments but our story. Male cat, almost completely blocked. I am truly grateful to a vet clinic I trust with my fur babies welfare. He was a holy terror, yet they gave him the care needed. I saw his distress when I was finally able to pick him up. Not due to the care they were giving, he was just an angry kitty. They did not up sell me on anything, never have. In fact, after four nights stay, medication and procedures, plus that new prescription diet, bill was only $350. That includes new feed for all four of my babies.I do love your channel! Yet I have found a clinic and group of doctors who honestly care. From a small midwestern town, they could price gauge if they wanted to, they never have. Yes, giving that "awful" dry prescription kibble (watered down) plus the prescription wet food. There are good, decent vets out there, grateful for the ones who always come through for my fur kids.
That is wonderful that you and your cat were / are treated with care and compassion and consideration for your finances. This is how it should always be. My vet is kind and good too but also promotes the prescription diet steroids and antibiotics. I am trying to temper the prescription kibble with the better kibble plus wet food made by me and purchased. I am very fortunate my cats have always been good water drinkers. I filter their water and have ceramic or stainless bowls no plastic for them for food or water and I wash bowls and change the water daily. I also keep the water bowl away from food bowl and they drink more that way. I hope this info helps anyone with cats as well as yourself just in case. All the best for your buddy’s recovery- am dealing with urinary issues with 2 of my senior buddies.
I feed my pup party raw, a home-cooked food with organic veggies and meats. I also use a human grade dehydrated food. I do use kibble, as treats and when traveling. I use a couple of very high quality kibble. But the bulk of my pups diet is raw, ground beef, heart, liver, unwashed green tripe, and bone. I also add chicken paw, sardines, and eggs. I also add different animal protein such as pork, chicken, duck, turkey, lamb, bison, deer and fish. I make a batch of bone broth every month, freeze in ice cube trays and add that along with goals milk. My pups Vet isn't convinced of the raw diet. But I think she is seeing the light! The Vet always comments on how beautiful my pups coat is and how great her teeth look with no bad breath. The Vet always tells me how great my pups health is. Maybe, she will come around on the raw diet someday!
@philip westerfield, blessings and hello great information niceee, if you do not mind me asking where do u get the unwashed green tripe, been trying to some green tripe, I used raw paws lamb green tripe in the bag sometimes, let me know please thank you much and God Bless
@Reynaldo Meade Raw Paws is one, but I mostly use a premade ground beef mixture from Midwest Legacy Beef. Their BLT+bone. It has 1-3% heart, 10% unwashed fatty tripe, 3% liver, 6% ground bone, 78-80% beef. I also add things. B.J.'s Raw has it a a stand alone, but I have not ordered in some time. I hope that this helps.
Thank you for this information! It’s helpful. I’m trying to switch my 4 month old labrador to raw foood too. How old was your pup at the time? I’m afraid of not giving my dog the vitamins she needs (I’ve been scared into thinking food only doesn’t provide all the nutrition a puppy needs)
@Dwl7842 I started with high-quality puppy kibble, The Honest Kitchen dehydrated food, and a little raw in the beginning, then slowly reduced the kibble and The Honest Kitchen dehydrated. My pups still get some kibble, mostly as treats, but also when traveling. And The Honest Kitchen dehydrated is used as a base with the raw and home-cooked diet. Hope this helps.
For their first couple of months, my dogs had Kibble (Eukanuba). I started doing reading, just in general, and I soon realized that our first dog maybe would have lived longer and in less pain had we not fed her kibble. I got rid of the kibble, and my dogs (one 9 and the other 3) are a bundle of energy and health. I cook all of their meals, varying them a lot. I also give them sardines, and everyone once in a while a raw chicken foot. I make games throwing them blueberries to chase down. I also put in a few beans here and there. The 9 year old LOVES cauliflower, so that is a daily treat for her, while the other loves apple. I make broth out of chicken feet and use that to make brown basmati rice and other things for them. I always put a small amount of some green- parsley, rainbow chard, other times kale. I then sprinkle a bit of kelp, and I use ancestral supplements Living Bone which I like because it has a natural ratio of calcium and phosphorus.
I feel for you DOC. My baby died last week from the same thing. And also only 3 weeks after I found out. I have now totally changed my other dogs diet. And that has been for the better already as he was having yeast problems which seem to be going away. I will not feed that crap to any dog I have anymore. But that's just me
I have almost the same recipe. I start with a ground beef base then add: lentils, green powder, pumpkin, ground flax or chia seeds, psyllium powder dusting as a binder, and sunflower seeds. The ground beef is microwaved with the other ingredients into a meat sauce texture. I also include a mixture of uncooked carrots, tomato, broccoli, and strawberries blended to a sauce with bone broth. I change the ingredients occasionally. When I feed them I add a bit of V-dog or Wild Earth vegan kibble and mix it all together. The kibble provides a healthy crunch they like and may catch some nutrients I may have missed. Most of my dogs have lived to 18 years. They pass from old age. They get a noon meal and a couple of treats in the evening for teeth cleaning. I have never and would never feed them the poison in the store dog food aisle. The "meat" in these commercial foods are denatured and / or rancid from processing to "sanitize" for consumption. Even the ones from the store cooler. It's what you start with that matters. If the ingredients list has more than two or three items, walk away. Ask yourself. How can a unrefrigerated bag of dog food sit on a warm store shelf for six months and claim the number one ingredient is meat? Think preservatives.
Thank you, your videos are a breath of fresh air! I feed prepackaged raw (Big Country Raw brand) as well as a small amount of homemade for variety. My cats get a tiny bit of kibble every evening because they absolutely love it, and I don't have the heart to completely take it away from them. I use kibble as treats for training my puppy too.
thank you so much for the video...i feed my dog homemade food all the time and i don't know what to do when everyone tells me the opposite, it's really tiring. she is 5 now and i hope she will have a long and happy life.
I agree. It is confusing and frustrating. The only thing I don't agree with on this video are the peas, and especially the sunflower oil. Seed Oils are some of the worst things to ingest. We do coconut oil. My dog LOVES coconut oil.
I have two large dogs. I feed them a diet of chicken, brown rice and carrots . I must say I have reduced the brown rice and carrots after looking at their stool and the licking on their skin. My mixer has been 1 cup chicken, 1/2 cup of brown rice and carrots. I do supplement with Instinct dog kibbles . I must supplement because Id be cooking constant, lol.
I hear you about cooking constantly! I have 4 dogs, 2 of which are lab-cross 4- month old puppies, their 1-1/2 year old mom, and an ancient beagle who decided on his own to move in with me. I fixed a great big stock pot of ground turkey, brown rice and mixed canned vegetables because that’s what I had on hand and a $48 bag of dog food lasted about a week with this crew. I’m going to adjust my recipe next time, but even this huge batch is going to last less than a week. Maybe I’ll go back to the bagged raw chicken with cooked veggies.
Well I have a dog that is very sensitive and doesn't like much. I gave kibble that he got tired of quickly and some kibble he couldn't stand. he is also not good in his coat. wet food gave him a rumbling tummy. He really liked homemade dog food, but he couldn't really handle it either. now I give him RAW food and now it goes much better, no more rumbling tummy, and he likes it! Thanks Doctor you are the best!
My bloodhound baby eats homemade food ,pork, chicken, salmon, tuna, eggs, veggies and fruits, oooo and cheese, even some vanilla ice cream once in awhile. Loves her popcorn with some olive oil drizzled on it. No commercial food here. Hope it helps her live a long and good life.
I have learned so much from your channel Dr. Jones ..thank you so much for all your information .. you truly are a blessing to us all 😊❤ like me and I’m sure many others you are the number one go to for helping our animals live a long and healthy life ..🥰
I have been feeding Orijen for many years. I feel it is the best kibble out there. Sadly Champion Pet Foods, the maker of Orijen and also Acana has been bought out by Mars. I hear it was part of the purchase agreement that Mars could not change the recipe for a year but im not sure when that clock started ticking. I am heartbroken that a dog food company that i had full trust in will now be trashed by a company of bean counters.
Also want to add, that within a few days of my dogs being on your canine advance supplement, there 💩 looked soooo much better. I'm on my 3rd order of it and have never seen them so healthy. Thank you sooooo much for all you do and the amazing information you give us. I trust u, and I don't trust most with my dogs. So, thanks for being in this practice for all the right reasons.
My dog likes a little kibble (expensive, cold-pressed stuff made from muscle meat) and it’s topped with lightly cooked turkey mince, beef mince, braised chicken thighs (without the skin and the bone), liver, lambs heart, sardines and fresh salmon. Mashed pumpkin, sweet potato, a little grated carrot, mashed peas or green beans, stewed apple, even some mashed banana. He also loves bone broth, which sets in the fridge and gets spooned over everything as a lovely moist jelly
Blessings and OMG 😱 you really taking care of your dog, I need some of that turkey mince lamb and etc for me without kibble, lol 😆 where did u get the lamb heart God Bles
I have two kittens, now 10 months old. I have been moving them from kibble to wet food, mixed with raw. They just stopped eating the wet food. Now I give them raw ground beef, and boiled chicken. I have a supplement powder with vitamins, minerals and taurine. I mix the powder in beef bone broth. A few times a week, I add beef or chicken liver and some broccoli. With cats, it's what they want to do. And they don't watch TH-cam videos! : )
@@blkbrn1952 Dr Jones mentions that in his YT video about home made cat food. I believe 1000 mg per lb of cooked ground turkey. I have an 8 month old cat and am transitioning him to the home made. He recently got very sick after eating commercial wet food (beef) that our recently adopted cat eats and was recommended by the shelter. I dont think it was the food so much as a sudden change from chicken to beef. He got into the other cats dish after seeing he was eating something different. My young one has had an issue before with switching foods too soon then he wouldn’t eat for days. The first time was a month ago and $615 later the vet could do nothing for him but another blood test, xrays, antibiotics, tranquilizer and fluids. He just had blood work done when down for Being neutered and everything was normal 😬. I had given him organ meats just as a treat the night before he stopped eating. So this time I took matters into my own hands after he stopped eating and am feeding him home made chicken, home made chicken bone broth (magic for sick pets and great for the gut) adding in probiotics, digestive enzymes, coloidal silver, L-lysine and giving him a vitamin supplement. He was a 10 week old stray when we found him so he may have some issues stemming from that. Took 4 days of nursing him back to health but without drugs and he looks and acts great now. Some pets are extremely sensitive to switching foods especially young ones.
@@blkbrn1952 The amount of taurine is based on the cat's weight. A rule of thumb is, 10 mg of taurine, per kg of weight per day. All cats are different, here is my situation: My two kittens weigh about 7 pounds, or 3.2 kg. They should get 32mg of taurine a day. The supplement contains 125mg per day. There is also taurine in the ground beef. I feed chicken thigh meat, which has more taurine than light meat. I have not found any problems with giving them lots of taurine.

@@edschulhof6303 thanks, I did some research and apparently it is water soluble so if you give a little too much it is okay. I just didn't want to harm my cats.
Take rice + veggies ( carrot, cabbage, pumpkin, green gourd, cucumber, few slices of potato, green peas fresh one, can add few spinach leaves, french bean) any one vegetable singly or in combination as per availability + pulses ( I add yellow lentil here in India known as moong dal) + any fish with out bone or chicken meat or egg. Take all and wash properly. Add all in a bowl and boil with potable water. When the ingredients are all well boiled as nd cooked cool it. Give to your pet. NB: Can add chicken liver. You can also add a pinch of clarified butter. Love from India.
(HUG) I love this video, still trying to encourage myself to find another dog, my best friend who was 7 1/2 ate kibble all his life, do not want it to happen to another dog. Please make we can safely give when we are blessed by God with another dog to love again. I miss him so much! Thank you Dr Jones.
lol Always wondered why there was never Mouse/Rat/Finch cat foods or Chipmunk/Rabbit/Weasel dog foods. I add in chicken hearts, chick or beef liver, & egg to homemades...Kale, rice, bone broth smoothies as "gravy". Yep, sometimes it's a "Not today" day, and kibbles come in handy. (Funny how they prefer the 'not so good for you' ones to the actually nutritious ones...kinda like Us, yes?) :) Thank you, Doc, for all you share...You're the best!
Honest Kitchen mixed with cooked ground turkey, 1 hard boiled egg, mix. Then treat is baked salmon, broccoli and carrots, only organic and washed ! 🦊🤗🤗🐕 Cooking doesn't have to be expensive.
I love your videos. I also feed my dog about 1/4 - 1/3 kibble, but she gets ground meats, green veggies, pumpkins, occasional olive oil supplement, eggs, oatmeal, calcium supplement from eggshells you had a video on. She is strong, has clear eyes, shiny coat and is happy and calm 😊
I started feeding my chocolate lab a sardine and a teaspoon of sunflower seed oil with her kibble. She had bare patches and itching for years before this, and this simple addition to her diet has made such a positive difference. Much less itching and paw biting, and her coat is on its way to being thick and shiny -- in only a few weeks. I think eventually I'll have her off the apoquel. Thank you so much for your advice.
You said "eventually off Apoquel" if you only knew the damage to the immune system that has more than likely already happened, you wouldn't give him any more. You are in for a future of torment for your dog. My dog will never be normal. Apoquel is to blame. Please consider sooner than later and get to the "REASON" your dog is having allergic reactions. My dog ended up with IMT. Apoquel is an immune suppressant and will eventually destroy any chance animals have to heal naturally. I learned all of this the hard way. I'm so sorry to sound like a crazy person. I feel totally responsible for my dog being so ill. I had no idea about this medication. She took it for 3 years. Good luck with your pooch❤
Bingo baby! I have done a good amount of research and the best advice I got was from two book "give your dog a bone" by Dr. Ian Billinghurst and "Dogs,Dog Food and Dogma" By Daniel Schulof. Both are fantastic and written in 2016 and 1993. They are still applicable today. They both agree a lot and know variety in raw meats is key. They all agree bones (uncooked) are the keys. I can see the direction the big dog food guys will dip in as the market for prepared raw seems to be around a hundred dollars a pound. Not sure who in their right mind would pay that but it's out there. You could literally by a dog Wego beef every day and spend less. Add some supplements and Wego liver with some quality eggs. Get that for half the price they sell it for. By the way still got the same potential problems you spoke of in your great video.
Thank you!! For helping us sort through all these issues and provide better care for our furry family. We love our dogs and cat as much as our human family they are with us constantly and depend on us, I feel better knowing how to make better choices!! 🐾🐾✨❤️✨❤️✨
What a wonderful outcome. Thank you for giving so much detail. I use to kibble as extra food not the main food. Im going to stop feeding my darling dog processed foods. If processed for is bad for humans, it's got to be bad for every other species. Thank you
since i stop giving my dogs kibbles their hair is better, my dog Chloe does not suffer from allergies anymore and Lola is almost -joint pain free...I make the food for them..sardines, wild salmon, vegetables, beans and rice...they love their food...so the big giant food co lost one client...and I also give them the juice of the meat that i cooked for them...
My cat supplements her dry food with locally sourced, semi organic rat meat 😅 it's the most local, low environmental impact meat she can get (she doesn't go after birds, and rats are invasive in most areas including mine).
Thanks ' very helpful information. I've been feeding my 3yr old girl (rottweiler)retriever bites and bones and it always gives her indigestion. But lately I've been incorporating sweet potatoes and blueberries. Working towards the raw products
I’ve bought for my cats the “better” and more expensive kibbles to supplement canned food and I’m on my second brand of the better kibble that they won’t eat!! That’s two explanation points for two brands!
Thanks a lot for this video. Being very confused as to what to feed, I’ve decided on a cooked meal every evening-starting with your recipe, cooked ahead of time. That’s very doable. I can’t bring myself to feed raw yet, though. (Didn’t dogs die younger when they lived in the wild-though it may not have been the food.)
I get Purina One Sensitive Systems for my cat and it doesn't have the lining thankfully. I have heard this about the lining before. It has helped his skin dandruff and him itching down a lot and he doesn't throw up hairballs as much as he was before I switched his food which was the expensive kibble from Halo. He gets wet food everyday too. The stuff in some pet food makes me wonder how do they get away with it.
I'm confused about the raw chicken thing. Aren't we constantly cautioned about eating raw chicken and making sure we wipe down and sanitize cutting boards and utensils that came in contact with raw meat? Why is it then OK to feed dogs and cats raw grocery store meat, but more specifically chicken? This is a serious question. When I make chicken for myself, I cook a piece separately for my cat and he loves it. But I never thought it would be safe to give him a piece that was raw.
I have the same question. Until I get an answer, I'm going with the idea that dogs' and cats' digestive systems are better able to handle stuff we cannot. Also, there's a difference between feeding a solid piece of meat as opposed to ground. Ground meat is a lot more dangerous than whole meat unless you grind it yourself.
Oh gosh 🤦♀️ Because humans can't eat raw meat... But animals can.. What do carnivores eat in nature? Raw meat.. You don't ever see a lion cooking his antelope over a fire do you? 👀 Or a cat cooking his rat? You get what I'm sayin?
Dogs have shorter digestive tracts designed for fast digestion of raw meats and bone. Their guts are very resistant to things that make humans sick like salmonella because of this. They have more hydrochloric acid in their guts for fast absorption. They digest food much quicker and therefore the food does not have time to sit around and ferment in their guts. Hope this helps 🙂
@FairyMoon Tarot It's not because the poultry is raw that makes it dangerous... It's the way it's processed. It's processed in such a way that if one bird has a dangerous pathogen, it passes it on to ALL the birds being processed. It's because of the methods the poultry processors use. Beef, lamb, pork, etc., are not processed the same way. Thus, the concern about feeding anyone raw poultry.
B4 we domesticated these animals, alls they did was hunt 4 their food, which meant eating whatever they caught as it came... it also meant they didn't eat daily & they were healthier 4 it. I've started feeding our dogs just once daily, at different times, & their behavior, energy, appetite, etc is better. It's referred to as intermittent fasting for dogs, & is based on the history of their eating habits (basically)... They are finally slimming down eating a full amount of daily recommended food all at once, where the diets, restricted food, etc didn't work at twice at scheduled times, so I think for our (large & giant breed dogs) pets this is working great. Just saying...
Dr Jones, You are right!! I totally agree with you. All the risks in pet food, whether it be canned or kibble, is not going to make your dog live to be 20, and maybe not even 10. And I know that 20 is very old for any dog, and maybe your dog could live closer to the age of 20, if they were eating very healthy and fresh "people" food, I guess for lack of a better term. Also, they probably would have less health problems and be at the Vet less frequently, if their diet is brought up to a higher standard. Not eating the dregs of the factory farming left overs that go into a lot of dog food, no matter how expensive. My dogs always eat the more expensive dog foods but still! there are toxins to avoid in those foods as well. My Vet always says just what you have divulged in this video....she's not always that supportive about making homemade dog food, saying it's key to have all the vitamins and minerals that are put into kibble and wet food, but I know that you are absolutely right, try to feed your dog fresh food a couple times a week, mixed in with kibble...it does take time to get that fresh food and prepare, but you are doing the absolute best thing for your dog's future health and longevity. I like your videos very much! I love your natural approach to pet care whenever we can do it....THANK YOU 💟☮☯🕉
I have given my dog ever since she was 12 weeks old, home cooked meals. Either, beef, pork, lamb, chicken or venison mixed with lentils, kidney beans, chick peas, oatmeal, kale, brocali, cauliflower. Sometimes I give her an egg mixed in or a tin of sardines. I make 3 weeks worth of dinners and freeze them into portions for each day. I have her nearly 2 years now and she is very healthy. It's actually no big fuss to make. It takes a half hour to do it. It's cheaper than a medium quality kibble and I get a lot of satisfaction knowing she is getting the best food I can give her. She is a cockapoo. I'm keen to see if she lives longer than the average cockapoo.
my cats get raw chicken, sometimes cooked. boiled fish mixed with canned food.minced beef with egg yolk and coconut oil once a week. the dogs of my burmese gardener were fed with rice and canned fish for 8 years. now they get meat, bones, a little rice with coconut oil, egg yolks and meat under my control. since then they have no more fleas and ticks and a shiny coat
Is your Ultimate Canine Advanced Supplement good for senior dogs (I have a pug!) with kidney/liver issues? Thank you for always sharing such helpful information!
Hi, yes it is and you can check other details of our product on this link: drjonesnaturalpet.com/supplements/for-dogs/ultimate-canine-advanced-health-formula.html
Thanks to Dr Jones I homecook my 2 dog’s dinner. My boy is 14 this month and both are doing very well and love the food. Kibble is for very lazy pet parents. And dodgy food.
A feed my dog cooked ground turkey with carrots and or sweet potatoes as a topper over her kibble. I want to transition to NO kibble at all. I think it’s causing dark tear stains on her beard. I also switched her to filtered water only.
This makes sense a food that’s balanced. I never understood why a dog should be forced to eat the same thing say after day. Humans don’t why should they? I’m so glad to have these videos to watch and confirm how important it is to feed a Furbaby moderation with kibble, raw, and other healthy foods for them
Sunflower oil terrible. Instead, look at post below for healthy alternatives. Peas not necessary and can cause problems. Otherwise, great info as usual.
Could you do a review on the honest kitchen dog food clusters. Is it good, does it have enough protein for adult dogs,is it a good dog food brand etc... thanks
I do not eat anything with natural flavoring in the ingedients, there for i dont want to feed my pets anything with natural flavoring as well. What i did was look at the ingreedients and reserch what the ingreediens are and the side affects of the ingeedients that cause serious health problems. I like to hear the good advice on how to eat and home remedies that you give as a Doctor with the natural foods and herbs. Thanks for so much good advice
Yes, I wonder how our companion animals successfully evolved alongside us before advent of pet food industry concocting the “best pet diet” in a bag?? Dubious of claims my dogs will die from just a bit of onion. When I go to veterinarian clinic display stacks of “prescription” food, it’s apparent they have vested interest, are complicit in furthering industry profits alongside there own. Much of my distrust came about after losing my little Jack Russell to renal failure 2007 from Chinese import ingredients. Thank you Dr Jones for showing how simple it is to feed our dogs healthy and safely!
Do you have any advice for feeding a dog with a liver shunt. My dog is on lactulose and on Purina pro plan HA. He hates this food and he is just so weak all the time. They push this expensive food hard! Your videos are always so helpful.😊
I adopted a very little male cat with a bad mouth. He was brought to the shelter as a stray. I have tried to get him to eat EVERYTHING from raw to kibble. The ONLY thing he will eat is Purina Cat Chow. My Vet said to feed him whatever he will eat as long as he eats.
Try putting another dish right next to his dish, with the new food you want him to eat. Just have it there and let him associate it with the one he likes. You could sprinkle the new food with powdered liver to make the transition faster.
Switched my 8 year old husky over to fresh food from the brand Ollie.. shes been on it 2 years now. she is happier, healthier, the perfect weight, teeth are clean, nails grow fast. She use to scratch her snout to the point where she would lose fur and bleed. Vets said it was allergies but she hasnt scratched since the food switch. If you make your own fresh food and prepare it, you could lack nutrients, so its better to leave it up to the experts. The food is edible for people, ive tasted it many times.. also have a friend whos dog suffered 3-4 seizures a week, they tried everything, vets said it wasnt curable.. now hes on Ollie and hasnt had a seizure in 2 years. I think any of the fresh food brands should be good
Ollie is very expensive , but I know you can buy half fresh and half their kibble I think I’m going that rout for my new pup when I get her the cat don’t know still what to do
You gave measurements for the turkey, sweet potato pea mix but is that one daily serving? My last 3 dogs have either died from or have cancer presently. This made me dive into researching why, and hence finding your channel. I'm curious what the recipe amount per day be for a 25lb Boston and 93lb boxer? I have always included a veggie or sweet potato into their dry kibble so I know they'd love this recipe.

You are such a GREAT doggie parent!!! :)
Shame on them all
❤
And I also sincerely convey my gratitude to Veterinary secrets for actually telling the truth and educating pet owners. Respect for you Doctor
I stopped doing bones just because my dog cracked a tooth that caused him some pain and had to be removed.
started feeding marrow bones which have been great for my dogs teeth. Haven't started her on raw meat yet.
Thanks so much Doc for all you do❤
My dog also had that problem until I started making his food
Yes same here! Ones we start to feed our boy some home cooked food he was completely cleared from allergies, or infections! We giving him organic meet, and organic vegetables etc…
@@wonderfulworld5015 y
Yes that's it. Don't forget to add health fruit also. Blueberries are great
Same with my EBT, she suffers when she eats kibble "food," and most are allergic to poultry and whats in most kibble brand food even if chicken isnt listed on the front of the bag as the flavor so you think your buying beef type food then you look in the ingredients 9× out of ten you will see chicken in the list, its so processed its technically not food, just like Mcdonalds for us mcdonalds etc... shouldnt considered food, but for them Mcdonalds would be a healthier option for them then kibble crap its not good for any dog or cat,
@@beyourownmuse8297 My dog is allergic to chicken, too.
We’re going to be trying. Trial chicken run.
@@edschulhof6303
That's right!
It's all about the Benjamin's 💲💲💲💲
Vets are getting kick-backs for pushing toxic foods
Shame on them!
@@edschulhof6303 Prob GMO Corn, too..
Tula is such a great co-host/assistant! What a precious girl 😍
Why do vets push it so hard science diet, Royal canin and Purina? My dog is so sick now and the food is expensive. Is it a money grab?
Exactly!
It's heart breaking. I'm so thankful for this channel and my chinese medicine vet
Ye$, we definitely do!! $$$

Before dog food existed we gave dogs the same foods that we eat. All went well❤️
My family always gave my dog left overs after dinner.
TRUTH
You dont know
After one of my dogs stopped eating kibble completely, got dangerously thin, my BRAT canine version diet failed to get her to eat, I threw down a piece of raw chicken out of frustration, about 4 years ago.
@@echothegoodwolf it's amazing to see the transition! Then you feel like an a$$, because we waited so long...
Wow! Thanks for sharing!
It is so confusing. Thank you for this video. I’ve been feeding one without the preservatives you mentioned and no byproducts, or grains.

Dr Jones, Rocco the schnauzer and Ali Bama the Maltese, told me you are their hero for all the help you have given them.
From the bottom of my heart...THANK YOU❤️❤️❤️.
Thank you doc! Thank you for speaking the truth. We are grateful!!
@@donnafernandez3712 you can used canned sardines with no added salt and packed in springwater. Not much sodium.

We all needed this video so badly. I feed my dog the same way.
@Reynaldo Meade
Raw Paws is one, but I mostly use a premade ground beef mixture from Midwest Legacy Beef. Their BLT+bone. It has 1-3% heart, 10% unwashed fatty tripe, 3% liver, 6% ground bone, 78-80% beef. I also add things. B.J.'s Raw has it a a stand alone, but I have not ordered in some time.
I hope that this helps.
@@pw6896 Blessings and thank you much yes it does help, will check it out cause my dogo is allergic and funny tummy with beef
@Dwl7842
I started with high-quality puppy kibble, The Honest Kitchen dehydrated food, and a little raw in the beginning, then slowly reduced the kibble and The Honest Kitchen dehydrated.
I wish there were more vets out there like you. I feel so unsupported. Thank you for doing what you do!
I feel for you DOC. My baby died last week from the same thing. And also only 3 weeks after I found out. I have now totally changed my other dogs diet. And that has been for the better already as he was having yeast problems which seem to be going away. I will not feed that crap to any dog I have anymore. But that's just me
I'm so sorry for the heartbreaking loss of your fur baby😔🙏🌈
@@avg5658 Thank you. I miss him so much.
Do you have a general cat food recipe too?
Yes, He has a video on YT for it. Its easy.
thank you so much for the video...i feed my dog homemade food all the time and i don't know what to do when everyone tells me the opposite, it's really tiring. she is 5 now and i hope she will have a long and happy life.
I agree. It is confusing and frustrating. The only thing I don't agree with on this video are the peas, and especially the sunflower oil. Seed Oils are some of the worst things to ingest. We do coconut oil. My dog LOVES coconut oil.
THANK YOU, YOU ARE SO RIGHT.
YES I LOVE MY DOG.
I now have changed their kibble to Orijen grain free beef
Thank you for your transparency and digestible content. God Bless You sir!!!!

Hi Maggie may I ask what kibble do you feed your dog I am looking to do the same as you do with your dogs
Can I ask you how you know how much taurine to give a cat?
@@AcornHillHomesteadthank you for sharing your info. I am guardian to 7 indoor seniors and had a recent vet bill scenario like yours plus two of my guys had a urinary infection- ugh.
Thank you so much! It's time to become aware of what we are feeding our beloved fur friends! ❤

You’re amazing! I’m linking this to my Instagram for my followers to learn. A million thank you’s from Michigan USA!
AT LAST, SOME COMMON SENSE ANSWERS! THANK YOU!
It's insane trying to figure out what to feed our pups everyday there is a different push toward a new thing
Thank you!! For helping us sort through all these issues and provide better care for our furry family. We love our dogs and cat as much as our human family they are with us constantly and depend on us, I feel better knowing how to make better choices!!

Glad to help :)
Thanks so much for this useful and sensible info.
Thankyou again so much.We sure do appreciate you and all you do.God Bless🙏🏼👩🏻🦳
Or a cat cooking his rat?

Yes, I wonder how our companion animals successfully evolved alongside us before advent of pet food industry concocting the “best pet diet” in a bag?? Dubious of claims my dogs will die from just a bit of onion. Try putting another dish right next to his dish, with the new food you want him to eat. Just have it there and let him associate it with the one he likes. You could sprinkle the new food with powdered liver to make the transition faster.
